Abstract:Between the late 1930s and the early 1940s, a small group of Chinese anthropologists and sociologists carried out a series of field studies in the countryside of Yunnan. Among them, Fei Xiaotong, Francis L.K. Hsu, and Tian Rukang wrote three famous ethnographies. Each dealt with a different theme. But all of the three were deeply concerned with the cultural difference between rural China (as a whole) and modernity. After 60 years, a group of young anthropologists were sent to the three places where Fei, Hsu, and Tian conducted their research. There, they collected data and sought to restudy the villages. They were inspired both by the earlier studies and the new ideas of ethnographic restudy. Reflecting on Fei’s economics, Hsu’s confinement to inner village life and negligence of the outer world of Dali, and Tian’s Durkheimian sociology, all three young scholars have drawn their own conclusions on the issues of political power, hierarchical order, and ideology. Written by the organizer of the restudy project, this article provides an overview of the research and suggests an interpretive line. By bringing the three studies together, it also seeks to suggest something more general concerning the legacy of “human ecology” in Chinese social sciences.

Abstract:There are some achievements about modern changes of Chinese education at the macro-middle-scale levels.But,what role did modern education play in people’s life? What did modern education bring to the people’s life,especially for the vast majority of the population,the rural masses? Few people have touched these essential questions.In fact,since social anthropology was introduced from the West during the early 1900s,some researchers of different periods have described and analyzed the practical situation of the rural education in modern China in their social anthropological writings or historical writings that invested with anthropology.Some of them can enlighten our research about modern rural education.We can borrow ideas from the view ofotherraised by anthropology to learn the practical situation of the rural education in modern China,and use community studies to find the relationship between the rural education and the rural masses life.

Abstract:In recent years, China has undergone an extremely rapid phase of urbanization, which has caused many acute problems between urban and rural areas. This paper identifies three categories of social, economic and environmental conflict, and investigates their significance according to the views of two different populations using a questionnaire survey and interviews. Using fuzzy set theory, the key causes of urban-rural conflict related to urbanization in China are identified. The differences in urban and rural people's perceptions of these key factors are discussed and the factors underlying these perceptions are analyzed.
The Dilemma of Land Expansion and Governance in Rural China: A Comparative Study Based on Three Townships in Zhejiang Province

Abstract:Why do Chinese farmers continually utilize high-quality yet scarce cultivated land and extensively construct residences? Why is the Chinese government unable to control the continuous expansion of rural residential land after implementing strict economical and intensive land policies? To answer these questions, we launched a comparative study of three townships in Zhejiang Province. Based on a survey of 576 households and 72 rural government officials, this paper identified the determinants of rural house-building, explored different models of government intervention and provided recommendations for future government efforts. Results showed that (1) children, environment, investment, "mianzi", and "feng shui" factors were the main driving forces that influence farmers to construct residential structures, although primary and secondary differences in the various townships existed; (2) three problems in the specific governance emerged: the lack of farmers' unified action, failure to protect the rights of farmers, and the problem of meeting the funds demand of homestead replacement; (3) Actively exploring effective village planning, establishing linkages among stakeholders, effectively promoting farmers' participation, creating a service-oriented government, and introducing a Public-Private Partnership mechanism may effectively address the problems related to rural residential expansion and governance. The results indicated a need to pay more attention to the motivations of rural house-building, the interests of stakeholders and the funding arrangements of the project in future government intervention.

Abstract:This study reviews and forecasts the study of rural residential areas,points out flaws in the existing studies,and predicts the key points in future studies.A comparative study was employed in this essay.Results indicate that existing studies of rural residential areas mainly focus on development trends,potential assessment,models and planning and driving forces and efficiency valuation.In the end,it is concluded that the studies regarding theories,regional difference,system constitution,peasant and government behaviors and interdisciplinary research shall be enhanced.

Abstract:The thesis, in view of the civilization construction in urbanization and the coordinate development in multistage city systems, makes a study of how to change the passivity in deal with problems accumulated in city planning, city management and city building, and how to more rightly in the near future understand city in the city studies. The thesis puts forward that the key issue is a correct strategy to be formulated. It also recommend us to make a systematic study and introduce on the theories and experience of other countries in the city planning, including city history and present condition ,and to do the studies in important fields and at different levels.

Abstract:Different rural developmental options exist because of different national and regional contexts. Since its reform and opening-up policy, China has undergone rapid urbanization and development, and rural-urban relationships have become disjointed. China's attempts to change these circumstances are inadequate. A new movement known as "rural construction," which aims to promote or direct the social or economic development of rural areas, has been gaining momentum in recent years. This paper takes Heping village in Shanghai as a typical case of rural construction, and integrates the methods of statistics, field investigation, and personal participation into rural research. The village presents challenges related to multiple "high-tension lines," literally and figuratively. In a literal sense, physical high-tension lines are located near residents' houses; in a figurative sense, high-tension lines come from power and capital, symbolizing the predominant top-down mode of rural construction and imbalance of allocated funds in the process of rural planning; and finally, psychological high-tension lines make the residents lose their sense of belonging. The local governments often regard village construction projects as opportunities to showcase their work, failing to involve villagers in the decision-making process; movements such as beautification of the countryside lack bottom-up initiatives. However, a collaborative approach between the government and residents is ideal in rural planning and construction. The theories of rural research should be renewed under the context of the changing rural world. It is worth exploring some new methods like metaphor into rural studies.

Abstract:In recent years,more attention has been directed to problems in the studies of international relations in China,namely,separation of theory and practice,lack of originality in theory,methodology that lags behind,irregular academic criteria and weakness in academic criticism.As a result of reflections on these issues,the author suggests that being aware of these problems in our own studies will promote combination of international relation theories with practice and will be a means to ensure theoretical innovation.We should take advantage of our tradition in emphasizing history to enhance dialogue between theory and history,reinforce researches on methodology by adding to our store of knowledge skills of quantitative studies and improving our ability to conduct qualitative studies.Meanwhile,we should not neglect establishment of academic criteria to carry out academic criticism scientifically.

Abstract:Based on the literature review of CNKI database on rural settlements in China over the last three decades, the paper supplied a general comment on the main research contents and current situation of domestic rural settlement in China from the view of architecture as well as other related fields. On the base of the review, the paper made a conclusion on the systematization of the complicated rural settlement under different research penetrations, accompanied by an explic itassessment of the major theories and methodologies deployed in the field. After that, it conven iently put forward that the future study should be focused on emphasizing the broadening of interdisciplinary vision to make the research orientation more diversified, enhancing the quantitative research scope by computer to make the research contents more scientific and accurate, and instructing related design exploration to combine the research achievement and design practice more effectively.

Abstract:This paper offers a thorough review of the development of international studies in China over the past decade in terms of specific research areas and topics.The review covers both macro and micro issues,among which are hot issues like Marxist theories on international relations,theories of realism,studies of the international regime,constructivism school,discussions about international strategies,process of globalization,international economical politics,studies on the United Nations,nationalism,regionalism,feminism and so on.The paper also analyzes micro issues such as politics and culture,ecological politics,ethics in international relations,subdisciplines such as the British school and the Copenhagen school,and studies on sovereignty,security,benefits of the state,methodology and the Chinese characters as well.In fact,all the major issues and research topics discussed in the academic circle are included in this survey.The author not only provides a brief summary of the achievements in these research areas and the background of the researches,but also offers to comment on the existing problems and suggests diretions for future studies,with emphasis placed on the importance and hardships of this discipline in China today.

Abstract:The central government of China recently mapped out an important strategy on “building a new countryside” to overall coordinate urban and rural development and gear up national economic growth. This paper analyzes the potential factors influencing the building of a new countryside in China, and provides a critical discussion of the problems and implications concerning carrying out this campaign, from a geographical perspective. To some extent, regional discrepancies, rural poverty, rural land-use issues and the present international environment are four major potential factors. Our analyses indicated that land consolidation, praised highly by the governments, is not a panacea for China's rural land-use issues concerning building a new countryside, and the key problem is how to reemploy the surplus rural labors and resettle the land-loss farmers. More attentions should be paid to caring for farmers’ future livelihoods in the process of implementing the strategy. The regional measures and policies concerning building a new countryside need to take the obvious regional discrepancies both in physical and socio-economic conditions into account. In a World Trade Organization (WTO) membership environment, efficient land use for non-agricultural economic development, to some extent, needs to be a priority in the eastern region instead of blindly conserving land to maintain food security, part task of which can be shifted to the central region and the northeastern region. More preferential policies should be formulated to reverse the rural brain–drain phenomenon. Based on the analyses and the complexity of China's rural problems, the authors argue that building new countryside in China will be an arduous task and a long road, the target of which is hard to achieve successfully in this century.

To understand the contexts of these trends of thought being occurred and to think that the problems they mean to resolve have much to do with our own cultural construction. Are they only the problems of the West, or, of our whole world? Are they only the national, inner problems, or, the global ones? Are they the problems of the modern literary scholarship, or, the post-modern ones? Deeply inquiring these problems would be most helpful for us to rethink our own problems and to establish the new Chinese literary theory in the context of globalization in this new century.

Abstract:Being the world's largest developing country and having a vast rural population and large swaths of rural areas, China has experienced complex historical periods. However, few studies provide general summaries of spatial evolution of rural settlements, particularly the evolutionary contexts of complex historical processes. Considering that China's society, economy, and spaces in urban and rural areas have entered a phase of rapid restructuring in response to economic globalisation and the new urbanisation in recent years, exploring and summarising the general evolutionary path of the spatial structure of rural settlements over a long period of time constitute a particularly important research objective. This study examined Sunan region, an ideal representative epitomising the modern history of China, as a case area, results found that the evolutionary process of spatial structure of rural settlements could be categorised as discrete and isomorphic, centripetal and hierarchical, branching and dual, and diversified network system follow the historical periodisation. Rural spatial structure has experienced three moments of transformation under the trend of urban-rural mutual interaction, thus mechanism is driven by internal and external forces under economic and social change over different periods, evidently in contemporary era. Although rural settlements have manifested diversified developmental patterns in China, theories and methods that are applicable to domestic situations are still urgently needed to summarise the evolutionary mechanism and to provide vital channels for the national strategy of rural revitalisation in the process of urban rural integrated development.

Abstract:Abstract Under the background of response to the call of rural civilization, it aims to solve the problems of serious cultural deficiency and withered of the rural landscape in the village folklore. By means of analysis on the overall of the basic conditions in the village of Tianzhu where She-ethnic minority group inhabiting in, the thesis cleared and analyzed the culture from the perspective of material and immaterial level in the rural landscape on the basis of a cultural gene. And then the atlas of the cultural gene in the area of She-ethnic minority group in Fujian will be constructed. Through the combination with the design elements for the rural landscape, the thesis puts forward solutions relatively for the five landscape elements including architecture, service facility, formation, plant, and water body.

Abstract:Based on rethinking of the situation in architectural development in China, and reacting to the heated tectonic conceptual discussions within the Chinese architecture world, the Graduate School of Architecture at Nanjing University held a symposium on Structure, Fabric and topography, which Kenneth Frampton of Columbia University was invited as a chief organizer Professor Frampton set the framework for the symposium and invited speakers from Japan,America and Europe.The discussion focused from the origins of these categories in mid-19th century Germany in thinking, then to the way as it is continuing to make itself manifest in contemporary architecture, landscape and urban form.
