Abstract:The ultrasonic excitation and propagation in an acoustic superlattice made of a LiNbO3 crystal is studied. Some interesting phenomena are predicted theoretically. The resonance is determined by the periodicity of the acoustic superlattice (ASL). The acoustic power emitted by the ASL into the transmission medium is directly proportional to N2 (N is the number of domains of the ASL). In view of these two features, the ASL may have potential applications in acoustic devices operating at frequencies of several hundred megahertz to several gigahertz. Another interesting phenomenon is the existence of a satellitelike resonance, whose frequency is related to the total thickness of the ASL. Using the ASL, resonators and transducers have been fabricated with operating frequencies in the range of 500–1000 MHz. Satellitelike resonances have been observed. Transducers with a very low insertion loss at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been fabricated. The experiments basically confirm the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Using an acoustic supedattice LiNbO3 crystal, we fabricated a prototype of acoustooptic device. Under the normal incidence, both the positive and negative first diffraction order appear. When the incidence angle equals the Bragg angle, only one of the first diffraction order remains. This can be explained by the interaction length.

Abstract:The relationship between the resonance frequency and the periodicity of the acoustic superlattice of LiNbO3 crystals has been obtained by analysis of the excitation and propagation of elastic waves in this kind of material with which high‐frequency resonance in the range of 500–800 MHz has been realized experimentally. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical ones. The applications of acoustic devices operating at frequencies high above 500 MHz are to be expected.

Abstract:An acoustic superlattice LiNbO3 crystal with periodic ferroelectric domain structure was fabricated by introducing a periodic electric current through the solid–liquid interface during the crystal growing process. The domain morphology of an as-grown crystal was observed with a scanning electron microscope, and was found to be of good periodicity. A light diffraction experiment indicated that there was a periodic fluctuation of the dielectric constant along the crystal’s growing direction. Using the “crossed field” scheme, a 340 MHz ultrasonic was excited in the crystal, which means that the acoustic superlattice is suitable for constructing high-frequency bulk-wave acoustic devices.

Abstract:By using growth striation technique, an acoustic superlattice of barium sodium niobate crystals, the single crystals with the periodic laminar ferroelectric domain structures, has been prepared. High-frequency resonance in the range of 200–400 MHz in such materials has been realized experimentally. The experimental results indicate that the application of acoustic devices with low acoustic loss operating at high frequencies is expected.

Abstract:Non-Hermiticity, usually represented in the context of gain and loss, gives rise to many exotic topological phenomena and offers more opportunities to steering topological functions. In modern acoustics, it has been widely perceived that the topological mode will be altered if topological phase changes. Our work shows otherwise in non-Hermitian acoustic crystals. We experimentally demonstrate an acoustic quadrupole topological insulator, whose topological corner, edge, and bulk modes could be arbitrarily engineered at any desired positions with its topological phase maintained. These non-Hermiticity-controlled topological modes bestow a bulk structure with unique features beyond the classical bulky state, offering a reconfigurable and versatile approach to manipulating topological phenomena. This non-Hermitian scheme can be readily generalized to other topological systems in various dimensions, such as the three-dimensional photonic/phononic lattices, which offer advanced and externally controllable recipes for manipulating topological phenomena.

Abstract:In this report, Y-doped acoustic superlattice (ASL) lithium niobate (LN) crystal with linear taper of period was grown by the Czochralski method. The ferroelectric domain structure was revealed by optical photomicrograph. When an alternating electric field of frequency ranging from 680 MHz to 1100 MHz was applied, a ultrasonic wave with the same frequency was excited implying that a high-frequency bulk wave device with broad bandwidth could be fabricated.

Abstract:LiNbO3 has been found attractive for lateral field excitation (LFE) applications due to its high piezoelectric coupling. In this paper, bulk acoustic wave propagation properties for LiNbO3 single crystal excited by a lateral electirc field have been investigated using the extended Christoffel-Bechmann method. It is found that the LFE piezoelectric coupling factor of c mode reaches its maximum value of 95.46% when psi - 0 degrees for both (yxl)-58 degrees and (yxwl)+/- 60 degrees/58 degrees LiNbO3. The acoustic wave phase velocity of c mode TSM (thickness shear mode) changes from 3456 m/s to 3983 m/s as a function of psi. Here psi represents the angle between the lateral electric field and the crystallographic X-axis in the substrate major surface. A 5 MHz LFE device of (yxl)-58 degrees LiNbO3 with psi = 0 degrees was designed and tested in air. A major resonance peak was observed with the motional resistance as low as 17 Omega and the Q-factor value up to 10353. The test result is well in agreement with the theoretical analysis, and suggests that the LFE LiNbO3 device can be a good platform for high performance resonator or sensor applications.

Abstract:One approach to extend the acoustic applications of aluminum nitride (AlN) in the GHz frequency range is to take advantage of the piezoelectric performance and high acoustic velocity (∼11 350 m/s) along the c-axis of this material. In particular, in the case of high-frequency micro-electromechanical systems, it should be possible to simplify the construction of resonators by using a-plane AlN-based structures. In the work described in this Letter, a single-crystalline a-plane AlN layer on an r-plane sapphire substrate is obtained by combining sputtering and high-temperature annealing. Based on this non-polar AlN, a resonator with only planar interdigital transducer electrodes is fabricated. Experiments on this resonator reveal simultaneous excitation of an anisotropic Rayleigh surface acoustic wave (SAW) at 2.38 GHz and a laterally excited bulk acoustic wave (LBAW) at 4.00 GHz. It is found that the Rayleigh SAW exhibits outstanding performance, with a quality factor as high as 2458 and great stability under variations in temperature. The LBAW at 4.00 GHz is excited by pure planar interdigitated electrodes without the need for any cavity or bottom electrode structure, thus demonstrating a promising approach to the construction of high-frequency resonators with a relatively simple structure.

Abstract:Different from odd-order harmonics, even-order harmonics are a result of broken inversion symmetry, where the second harmonic generation has long been used in the study of surface magnetism. Their underlying mechanisms are always intriguing. Here we reveal an unreported mechanism of even harmonics from the diamond with a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center from the viewpoint of group theory. Two different types of interband transition channels are identified. One is the direct transitions between a valence band and a conduction band, called type-I interband transition. Type II is defined as the indirect interband transitions between two conduction bands or two valence bands. Once type-II transitions are involved only through the inversion symmetry breaking, even-order harmonics occur in the NV center in diamond. The physical origin of this new type of interband transitions is rooted in group theory, where the inversion symmetry forbids type-II transitions between two valence or conduction bands with the same irreducible representation. By contrast, the broken inversion symmetry in the NV center lifts this restriction, giving rise to even-order harmonics. Our study represents a paradigm shift in high harmonic generation.

Abstract:In this letter theoretical calculations and experimental results of ultrasonic generation and detection up to 800 MHz using an acoustic superlattice of LiNbO3 crystals are reported. The experiment is in good agreement with theory. Transducers with an insertion loss of nearly 0 dB at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been made.

Abstract:Based on the studies of ferroelectric domain structures and the influence of growth striations on paraferroelectric phase transitions, a new type of crystal with periodic or quasi-periodic laminar ferroelectric domains has been prepared. It has been demonstrated that this kind of crystal produces significant effects with regard to optical and acoustical wave processes and can be used as a new type of device for a variety of applications in the optoelectric and acoustoelectric field. The author presents an overview of experimental and theoretical results on the concept of optical and acoustical superlattices and of novel effects and applications of such superlattices. Particular attention is given to the enhancement of second-harmonic generation in LiNbO/sub 3/ superlattices, to a resonator made of LiNbO/sub 3/ acoustical superlattices, and to resonators made of Ba/sub 2/NaNb/sub 5/O/sub 15/ acoustical superlattices, and to transducers made of LiNbO/sub 3/ acoustical superlattices.< >

Abstract:We have investigated and fabricated an optical superlattice of LiTaO3, in which two building blocks, each containing a pair of antiparallel 180° ferroelectric domains, were arranged as a Fibonacci sequence. The second- and third-harmonic generation in this structure have been studied and measured. The results verifies that the second-harmonic spectrum and the third harmonic may be generated in a quadric nonlinear medium by a series of quasi-phase-matching processes. The experimental results are in good agreement with theory.

Abstract:Artificial structures provide an efficient method to generate acoustic vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) essential for applications ranging from object manipulation to acoustic communication. However, their flexibility in terms of chirality control has thus far been limited by the lack of reconfigurability and degrees of freedom like spin–orbit coupling. Here we show that this restriction can be lifted by controlling the individual on–off states of two coherent monopolar sources inside a passive parity-time-symmetric ring cavity at an exceptional point where the counter-propagating waves coalesce into one chiral eigenmode. One of the sources satisfies the chirality-reversal condition, generating a travelling wave field fully decoupled from and opposite to the chiral eigenmode, while the other source is phase-shifted such that the wave generated by the first source can be canceled out, and the remaining sound field circulates in the same direction as the chiral eigenmode. Such non-Hermitian selective excitation enables our experimental realization of acoustic vortex emission with switchable OAM but free of system reconfiguration. Our work offers opportunities for chiral sound manipulation as well as integrated and tunable acoustic OAM devices.

Abstract:Propagation of phonon polaritons in a nonaxial aligned one-dimensional piezoelectric superlattice is studied theoretically. Because of the piezoelectric effect, both transverse and longitudinal superlattice vibrations are induced by one transverse polarized electromagnetic wave. Due to the coupling effect, two orthogonal modes of elliptically polarized polaritons are present with different propagation properties and can be tuned by the rotation angle. Abstract:Contactless excitation and detection of high harmonic acoustic overtones in a thin insulator single crystal are described using radio frequency spectroscopy techniques. Single crystal [001] silicon wafer samples were investigated, one side covered with a Nb thin film, the common starting point for the fabrication of quantum devices. The coupling between electromagnetic signals and mechanical oscillation is achieved from the Lorentz force generated by an external magnetic field. This method is suitable for any sample with a metallic surface or covered with a thin metal film. High resolution measurements of the temperature dependence of the sound velocity and elastic constants of silicon are reported and compared with known results.

Abstract:The excitation and propagation of high frequency ultrasonic waves by the micron superlattices is cited as an example, the experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions. LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 crystals with periodic laminar domains with periods about several microns and several ten microns have been fabricated by Czochralski method of crystal growth with doped melts. These may be considered as the micron superlattices for optic and acoustic wave processes involving 3rd. rank tensor coefficients which change sign across the domain walls.
