The Study of Historical Materialism:Problem Domain and Disciplinary Character

Abstract:Marxist philosophy is dialectical materialism and historical materialism.To develop and innovate Marxist philosophy,it is necessary to probe deep into historical materialism,one of the core fields of Marxist philosophy.Significant practical problems encountered in exploring the China road also make it inevitable to advance the study of historical materialism.This explains to a large extent why historical materialism has again become the focus of academic attention.To deepen academic research on the nature and themes of historical materialism,this journal invited several scholars to contribute their different perspectives on the understanding and interpretation of historical materialism in a discussion for this special issue.Professor Hao Lixin from the School of Philosophy of Renmin University of China advocates an emphasis on the inner wholeness of the theory of historical materialism,and a holistic grasp of its nature,features and forms of development.He believes it will be useful to deepen our understanding of the theoretical value and practical significance of historical materialism and to understand or solve some controversies concerning it.Feng Ziyi,aprofessor of the Department of Philosophy at Peking University,argues that to accurately understand and grasp historical materialism and define it rationally,we must give full consideration to the point that liberation of the proletariatand mankind is the theme of Marxist philosophy.In pursuing this theme,Marx not only achieved a thorough critique of capitalism but also enriched and developed historical materialism.This provides theoretical stimulus and value for socialist construction with Chinese characteristics.Professor He Lai from the Center for Fundamentals of Philosophy of Jilin University holds that historical materialism is profoundly consistent with dialectics.Through his critique of Hegel,Marx,starting from man's perceptual practice,laid a real foundation for dialectics.Historical materialism's concept of"social history"provides a practical basis for going beyond binary opposition and has rich dialectical implications.Being critical is the theoretical essence of dialectics and also the theoretical quality of historical materialism.Professor Zheng Yongkou and Associate Professor Pan Zhongwei from the School of Public Administration of Zhengzhou University argue that classical German philosophy put forward the goal of scientification of philosophy;Marx and Engels critically inherited its basic definitions of"philosophy"and"science."Despite the fact that it has its own philosophical premises,historical materialism remains the theoretical outline of historical science.It is neither historical philosophy nor Comtian empirical science.
