Abstract:In view of the present situation of the university students' living-area,whose scale rapidly expanding,function continously strengthened and the connotation unceasingly enriched.The author conducted an analysis on the following aspects: the relationship between living and education,the construction,basic elements and functions of living-area.Citing the new campus planning of Nantong University as an example,this work put forward four method: web-connecting paths,multi-(level)dimensions of living-area,setting empty-areas and creating occasions,aimed at solving the core problem of how to embody the concept of modern education and establish good education environment.

Abstract:With the rapid development of Chinese universities and colleges in the past few years, there has been a significant increase in the population of enrolled students accompanied by a big expansion of campus area. These changes have influenced and are influencing the campus residential environment and lifestyles. As a result, the issue of their relationships should call for more attention. Due to the differences in personal values and campus lifestyles, students′ demands on the residential environment show diversity. In the case study of Hangzhou City, China, viewpoints concerning personal attributes, residential preferences and campus conditions to represent the residential lifestyles on campus were introduced and analyzed. Six university campuses were selected as survey objectives in order to comprehensively demonstrate campus environment conditions in the city. Four patterns of campus residential lifestyle were classified by residential preferences; and their characteristics were compared through subjective evaluation and objective conditions. The results of this research provide the basic data for future work in the improvement of the Chinese campus environment. Furthermore, the methodology of characterizing residential lifestyles may bring about a new useful perspective for further research on the evaluation of residential environment.

Abstract:With the vigorous promotion of national policies and funds, green campus construction is booming in Chinese universities. It's in great need to develop an evaluation system, as a long-term mechanism, to assess and compare the sustainability performance in different Chinese universities, and to guide the green campus revolution in Chinese universities. Aiming at the characteristics of green campus evolution in China, a campus sustainability evaluation system is developed, that contains five categories of Organization & Management (C1), Energy & Resource Saving (C2), Friendly Environment (C3), Campus Culture (C4), and Social Outreach (C5). The indicators include mandatory indicators, all of which must be met in order to pass the evaluation, and optional indicators, which take the form of scoring. The scores of all optional indicators should be accumulated to get the final score. The achievements and shortcomings of sustainable campus development in a pilot Chinese university were revealed by this system as a case study, and the results indicate more attention should be paid on C1, C2, C4, and hence detailed suggestions were put forward. Discussions are made in terms of the potential contribution and the limitation of this evaluation system, and the capacity building needed to generalize the evaluation in China.

Abstract:Nowadays, with rapid process of urbanization, sustainable construction has become the global trend in the area of city development. Meanwhile, university campus is a place that integrates education, living, communication and other functions, the satisfaction of which will surely have significant impact on students’ potential and their health both physically and mentally. In view of this, this paper built up the comprehensive evaluation indicator system from the perspective of safety, health, convenience, comfort and sustainability and performed satisfaction evaluation on campus environment, taking the five campuses of Zhejiang University for example. Finally this paper put forward suggestions on sustainable construction and improvement of campus environment.

Abstract:This paper analyzed the University of Calgary's (US's) sustainable campus construction by analyzing its openness and integration into the neighborhood.Based on the above analysis, the paper pointed out UC's strategies of building a sustainable campus.Those strategies and methods are listed as follows: the concept of being an open neighborhood, the layout of compact growth, the campus traffic in harmony with city roads, the passenger-first campus road structure, and the humanistic intercourse space in campus.The systematization and hierarchy of these designs or construction strategies have contributed to the generation and development of high quality green campus space, deserving to be a reference for the development of green college campus in China.

Abstract:Through analysis of college campus layout at home and abroad based on space classiifcation, this paper summarized the functions and distribution characteristics of the various types of campus land, and summed up the circle-layer-multifunction-groups mode for the modern campus in our country. Based on the calculation of geographical information entropy, equilibrium degree and dominance degree of the samples, this research made a comparison study of the land use structure between domestic and foreign universities. Combines with the analysis of the campus evolution and layout characteristics, this study held the view that openness, regeneration patterns and campus locations are core reasons for the land-use differences.

Abstract:Despite the scarcity of city space and the transformation and disappearance of many work-units, campuses with enclosed and gated system remained its robust and sustainable development in urban Beijing. Hence, it is essential to trace back to their spatial strategy of maintaining its self-governance as well as benefiting from the new development of the city in a market economy. This study firstly applies a regression model to reveal the key spatial traits that influence the daily balanced use of campus space. Furthermore, the spatial interaction with the adjacent urban areas has also been analyzed. Lastly, an in-depth institutional interpretation of its self-governance (vertically independent governance with the state) as well as its enclosure and gating system (horizontally independent governance with the city) is also combined. Major conclusions are drawn. (1) Land use mix is determinant in the balanced use of campus space, while physical enclosure and gating further enhances this stability. (2) Campuses in Beijing relief their high-density burden through flexibly interacting with the adjacent urban areas, owing to its proximity to TOD nodes. We confirm that both the support from the state and local strategy of innovation industry and highly dense population inside the campus constitute the new driving forces to maintain the collective social and functional mix within the enclosed campuses in Beijing. This study contributes additional empirical evidences of spatial use strategy embedded in Chinese specific socio-cultural context to the stream of urban theories.

Abstract:It was highlighted that image,brand,honor and quality of a university was closely related to its landscape environment,therefore,high-quality campus landscapes are necessary for all universities,and characteristics of campus landscapes should be understood first to create a modern campus with favorable ecological conditions,beautiful scenery,vitality and cultural aura.On this basis,characteristics of campus landscapes were further studied,and it was pointed out that campus landscapes was actually an organic growth process;a material carrier of humanistic spirits of the university showing its spiritual horizons and features,creating a favorable environment for students,and also playing the role of moral education;and a kind of special green spaces with comprehensive social functions,which could integrate into the overall environment of the city with its multiple attributes,scales and functions,while its communication spaces were parts of the urban recreational and communication spaces,thus management of campus landscapes tended to the socialization.Through analyzing and elaborating natural features of campus landscapes,this study aimed at promoting and providing references for the construction of modern campus landscapes.

Abstract:This paper examines the architectural and landscape design strategies and intentions for green, open spaces facilities targeting stress alleviation for learning environments such as those of university campuses in a compact urban setting. Literature reviews provide three prevailing perspectives for physical design pedagogical operatives: healing gardens where greenery and plants produce restorative effects; flexible spaces that accommodate functional needs of different activities; and green buildings that incorporate open space as a catalyst for integrated eco-system. Corresponding design approaches (landscape design, spatial design and green design) are scrutinized by case study. A comparison of two university campuses with different urban contexts is conducted to identify challenges and opportunities for applying these design approaches. For a compact campus, high-dense surroundings may limit the size of an open space and may handicap circulation and accessibility; on the other side, a small open space may provide its users more intimate contact with natural restorative elements and also a more controllable microclimate for physical comfort. A healthy campus should encompass diverse open spaces to satisfy different purposes. Finally, a framework that integrates the three approaches is combined to produce a sustainable design rubric.

Abstract:The higher education is experiencing a rapid development in China, with the sharp increase of energy use and the low level of campus facility operation. Meanwhile, with the responsibility for knowledge transformation, sci-tech talents cultivation and technical innovation, universities are of great importance in the development of the sustainable society. The initiative of green campus has attracted great attention from both the society and the universities themselves. Therefore, it is very meaningful to get a full understanding of the current status of green campus development in China, and make the feasibility planning for the next step on this base. In this paper, the progress of green campus development in China is summarized, including all the initiatives to conduct the energy and resource efficient campus, and the current status of upgrading the energy and resource efficient campus to the green campus; the problems occurred during the development are analyzed, and the possible approaches and the action plan are explored accordingly, to promote the green campus development. It is found from the analysis that the development of energy and resource efficient campus has been expanded in a large scale in China, mainly aiming at the energy efficient technology application and campus energy management, and all these initiatives are strongly promoted by the national government with policy support and financial funding. With these great endeavors, an upgrade from the energy and resource efficient campus to the green campus is on progress, which expands its scope to sustainable education and the initiative of low-carbon life on campus. However, many problems also occurred during the progress, such as the lack of a good top-level design among different national ministries and the collaborative innovation among different departments in the university, and the need of a practical propulsion mode and a long-term mechanism to guarantee green campus development. Hence, some suggestions are made in terms of the administrative management, propulsion approach, evaluation standard, and action plan.
