Abstract:In a solution culture experiment under cadmium stress, the effects of different concentrations of selenium in the culture solution on rice seedling growth, selenium and cadmium absorption, cadmium transfer and cadmium leakage of rice roots were investigated. The results showed that with a selenium concentration lower than 250μg/L in the culture solution, selenium alleviated the toxicity of cadmium to rice growth, with a selenium concentration greater than 500μg/L,it failed to alleviate cadmium stress, and with a selenium concentration greater than 800μg/L,a synergistic effect occurred between selenium and cadmium, aggravating the toxicity of cadmium to rice.Cadmium content in the shoot and roots of rice plants decreased significantly with increasing selenium concentrations in the culture solution, the extent of decrease being greater in the shoot than in the roots. With a selenium concentration higher than 800μg/L in the culture solution, selenium content in the shoot and roots reached the maximum.Selenium decreased the translation coefficient of cadmium and inhibited the transport of cadmium from the roots to the shoot of the rice plants, thus decreasing cadmium accumulation in the above-ground parts of the plants. With increasing selenium concentration in the culture solution, the leakage of cadmium from rice roots decreased significantly.Very little leakage of cadmium was observed when selenium concentration in solution was more than 500μg/L.
