Abstract:Abstract The application of digital technologies has greatly improved the efficiency of cultural heritage documentation and the diversity of heritage information. Yet the adequate incorporation of cultural, intangible, sensory or experimental elements of local heritage in the process of digital documentation, and the deepening of local community engagement, remain important issues in cultural heritage research. This paper examines the heritage landscape of tunpu people within the context of digital conservation efforts in China and the emergence of emotions studies as an evaluative tool. Using a range of data from the Ming-era village of Baojiatun in Guizhou Province, this paper tests an exploratory emotions-based approach and methodology, revealing shifting interpersonal relationships, experiential and praxiological engagement with the landscape, and emotional registers within tunpu culture and heritage management. The analysis articulates distinctive asset of emotional value at various scales and suggests that such approaches, applied within digital documentation contexts, can help researchers to identify multi-level heritage landscape values and their carriers. This methodology can provide more complete and dynamic inventories to guide digital survey and representation; and the emotions-based approach also supports the integration of disparate heritage aspects in a holistic understanding of the living landscape. Finally, the incorporation of community participation in the process of digital survey breaks down boundaries between experts and communities and leads to more culturally appropriate heritage records and representations.

Abstract:Abstract The digital preservation of intangible cultural heritage has become a major emphasis and challenge in China. This study investigated the state of the field by examining the activities of the local Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Centers at Nanyang, Kaifeng, Xianning, Chibi, Sanming and Jingdezhen, using semi-structured interviews to document the status of digital preservation of intangible cultural heritage in China. This study found that the digital preservation system of Chinese cultural heritage has a clear structure and pluralistic components. The centers are rich in digital resources, but disordered in their storage, and are supported by policies, but weak in the area of management. It is necessary to further clarify these institutions’ rights and responsibilities, formulate storage standards, build shared platforms, and strengthen digital preservation management.

The Lantern Festival has a long history and distinctive characteristics, becoming one of the most unique branches of Chinese lantern culture with its distinct cultural connotations and artistic features. This article will use analogy and literature analysis to study the cultural origin, folk content, forms of expression, unique charm, protection and inheritance of the Zigong Lantern Festival. It will explore new methods for intangible cultural heritage to help revitalize festival culture, new paths to realize economic and cultural value, and further promote the modernization development of excellent traditional Chinese culture.

Research on the spatiotemporal semantic model of intangible cultural heritage can show the multiple relationships of intangible cultural heritage spaces, which is conducive to the semantic description specification and effective expression of intangible cultural heritage spatiotemporal data.

Abstract:Abstract: Shui folk traditions and cultural activities cannot exist independently of Shui script masters. Script masters are like the living treasure houses, the inheritors, and the disseminators of the traditional culture of the Shui people. Oral history is one of the most effective carriers for the inheritance of the Shui people's traditional culture as it is composed of the Shui script masters' personal memories and tacit knowledge. Script masters play an indispensable role in the protection, inheritance, and development of the Shui script's intangible cultural heritage. Due to the small number and high age of the Shui script master community and the limitations of the preservation method of the script, the Shui script is facing a crisis. It is urgent to explore new methods and approaches for passing the Shui script down to the next generation. This research explores the construction of a knowledge base of the Shui script, using script masters' oral histories as the main source, to integrate it with related cultural heritage resources and adopt a more optimized method of organization. The platform and utility of the knowledge base builds a digital Shui script resource system and promotes the open use and protection of the Shui script.

Abstract:The evolution of digital communication modalities for China's intangible cultural heritage serves to broaden communication avenues and engage wider audiences, further unlocking the economic potential of the heritage industry. This progression is crucial for advancing the digitization of ICH during the 14th Five-Year Plan in China. Derived from the collective efforts of working individuals over extended periods of production and labor, each intangible culture possesses unique transmission traits. Representing an immaterial and irreplicable historical artifact, cultural memory, and the essence of the Chinese nation, its preservation and transmission are paramount for societal development. Given its profound regional character, the cultural significance and value of ICH are inherently evident. Amidst the mobile internet era, the digital preservation of this heritage has gained precedence, encompassing digital collection, storage, restoration, reproduction, exhibition, and dissemination. However, due to knowledge constraints and technological limitations, non-lineal inheritors face challenges in digitizing ICH.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the tradition of the Tibetan New Year celebration reflected in contemporary Chinese oil painting. The article’s purpose is to study the cultural features of the Tibetan New Year, on the example of works of the two Chinese artists: Pan Shixun and Ye Xingsheng, and to analyze the degree of art’s influence on the preservation of intangible cultural heritage. Chinese painting contributes to the unity of traditions of the past and present, as well as the integration of classical and contemporary elements in the technique of modern times. In their works, the masters, using elements of classical Chinese, Western and Tibetan painting, conveyed unique features of the national culture and history of Tibet. The work systematizes the complex of customs and religious rites, traditional costumes and treats of the Tibetan New Year festival. The artists’ works are considered as a mechanism for transmitting traditional Tibetan folk and religious art.

Abstract:This study aims to explore how local vocational colleges in Yueyang, Hunan Province, protect and inherit Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) through digital means. By analyzing the current status and challenges of ICH protection and considering the development trends of digital technology, the study focuses on the unique role of vocational colleges in the digital protection of ICH. Using literature reviews, interviews, and case studies, the study proposes specific pathways for the digital protection of ICH in Yueyang, including the construction of digital archives, digital education and training, digital display and dissemination, and social participation and interaction. The study finds that vocational colleges have multiple advantages in ICH protection, such as resource integration, talent cultivation, and technology application. The application of digital means will effectively enhance the efficiency of ICH protection and the breadth of its dissemination. Finally, the paper proposes relevant policy recommendations and implementation strategies to provide theoretical and practical references for promoting the digital protection of ICH.
Promoting the Culture of Qinhuai River Lantern Shadow Puppetry with a Digital Archive and Immersive Experience

Abstract:As an intangible cultural heritage, Chinese shadow puppetry is facing challenges in terms of its appeal and comprehension, especially among audiences from different cultural backgrounds. Additionally, the fragile materials of the puppets and obstacles to preservation pose further challenges. This study creates a digital archive of the Qinhuai River Lantern Festival shadow puppetry, utilizing digital technology to recreate scenes depicted in traditional Chinese poetry and painting. Moreover, this study employs a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, to evaluate the acceptance and audience experience of immersive shadow puppetry. An in-depth exploration was conducted from sensory, emotional, cultural dimensions and research hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling and other methods. The results indicate that enhancing ease of use and cultural experience can improve audience appeal and comprehension, while enhancing emotional experience can increase audience participation intention. Our research holds profound significance for the preservation and transmission of shadow puppetry.

Abstract:Despite a considerable body of research focusing on the preservation and promotion of intangible cultural heritage (ICH), the actual impact of ICH on shaping the cultural life of local communities needs further acknowledgement. Since 2004, China has rapidly engaged with ICH and the associated practices stipulated by UNESCO. Based on a critical analysis of two cultural festivals in China, this study illustrates the impact of official heritage discourse on local communities. Heritage policies have adopted a particular understanding of “culture” that certifies and beautifies related cultural practices and products for commercial purposes. However, these processes of cultural reproduction transform community-based leisure activities into tourism consumption for an external public. Such changes legitimize and reinforce social inequalities within state-society relationships. This study contributes to the broader discussion on the “right to heritage” – whose rights and what rights should be considered in the issues that ICH creates as a form of cultural reproduction

Abstract:In recent years, the development and utilization of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) has become an increasingly significant research topic. Worldwide, however, little research has been systematically and comprehensively conducted to review relevant ICH literature. The application CiteSpace was used to identify the research hotspots, frontiers, and trends in China’s ICH field from 2003 to 2020. The results showed that the quantity of published literature has steadily increased throughout the respective period. Scholars and research institutions alike have shown poor cooperation whereby ICH protection received most of the attention. In addition, the digitalization of ICH is an inevitable trend in ICH protection and inheritance, while the combination of ICH and cultural industries constitutes an important approach to ICH utilization and communication. Hence, the ultimate goal of ICH research consists of seeking ways to achieve its sustainable development to satisfy the increasing cultural demands. Findings furthermore show that ICH for rural revitalization constitutes a unique research topic with Chinese characteristics. This study provides insights for scholars and practitioners worldwide to facilitate a better understanding of ICH in China.

It is significantly necessary to think about how to inherit and develop the traditional culture of our nation. The twenty-four solar terms — the time knowledge system and its practice formed by the Chinese people through observing the annual motion of the sun declared by China on November 30, 2016 has been enlisted into Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Intangible cultural heritage has unique cultural genes and values as a typical representative of traditional culture. The design of cultural and creative derivatives based on it has good commercial value and can inherit and develop China's traditional culture. The Revival and Restructuring of a Traditional Folk Festival: Cultural Landscape and Memory in Guangzhou, South China

Abstract:Landscape is an important object for research on local culture from a cultural geographical perspective. It is the spatial nature of memory that has seen the integrative study of memory and landscape receive increased attention from human geographers. The Qiqiao Festival is a traditional folk festival in the Lingnan region of Southern China. After half a century of suppression, the Qiqiao Festival in Zhucun was publically revitalized as the Guangzhou Qiqiao Cultural Festival, which coincided with the changing structure and significance of the landscape. This paper selected Zhucun, a typical urban village, as its case study and constructed an index system of festival landscapes. Through in-depth interviews, this paper studied the revival and restructure process of the Qiqiao Festival, and the role that landscapes play in the formation mechanism of memory on the part of subjects with different identities. The results showed that the elite and the local government selectively restructure festival landscapes, replacing authentic landscapes with “official” ones. The selection and production of a festival landscape constructed different memories among the subjects, where the festival memory of grassroots villagers was self-constructed and mostly came from traditional festival landscape elements while top-down interventions in the festival landscape constructed a different “official” memory for citizens and migrants to those of the villagers. The contemporary festival deviates from the original, which has weakened the conscious degree of cultural evolution and has had a reaction on the authenticity of memory. This research serves a reference for approaches in planning and conserving intangible cultural heritage in historic villages.

Abstract:Implementing computational methods for preservation,inheritance,and promotion of Cultural Her-itage(CH)has become a research trend across the world since the 1990s.In China,generations of scholars have dedicated themselves to studying the country's rich CH resources;there are great potential and opportunities in the field of computational research on specific cultural artefacts or artforms.Based on previous works,this paper proposes a systematic framework for Chinese Cultural Heritage Computing that consists of three conceptual levels which are Chinese CH protection and development strategy,computing process,and computable cultural ecosystem.The computing process includes three modules:(1)data acquisition and processing,(2)digital modeling and database con-struction,and(3)data application and promotion.The modules demonstrate the computing approaches corresponding to different phases of Chinese CH protection and development,from digital preservation and inheritance to presentation and promotion.The computing results can become the basis for the generation of cultural genes and eventually the formation of computable cultural ecosystem Case studies on the Mogao caves in Dunhuang and the art of Guqin,recognized as world's important tangible and intangible cultural heritage,are carried out to elaborate the computing process and methods within the framework.With continuous advances in data collection,processing,and display technologies,the framework can provide constructive reference for building up future research roadmaps in Chinese CH computing and related fields,for sustainable protection and development of Chinese CH in the digital age.
