Pseudo-Deterministic Construction of Irreducible Polynomials over Finite Fields

Abstract:We present a polynomial-time pseudo-deterministic algorithm for constructing irreducible polynomial of degree $d$ over finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. A pseudo-deterministic algorithm is allowed to use randomness, but with high probability it must output a canonical irreducible polynomial. Our construction runs in time $\tilde{O}(d^4 \log^4{q})$. Our construction extends Shoup's deterministic algorithm (FOCS 1988) for the same problem, which runs in time $\tilde{O}(d^4 p^{\frac{1}{2}} \log^4{q})$ (where $p$ is the characteristic of the field $\mathbb{F}_q$). Shoup had shown a reduction from constructing irreducible polynomials to factoring polynomials over finite fields. We show that by using a fast randomized factoring algorithm, the above reduction yields an efficient pseudo-deterministic algorithm for constructing irreducible polynomials over finite fields.

In this paper, we consider the irreducible polynomials over , where k is an odd integer and the coefficients are in the form with at least one . For a given such irreducible polynomial F ( x ) over , we provide an algorithm to construct an irreducible polynomial over , where the 's are explicitly given in terms of the 's. This gives a bijective correspondence between irreducible polynomials over and . This fact generalizes many recent results on this subject in the literature.

Abstract:We consider the set of monic irreducible polynomials $P$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that the multiplicative order modulo $P$ of some a in $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ is divisible by a fixed positive integer $d$. Call $R_q(a,d)$ this set. We show the existence or non-existence of the density of $R_q(a,d)$ for three distinct notions of density. In particular, the sets $R_q(a,d)$ have a Dirichlet density. Under some assumptions, we prove simple formulas for the density values.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and $q$ a power of $p$. Let $\fq$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. For a positive integer $n$ and a polynomial $\varphi(X)\in\fq[X]$, let $d_{n,\varphi}(X)$ denote the denominator of the $n$th iterate of $\frac{1}{\varphi(X)}$. The polynomial $\varphi(X)$ is said to be inversely stable over $\fq$ if all polynomials $d_{n,\varphi}(X)$ are irreducible polynomial over $\fq$ and distinct. In this paper, we characterize a class of inversely stable polynomials over $\fq$. Actually, for $\varphi(X)=X^p-X+\xi\in\fq[X]$, we provide a sufficient and necessary condition for $\varphi(X)$ to be inversely stable over $\fq$.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the field with $q$ elements and of characteristic $p$. For $a\in\mathbb{F}_p$ consider the set \begin{equation*} S_a(n)=\{f\in\mathbb{F}_q[x]\mid\operatorname{deg}(f)=n,~f\text{ irreducible, monic and} \operatorname{Tr}(f)=a\}. \end{equation*} In a recent paper, Robert Granger proved for $q=2$ and $n\ge 2$ that $|S_1(n)|-|S_0(n)|= 0$ if $2\nmid n$ and $|S_1(n)|-|S_0(n)|=|S_1(n/2)|$ if $2\mid n$. We will prove a generalization of this result for all finite fields. This is possible due to an observation about the size of certain subsets of monic irreducible polynomials arising in the context of a group action of subgroups of $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ on monic polynomials. Additionally, it enables us to apply these methods to prove two further results that are very similar in nature.

Abstract:Let F-q be the finite field of order q and f (x) be an irreducible polynomial of degree n over F-q. For a positive divisor n(1) of n, define the n(1)-traces of f (x) to be Tr(alpha; n(1)) = alpha+alpha(q) +...+alpha(qn1-1) where alpha's are the roots of f (x). Let N-q*(n; n(1)) denote the number of monic irreducible polynomials of degree n over F-q with nozero n(1)-traces. Ruskey, Miers and Sawada have found the formula for N-q*(n; n). Based on the properties of linearized polynomials, we obtain the formula for N-q*(n; n(1)) in the general case, including a new proof to the result by Ruskey, Miers and Sawada.

Abstract:We study a random polynomial of degree $n$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the coefficients are independent and identically distributed and uniformly chosen from the squares in $\mathbb{F}_q$. Our main result demonstrates that the likelihood of such a polynomial being irreducible approaches $1/n + O(q^{-1/2})$ as the field size $q$ grows infinitely large. The analysis we employ also applies to polynomials with coefficients selected from other specific sets.

Abstract:Given a prime number $p$, we consider the tower of finite fields $F_p=L_{-1}\subset L_0\subset L_1\subset\cdots$, where each step corresponds to an Artin-Schreier extension of degree $p$, so that for $i\geq 0$, $L_{i}=L_{i-1}[c_{i}]$, where $c_i$ is a root of $X^p-X-a_{i-1}$ and $a_{i-1}=(c_{-1}\cdots c_{i-1})^{p-1}$, with $c_{-1}=1$. We extend and strengthen to arbitrary primes prior work of Popovych for $p=2$ on the multiplicative order of the given generator $c_i$ for $L_i$ over $L_{i-1}$. In particular, for $i\geq 0$, we show that $O(c_i)=O(a_i)$, except only when $p=2$ and $i=1$, and that $O(c_i)$ is equal to the product of the orders of $c_j$ modulo $L_{j-1}^\times$, where $0\leq j\leq i$ if $p$ is odd, and $i\geq 2$ and $1\leq j\leq i$ if $p=2$. We also show that for $i\geq 0$, the $\mathrm{Gal}(L_i/L_{i-1})$-conjugates of $a_i$ form a normal basis of $L_i$ over $L_{i-1}$. In addition, we obtain the minimal polynomial of $c_1$ over $F_p$ in explicit form.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a rational fraction and let $f$ be a polynomial over a finite field. Consider the transform $T(f)=\operatorname{numerator}(f(S))$. In certain cases, the polynomials $f$, $T(f)$, $T(T(f))\dots$ are all irreducible. For instance, in odd characteristic, this is the case for the rational fraction $S=(x^2+1)/(2x)$, known as the $R$-transform, and for a positive density of all irreducible polynomials $f$. We interpret these transforms in terms of isogenies of elliptic curves. Using complex multiplication theory, we devise algorithms to generate a large number of other rational fractions $S$, each of which yields infinite families of irreducible polynomials for a positive density of starting irreducible polynomials $f$.

Abstract:We determine all permutations in two large classes of polynomials over finite fields, where the construction of the polynomials in each class involves the denominators of a class of rational functions generalizing the classical Redei functions. Our results generalize eight recent results from the literature, and our proofs of our more general results are much shorter and simpler than the previous proofs of special cases.

Abstract:Let $ \mathbb{F}_q $ be the finite field of $ q $ elements, and $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ its extension of degree $ n $. A normal basis of $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ over $ \mathbb{F}_q $ is a basis of the form $ \{\alpha, \alpha^{q}, \cdots, \alpha^{q^{n-1}}\} $. Some problems on normal bases can be finally reduced to the determination of the irreducible factors of the polynomial $ x^{n}-1 $ in $ \mathbb{F}_q $, while the latter is closely related to the cyclotomic polynomials. Denote by $ \mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1) $ the set of all distinct monic irreducible factors of $ x^{n}-1 $ in $ \mathbb{F}_q $. The criteria for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)|\leq 2 $\end{document} have been studied in the literature. In this paper, we provide the sufficient and necessary conditions for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)| = s, $\end{document} where $ s $ is a positive integer by using the properties of cyclotomic polynomials and results from the Diophantine equations. As an application, we obtain the sufficient and necessary conditions for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)| = 3, 4, 5. $\end{document}

Abstract:Let $c$ be a fixed integer such that $c \in \{0,2\}.$ Let $n$ be a positive integer such that either $n\geq 2$ or $2n+1 \neq 3^u$ for any integer $u\geq 2$ according as $c = 0$ or not. Let $\phi(x)$ belonging to $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a monic polynomial which is irreducible modulo all primes less than $2n+c$. Let $a_i(x)$ with $0\leq i\leq n-1$ belonging to $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ be polynomials having degree less than $°\phi(x)$. Let $a_n \in \mathbb{Z}$ and the content of $(a_na_0(x))$ is not divisible by any prime less than $2n+c$. For a positive integer $j$, if $u_j$ denotes the product of the odd numbers $\leq j$, then we show that the polynomial $\frac{a_{n}}{u_{2n+c}}\phi(x)^{2n}+\sum\limits_{j=0}^{n-1}a_j(x)\frac{\phi(x)^{2j}}{u_{2j+c}}$ is irreducible over the field $\mathbb{Q}$ of rational numbers. This generalises a well-known result of Schur which states that the polynomial $\sum\limits_{j=0}^{n}a_j\frac{x^{2j}}{u_{2j+c}}$ with $a_j \in \mathbb{Z}$ and $|a_0| = |a_n| = 1$ is irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$. We illustrate our result through examples.

Abstract:The realization of semiconductors that are ferromagnetic above room temperature will potentially lead to a new generation of spintronic devices with revolutionary electrical and optical properties. Transition temperatures in doped ZnO are high but, particularly for Mn doping, the reported moments have been small. We show that by careful control of both oxygen deficiency and aluminium doping the ferromagnetic moments measured at room temperature in n-type ZnMnO and ZnCoO are close to the ideal values of 5mB and 3mB respectively. Furthermore a clear correlation between the magnetisation per transition metal ion and the ratio of the number of carriers to the number of transition metal donors was established as is expected for carrier induced ferromagnetism for both the Mn and Co doped films. The dependence of the magnetisation on carrier density is similar to that predicted for the transition temperature for a dilute magnetic semiconductor in which the exchange between the transition metal ions is through the free carriers.

Abstract:Let $n\geq 2$ be an integer. Let $\phi(x)$ belonging to $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a monic polynomial which is irreducible modulo all primes less than or equal to $n$. Let $a_0(x), a_1(x), \dots, a_{n-1}(x)$ belonging to $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ be polynomials each having degree less than $°\phi(x)$ and $a_n$ be an integer. Assume that $a_n$ and the content of $a_0(x)$ are coprime with $n!$. In the present paper, we prove that the polynomial $\sum\limits_{i=0}^{n-1} a_i(x)\frac{\phi(x)^i}{i!}+a_n\frac{\phi(x)^n}{n!}$ is irreducible over the field $\mathbb{Q}$ of rational numbers. This generalizes a well known result of Schur which states that the polynomial $\sum\limits_{i=0}^{n} a_i\frac{x^i}{i!}$ is irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$ for all $n\geq 1$ when each $a_i\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $|a_0|=|a_n|=1$. The present paper also extends a result of Filaseta thereby leading to a generalization of the classical Schönemann Irreducibility Criterion.

Abstract:An irreducible polynomial over F q is said to be normal over F q if its roots are linearly independent over F q . We show that there is a polynomial h n ( X 1 , … , X n ) ∈ Z [ X 1 , … , X n ] , independent of q, such that if an irreducible polynomial f = X n + a 1 X n − 1 + ⋯ + a n ∈ F q [ X ] is such that h n ( a 1 , … , a n ) ≠ 0 , then f is normal over F q . The polynomial h n ( X 1 , … , X n ) is computed explicitly for n ≤ 5 and partially for n = 6 . When char F q = p , we also show that there is a polynomial h p , n ( X 1 , … , X n ) ∈ F p [ X 1 , … , X n ] , depending on p, which is simpler than h n but has the same property. These results remain valid for monic separable irreducible polynomials over an arbitrary field with a cyclic Galois group.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct several new permutation polynomials over finite fields. First, using the linearized polynomials, we construct the permutation polynomial of the form $\sum_{i=1}^k(L_{i}(x)+\gamma_i)h_i(B(x))$ over ${\bf F}_{q^{m}}$, where $L_i(x)$ and $B(x)$ are linearized polynomials. This extends a theorem of Coulter, Henderson and Matthews. Consequently, we generalize a result of Marcos by constructing permutation polynomials of the forms $x h(\lambda_{j}(x))$ and $xh(\mu_{j}(x))$, where $\lambda_{j}(x)$ is the $j$-th elementary symmetric polynomial of $x, x^{q}, ..., x^{q^{m-1}}$ and $\mu_{j}(x)=\textup{Tr}_{{\bf F}_{q^{m}}/{\bf F}_{q}}(x^{j})$. This answers an open problem raised by Zieve in 2010. Finally, by using the linear translator, we construct the permutation polynomial of the form $L_1(x)+L_{2}(\gamma)h(f(x))$ over ${\bf F}_{q^{m}}$, which extends a result of Kyureghyan.

On the frequency of primes preserving dynamical irreducibility of polynomials

Abstract:Towards a well-known open question in arithmetic dynamics, L. Mérai, A. Ostafe and I. E. Shparlinski (2023), have shown, for a class of polynomials $f \in \mathbb Z[X]$, which in particular includes all quadratic polynomials, that, under some natural conditions (necessary for quadratic polynomials), the set of primes $p$, such that all iterations of $f$ are irreducible modulo $p$, is of relative density zero, with an explicit estimate on the rate of decay. This result relies on some bounds on character sums via the Brun sieve. Here we use the Selberg sieve and in some cases obtain a substantial quantitative improvement.

Abstract:For a field $K$, and a root $\alpha$ of an irreducible polynomial over $K$ (in some algebraic closure) the number of roots of $f(x)$ lying in $K(\alpha)$ is studied here. Given such an $f(x)$ of degree $n$ for which $r$ of the roots are i n $K(\alpha)$, we describe a construction that yields, for $d\ge2$, irreducible polynomials of degree $nd$ and with exactly $rd$ of the roots in the field generated by any one root of those polynomials. Our results are valid for all number fields and possibly some more perfect fields. As an application, for $K=Q$ and positive integers $n\ge3,d\ge2$, we provide irreducible polynomials of degree $nd$ with exactly $d$ roots in the field generated by one of the roots. Independently, for $k<n$, we construct irreducible polynomials over the rationals of degree $n!/(n-k)!$ for which the field generated by one root contains exactly $k!$ roots. Many interesting new questions for further research are provided.
