Abstract:Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of citalopram and mirtazapine in the treatment of senile depression. Methods 72 senile patients with depression were randomly assigned to citalopram group(n=36)and mirtazapine group(n=36)for six weeks.Clinical efficacies were assessed with the Hamilton Depression Scale(HAMD)and adverse effects with the Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS).Results At the end of 6th week, excellence and total effective rates were respectively 77.8% and 91.7% in the research group and 80.5% and 88.9% in the control group, which showed no significant differences(P>0.05).The HAMD scores of both groups lowere very more significantly since the end of the 1st week compared with pretreatment(P<0.01)and did continously along with treatment lasting;there was no significant differnce in group synchronization comparisons and the TESS score(P>0.05).Conclusion Both citalopram and mirtazapine have significant efficacies, higher safety and better compliance and take effects faster in the senile depression.
