Abstract:A brief survey of FEL activity in the People's Republic of China is given. Results obtained from a Raman type FEL are reported and experimental work on a Compton type FEL is discussed. Theoretical studies on the FEL have been carried out.

Abstract:The Shanghai Deep Ultraviolet FEL(SDUVFEL) began to commissioning since September 2009. In this paper, we present the instrumentations on the proof-of principle experiment of FEL physics study. The different beam diagnostics monitors for measurement of beam current, beam position and beam profile are briefly described, and the diagnostics data acquisition architecture is present too.

Abstract:Free-electron lasers (FELs) are fourth-generation light sources that deliver extremely high intensity, ultrashort light pulses over a broad wavelength range from far-infrared to hard x ray. FELs based on the self-amplified spontaneous emission principle have been successfully operated with ultrahigh brightness and a broad wavelengths tuning range with good transverse coherence but poor temporal coherence. In contrast, the laser-seeded FELs have provided full coherence but at selected central wavelengths, usually the harmonics of the laser seeds, with relatively narrower tuning range. We report the experimental demonstration of a high-gain harmonic-generation (HGHG) FEL that is continuously tunable over a wide range using the combination of optical parametrical amplification, variable-gap undulator, and harmonic selection, where the temporal coherence is preserved as confirmed with the Michelson interferometry. In order to achieve higher photon energies, the first try of cascaded HGHG with a fresh-bunch technique is also made at the Shanghai Deep Ultraviolet Free-electron Laser test facility.

Abstract:Development of advanced light sources has become more and more important in the frontier scientific research. The development of new advanced light sources has pushed experimental studies from macroscopic world into the atomic and molecular levels, from studies of physical systems at static conditions to ultrafast dynamical processes, and from investigations at simple experimental conditions to more complex and real environment. Free electron laser (FEL) with high brightness, ultrafast laser pulses in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelength region is an ideal light source for excitation of valence electrons and ionization of molecular systems with very high efficiency. Dalian Coherent Light Source (DCLS) delivers 50-150 nm EUV beams with ultrafast pulse durations of 100 fs or ps to users. DCLS, as the first FEL user facility in China, has wide applications in the frontier researches of physics, chemistry, biology, especially in the field of basic energy sciences. This project is supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China and developed jointly by Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics and Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Abstract:We have developed a first Raman FEL in China [1]. A recent experiment for improving the efficiency is reported. The wiggler length has been enlarged from 79 cm to 119 cm, the efficiency of 3.7% was obtained.

Abstract:Free-electron laser (FEL) experiments, especially the seeded FEL related experiments at the Shanghai deep-ultraviolet FEL (SDUV-FEL) test facility during the past few years, are summarized. The main goals of these experimental studies are to gain first-hand experience on emerging novel FEL concepts, and to tackle the technical challenges related to X-ray FELs, which are of crucial importance to the future X-ray FEL user facilities in China.

Abstract:The Shanghai FEL User Facility (SFEL) for interdisciplinary studies is based on a rf linear accelerator. The prime goal of SFEL is to provide a broadly tunable laser beam from near-Ill to far-lit with tens of MW at peak power. A linear accelerator will operate in three modes: ~ 3 MeV mode, 20 ~ 30 McV mode and 40 ~ 50 MeV mode. In 20 ~ 30 MeV mode, the accelerator consists of a ns grid gun driven at 476 MHz, a 476 MHz subharmonic buncher, a 2856 MHz T-W type of bunchcr with high field gradients, and a SLAC type linac.

Abstract:FELiChEM is a new experimental facility under construction at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), whose core device is two free electron laser oscillators generating middle-infrared and far-infrared laser and covering the spectral range of 2.5-200 $\mu$m. It will be a dedicated infrared light source aiming at energy chemistry research. We present the brief design of FEL oscillators with the emphasis put on the middle-infrared oscillator. Most of the basic parameters are determined and the anticipated performance of the output radiation is given. The first light of FELiChEM is targeted for the end of 2017.

Abstract:First lasing of the CAEP FIR-FEL at the center wavelength of 115 microns was observed in March 2005. The facility is based on RF linac, which consists of an RF-gun, an alpha magnet, an L-band SW accelerator, a beam transport line, a wiggler, an optical cavity and a measurement system. Abstract:Shanghai Coherent Light Facility (SCLF) is a quasi-CW hard X-ray free electron laser user facility which is recently proposed. Due to the high repetition rate, high quality electron beams, it is straightforward to consider an X-ray free electron laser oscillator (XFELO) operation for SCLF. The main processes for XFELO design, and parameters optimization of the undulator, X-ray cavity and electron beam are described. The first three-dimensional X-ray crystal Bragg diffraction code, named BRIGHT is built, which collaborates closely with GENESIS and OPC for numerical simulations of XFELO. The XFELO performances of SCLF is investigated and optimized by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation.

Abstract:The free electron laser (FEL), as a next-generation light source, is an attractive tool in scientific frontier research because of its advantages of full coherence, ultra-short pulse duration, and controllable polarization. Owing to the demand of real-time bunch diagnosis during FEL experiments, precise nondestructive measurements of the polarization and X-ray energy spectrum using one instrument are preferred. In this paper, such an instrument based on the electron time-of-flight technique is proposed. By considering the complexity and nonlinearity, a numerical model in the framework of Geant4 has been developed for optimization. Taking the Shanghai Soft X-ray FEL user facility as an example, its measurement performances' dependence on the critical parameters was studied systematically, and, finally, an optimal design was obtained, achieving resolutions of 0.5% for the polarization degree and 0.3 eV for the X-ray energy spectrum.

Abstract:Shanghai soft X-ray free-electron laser facility (SXFEL) is the first coherent X-ray light source in China with the shortest wavelength down to 2 nm. SXFEL is based on a 1.5 GeV C-band linac, including one seeded FEL line, one self-amplified spontaneous emission FEL line and five experimental stations. The development of SXFEL is in two stages, the test facility SXFEL-TF and the user facility SXFEL-UF. SXFEL-TF is based on a 0.84 GeV linac, aiming to master the key technologies of a cascaded FEL with high gain harmonic generation (HGHG) and echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) scheme. Meanwhile, the object of SXFEL-UF is to start user operation at the end of 2019. This paper presents the design, construction and commissioning status of SXFEL. © 2019, Chinese Lasers Press. Abstract:At University of Science and Technology of China, we have an Infrared (IR) free electron laser (FEL) oscillator experimental facility (FELiChEM) to generate radiations in the wavelength range of 2.5-50 m and 40-200 m. The output power is one of the most concerned parameters by the users. Since the electron beam distribution and the out-coupling hole in the resonator mirror can influence the saturated power and the optical mode, it would be an important issue to the output power of the IR light source. It has been demonstrated that use of a hollow electron beam could offer a higher saturated power than use of a Gaussian electron beam. Thus we consider the operation of FELiChEM with a hollow beam, and analyze its effect on FEL performance.

Abstract:The property of the FEL polarization is of great importance to the user community. FEL pulses with ultra-high intensity and flexible polarization control ability will absolutely open up new scientific realms. In this paper, several polarization control approaches are presented to investigate the great potential on Dalian coherent light source, which is a government-approved novel FEL user facility with the capability of wavelength continuously tunable in the EUV regime of 50-150 nm. The numerical simulations show that both circularly polarized FELs with highly modulating frequency and 100 microjoule level pulse energy could be generated at Dalian coherent light source.

Abstract:We present the layout of the Peking University FEL facility (PKU-FEL), to be driven by a superconducting accelerator, which is currently under construction. PKU-FEL is a test facility designed to study the physical and technical issues of single pass SASE FEL and high-average power FEL. During the intial stage of the IR SASE FEL, the first goal is to demonstrate a high-brightness electron beam and set up a SASE FEL platform to study some novel aspects in physics. In this paper, the study of theoretical and numerical simulations required to design the PKU SASE FEL has been described. A superconducting RF injector and a main linac composed of two 9-cell superconducting cavities are used to produce a high-quality electron beam at about 40MeV. Abstract:A grating spectrometer is developed for Raman free electron laser (FEL) diagnostics. Spectral measurements of a Raman FEL by a microwave grating spectrometer are presented. The aluminum reflection gratings with groove constant d = 7.5 mm, d = 3.5 mm and blaze angle theta = 30-degrees are used. The spectrometer provides spectral coverage in the ranges of 6-10 mm and 2.2-4.8 mm with a resolution of 0.3 mm for an angle of incidence alpha = 60-degrees. The experimental results show that the central frequency of the spectra decreases with increasing the wiggler magnetic field, which is in accordance with the theoretical predictions concerned with waveguide mode effects on the collective FEL. The spectrum of an FEL oscillator with distributed feedback cavity was measured. 3 mm FEL radiation using a small-period wiggler is obtained.

Abstract:Free Election Laser Terahertz source is a good choice for THz source, whose wavelength is tunable [1]. Using 1D FEL stimulation code FELO [2], we simulate the output characteristics of China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP) THz FEL, which is a waveguide FEL oscillator. The beam quality's influence on the operation of FEL, such as energy dispersion, emittance and beam current have been studied to designate a set of beam parameters. Besides, the output performance of FEL at different output coupling ratio is analyzed. The cavity detuning is discussed too. Meanwhile the influence of the position of the undulator in the cavity on the FEL performance is also studied.

Abstract:China Academy of Engineering Physics tera-hertz free electron laser (CAEP THz FEL, CTFEL) is the first THz FEL oscillator in China, which was jointly built by CAEP, Peking university and Tsinghua university. This THz FEL facility consists of a GaAs photocathode high-voltage DC gun, a superconducting RF linac, a planar undulator and a quasi-concentric optical resonator. The terahertz lasers frequency is continuous adjustable from 2 THz to 3 THz. The macro-pulse average power is more than 10 W and the micro-pulse power is more than 0.5 MW.
