Farmers' Participation in and Satisfaction of the New Rural Cooperative Medical Schemes: A Survey of 245 Households in Three Provinces

Abstract:Our survey shows that the participation rate of the new rural cooperative medical schemes is as high as 93.33 percent.Empirical results of the logistic model indicate neighborhood effects significantly raise farmers' participation rate.Specifically,the participation rate of farmers whose neighbors are subscribers of the new rural cooperative medical schemes is 314 times that of farmers who has few neighbors as subscribers of the schemes.The participation rate achieved through other publicity means other than neighborhood effects is 68 percent lower.The participation rate of high-income households is 3.45 times that of low-income households.Farmers' satisfaction rates for the services of medical institutions at all levels are all above 80 percent.Existing problems include inadequate institutional security,lower levels of satisfaction with grass-root medical institutions in technology,attitude,price and others.
