Abstract:There were abundant excavated documents in the twentieth century, of which engraved stone monuments and epigraph tablets took the first place, and could be trailed or dated back to Tang Dynasty If some scholars could exert their efforts to these, they would definitely get a new vision of Tang Dynasty literary history The main important function of these newly excavated documents consists in: first, they provide a wide range of new materials for those observer and writers; secondly, some lost documents are retrieved; thirdly, they widen our knowledge of the background of Tang literature In a word, they are the inseparable materials in an integral study of Tang literature

Abstract:A Collection of Epitaphs from the Tang West Market Museum was of significant value in literary studies.The deeds of the Tang literary writers which were recorded in their epitaphs provide a more comprehensive understanding of such famous poets as He Zhizhang,Li Bai,Du Fu and Wei Yingwu.The Tang Dynasty was called "an era of poetry",but many poets,together with their poems,remained unknown because they could be made well known only by spreading their manuscripts.These unknown poets found from their newly unearthed epitaphs provide important resources for academic research.Epitaph is a special type of biography,which has continuously evolved in the process of its normalization and development.The contingency and originality of the newly unearthed epitaphs are mostly helpful to the study of the occurrence and evolution of literary styles.On the basis of the newly unearthed epitaphs,the transcription of the works of the Tang literary writers can also exhibit the literary and academic prosperity in the Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:Ever since the beginning of the 20th century,the Japanese Buddhist scholars have carried out thorough examination of the general picture,the translators and the doubtful authenticity of the Chinese version of the Buddhist scriptures,including the Eastern Han's Buddhist scriptures.Erich Zürcher,a famous Dutch sinologist,writes a broad outline of the linguistic characteristics of the Eastern Han's Buddhist trans-lation,gives a clear exposition of the translation terminology and style of the Chinese version of the Buddhist scriptures in the different stages of translation,and provides a list of the translated works of the Eastern Han's Buddhist scriptures based on textual research.

Abstract:Based on the investigation of the original texts of Dunhuang Manuscripts and other relative information,this article tries to re-recording and reviw those writings of Dunhuang Manuscript for correction,the texts here studied was belong to Seikidou Collection which collected by Iichiro Tokutomi and now hold in the Ochanomizu Library in Tokyo,Japan and.By author's description and studies,this article going to reveal these texts' writing form,the content and academic value view from angles of textual research and historical analysis.The study provides some new idea in Dunhuang Studies and new way for the textual research on overseas Dunhuang Manuscripts.

Abstract:Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern,Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties are known as the middle ancient ages in the history of Chinese literature.The newly unearthed documents will contribute to a reexamination of literary background,literary evolution,literary ontology and stylistic form of these dynasties to correct the traditional heavy reliance in literary history on longitudinal combing.First,unearthed documents play an important role for the research on regional literary history to regain the initiative.Second,the research on unearthed documents is helpful to probe into the literary phenomena buried by history.Third,unearthed documents are significant for the research of essay,especially for the further study on stylistic forms dominated by practical writing.Because unearthed documents are excavated in odds and ends by accident,they should be compared with historical recordation in study.A comprehensive perspective of social-cultural science,based on the restoration of unearthed texts,will thus shed light on the natural process of birth and growth of literature.

Abstract:The study of the aborigines in Taiwan began from Qing Dynasty ,and developed into the phase of indagation during the time that Taiwan was occupied by Japan. Then the study of the aborigines leaded by scholars in Taiwan got great development on the indagation of ethnography and the research of social and cultural anthropology. A kind of inaccurate tendency that several scholars unilaterally emphasize the relation between the aborigines in Taiwan and Austronesian family has been appearing in recent years. Basing on the new research of ethnography indagation and by integrated multi-subject research , rebuilding the important item such as the origin, the history, the relationship and the identifying of the nation on the aborigines in Taiwan, is the unshirkable responsibility to the continent scholars in the new century.

Abstract:Over the past decades, the study of Judaism of the Greco-Roman period has been greatly advanced by the collection and publication of several standard editions of Jewish inscriptions. This is not only a harbinger of an increasing chorus of voices maintaining the importance of epigraphic evidence as a window into the otherwise invisible world of the less notable, but also provides a broader perspective on Jewish cultural interaction with the Greco-Roman world. This paper intends to (1) survey the corpora of Jewish inscriptions from Jean-Baptiste Frey to the mammoth project of CII/P under way in Israel, (2) reflect the current methodology for identifying a Jewish inscription in the hope that the potential user can develop a sensitive and cautious approach to this non-literary material, and (3) investigate the general epigraphic characters within the context of the modern debate on the relationship between Judaism and HellenismBook Review

Abstract:The Tang and Song Dynasties marked an important period of the development of Chinese catalogues of Buddhist scriptures,featuring a rich variety of such books.Although many of these catalogues in the said dynasties have been lost,there are still clues that can be found regarding the lost catalogues in the existing documentation.From the bibliographical works of past dynasties and historical stories of Buddhism,our research findings include nineteen kinds of lost Buddhist scripture catalogues,of which fourteen are prepared in the Tang and five in the Song.The research also covers the authorship,time of writing,and the main contents of the catalogues.

Abstract:The Ji gujin fodao lunheng 集古今仏道論衡 compiled by Daoxuan 道宣 in the Tang dynasty is a collection of discussions related to the controversy between Buddhism and Taoism. The compiler quoted numerous ancient books and records, particularly from the Xu Gaoseng zhuan 続高僧伝, and Bianzheng lun 弁正論. In his own Guang Hongmingji 広弘明集 chapters about “Rectification” and “Differentiate,” we find a number of passages cited from the Ji gujin fodao lunheng. These materials have been studied in the context of the acceptance of Buddhism in China and debates between Buddhists and Taoists by scholars such as Yoshitaka Tsukamoto, Yoshitoyo Yoshioka, and Tadashi Kubotoku.In recent years, Liu Linkui published articles on the establishment and philological value of the Ji gujin fodao lunheng. But there still remain many questions to be discussed. While all old Buddhist manuscripts in Japan of the text are three volumes long, all the print edition of the canons printed after the tenth century, including the Taishi, have the text as four volumes. We learn by comparing records in the sūtra catalogues and the content of the text that the Japanese old manuscripts represent the first draft of this text, and therefore offer important material for the study of the text.This article presents an overview of the printed text material of Daoxuan’s Ji gujin fodao lunheng. The ancient Japanese manuscripts are introduced, and the process of text change for both printed and written materials is presented in a comparative manner.

Abstract:Dong Kang is a famous bibliophile and a book engrave master in modern China. This paper introduces Dong Kang's career of collecting books, inscribing books and finding Chinese ancient books through Dong Kang's Journals to East.Dong Kang's contribution of selecting, cataloguing and photoprinting Chinese ancient books which are spread to Japan is emphatically evaluated.It points out that Dong Kang's Journals to East is a valuable material on the study of Sino-Japanese book cultural exchanges in the Republic period.

Abstract:There are four Early Sui Dynasty Buddhist sutra inscriptions written by Song Shao(or Song Shaoyan) in Dunhuang manuscripts,which are respectively collected in China,Japan,and Britain.These inscriptions provide abundant academic information for studying matters such as the Song clan in Dunhuang,the official system,funeral customs of qi-qi-zhai(seven-seven feasts),and the situation of the northwest regions in the Zhou and Sui dynasties.

Abstract:The Buddhist sutras catalogues are the basis for the study of Buddhist history and literature, but most of the early Buddhist catalogues have vanished, and there were also many discrepancies in the records of later generations. Based on previous scholarship, this article offers a detailed study of the eleven sutras catalogues that were lost before the Tang Dynasty. The authenticity, authorship, dates of compilation, contents, and characteristics of these sutras catalogues are examined in order to present an overall picture of pre-Tang Buddhist sutras catalogues.

Abstract:The Scriptures of Taoism from AD 4th to 6th Centuries, categorized to the important Ancient Scriptures of Taoism system, are significant to the study on Taoism history. This paper summarizes literatures of the study on Ancient Scriptures of Taoism from AD 4th to 6th Centuries of the West, Japan and China in recent fifty years, and mainly discusses the approach that such kind of study takes and its instructive significance. Based on these descriptions and analyses, the author comes to a brief conclusion.

Abstract:A number of manuscripts of the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties were discovered in Dunhang and Turpan.Most were Buddhist scriptures while a few were Taoist scriptures,Confucian Classics and Letters.The commemoration inscriptions,attached at the Taoist and Buddhist scriptures with the era and rich historical information,boasted great academic value and reflected that most manuscripts,copied in the south,flowed into Dunhuang and Turpan through the traffic route between the Northwest and the Southeast.These information revealed that religious cultural exchanges and communications between the Northwest and the Southeast regions in the Eastern Jin,Sixteen Kingdoms,and Southern and Northern Dynasties.

Abstract:The collections of Chinese ancient books in Japan are exceedingly rich, many of which have been lost or pretty rare in China. In terms of compilation and research of the Ci poetry on the Ming Dynasty, the ancient books collected by Japan also play an important role. The Ci poetry of Ming Dynasty from the rare Chinese ancient books collected by Japan will be successively collated and published. And this is the first part from the New Engrave of the North Lyrics about Women from Six Homes in the History.

Abstract:The reincarnation system of living Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism, as a special selection and succession mechanism based on the reincarnation theory in Buddhism, has gradually been accepted in the complex religious changes. However, in the early stage of the formation of the inheritance system, the process was not smooth due to the complicated situation. Over the centuries, there have been many victims of this system, and Tsangyang Gyatso, the sixth Dalai Lama, is one of them. Tsangyang Gyatso is known to us as a genius of writing. His poems are romantic, sincere, bold and realistic, and people often focus on the literary value of his poems. However, as Tsangyang Gyatso, whose main identity is the reincarnation of a living Buddha, his works reflect more of his perception of Buddha rather than his feelings. Most of the time, what we needs to understand is the truth in his poems rather than the depth of his love. Since the original text is in Tibetan and mixed with many Buddhist texts, many times people may like the Chinese translation of a certain text rather than the meaning of the original text. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze Tsangyang Gyatso's historical status and the profound meaning of his writings from the perspectives of Buddhist historical background, social structure, religious belief and literary tradition.

Abstract:In this essay, to make the best use of the limited space available, I concentrate on elements that have not yet received much attention in English, particularly the aspects that scholars outside Japan have found bewildering and the ones that I have knowledge of myself. 1 Thus after sketching in a cursory way the earlier stages of Japanese sinology, I focus on the last forty years. I also look primarily at the study of history, largely leaving to the side the study of literature, philosophy, and the social sciences. Readers who want to know more about earlier stages of Japanese Sinology can turn to many informative and insightful works on the subject.
