Abstract:Developing facial synthetic routes for fabrication of multimetallic nanocatalysts with open porous morphology, tunable composition and tailored crystalline structure is a big challenge for fabrication of low-cost electrocatalysts. Here we report on the synthesis of single-crystalline dendritic bimetallic and multimetallic nanocubes via a solvothermal co-reduction method. These cubes show highly porous, complex 3D inner connections but single-crystalline structure. Tuning the reduction kinetics of metal precursors and introducing galvanic reaction at the active sites during growth were believed to be the keys for the formation of such unique nanostructure. Electro-catalytic oxygen reduction (ORR) and methanol oxidation (MOR) on these catalysts showed dramatic enhancements for both cathodic and anodic electrocatalysis in fuel cells, which were attributed to their unique morphology and crystalline structure, as well as synergetic effect of the multi-metallic components. This work uncovers the formation mechanism of such complex single-crystalline dendritic multimetallic nanocrystals and offers a promising synthetic strategy for geometric and crystalline control of multimetallic nanocrystals with tailored physical and chemical properties, which will benefit the development of clean energy.

Abstract:Curvy cubes: Palladium concave nanocubes enclosed by high-index {730} facets were obtained in high purity by controlling the overgrowth of Pd cubic seeds (see scheme). The concave nanocubes showed a much higher catalytic activity than the conventional Pd nanocubes enclosed by {100} facets for both electro-oxidation of formic acid and Suzuki coupling reaction. © 2011 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract:The first simple-cubic liquid crystal was obtained by coating monodisperse Au nanoparticles (NPs) with a thick corona of amino-substituted organic dendrons. This unusual structure was determined by grazing-incidence diffraction and electron density reconstruction and explained by analyzing the radial density profile of the corona. Another novel structure is proposed for the phase preceding the cubic one: a hexagonal superlattice composed of alternating dense and sparse strings of Au NPs.

Abstract:Novel polyhedral 26-facet CuS microcages decorated with amazingly unique crystalline structures as building blocks were successfully synthesized via a facile sacrificial Cu2O templates solution route. Each of the polyhedral 26-facet CuS microcages has a composition of three pairs of square mesostructural shells, four pairs of nanotwinned triangular shells, and six pairs of rectangular single crystalline shells. Structural and morphological evolutions were investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The selective synthesis of the three different types of building blocks can be attributed to the intrinsic difference of the crystallographic structures of {110}, {100} and {111} facets of Cu2O crystals, which is of great significance in the "bottom-up'' assembly of unusual hollow ordering superstructures.

Abstract:Multiferrocenyl and multiadamantyl cuboctahedron nanospheres were synthesized via rapid self-assembly reactions of twelve 90 degrees Pd-II-containing compounds and twenty-four 120 degrees organic bidentate N-ligands in acetone solution. The selected self-assembly reaction and corresponding solvent were demonstrated to be effective and simple in the preparation of self-assembled nanospheres. DOSY NMR spectroscopy, AFM images and theoretical calculations confirmed the formation of cuboctahedron complexes with the size of 4-5 nm. Multifunctional molecular self-assembly processes offer considerable synthetic advantages including significantly fewer steps, fast and facile formation of final desirable products, and will lead to a new multifunctionality platform for cuboctahedron complexes.

Abstract:Although shape and size controllable palladium nanocrystals have attracted enormous attention, the growth behavior of Pd nanocubes is not thoroughly understood. In this work, the growth pattern of size controllable Pd nanocubes is studied systematically under a variety of reaction conditions. During the growth process of the Pd nanocubes, various structures including concave cubes, triangular bipyramids, pentagonal bipyramids (decahedrons) and pentagonal rods can be generated due to the disparate behavior of the fresh Pd atoms. Different-sized nanocubes are prepared controllably by changing the dosage of KBr, which provides capping capacities toward the {100} facets that the cubes are enclosed with. Both ascorbic acid (AA) and KBr influence the reducing rate of the Pd precursors and the growth kinetics of the nanocrystals, and furthermore control the morphologies of the products. This detailed research supplements the understanding of crystal growth, and provides insight toward the comprehension of atom movements at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Highly uniform Cu2S nanocrystals with controllable sizes and shapes (circular and elongated) have been synthesized through a novel water-oil interface confined reaction. They can self-assemble into highly ordered multilayer superlattices. By controlling the size and shape of building block nanocrystals, the packing symmetry of the superlattice can be engineered. For circular nanocrystals, both fcc and hcp multilayer superlattices are found in the sample. For elongated nanocrystals, they can also generate a close-packed layer and further stack into a multilayer superlattice. The dipole moment of the inner nanocrystals is useful for their stacking. This work provides a simple bottom-up approach to integrate nanocrystals, as well as to adjust the packing symmetry of the final superlattice, which may have potential applications for nanomaterials and nanodevices in the future.

Abstract:A versatile method for selectively synthesizing single-crystalline rhombic dodecahedral, cubic, and octahedral palladium nanocrystals, as well as their derivatives with varying degrees of edge- and corner-truncation, was reported for the first time. This is also the first report regarding the synthesis of rhombic dodecahedral palladium nanocrystals. All the nanocrystals were readily synthesized by a seed-mediated method with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as surfactant, KI as additive, and ascorbic acid as reductant. At the same ascorbic acid concentration, a series of palladium nanocrystals with varying shapes were obtained through manipulation of the concentration of KI and the reaction temperature. The formation of different palladium facets were correlated with their growth conditions. In the absence of KI, the 100 palladium facets are favored. In the presence of KI, the concentration of KI and the reaction temperature play an important role on the formation of different palladium facets. The 110 palladium facets are favored at relatively high temperatures and medium KI concentrations. The 111 palladium facets are favored at relatively low temperatures and medium KI concentrations. The 100 palladium facets are favored at either very low or relatively high KI concentrations. These correlations were explained in terms of surface-energy and growth kinetics. These results provide a basis for gaining mechanistic insights into the growth of well-faceted metal nanostructures.
Shape-induced Crystallization of Binary DNA-functionalized Nanocubes.

Abstract:Leveraging the anisotropic shape of DNA-functionalized nanoparticles holds potential for shape-directed crystallization of a wide collection of superlattice structures. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we study the self-assembly of a binary mixture of cubic gold nanoparticles, which are functionalized by complementary DNA strands. We observe the spontaneous self-assembly of simple cubic (SC), plastic body-centered tetragonal (pBCT), and compositionally disordered plastic body-centered tetragonal (d-pBCT) phases due to hybridization of the DNA strands. We systematically investigate the effect of length, grafting density, as well as rigidity of the DNA strands on the self-assembly behavior of cubic nanoparticles. We measure the potential of mean force between DNA-functionalized nanocubes for varying rigidity of the DNA strands and DNA lengths. Using free-energy calculations, we find that longer and flexible DNA strands can lead to a phase transformation from SC to the pBCT phase due to a gain in entropy arising from the orientational degrees of freedom of the nanocubes in the pBCT phase. Our results may serve as a guide for self-assembly experiments on DNA-functionalized cubic nanoparticles.

Abstract:Molecule-mediated nanoparticle assemblies were obtained by the rational design and modification of chitosan, and grafting it onto gold nanoparticles, providing a new way for combining the virtues of synthetic and biological polymers. Using thiolate-functionalized chitosan molecules as soft templates, gold nanoparticles were found to self-organize into 1D nanochains via specific molecular recognition, or assemble into 2D needle-like crystals and 3D flower clusters through conformational change of the template. Such clusters may further re-crystallize into gold single crystal microcubes by way of a simple dialysis method. The as-prepared nano- and microstructures were characterized and the mechanism for the gold nanoparticle assembly process and microcrystal formation was revealed. This work demonstrates a simple and novel approach for fabricating well defined gold nano- and microstructures through a controlled nanoparticle self-assembly process.

Abstract:A simple one-pot approach based on the "benzyl alcohol route" is introduced for the fabrication of highly ordered supercrystals composed of highly uniform 3-4 nm zirconia and rare-earth stabilized zirconia nanoparticles. The as-fabricated supercrystals reach sizes larger than 10 μm and present well-defined 3D morphologies such as flower-like, rhombic dodecahedron, and bipyramids. This system is unique in that the supercrystals are formed in one-step directly in the reaction medium where the nanoparticles are synthesized. The uniformity in nanocrystal shape and size is attributed to the in situ formation of benzoate species that directs the nanoparticle growth and assembly. The low colloidal stabilization of the benzoate-capped nanoparticles in benzyl alcohol promotes the formation of supercrystals in solution by π-π interaction between the in situ formed benzoate ligands attached to neighboring particles. By varying the reaction temperature and the nature of the doping the way the nanobulding blocks assemble in the supercrystals could be controlled. Standard FCC superlattice packings were found together with more unusual ones with P6/mmm and R ̅3m symmetries.

Abstract:The aspiration of chemists has always been to design and achieve control over nanoparticle morphology at the atomic level. Here, we report a synthesis strategy and crystal structure of a perfect cubic Ag–Cu alloyed nanocluster, [Ag 55 Cu 8 I 12 (S-C 6 H 3 2,4 (CH 3 ) 2 ) 24 ][(PPh 4 )] (Ag 55 Cu 8 I 12 for short). The structure of this cluster was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and further validated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and 1 H and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The surface deviation of the cube was measured to be 0.291 Å, making it the flattest known cube to date.

Abstract:Atomic self-assembly in pure metals and metal alloys can lead into various conventional (cubic, hexagonal closepacked (hcp), and icosahedron) and non-conventional (Frank–Kasper and quasicrystal [1]) structures. The nonconventional crystalline structures often lead to unexpected physical properties. For example, the A15 (A3B type) Frank– Kasper phase of Nb3Sn, Nb3Zr and Nb3Ti are found to be superconducting. Metallic quasicrystals are hard and have low-friction, low-thermal conductivity, and special electronic properties. Beyond the atomic self-assembly, computer simulations have predicted many complex self-assembled structures, such as Frank–Kasper phases and quasicrystals, as a function of shape, size, and interaction for nanoparticles (Fig. 1) [2]. However, it has been challenging to experimentally achieve these structures from both hard (colloidal particles and mixtures) and soft (hierarchically self-assembled surfactants, dendrimers, and micellar block copolymers) nanoparticles. This is because precise shape, size, and interaction for colloidal nanoparticles are still difficult to control. In a recent report by Huang et al. [3], this grand challenge has been conquered by precise synthesis of rigid giant tetrahedra from molecular nanoparticles i.e. polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), by using two orthogonal ‘click’ chemistry techniques, namely, the azide-alkyne [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction and the thiol-ene reaction. Abstract:It is challenging to develop a general universal procedure to fabricate mesoscale cubic structures on a large scale with different nanoscale building units. It is always desirable to tune the chemical compositions within confined arrangements without damaging the mesostructures to provide the desired physiochemical properties required by various devices/applications. Herein, we report the successful design and facile preparation of a family of mesocubes with different compositions, including (a) ZnSn(OH)(6), (b) evenly distributed Zn2SnO4 and SnO2 nanoparticles, (c) hollow cubes of SnO2 nanoparticles, (d) high-ordered nanoparticles of Zn2SnO4 & Sn@C; (e) SnO2@C core-shell subunits, (f) SnO2@C nanoparticle aggregates enclosed with oxidized carbon sheath, and (g) C nanobubbles, as building units, all, except ZnSn(OH)(6), with the same confined arrangements of nanoparticles as building units inside the same framework of cubic mesostructures. This family of mesocubes will provide a rich pool of materials with different functional properties to meet demands in different applications and offer opportunities to evaluate fundamentals of structure-property-performance relationships. On the basis of the best of our knowledge, this family of facilely prepared mesocubes with unique combination of microsize cubes and compositions was reported for the first time, especially the carbon mesocubes formed by aggregation of carbon nanobubbles as the building subunits. Additionally, we demonstrated, for the first time, that two family members of mesocubes of Zn2SnO4&SnO2 and Zn2SnO4&Sn@C can be used as anode materials in lithium ion batteries with impressive high packing densities and superior rate performance.

Abstract:Cubes of CuBr with an average dimensions of 0.3–0.8μm have been prepared by a simple reaction between CuO suspension, NH2OH and KBr in the presence of deionized gelatin at 40°C. Gelatin played a decisive role as an inhibitor of the direct attack of NH2OH, KBr to CuO surfaces and coagulation of the growing CuBr in producing the cubes. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra techniques and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The sizes of the subunits of the polycrystalline CuBr particles were estimated by Debye–Scherrer formula according to XRD spectrum.

Abstract:On the basis of Kirkendall Effect, high symmetric 18-facet polyhedral nanocrystals of Cu7S4 with a hollow nanocage could be converted from cubic nanocrystals of Cu2O in an aqueous media. The presence of organic additives makes the surface energy of {110} smaller than those of {100} and {111}. The growth of nanocrystals along the normal direction of highest energy surface {100} leads to the formation of a 18-facet polyhedron.

Abstract:Construction of macro-materials with highly oriented microstructures and well-connected interfaces between building blocks is significant for a variety of applications. However, it is still challenging to confine the desired structures. Thus, well-defined building blocks would be crucial to address this issue. Herein, we present a facile process based on 1.8 nm Pd nanoclusters (NCs) to achieve centimeter-size assemblages with aligned honeycomb structures, where the diameter of a single tubular moiety is ∼4 μm. Layered and disordered porous assemblages were also obtained by modulating the temperature in this system. The reconciled interactions between the NCs were crucial to the assemblages. As a comparison, 14 nm Pd nanoparticles formed only aggregates. This work highlights the approach of confining the size of the building blocks in order to better control the assembly process and improve the stability of the structures.

Abstract:This contribution describes the self-assembly of colloidal nanodumbbells (NDs) with tunable shapes within cylindrical channels. We present that the intrinsic concave geometry of NDs endows them with peculiar packing and interlocking behaviors, which, in conjunction with the adjustable confinement constraint, leads to a variety of superstructures such as tilted-ladder chains and crossed-chain superlattices. A mechanistic investigation, corroborated by geometric calculations, reveals that the phase behavior of NDs under strong confinement can be rationalized by the entropy-driven maximization of the packing efficiency. Based on the experimental results, an empirical phase diagram is generated, which could provide general guidance in the design of intended superstructures from NDs. This study provides essential insight into how the interplay between the particle shape and confinement conditions can be exploited to direct the orientationally ordered assembly of concave nanoparticles into unusual superlattices.

Abstract:The design and assembly of monodisperse colloidal particles not only advances the development of functional materials, but also provides colloidal model systems for understanding phase behaviors of molecules. This communication describes the gram-scale synthesis of highly uniform colloidal cuboids with tunable dimension and shape biaxiality and their molecular mesogen-like assembly into various mesophasic structures in pristine purity. The synthesis relies on the nanoemulsion-guided generation of ammonium sulfate crystals that template the subsequent silica coating. The shape of the cuboidal particles can be tuned from square platelike, to biaxial boardlike, and to rodlike by independently controlling the length, width and thickness of the particles. We demonstrated the assembly of the cuboidal colloids into highly pure mesoscopic liquid crystal phases, including smectic A, biaxial smectic A, crystal B, discotic, and columnar phases, as well as established a correlation between mesophasic formation and colloidal biaxiality in experiments.

Abstract:Sub-10 nm monodisperse PbS cubes are synthesized by reacting quasi-spherical PbS nanocrystals with (NH4)(2)S. This reaction shapes the quasi-spheres into cubes via preferential growth of the (111) facets. A four-band envelope function calculation of the energy levels accounts well for the measured absorption spectra. Initial studies show that PbS cubes can organize into simple square superlattices with short ligands.
