Analysis of Traffic Flow Characteristics under Large Volume in Highway Tunnel Group Region

Abstract:Based on the field monitoring data of traffic flow in a typical highway tunnel group region, the traffic flow characteristics were analyzed with statistical analyzing method of the relationship among the speed, volume and density of the traffic flow. The result shows that the traffic capacity in highway tunnel group region was mainly controlled by the traffic volume, the traffic flow component and so on. The existing methods in present code could not reflect the real situation of the traffic flow under large traffic volume in the highway tunnel group region. The paper investigated the passenger car equivalent with method of vehicle headway analysis based on field monitoring data. Then the traffic capacity and the service level were re-evaluated on the results of above new passenger car equivalent. The results reflect the real traffic situation in the highway tunnel group area better than the method provided in the existing code. The data and results presented in the paper can be used for further analysis of the traffic flow in the highway tunnel group area and for the purpose of corresponding code revision.

Abstract:As the perfection of high speed railway network, the functional value of city of high speed rail station has become the hot spot of domestic urban construction. However, there is lack of a clear and rational planning of the high speed railway district that is critical for the future endeavor. Based on the theoretical and practical analysis of development of Hong Kong MTR, this paper summarizes some experience and puts forward an idea of constructing convention and exhibition center integrated into high speed rail station which will reduce the time cost and relieve traffic pressure in the city, to provide references for the future development of the high speed rail station in the direction of comprehensive and multifunctional.

Abstract:Regarding the exclusive characteristics of mixed traffic in China, this paper offers some ideas to design scenarios for mixed urban traffic control after analyzing the characteristics of urban networks and traffic flow. Based on mix-flow theories, the paper establishes a system, namely HiCON, of urban mixed traffic control, including ramp metering, single-point control, coordinated arterial and regional control, and transit priority control. Implementations of HiCON in Beijing, Qingdao, and Fuzhou, respectively, have shown promising results: 10-20% reduction of delay, and 5-10% reduction of travel time, both for vehicles and in average.

Abstract:"Highway free during the holidays" policies implemented by our government caused serious congestion problems. How to further improve the efficiency of the highway so that it can be scientifically used whatever free or not becomes a typical problem in effective supply of public goods. Firstly, public goods attribute of highway under different scenarios were discussed to explain the principles of highway toll, and the root causes of highway extension fees, charges exorbitant issues were analyzed. Use economics to analyze severe congestion reasons caused by highway free meanwhile referring advanced experience of developed countries and regions in supplying the highway and put forward suggestions to achieve effective supply of highway in our country.

Abstract:China has become the country with the most highspeed railway facilities, and Chinese residents are enjoying the convenience brought by high-speed railway. Nevertheless, the distribution of passenger flow has become a bottleneck to improve the service level of high-speed railway stations. Most of the existing hub connection schemes rely on the experience of designers, and a large number of evaluation methods focus on the connection capacity, service level and other aspects. So, the passenger transfer efficiency cannot be guaranteed. Based on this, the paper analyzes the connection facilities, passenger transfer mode and passenger walking characteristics in highspeed railway passenger transport hub. By using VISSIM and SketchUp, this paper establishes the connection analysis model of high-speed railway passenger transport hub, and the passenger transfer efficiency is evaluated from the internal and external connection. Then, taking Ningbo Station as an example, the feasibility, accuracy and reliability of connecting simulation technology of high-speed railway passenger hub based on VISSIM is verified. The research results can provide technical support for the layout design and optimization of high-speed railway passenger transport hub, and also provide an idea for BIM Technology in the analysis of transport hub connection process.

Abstract:Abstract Green highway construction is the concrete action of the highway industry to continuously improve the development concept. It is the inheritance of green and mysterious low-carbon highway in the new period. Green highway is the use of energy saving, low-carbon and environmental protection technology in the new period. Urban roads are crisscrossed, pipelines such as gas, electricity and water conservancy are densely distributed. The sensitive points such as villages and hospitals are widely distributed, and land pressure is high. These complex characteristics make construction difficult. Therefore, it is of great significance to focus on the construction of the urban road green transportation technology demonstration project with the theme of “green construction and safety first” and build a green highway with urban characteristics.

Abstract:In this paper, two parallel worldwide tends of transportation systems are pointed out: Integrated Transportation System, Intelligent Transport System. The necessity of Integrated Transportation System is discussed. The connotation of Integrated Transportation System should be understood as follows: for optimizing of transportation resource, for integrating of travel demand management, and for including of total processes of transportation systems. The extension of Integrated Transportation System is presented. The paper focuses on the two problems: the relationship between Integrated Transportation System and ITS, the relationship between ITS and Traffic Engineering. Abstract:High-speed rail (HSR) has played an important role in China’s long-distance travel. However, the potential of this transport technology to meet the demand of passenger mobility at the metropolitan scale is still unclear. This research examines this potential by studying transportation investment for intercity passenger mobility in the Shenzhen-Dongguan-Huizhou Metropolitan Area, where multiple fixed guideway transit systems have been proposed and HSR service has been implemented to carry passengers between central Shenzhen and outer portions of this metropolitan region. Comparison of alternative modes explains why HSR is competitive at the metropolitan scale. Interviews with relevant stakeholders reveal the institutional conditions for utilizing the national HSR system for regional passenger mobility.

Abstract:The high-speed railway has been developed rapidly, and the topological structure and transportation organization of the railway network have changed greatly. In this paper, China's high-speed railway is taken as the research object and train flow network is established. Indexes are calculated from the perspective of the network and transportation organization. The comprehensive evaluation index is determined with TOPSIS method to identify key indicators of the station. The example identifies not only the provincial capital stations, but also the stations with small scale but critical position affecting the whole network transportation service capacity. The research of high-speed railway network property contributes to forming the transport organization strategy, which makes the network service feature more robust and helps for the optimization of railway network infrastructure.

Abstract:Economy development and promotion of high-speed transport technologies result in the increase of inter-city high-speed passenger transport. The energy consumption over the lifetime of transport infrastructure, composed of construction and operation energy consumption, is a significant factor that should be considered at the planning stage. In this paper, we present a mixed-integer programming (MIP) model based on superstructure for the energy consumption optimization of inter-city high-speed transport systems, a network design integration of aviation and high-speed railway, accounting both energy consumption during infrastructure construction and energy consumption during subsequent operation processes, to optimize connections between large population centers and connections between modes of transport. Energy consumption during infrastructure construction is obtained related to investment costs using a lifecycle assessment based on the economic input-output method. The shares of construction energy consumption and operation energy consumption during infrastructure lifetime are compared in the case studies of East and Southeast China and the model results show the optimized network structure according to the total energy minimization objective. Optimized transport networks are analyzed in terms of hub-spoke characteristics and city transport functions as sources and sinks. Model results have implications in the energy-saving aspect for actual high-speed railway and civil aviation infrastructure layouts and high-speed transport technology development.
Analysis on Space-time Distribution Characteristics of Passenger Flow along Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway Stations

Abstract:In this paper,the upper and lower net passenger traffic volume analysis model was established by the remaining tickets information of high speed railway (HSR),and the characteristics of passenger flow along Beijing-Shanghai HSR line was analysed.The following conclusions can be drawn.1) The traditional urban breaking point theory can be applied to the analysis of the two cities with a small urban function level difference.However,this theory holds the limitation for the two cities with a great urban function level difference.The reason is that the radiation force of the high urban function level city may cover that of the low urban function level city.At the same time,it is found that the space-time characteristics of the passenger flow of the Beijing-Shanghai HSR is a new evidence of the traditional urban hinterland division.2) An obvious "next day effect" appears in the Beijing-Shanghai HSR,which is beneficial to increase the probability of business,tourism and other events.Especially,an obvious "intercity effect" appears in the section of Shanghai-Nanjing.In addition,the Beijing-Shanghai HSR also strengthens the relations among these regions of 1 hour of space and time distance between the cities.3) The Beijing-Shanghai HSR can promote intercity commuter phenomenon.It is beneficial to the division of labor between cities.The passenger in Xuzhou station is mainly flow to the Yangtze River Delta region.The Suzhou north station is a typical representative for "intercity effect" in Shanghai-Nanjing section of the Beijing-Shanghai HSR.

Speed-measuring and Statistical Research of Vehicles on Two Intercity Highways in Jiaxing

Abstract:Taking two sections of highway within the borders of Jiaxing from G15w Changzhou-Taizhou Highway and G60 Shanghai-Kunming Highway respectively as subjects, this article researches into the traffic flow on double-lane and multi-lane by field shooting, speed data collecting and statistical analysis. It is discovered that the traffic flow of intercity highway with higher proportion of freight vehicle is different from that of urban expressway. There is obvious difference between the velocity distribution of passenger car and freight vehicle, and the general vehicle velocity distribution reveals the feature of double peak. Based on these discoveries, it is proposed in this article that a five-parameter probability density function which can depict the double peak feature of vehicle velocity distribution. All the parameters have clear physical meaning and can be adjusted according to different position, height and variance of peak value in concrete problems. According to the result of fitting and optimizing three measured samples, distance between two peak values of multi-lane section is larger than that of double-lane section, while the concentrative degree of speed data(especially speed of freight vehicle) in weekend is higher than that of working day.
Critical Issues of High Speed Rail Development in China

Abstract:China is building the largest high speed rail network in the world. Apart from the stated objective to enhance economic development, China has not fully optimized the potential impacts of developing a high speed rail network, including regional development and modal shares. This paper analyses the critical issues of Chinese high speed rail development and recommends policy directions in the light of world experiences of high speed rail development. Limited accessibility and connectivity to newly constructed high speed rail lines are common problems resulting in low patronage and low modal share; also financial sustainability is doubtful. Smaller cities, towns and peripheral regions may not be benefited as predicted. This paper proposes possible policy options including designating railway development zones, implementing comprehensive development plans along high speed rail lines as well as adopting a joint railway and property development financial model. The analysis and recommendations are relevant to other countries which plan to develop high speed rail.

Abstract:An appropriate infrastructure of fast charging stations is critical to customers for adopting plug-in electric vehicles. In this paper, we investigated the siting and sizing problem of fast charging stations in a highway network, where the budget constraint and the service capacities of charging spots are considered. The utility theory is employed to analyze drivers' charging strategies, and an iterative approach is developed to calculate the equilibrium distribution of vehicle flows in the network when the charging infrastructure is insufficient. Based on the assignment rules of the drivers for each charging station, a mixed integer programming model is developed to formulate the problem. Three algorithms, including the genetic algorithm, a problem specified heuristic and an algorithm by combining the heuristic and genetic algorithm, are employed to maximize the overall valid plug-in electric vehicles flows in the network. A practical case based on the highway network in Hebei, China, is investigated, through which the proposed approach is illustrated and the critical factors impacting the deployment of charging infrastructures are analyzed. The analysis results indicate that improving the endurance range may be one of the most efficient ways to expend the adaption of plug-in electric vehicles in a highway network. Random networks and practical networks with different sizes are used to test the robustness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms.
