An Iconographical Turn in Contemporary Cultural Criticism

Abstract:Today's postmodern consumer society enables people to appreciate and consume works of art in an aesthetic way,hence the birth of iconographical writing with images as the major means of representation,for it may satisfy the aesthetic needs of the reading public.But icon-critics should be endowed with greater ability to read and interpret pictures.Thus the rise of iconographical writing and criticism does not necessarily mean the degradation of man's verbal ability,but rather,it anticipates the heightening of his ability of appreciating and interpreting various works of art.In this Post-Theoretic Era of the new century,iconographical criticism is still marginalized,but it will surely form,together with such newly emergent critical trends as ecocriticism,gender criticism and diaspora criticism,a pluralistic framework of criticism.Since China has a long tradition of glyph and reading images,iconographical writing and criticism will have a bright prospect of development.
