Abstract:In the newly excavated epitaphs, there are three concerned Liu Changqing, a famous poet in the middle Tang dynasty. Depending on the epitaphs and other presented documents, we can further discuss several problems about Liu Changqing’s life story. First, he was the chief military officer in Junyi county, Chenliu prefecture. Secondly, the date of his success in the highest imperial examination is determined with the new proofs. Thirdly, the time when he was the imperial supervisor can be determined now. Fourthly the time when he became the Zhuanyun judge of E-yue is cleared.

Abstract:From 1929 till 1931, some members of Xin Association, Hu Shi, Luo Longji, Liang Shiqiu, etc., established Ping Association. With Xin Yue as position, they mobilized famous Rights Activities, attacked Nationalist Party's admonitory politics system, requested human rights of democratic constitutionalism, and published The Collection of Works on Human Rights. In late, weak and compromised Chinese bourgeois liberalist activities, and with the late declaration of human rights, Hu Shi and his friends publicized thoughts on right of freedom from human rights' point of view. In other words, it could be said that it was result of direct connections between Chinese and Western thinkers. However, since Nationalist Party could not accept their thoughts and activities, finally Hu Shi was rebuked by Educational Department. And in 1930, he was removed from position as President of Zhongguo Gongxue by Nationalist Government.

Abstract:The first decade of 1900s was the decade when great changes had taken place in Chinese traditional education.The abolition of the imperial examination system,the issue and implementation of modern school system and the establishment of a large number of new-style schools had greatly shocked the souls of millions of scholars who studied earnestly day and night under the old educational system and had a lot to do with their future and destinies.As a traditional scholar benefiting from imperial examination system,facing great educational changes in the early 1900s,the cognition and activities of Yun Yuding,on the one hand,were greatly influenced by his growth and traditional culture.He felt distressful,grieved and enraged at the collapse of mainstream value system of the feudal society;on the other hand,the consideration of the interests of his family and himself impelled him to get involved into the changes consciously and unconsciously.All the conflicts and paradoxes shown in his lectures and activities were actually a miniature of the complexities of the Chinese intellectuals in the early 1900s and reflected a cultural predicament confronting the intellectuals in times of critical transformation.

Abstract:Qian Xuantong changed his ideological position from original ethnic chauvinism to radical anti-traditionalism when he joined the New Youth in 1907 .Through an exploration on Qian’s diaries, correspondences and published articles during this peri-od, it can be found that there were three motivations which resulted in his move towards the radical anti-traditionalism, namely his admiration for the sophisticated text research methods of the new text Confucianism, the revival of his enthusiasm for anar-chism, and his frequent exchange of ideas with Lu Xun.As the ideological disputes among the New Youth colleagues had been increasingly brought into open, especially after the May Fourth Movement had placed the political revolution on agenda, Qian gradually became anxious about the upcoming destructive effects of the revolution and moved again to a more conservative doc-trine of being self-responsible and self-interest.The capriciousness of Qian’s ideological position reveals the rootlessness of the i-dea and the absence of conviction, which is actually the typical spiritual characteristic of some sort of modern Chinese intellectuals.

Abstract:British troops marched into Lhasa in 1904 and launched the second war on Tibet.It complicated the Tibetan issue,which was given a timely and full report in the newspapers and periodicals of Shanghai and other places.A group of open-minded people,like Yang Shukan,living in Chongqing,a comparatively closed place,started a newspaper "Guang Yi Cong Bao",which followed the newspapers and periodicals of Shanghai and other places to report the Tibetan issue in order to have the readers in many other cities around Chongqing get to know it.This newspaper exposed the British imperialist's aggression in Tibet,and discussed the success and failure of the Chinese government's administration on Tibet.It also illustrated ordinary people's attention toward the Tibetan issue and reported the "new policies" practiced by the officials resident of Tibet.It kept stressing on the inviolability of the sovereignty.There are more than one hundred reports about the Tibetan issue in the newspaper with more than forty thousand words,which is important material for us to study the issues of Tibet in the late Qing Dynasty and also can be used as powerful evidence to criticize the view of "Tibet is independent".

Abstract:Although “reportage” as a term was first introduced in China in 1931, it gained new momentum in early 1936 with the translation of Egon Erwin Kisch’s theory on reportage. This translation was soon followed by a surge in Chinese reportage written by figures such as Zhou Libo, Xia Yan, and Qian Junrui. In 1936, Chinese reportage writing and theory moved away from the earlier emphasis on class consciousness to a new focus on the value of observation and social analysis. This change aligned with the Soviet Union’s rediscovery of world literature by bourgeois writers amidst the global anti-fascist battle. More importantly, as a part of the Popularization of Literature and Art Movement, reportage was beneficial to a large number of educated youths who had lived in the cities such as Shanghai and then retreated to the hinterland after the Sino-Japanese War broke out in 1937. Through its incorporation of sociological achievements, this new form of reportage became a tool that educated young people could use to inform themselves and seek to enlighten the masses.

Abstract:Yu Pingbo represents a unique case in the Chinese literary world,who supported "Literature revolution" in the early 1920s and departed from the literature mainstream in the 1930s. During the period,he participated in "Xinchao" Association of Poets and edited "Wenxue Tri-monthly". While serving as the editor-in-chief of both "Our June" and "Our July",he wrote articles for "Camel grass". Yu Pingbo’s close links with literature journals influenced his writing style and art concept,who adhered to the pursuit of the modernity of literature.

Abstract:Chen Duxiu's life is a legend,full of opposition,intensity,and subversion.The core of his idea is to clear up and reconstruct the relationship between "nation" and "nationals" during the thorough transition from empire to republic,and on that basis develop a modern country.By making a voice of time,he became the center of attention.By caring for the rising group of new youth,he won a large number of followers.Additionally by pioneering the transformations from nation to nationals and from politics to culture,Chen Duxiu,together with Hu Shih,replaced Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao to be the represents of the era.The responsibility of intellectuals changed him from a person who never discussed political affairs to participate in political revolutions,and even claim himself to be a politician for a long time.But in fact politics was not his advantage,and in the lonely later years he eventually returned to the academic circle.

Abstract:In a famous article written in 1928 when the Left-wing writers of the Sun and Creation Societies were criticising Lu Xun for being behind the times, Qian Xingcun (A Ying) asserted that the age of Ah Q was already past. Fifty years later Chen Baichen's dramatization of Ah Q Zhengzhuan , which was staged in 1981 as part of the Lu Xun centenary celebrations, ends with the narrator declaring that although Ah Q had no women it was not true that he would have no descendants, because his line would continue for generations to come. It is, of course, possible to reconcile these two apparently contradictory statements. Qian Xingcun was referring to the fact that the peasant masses were becoming politically organized, having played an important role in the revolutionary movements of those years. He did not claim that people like Ah Q no longer existed. Chen Baichen, on the other hand, was referring to the Ah Q mentality which still lives on in people's minds, long after Ah Q himself has been executed. He did not see this mentality as the dominant force in society. Nevertheless there have been striking changes of attitude towards Ah Q in recent years. Since the end of the Cultural Revolution it has been generally recognized that the Ah Q mentality is still a force in China which is holding back attempts at modernization and that many other aspects of the Chinese traditional society and culture which Lu Xun criticized in his stories and essays have still not been eradicated 45 years after his death.
