Abstract:The resistivities of metal nanocrystalline materials exhibit significant size effect due to the additional scattering sites provided by grain boundaries compared to bulk materials. In this work, the authors investigate the electron ballistic transport in nanocrystalline materials under an applied electric field using the transfer-matrix approach. The theoretical results show that the resistivity increases remarkably due to the quantum effect for the grain size lower than the characteristic parameters such as the electron mean free path, and the predications are in excellent agreement with experimental data. The resistivity is also dependent on the external electric field when the grain size is at several nanometer scale.
Effect of A Magnetic Field on the Preparation of Silver Nanowires Using Solid Electrolyte Thin Films

Abstract:The effect of an external magnetic field on the preparation of silver nanowires was studied. The silver nanowires were synthesized using solid electrolyte RbAg4I5 thin films by applying both a direct current (DC) electric field and a magnetic field. The RbAg4I5 thin films, which were prepared by deposition at room temperature and atmospheric pressure on a NaCl substrate, were used for the transfer of Ag+ ions between two Ag electrodes during the preparation process. When only the DC electric field is applied, the silver ions migrate toward the cathode. On the edge of the silver film at the cathode the Ag+ ions congregate to form aligned nanowires. If the magnetic field is also applied perpendicular to the DC electric field, the morphology of the nanowires can be controlled by rotating the sample in the magnetic field. Experimental results show that the growth of the silver nanowires is determined by the Ag+ ionic flux.

Abstract:Silver sulfide nanocrystals were successfully prepared by γ-irradiation in water and ethanol systems, respectively, at an ambient pressure and room temperature. Sodium thiosulfate, thiourea and carbon disulfide were employed as the sulfur ion source. The products were characterized by some means including X-ray powder diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and X-ray photoelectron energy spectrum(XPS). The result of the experiments indicated that the kind of the solvent and the sulfur ion source had influence on the size of silver sulfide nanoparticles. An interesting phenomenon was found in the TEM image of sample II : several long rods existed in the product and a tubular structure could be seen in one of these rods. The formation of this kind of special structure could be relevant to the coordination between thiourea and silver in water system.

Abstract:Designed experiments are carried out to systematically study the effects of silver ions on morphology and yield of gold nanorods synthesized via a seed-mediated method. Gold nanorods synthesized with different silver ions and CTAB concentrations were characterized by absorption spectroscopy and TEM. The shape and yield of gold nanorods were effectively controlled by adjusting the concentration ratio of CTAB and silver ions for synthesis. Dark field images of a glass slide sample with gold nanorods deposit and a sample with gold nanrods staining cells further confirmed that high quality gold nanorods were obtained.

Abstract:By means of SEM, the micro-morphology of silver particles separated from borosilicate glass by the heat-treatment with an electric field is investigated. The distribution of the silver particles appears clusters. This result is explained by an energy viewpoint. Based on hermodynamics theory of phase separation, the calculation of the free energy change during the heat-treatment in an electric field is performed by means of the Ansoft Maxwell software. The results of this calculation analysis are found to be very close to the experimental data.

Abstract:This paper reports a practical approach of in stiu preparation of silver nanoroing by electron beam-induced method.Ag-TiO2 gel film was prepared by the sol-gel process combined with dip-lift method,followed by heat treatment to form solid film.By using the electron beam as radiate source and control the time of radiation,the formation process of silver nanoring was observed on the surface of Ag/TiO2 film.The silver nanoring had an inner diameter of 100~280 nm and outer diameter of 120~300 nm.

Abstract:We report the effect of femtosecond laser irradiation conditions on precipitation of silver nanoparticles in Silicate glasses. Absorption spectra show that the intensity of the absorption peak due to the surface plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles increases with increase of the light intensity of the laser beam, beam diameter in the focal plane, Rayleigh length of the focusing lens and shot number of the laser pulse. The position of the surface plasmon resonance peak remains constant regardless of the variation of the irradiation conditions. The influences of laser irradiation conditions on the size and spatial distribution of silver nanoparticles are discussed.

Abstract:The synthesis of Ag nanoparticles from AgNO3 in acrylamide (AM) isopropyl alcohol solution has been achieved at room temperature by using an γ-irradiation reductive synthetic route in the field of a 2.22×1015Bq 60Co γ-ray source at the dose rate of 50Gy/min for 3–6h. The initial concentration of AM, which could be polymerized as polyacrylamide (PAM) in irradiation field, played an important role in the morphologies of the Ag particles in solution. The Ag fractals were only obtained from the Ag clusters and particles in a dilute AM solution. These faceted Ag particles aggregate to from preferentially oriented Ag crystals with dispersed fractal morphologies, which could be ascribed to diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) model on the amorphous carbon-coated copper grid. The fractal dimension of the Ag crystallites is between 1.70 and 1.75, which is close to that in DLA model simulation (1.70).

Abstract:The Ag-exchanged commercial soda-lime silicate glasses were treated by three methods: thermal annealing, UV-laser irradiation, and X-ray irradiation, in order to promote the silver nanoclusters formation. Absorption spectrometry and electron spin resonance measurement results indicated that the silver ions transferred to silver atoms after the above three treatments. The silver atoms diffused and then aggregated to become nanoclusters after thermal annealing in air, or after UV-laser irradiation. However, X-ray irradiation, which induced defects and reduction of Ag0 atoms, would not promote the silver nanocluster formation. After annealing at 600°C for 45h, the spherical nanoclusters with a diameter of 3–8nm were formed. The nanoclusters with a diameter of about 2nm were formed after 30min UV-laser irradiation without subsequent heating. The surface plasmon resonance peak position of silver nanoclusters changed from 411nm after thermal annealing to 425nm after UV-laser irradiation. The peak position shift was due to the nanoclusters size difference.

Abstract:Silver nanocluster formation and dissolution was observed in a soda-lime silicate glass with 0.02wt% of silver after X-ray irradiation followed by annealing. Absorption spectrometry and electron spin resonance measurement results indicated that the silver ions transferred to silver atoms after irradiation. The silver atoms diffused and then aggregated to become nanoclusters after annealing at high temperatures (such as >300°C). The nanoclusters grew during the first 15min at 420°C, and then slowly dissolved over a longer period. The mean nanocluster size estimated based on Mie theory was ∼4nm at 420°C for 1h, decreasing to ∼2nm after heating for 48h. The induced defects trapped electrons from silver nanoclusters, and the dissolution of silver nanoclusters to form silver ions results in a net loss in the system energy. The nanoclusters dissolved completely at 560°C for 1h.

Abstract:The γ-irradiation method was used successfully to prepare nanocrystalline ZnS in sphalerite structure at room temperature. Sodium thiosulfate, thiourea and mercaptoethanol were used as sulfur sources. The products obtained from irradiated solutions containing zinc ions and different sulfur sources are all sphalerite phase. The TEM images indicate that the product from mercaptoethanol is in best dispersion, and that from sodium thiosulfate aggregates most heavily. The possible mechanisms of the formation of zinc sulfide in different systems are proposed.

Abstract:By means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the phase separation progress of boracic silicate glass doped with silver upon application of an electric field heat treatment is investigated. The experiment results show that externally applied electric field promotes the phase separation of the glass and influences the size of the droplet phase. We propose a new model based on the static electromagnetics theory and the thermodynamic theory to explain these phenomena.

Abstract:A technique of liquid–solid arc discharge combined with hydrothermal treatment in the presence of surfactant has been successfully developed to prepare nanocrystalline noble metallic Ag with an average particle size of about 10 nm. The products were characterized by adsorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and microscope photodensitometer measurements. The influence of preparation conditions on the size of Ag particles was investigated. The appearance of Ag nanowires in the process was observed.

Abstract:In this letter, we report precipitation of nanometer scale Zn crystalline particles in Zn borosilicate glass induced by 100 keV electron irradiation. Nanometer Zn crystalline particles precipitate rapidly in the glass under high intensity electron irradiation. A double ionization mechanism is proposed in interpretation of the formation of Zn particles. Thermal effects are less important than ionization interactions. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:Granular, needle-, rod-, or whisker-shaped γ-Fe2O3 nanocrystals have been prepared via controlling the chemical microenvironment of the reaction system under γ-irradiation. A novel extension-curl-effect model was proposed to explain the effect of the chemical microenvironment on the morphology of γ-Fe2O3 nanocrystals. The as-prepared γ-Fe2O3 nanocrystals were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Their magnetic properties were also studied by zero-field Mössbauer spectroscopy, which indicated that different shaped γ-Fe2O3 nanocrystals could exhibit interesting magnetic behavior.

Abstract:Island silver films (nanoclusters, quantum dots) embedded in silica are prepared on silicon wafers and glasses by sputtering. Atomic force microscope is used to characterize the morphology and distribution of silver nanoclusters, the size of nanoclusters varies from several ten to several hundred nanometers. Linear optical absorption spectra of annealed samples have a blue-shift compare to that of as- prepared samples, it suggests thermal treatment decomposes large clusters to small clusters. Z-scan technique is applied to study the third-order non-linear optical properties. It is found that the embedded silver nanoclusters present remarkable third order nonlinear effect even if the size of silver nanoclusters are as large as several tens to several hundreds nanometers. Thermal treatment leads to a slight reduction in NRIC, indicating annealing also dissolve tiny nanoclusters. The size distribution of silver nanoclusters therefore becomes centralized after thermal treatment.

Abstract:In our work, a simple and fast synthesis method is provided to synthesize silver nanoclusters (AgNCs). In this method, with using polyacrylic acid (PAA) as a template, the silver ions were reduced to silver nanoclusters by irradiation reduction at room temperature. The prepared silver nanoclusters (PAA–AgNCs) with average particle size of 1.98 ± 0.79 nm have a fluorescence property, and their physical and chemical properties can be controlled by absorbed dose, PAA/Ag + mole ratio and other factors. The fluorescence stability of the PAA–AgNCs is good, and it is unique in that the fluorescence emission of the s PAA–AgNCs depends on the excitation wavelength. In addition, based on the fluorescence quenching phenomenon of PAA–AgNCs in the presence of Cr 3+ ion, we established a simple and efficient method for the detection of Cr 3+ ion by using PAA–AgNCs as fluorescent probes.
