Abstract:The regularity for the 3-D nematic liquid crystal equations is considered in this paper, it is proved that the Leray–Hopf weak solutions (u, d) is in fact smooth, if the velocity field $$u\in L^\infty (0,T;L^{3,\infty }_x(\mathbb {R}^3))$$ satisfies some addition local small condition $$\begin{aligned} r^{-3}\left| \left\{ x\in B_r(x_0): |u(x,t_0)|>\varepsilon r^{-1}\right\} \right| \le \varepsilon , \end{aligned}$$ which is inspired by the papers [2, 35].

More precisely, we show that the Serrin-type conditions imposed only on one component of the velocity and vertical derivative component of orientation field in Lebesgue spaces or Lorentz spaces, i.e., or with , implies the regularity of the Leray weak solutions. These results are immediate consequences of new local regularity criteria in term of suitable weak solutions.

Abstract:We consider a full Navier-Stokes and $Q$-tensor system for incompressible liquid crystal flows of nematic type. In the two dimensional periodic case, we prove the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions that are uniformly bounded in time. This result is obtained without any smallness assumption on the physical parameter $\xi$ that measures the ratio between tumbling and aligning effects of a shear flow exerting over the liquid crystal directors. Moreover, we show the uniqueness of asymptotic limit for each global strong solution as time goes to infinity and provide an uniform estimate on the convergence rate.

Abstract:A lattice Boltzmann scheme is presented which recovers the dynamics of nematic and chiral liquid crystals; the method essentially gives solutions to the Qian-Sheng equations for the evolution of the velocity and tensor order-parameter fields. The resulting algorithm is able to include five independent Leslie viscosities, a Landau-deGennes free energy which introduces three or more elastic constants, a temperature dependent order parameter, surface anchoring and viscosity coefficients, flexo-electric and order electricity and chirality. When combined with a solver for the Maxwell equations associated with the electric field, the algorithm is able to provide a full 'device solver' for a liquid crystal display. Coupled lattice Boltzmann schemes are used to capture the evolution of the fast momentum and slow director motions in a computationally efficient way. The method is shown to give results in close agreement with analytical results for a number of validating examples. The use of the method is illustrated through the simulation of the motion of defects in a zenithal bistable liquid crystal device.

Meanwhile, the new logarithmically improved regularity criterion for the 3D Navier-Stokes equation in terms of the pressure π \pi and gradient of velocity ∇ u \nabla u can also be established. Especially, we explore a new logarithmically improved Serrin’s criterion for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, which improves the results of Lei and Zhou [Commn. Pure Appl. Anal. 12 (2013), pp. 2715–2719].
