Abstract:We formulate the $O(3)$ non-linear sigma model in 1+1 dimensions as a limit of a three-component scalar field theory restricted to the unit sphere in the large squeezing limit. This allows us to describe the model in terms of the continuous variable (CV) approach to quantum computing. We construct the ground state and excited states using the coupled-cluster Ansatz and find excellent agreement with the exact diagonalization results for a small number of lattice sites. We then present the simulation protocol for the time evolution of the model using CV gates and obtain numerical results using a photonic quantum simulator. We expect that the methods developed in this work will be useful for exploring interesting dynamics for a wide class of sigma models and gauge theories, as well as for simulating scattering events on quantum hardware in the coming decades.

Abstract:It is known that the $SU(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model is dual to the free fermion theory in two dimensions via non-Abelian bosonization. Additionally, the $SU(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model is believed to be equivalent to the $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model with the theta term. In this work, we reexamine this duality through the lens of renormalization group (RG) flow. We analyze the RG flow structure of the $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model with the theta term in two dimensions using the functional renormalization group. Our results reveal a nontrivial fixed point with a nonzero value of the topological coupling. The scaling dimensions (critical exponents) at this fixed point suggest the realization of duality between the $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model with the theta term and the free fermion theory, indicating that these models belong to the same universality class.

On the infrared limit of the O(3) nonlinear $σ$-model at $θ= π$

Abstract:2D nonlinear sigma models with Hermitian symmetric target admit a theta-term, which couples the field theory to the topological charge of its instanton gas. At the special coupling theta = pi, by what is nowadays attributed to a coupling-constant anomaly of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type, such models have a degenerate ground state. Yet, the details of their non-trivial infrared limit have remained open in general. Here we suggest that non-perturbative renormalization group flow into the strong-coupling regime induces strong fluctuations of the theta-parameter, with the consequence that the instanton density is suppressed, the target-space topology effectively altered, and the target-space metric driven off reality and into geometrostasis. Assuming this heuristic scenario and combining it with a Cauchy process of target-space deformation, we present a detailed argument that the O(3) nonlinear sigma model at theta = pi, known to be the effective field theory for critical antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains with large half-integer spin, renormalizes to the conformal field theory of a U(1) boson compactified at a special radius with SU(2) symmetry. A closely related scenario applies to Pruisken's nonlinear sigma model for the integer quantum Hall transition.

Abstract:We perform a tensor network simulation of the (1+1)-dimensional O(3) nonlinear σ-model with θ=π term. Within the Hamiltonian formulation, this field theory emerges as the finite-temperature partition function of a modified quantum rotor model decorated with magnetic monopoles. Using the monopole harmonics basis, we derive the matrix representation for this modified quantum rotor model, which enables tensor network simulations. We employ our recently developed continuous matrix product operator method [Tang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 170604 (2020)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.125.170604] to study the finite-temperature properties of this model and reveal its massless nature. The central charge as a function of the coupling constant is directly extracted in our calculations and compared with field theory predictions.

Abstract:We consider the O(N) linear {\sigma} model and introduce an auxiliary field to eliminate the scalar self-interaction. Using a suitable limiting process this model can be continuously transformed into the nonlinear version of the O(N) model. We demonstrate that, up to two-loop order in the CJT formalism, the effective potential of the model with auxiliary field is identical to the one of the standard O(N) linear {\sigma} model, if the auxiliary field is eliminated using the stationary values for the corresponding one- and two-point functions. We numerically compute the chiral condensate and the {\sigma}- and {\pi}-meson masses at nonzero temperature in the one-loop approximation of the CJT formalism. The order of the chiral phase transition depends sensitively on the choice of the renormalization scheme. In the linear version of the model and for explicitly broken chiral symmetry, it turns from crossover to first order as the mass of the {\sigma} particle increases. In the nonlinear case, the order of the phase transition turns out to be of first order. In the region where the parameter space of the model allows for physical solutions, Goldstone's theorem is always fulfilled.

Abstract:Motivated by the realization of SU(N) antiferromagnetism with the multirow representations in coldatom physics, we studied its low-energy nonlinear sigma model defined on the Grassmann manifold U(N)/U(m)U(N - m) using the complex projective presentation, which is a direct generalization of the widely studied CPN-1 model (corresponding to m = 1). Using the large-N expansion up to the first order of 1/N with fixed in, and in space dimension 2 < d < 4, we obtain the critical exponents, including in particular the gauge-independent exponents that are directly relevant for experimental measurements. These exponents are found to depend only on rn/N, indicating that a larger rn effectively reduces N and thus causes stronger fluctuations about the saddle point.

Abstract:We investigate the entanglement and Rényi entropies for the (1+1)-dimensional O(3) nonlinear sigma model using the tensor renormalization group method. The central charge is determined from the asymptotic scaling properties of both entropies. We also examine the consistency between the entanglement entropy and the $n$th-order Rényi entropy with $n\rightarrow 1$.

Abstract:We study the quantum phase transition of the (1+1)-dimensional O(3) nonlinear sigma model at finite density using the tensor renormalization group method. This model suffers from the sign problem, which has prevented us from investigating the properties of the phase transition. We investigate the properties of the phase transition by changing the chemical potential $\mu$ at a fixed coupling of $\beta$. We determine the transition point $\mu_{\rm c}$ and the critical exponent $\nu$ from the $\mu$ dependence of the number density in the thermodynamic limit. The dynamical critical exponent $z$ is also extracted from the scaling behavior of the temporal correlation length as a function of $\mu$.

Abstract:We find the novel class of the supersymmetric deformation of the $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$ $\sigma$-model and its equivalence with the generalised chiral Gross-Neveu. This construction allows the use of field-theoretic techniques and particularly the study of renormalisability and $\beta$-function. Provided approach is useful in finding conformal limits and establishes relation between chiral (GN) and sigma model description (geometric), which is explicitly demonstrated for the case of $ \mathbb{R} \times S^{1} $/Super-Thirring models. We also provide discussion on its emergence in $\mathcal{N}=2$ Liouville and 4-dim Chern-Simons theory.

Abstract:The study of the O(N) model at nonzero temperature is presented applying the auxiliary field method, which allows to obtain a continuous transformation between the linear and the nonlinear version of the model. In case of explicitly broken chiral symmetry the order of the chiral phase transition changes from crossover to first order as the vacuum mass of the $\sigma$ particle increases. In the chiral limit one observes a first order phase transition and the Goldstone's theorem is fulfilled.

Abstract:We study (1+1)-dimensional O(3) nonlinear sigma model using the tensor renormalization group method with the infinite limit of the bond dimension $D_{\rm cut}\rightarrow \infty$. At the vanishing chemical potential $\mu=0$, we investigate the von Neumann and Rényi types of entanglement entropies. The central charge is determined to be $c=1.97(9)$ by using the asymptotic scaling properties of the entropies. We also examine the consistency between two entropies. In the finite density region with $\mu\ne 0$, where this model suffers from the sign problem in the standard Monte Carlo approach, we investigate the properties of the quantum phase transition. We determine the transition point $\mu_{\rm c}$ and the critical exponent of the correlation length $\nu$ from the $\mu$ dependence of the number density in the thermodynamic limit. The dynamical critical exponent $z$ is also extracted from the scaling behavior of the temporal correlation length as a function of $\mu$. This is the first successful calculation of the dynamical critical exponent with the TRG method.

Abstract:In this paper we link the physics of topological nonlinear {\sigma} models with that of Chern-Simons insulators. We show that corresponding to every 2n-dimensional Chern-Simons insulator there is a (n-1)-dimensional topological nonlinear {\sigma} model with the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. Breaking internal symmetry in these nonlinear {\sigma} models leads to nonlinear {\sigma} models with the {\theta} term. [This is analogous to the dimension reduction leading from 2n-dimensional Chern-Simons insulators to (2n-1) and (2n-2)-dimensional topological insulators protected by discrete symmetries.] The correspondence described in this paper allows one to derive the topological term in a theory involving fermions and order parameters (we shall referred to them as "fermion-{\sigma} models") when the conventional gradient-expansion method fails. We also discuss the quantum number of solitons in topological nonlinear {\sigma} model and the electromagnetic action of the (2n-1)-dimensional topological insulators. Throughout the paper we use a simple model to illustrate how things work.

Abstract:We express the discrete 1+1-dimensional $O(3)$ non-linear sigma model (NL$\sigma$M) in a form well-suited for the continuous variable approach to quantum computing. Within the Schwinger boson formulation, we need two qumodes (quantum-mechanical oscillators) at each lattice site. We envision that it might be possible to reach the scaling regime of this model and observe asymptotic freedom on near-term photonic quantum devices in the coming decade.

Abstract:We investigate the critical behaviour at theta=pi of the two-dimensional O(3) nonlinear sigma model with topological term on the lattice. Our method is based on numerical simulations at imaginary values of theta, and on scaling transformations that allow a controlled analytic continuation to real values of theta. Our results are compatible with a second order phase transition, with the critical exponent of the SU(2)_1 Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model, for sufficiently small values of the coupling.

Equivalence of 1-loop RG flows in 4d Chern-Simons and integrable 2d sigma-models

Abstract:We argue for the matching of 1-loop divergences between 4d Chern-Simons theory with Disorder defects and the corresponding integrable 2d sigma-models of non-ultralocal type. Starting from the 4d path integral, we show under general assumptions that the 1-loop divergences localise to the 2d defects. They match the 'universal' formulae developed in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2209.05502" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2209.05502">arXiv:2209.05502</a>] for the 1-loop RG flows of integrable 2d sigma-models. Our argument uses an alternate path integral representation for the 1-loop effective action and the known classical equivalence between the 4d and 2d theories.
