Abstract:Energy barrier of oxygen molecule dissociation on carbon nanotube or graphene with different types of nitrogen doping is investigated using density functional theory. The results show that the energy barriers can be reduced efficiently by all types of nitrogen doping in both carbon nanotubes and graphene. Graphite-like nitrogen and Stone-Wales defect nitrogen decrease the energy barrier more efficiently than pyridine-like nitrogen, and a dissociation barrier lower than 0.2 eV can be obtained. Higher nitrogen concentration reduces the energy barrier much more efficiently for graphite-like nitrogen. These observations are closely related to partial occupation of {\pi}* orbitals and change of work functions. Our results thus provide useful insights into the oxygen reduction reactions.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes have attracted considerable interest for their unique electronic properties. They are fascinating candidates for fundamental studies of one dimensional materials as well as for future molecular electronics applications. The molecular orbitals of nanotubes are of particular importance as they govern the transport properties and the chemical reactivity of the system. Here we show for the first time a complete experimental investigation of molecular orbitals of single wall carbon nanotubes using atomically resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Local conductance measurements show spectacular carbon-carbon bond asymmetry at the Van Hove singularities for both semiconducting and metallic tubes, demonstrating the symmetry breaking of molecular orbitals in nanotubes. Whatever the tube, only two types of complementary orbitals are alternatively observed. An analytical tight-binding model describing the interference patterns of ? orbitals confirmed by ab initio calculations, perfectly reproduces the experimental results.

First Principles Studies of Nitrogen Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Dioxygen Reduction

Abstract:We performed first principles spin polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations to simulate the nitrogen substitutionally doped short (10, 0) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for dioxygen adsorption and reduction. Our calculated results show that nitrogen prefers to stay at the open-edge of the short CNTs. Dioxygen O2 can adsorb and partially reduce on the carbon−nitrogen complex site (Pauling site) and on carbon−carbon long bridge sites at the open-edge of the CNTs. The results of the spin polarization calculations show that the carbon atoms on the open-edge of the CNT can possess a magnetic moment of about 0.59 μB/atom, while those carbon atoms in the inner wall of the CNT do not have a magnetic moment. The doped nitrogen in the CNT does not have a magnetic moment. The chemisorption of dioxygen O2 on the open-edge of the short CNT reduces the magnetic moments of the carbon atoms to nearly zero.
The Effects of Oxygen Substitution on Electronic Structure of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:By use of the first-principles calculations, we investigate the characteristics of single-walled carbon nanotubes in which one carbon atom is substituted by one oxygen atom. We find that substitution of oxygen does not obviously alter the binding energy, and the global structure of the tube remains unchanged. Localized resonant states appear in the substitutional location, which may significantly affect the electronic and related properties of nanotubes, such as the conductance and electron emission properties. Our conclusions are consistent with previous experimental results.

Abstract:We perform first principles calculations on work functions of single wall carbon nanotubes, which can be divided into two classes according to tube diameter (D). For class I tubes (D > 1 nm), work functions lie within a narrow distribution (approximately 0.1 eV) and show no significant chirality or diameter dependence. For class II tubes (D < 1 nm), work functions show substantial changes, with armchair tubes decreasing monotonically with diameter, while zigzag tubes show the opposite trend. Surface dipoles and hybridization effects are shown to be responsible for the observed work function change.

Abstract:Having access to the chemical environment at the atomic level of a dopant in a nanostructure is crucial for the understanding of its properties. We have performed atomically resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy to detect individual nitrogen dopants in single-walled carbon nanotubes and compared with first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that nitrogen doping occurs as single atoms in different bonding configurations: graphitic-like and pyrrolic-like substitutional nitrogen neighboring local lattice distortion such as Stone-Thrower-Wales defects. We also show that the largest fraction of nitrogen amount is found in poly aromatic species that are adsorbed on the surface of the nanotube walls. The stability under the electron beam of these nanotubes has been studied in two different cases of nitrogen incorporation content and configuration. These findings provide key information for the applications of these nanostructures.

Abstract:Detailed studies of mechanisms for hydrogen dissociative adsorption and diffusion on pure and nitrogen-doped (8, 0) carbon nanotubes are carried out using the first-principles density functional theory method. (1) For pure carbon nanotubes, we have identified the energetically most favorable dissociative pathway for hydrogen adsorption, with a barrier height of $1.3\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$. We also found that the adsorbed hydrogen atoms can act as an autocatalyst for further dissociative adsorption of hydrogen molecules. (2) It is found that on pure carbon nanotubes the diffusion of hydrogen atoms is constrained by interaction with neighboring adsorbed hydrogen atoms. The diffusion barrier is around $0.7\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ for an isolated hydrogen atom, but becomes substantially higher at around $1.4\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ in the presence of adsorbed hydrogen in neighboring positions. (3) Doping the nanotube with nitrogen considerably alters the catalytic effects of the carbon nanotube for hydrogen dissociative adsorption. The dissociative adsorption of hydrogen on the carbon nanotube is greatly enhanced, with the barrier substantially reduced to ca. $0.9\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$. The differences in the barrier heights are explained through analysis of the electronic structure changes of the nanotube.
Structural Stability and O-2 Dissociation on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene with Transition Metal Atoms Embedded: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:By using first-principles calculations, we investigate the structural stability of nitrogen-doped (N-doped) graphene with graphitic-N, pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N, and the transition metal (TM) atoms embedded into N-doped graphene. The structures and energetics of TM atoms from Sc to Ni embedded into N-doped graphene are studied. The TM atoms at N4V 2 forming a 4N-centered structure shows the strongest binding and the binding energies are more than 7 eV. Finally, we investigate the catalytic performance of N-doped graphene with and without TM embedding for O2 dissociation, which is a fundamental reaction in fuel cells. Compared to the pyridinic-N, the graphitic-N is more favorable to dissociate O2 molecules with a relatively low reaction barrier of 1.15 eV. However, the catalytic performance on pyridinic-N doped structure can be greatly improved by embedding TM atoms, and the energy barrier can be reduced to 0.61 eV with V atom embedded. Our results provide the stable structure of N-doped graphene and its potential applications in the oxygen reduction reactions.

Abstract:Based on first principles density functional theory calculations we explored energetics of oxygen reduction reaction over pristine and nitrogen-doped graphene with different amounts of nitrogen doping. The process of oxygen reduction requires one more step than the same reaction catalyzed by metals. Results of calculations evidence that for the case of light doped graphene (about 4% of nitrogen) the energy barrier for each step is lower than for the same process on a Pt surface. In contrast to the catalysis on a metal surface the maximal coverage of doped graphene is lower and depends on the corrugation of graphene. Changes of the energy barriers caused by oxygen load and corrugation are also discussed.

Abstract:Oxygen and nitrogen adsorption in single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is studied by density function and discrete variational (DFT-DVM) method.The models of O 2 and N 2 adsorption in the SWCNT are optimized based on the energy minimization.The calculated results of density of state,populations and energy gaps of the molecular orbitals show that oxygen adsorption in SWCNT increases the carbon nanotube`s electrical conductivity more notably than nitrogen adsorption,which is consistent with the experiment.

Abstract:We apply first principles calculations to study the opening of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT's) by oxidation. We show that an oxygen rim can stabilize the edge of the open tube. The sublimation of CO$_2$ molecules from the rim with the subsequent closing of the tube changes from endothermic to exothermic as the tube radius increases, within the range of experimental feasible radii. We also obtain the energies for opening the tube at the cap and at the wall, the latter being significantly less favorable.

Abstract:The effects of nitrogenation on single-walled carbon nanotubes are investigated within the ab initio density functional theory. Four different types of nitrogenation have been considered: (i) direct substitution of nitrogen atoms, (ii) substitution with a formation of vacancy (pyridinelike doping), (iii) exohedral chemisorption of N adatoms, and (iv) sidewall covalent -NH2 functionalization. Structural deformations, electronic band structures, density of states, and ionization potential energies are calculated and compared among the different types of nitrogenated nanotubes. Magnetism is observed for chemisorbed single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with magnetic moment of 0.7 mu(B). In addition, the relaxed structures of SWNTs with two neighboring chemisorbed N adatoms are generally more complex than those of singly chemisorbed N adatom. The barrier energies needed to coalesce two N adatoms chemisorbed on SWNTs to form a free N-2 molecule are higher than those for a graphene sheet.
First-principles study on electronic structure and bonding characteristics of carbon nanotubes

Abstract:In this paper, electronic structures of a series of dimension-variational single-walled carbon nanotubes are investigated by use of the first-principles calculations. The density of states and the variation of density of states with the tubular radius R obtained are in good agreement with the experimental results. The value of density of states at the Fermi level is reduced with increasing tubular radius R, which shows the chemical reactivity of carbon nanotubes is strengthened. The bonding between C-C in nanotubes is distorted σ and π bonds consisting of 2s, 2p valence electrons. As the tubular radius R increases, the curvature of the chemical bonds is reduced, the bonding between C-C and binding energy are increased, electronic density and the corresponding potential field are reduced. The above results show the nanotubes with small size have advantage in the syntheses of nanometer-scale composites.

Abstract:Finite nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) with and without adsorbed O(2) were systematically investigated using the B3LYP/6-31G* method. NCNTs with 10 different lengths and 9 different diameters were considered. The charge carried by the N atom and its circumjacent C atoms, the HOMO-LUMO gap, the O(2) binding energy and the C-O bond length oscillate periodically as the tube length increases, whereas these values show a monotonic increase or decrease as the tube diameter is enlarged. All of the adsorbed oxygen investigated here is activated. Enlarging the tube diameter has a complicated influence on the catalytic ability of the NCNT. First, O(2) adsorption becomes increasingly difficult on the surface of the NCNT, and the reactivity of the O(a) atom becomes lower and lower as the tube diameter is enlarged, which reduces the reactivity of the NCNT. Second, enlarging the tube diameter creates more active centers for the adsorption and activation of oxygen, which will increase the reactivity of the NCNT.
O2 Dissociation on the Side Wall of Aluminum Nitride Nanotube: a DFT Investigation

Abstract:The probabilities of the singlet and triplet O-2 dissociation on single-walled aluminum nitride nanotube (AlNNT) were explored here. The results suggest that the dissociation of singlet and triplet O-2 on AlNNT go through intermediates on their pathways. Triplet O-2 was found to be difficult to dissociate on (8, 0) AlNNT following the triplet dissociation pathways due to the high overall dissociation barriers that are greater than 1.48 eV. The singlet O-2 can dissociate on the nanotube following the singlet dissociation pathways with a lower dissociation barrier of 0.74 eV. The effect of temperature was also considered and the results at room temperature indicated the unfavorable triplet dissociation barriers remained higher than 1.35 eV. In contrast, a higher temperature helps facilitate the singlet pathway dissociation barrier to be decreased to 0.65 eV at 298.15K. However, the overall dissociation of the triplet O-2 on (8, 0) AlNNT decreases to 0.95 eV at 0 K and 0.86 eV at 298.15 K due to the spin-orbital coupling. With the decreasing of the overall dissociation barriers with increasing diameter of the nanotube, it can be further addressed that both singlet and triplet O-2 can dissociate on AlNNT but more strict condition is needed for triplet O-2 dissociation such as AlNNT with large diameter or high temperature. Moreover, the electronic structure of AlNNT would be modified and its conductivity increases when interacting with O-2. The results presented here will be a guide for application of AlNNT in nanodevices such as detecting O-2 and spintronics applications. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
First-principles Study of the Adsorption of Oxygen Atoms on Copper Nanowires

Abstract:By using first-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the structural stability and electronic properties of a single oxygen atom adsorbed on the surface of foursquare Cu nanowires for a wide range of adsorption sites. In view of binding energy maximization, we found that the long bridge site at the edge of the Cu nanowires is the most stable site for oxygen adsorption, which is always slightly energetically favorable compared with the hollow site at the surface. The electron transferring from Cu atoms to O adatom and a significant polarization indicate the O—Cu chemical bond, showing some degree of ionic character. In addition, the hybridization between O-2p and Cu-3d states implies the O—Cu bond which also shows some degree of covalence character. The main factors which affect the oxygen preferred adsorption site are analyzed from the local geometrical configurations and electronic properties.
Unexpected Spontaneously Dynamic Oxygen Migration on Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Using the density functional theory calculations, we show that the oxygen functional groups exhibit unexpected spontaneously dynamic behaviors on the interior surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). Two types of dynamic oxygen migrations - hydroxyl and epoxy migrations - are achieved by the breaking/reforming of C-O bond reaction and the proton transfer reaction. It is demonstrated that the spontaneously dynamic characteristic is attributed to the sharply reduced energy barrier less than or comparable to thermal fluctuations. We also observe a stable intermediate state with a dangling C-O bond, which permits the successive migration of oxygen functional groups. However, on the exterior surface of SWCNT, the oxygen groups are difficult to migrate spontaneously due to the relatively high energy barriers, and the dangling C-O bond prefers to transform into the more stable epoxy configuration. The spontaneous oxygen migration is further confirmed by the long-distance oxygen migration, which comprises three hydroxyl migration reactions and one C-O bond reaction. Our work provides a new understanding of the behavior of oxygen functional groups on interfaces and gives a potential route to design new carbon-based dynamic materials.

Abstract:Based on density functional theory, the geometrical and electronic structures of oxygen-functionalized single-wall carbon nanotubes (O-SWCNs) are obtained, of which the vibrational properties are calculated in terms of lattice dynamics theory. Both bond expansion and contraction are found to coexist in O-SWCNs. A distinct Raman shift is observed in the radial breathing mode (RBM) and the G modes, depending not only on the tube diameter and chirality but also on oxygen coverage and adsorption configurations. With the oxygen coverage increasing, interestingly, a nonmonotonic upshift and downshift is observed in the G modes, which is attributed to the competition between the bond expansion and contraction. In addition, the resonance Raman effect at different oxygen coverage, which may be observable in O-SWCNs, is discussed.
