Abstract:Many researches have been made to study English writing in China within the framework of Error Analysis(EA),but few of them are longitudinal. Will English majors at different stages tend to make different types of errors in their writings? This paper examines the different types of errors taken from 90 English compositions written by 30 English majors.Statistical analysis shows that lexical errors are of great complexity and take on a tendency of going up with the passage of time and improvement of English proficiency;errors in spelling and punctuation, which could be self corrected by students in most people's opinion, turn out to be underestimated;discourse errors appear to stay almost on the same level;and the grammatical errors are the only ones which drop in number with the passage of time. Therefore, the paper suggests that it is of great necessity to focus on different aspects in learning and teaching at different stages.
