Abstract:The chloromethylation reaction of 2-chloro-thiophene via phase transfer catalysis was carried out to synthesize 2-chloro-3-chloromethyl-thiophene, where the catalyst was tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB). The chloromethylation reagents used were paraformaldehyde and 37% concentrated hydrochloric acid. The structure of 2-chloro-3-chloromethyl-thiophene was confirmed by means of GC-MAS, IR and ^1H NMR spectrometries. The yield was 77.6%. The O-alkylation reactions between 1-(2,4-dichloro-phenyl)-2-(1-imidazol)-ethanol and 2-chloro-3-chloromethyl-thiophene were performed in a two -phase system of organic solvent/solid NaOH under phase transfer catalytic condition. At the end, the tioconazole nitrate was formed by the addition of nitric acid. The structure of tioconazole was confirmed with IR and ^1H NMR spectra. The yield of tioconazole was 53.0%.

Abstract:Ultrapure diethyl 1,1-cyclopropanedicarboxylate (1) undergoes ring-opening polymerization when placed in the presence of small amounts of sodium thiophenolate (2) at temperatures above 80 degrees C, and leads to the synthesis of a carbon-chain polymer substituted on every third carbon atom by ethyl ester substituents. 1 polymerizes also in the presence of 2 generated in situ from thiophenol and metallic sodium, but does not polymerize in the presence of metallic sodium alone. Polymerizations are slow and require high concentrations in monomer and initiator to obtain reasonable polymerization times. In spite of the high temperatures used in some experiments (up to 130 degrees C), no structural subunit resulting from side reactions was detected, presumably due to the high stability of the propagating malonate carbanion. Polymers of narrow molecular weight distribution were obtained at both 80 and 130 degrees C ((M) over bar(w)/(M) over bar(n) < 1,14), and absolute degrees of polymerization increased with polymer yields. These results were rationalized on the basis of a quasi-living polymerization mechanism. Thermal properties of poly(1) were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Poly(1) is stable up to 275 degrees C and is a micro-crystalline polymer insoluble in most typical solvents, with the noticeable exception of chloroform and dichloromethane.

Abstract:Polymerization of a phenylacetylene monomer containing chiral center and thiolacetate was achieved by using a zwitterionic rhodium complex or Rh+ [eta-C6H5 (nbd) B- (C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. Chemical structure was characterized with infrared (IR) nuclear magnetic resonance ( NMR), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic techniques, and the experimental data confirmed the formation of the expected polymer. The obtained polymer was soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform, dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran, and its weight-average molecular weight was about 7.32 x 10(4). The polymer was highly thermally stable; it lost 5% of its original weight at a temperature. of 336 degrees C, and about 31% residual weight was measured at 900 degrees C. SEM images showed that rod-like ordered entities were observed for the thin film fabricated by casting polymer solution (a concentration of 5.0 mg/ml, in chloroform) under ambient condition; while crystallites were observed when dilute polymer solution ( a concentration of 0.5 mg/ml, in chloroform) wits used to film fabrication. As revealed by TEM images.. when the evaporation rate was controlled to be slow and the concentration of polymer in chloroform was higher than 1.0 mg/mL,a polymer layer spread on the carbon supporting film on copper micro-grid; when polymer concentration was lower than 0.5 mg/mL, rnicrocrystallites with regular shapes were observed. Based on the macromolecular structure, the improvement of the thermal stability and the formation ordered microstructure can be tentatively ascribed to the role of chiral centers on the side chains of the resulted polyphenylacetylene.
Ultra-clean isotope engineered double-walled carbon nanotubes as tailored hosts to trace the growth of carbyne

Abstract:Increasing attention is currently given to carbyne, the sp1 hybridized one-dimensional carbon allotrope, because of its predicted outstanding mechanical, optical, and electrical properties. Although recently substantial progress has been reported on confined carbyne synthesized inside double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs), its formation mechanism and precursors for growth remain elusive. Here, we show a rational design of isotope engineered ultra-clean DWCNTs as tailored hosts to trace the growth of carbyne, which allows to identify the precursor and unravel the formation mechanism of carbyne during high-vacuum annealing at high-temperatures. Using this approach, ultra-clean DWCNTs with 80.4% 13C-enriched inner walls and outer tubes of naturally abundant served to unambiguously prove that only the carbonaceous materials inside the DWCNTs can act as precursors. The exchange of C atoms between inner and outer tubes happens without any growth of carbyne. After applying a secondary oxidation step, it is possible to produce the carbonaceous precursors from the partially oxidized DWCNTs. In this manner, not only carbyne with a record of ~28.8% 13C enrichment is grown, but concomitant healing, reorganization and regrowth of the DWCNTs occurs. This work enables to identify the precursor and trace the growth mechanism of confined carbyne with engineered properties. This is a crucial step, towards accessing the full application potential of confined carbyne hybrids by tailoring not only the isotopic fillers, but also the inner and outer tubes of the DWCNT hosts.

Abstract:It has been a challenge to synthesize thiol-functionalized polyacetylenes because of the poisoning effect of mercapto group on the early transition-metal catalysts. Rhodium complexes such as [Rh(cod)Cl](2) can catalyze the polymerizations but the products are insoluble and intractable. In this work, we tackled this challenge. Sulfur-containing polyacetylenes with macroscopic processability were successfully synthesized by separating thiol pendant from polyene backbone with a flexible spacer (in PI), capping free mercapto group with acetyl or alkyl group (in P2 or P3), and using a zwitterionic complex Rh+[eta(6)-C6H5(nbd)B-(C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. The soluble polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, PL, and TGA analyses. Due to the specific interactions between thiol group and zinc cation, ZnO nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the surfaces of polymer films, as verified by AFM analysis. Polymer P2 and ZnO nanoparticles could be readily hybridized by simply mixing the two components in an organic solvent such as chloroform, THF, or DMF. SEM images revealed that the morphology of the film cast from the solution of the P2/ZnO hybrid was dominated by well-dispersed nanoparticles and smooth surface.

Abstract:A novel liquid/solid two-phase reaction has been discovered that enables destruction of a series of low-molecular-weight chloro-/bromo-hydrocarbons to carbon-based materials. The solid phase is anhydrous potassium hydroxide and the liquid phase is a benzene or tetrahydrofuran solution of halide and contains a certain amount of tetrabutyr ammonium bromide (TBAB) as phase transfer catalyst. The structure of the carbon-based materials have been characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), FT-Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, and their morphologies have been examined by wide-angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that the products are amorphous nanoparticles and contain mainly elemental carbon. They consist of sp, sp(2), and sp(3) carbon atoms simultaneously and can be regarded as carbyne analogues. This work provides a convenient method for synthesizing new carbon-based materials in relatively high yields. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:The synthesis of carbyne has remained an elusive goal for decades. One of the significant reasons is that high-purity and high-concentration hydrogen end-capped polyynes (C2nH2) as the most important model molecule and precursors for carbyne have been not widely prepared. Herein, we develop a facile and universal strategy to obtain high-purity and high-concentration C8-18H2 molecules using solid linear carbon chains with silver atom ending-capped (Ag2C8-18) as reaction precursors. The purified and concentrated C8-18H2 solution and Ag2C8-18 powder are evaluated by a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope. These results confirm that the high-purity and high-concentration C2nH2 are obtained through the reaction of metal carbides solid and hydrogen chloride molecule. Our strategy for investigating unprotected linear carbon chains in solid and the successful preparation of high-concentration C2nH2 from solid carbides provide a new avenue for the research of linear carbon chains.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials receive much attention due to enhanced mechanical and electrical properties that arise from nanoconfinement. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (3-dimensional) and graphene sheets (2-dimensional) have seen applications as sensors, high-strength fiber reinforcements, and adhesives. Carbyne, a 1-dimensional purely carbon structure consisting of alternating single and triple bonds, is projected to be the strongest material in the known world, with specific strength several times that of CNTs and graphene. Despite its desirable properties, carbyne’s extreme instability under standard conditions has inhibited its commercial development. Recent advancements in carbyne synthesis using CNTs as molecular scaffolds show that carbyne may finally be able to progress from theory to reality. Here, an approach for the preparation and stabilization of long-chain carbyne without the use of CNTs is proposed. Using multilevel pulse-voltage injection (MLPI) to create uniform, subnanometer diameter pores in silicon nitride as thermally stable nanoreactors, initial theoretical calculations suggest that carbyne may be synthesized under high temperature and vacuum. Carbyne chains may then be extracted from the pores and subsequently stabilized by immersion into a solution of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA). The long-chain carbyne is then free to be used for a multiplicity of applications, including low-threshold sensors and the realization of high-strength carbyne fibers.

Low-Temperature Synthesis of Weakly Confined Carbyne inside Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Carbyne, a one-dimensional (1D) carbon allotrope with alternating triple and single bonds, has the highest known mechanical strength but is unstable to bending, limiting synthesis to short linear chains. Encapsulation within carbon nanotubes (CNTs) stabilizes carbyne, forming confined carbyne (CC), thus enabling further research concerning attractive 1D physics and materials properties of carbyne. While CC has been synthesized in multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) using the arc-discharge method and in double-walled CNTs (DWCNTs) via high-temperature high-vacuum (HTHV) method, synthesis in single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) has been challenging due to their fragility under such conditions. In this work, we report a low-temperature method to synthesize CC inside SWCNTs (CC@SWCNT). By annealing SWCNTs containing ammonium deoxycholate (ADC) at 400°C, ADC is converted into CC without damaging the SWCNTs. Raman spectroscopy revealed a strong CC phonon (CC-mode) peak at 1860-1870 cm^-1, much stronger than the SWCNT G-band peak, confirming a high fraction of CC in the resulting material. The Raman mapping result showed the uniformity of the CC-mode signal across the entire film sample, proving the high efficiency of this method in synthesizing CC in every SWCNT of appropriate size. Notably, the CC-mode peaks of CC@SWCNT (above 1860 cm^-1) are higher than those reported in previous CC@CNT samples (mostly less than 1856 cm^-1). This is attributed to larger SWCNT diameters (over 0.95 nm) used in this study, compared to the typical 0.6-0.8 nm range. Larger diameters result in reduced confinement, allowing carbyne to closely resemble free-standing carbyne while remaining stabilized. This low-temperature synthesis of long-chain, nearly free-standing carbyne within large-diameter SWCNTs offers new opportunities for exploring 1D physics and the unique properties of carbyne for potential applications.

Abstract:Delicate synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanostructures from two-dimensional (2D) graphene Moiré layers holds tremendous interest among materials science, due to its unique physiochemical properties exhibited during formation of hybrid configurations with sp-sp2 hybridization. However, controlled synthesis of such hybrid sp-sp2 configurations remains highly challenging. Henceforth, we employed a simple hydrothermal technique using agro-industrial waste as the carbon source to synthesize 1D carbyne nanocrystals from nanoconstricted zones of 2D graphene Moiré layers. Utilizing suite of characterization techniques, we delineate the mechanism of carbyne nanocrystal formation, wherein the origin of carbyne nanochains has been deciphered from graphene intermediates due to the presence of hydrothermally cut nanoconstriction regime engendered over well-oriented graphene Moiré patterns. Autogenous hydrothermal pressurization of agro-industrial waste under controlled conditions led to generation of epoxy rich graphene intermediates which concomitantly gives rise to carbyne nanocrystal formation in oriented Moiré layers with nanogaps. The unique growth of carbyne nanocrystals over few layers of holey graphene exhibits excellent paramagnetic properties, predominant localization of electrons and interfacial polarization effects. Further, we extended the application of as-synthesized carbyne product (Cp) towards real-time electrochemical based toxic metal (As3+) sensing in groundwater samples (from riverbanks), depicting superior sensitivity (0.22 mA/μM) even at extremely lower concentration (0.0001 μM) corroborating with the impedance spectroscopy analysis.

Additionally, the example of domino carbo-carbonylation reactions has been demonstrated using diene-tethered aryl iodide as a starting material, forming an oxygen-containing bicyclic product in good yield. It is speculated that the carbo-carboxylation reaction of alkenes proceeds via a carbo-silyloxycarbonylation pathway.

Abstract:Thiocarbonyl dithiocyanate (1) and chlorothiocarbonyl thiocyanate (2) were synthesized from thiophosgene and ammonium or silver thiocyanate, respectivley. Their crystal structures show syn‐anti (1) and syn (2) conformations, which were confirmed in the bulk phases by powder X‐ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Further calculations explain the isolation of the kintetic reaction products by a lower transition stateas opposed to the thermodynamic reaction products. Reaction of 1 with ethanol gave a dithiobiuret derivative (3). In a proof‐ofprinciple study we show that it in turn can be used for the complexation of Ni2+ (4).

Abstract:Tridentate carborane [S, S, O] ligands 2a-2b [(HOC6H2R2-4,6)(CH2)SC(B10H10)C(Ph)2P=S, R = (t)Bu (2a), R = Me (2b)] were synthesized and characterized. Reaction of CrCl3(THF)3 with the sodium salts of ligands 2a and 2b afford six-coordinated chromium complexes 3a and 3b. EXAFS spectroscopy performed on complex 3a to describe the coordination chemistry of ligand 2a around chromium center. DFT calculations were also performed on complex 3a to analyze the structure. The preliminary screening results revealed that six-coordinated chromium complexes 3a-3b displayed good catalytic activities towards ethylene polymerization in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane. The effect of polymerization parameters such as cocatalyst, reaction temperature, ethylene pressure, and reaction time on polymerization behavior were investigated in detail. The polymer obtained from this homogeneous catalytic reaction has a fibroid morphology.

Abstract:Abstract Phase-transfer catalytic reaction involving the use of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) as catalyst and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution as the source of hydroxide ions is among the popular choices for synthesis of fullerenol, the polyhydroxylated fullerene. To further understand the process, two experiments were conducted to preliminarily explore the influences of the amount of TBAH and NaOH, respectively, in terms of the achieved level of hydroxylation (i.e. number of hydroxyl groups per fullerenol molecule). The process responded to the variation of the amount of TBAH (over a twofold series of 3–192 drops, average volume 0.0223 ± 0.0004 ml per drop) in a nonlinear manner with a local maximum achieved from 24 drops TBAH (giving 13 OH groups) and a local minimum from 48 drops (giving 8 groups). To the variation of the amount of NaOH (over the range of 0.5–8.0 ml NaOH), the fitted function of the process response resembled Freundlich adsorption isotherm, with an initially increasing trend before levelling off at 4.0 ml NaOH (giving 15 OH groups). It is therefore suggested that fullerene hydroxylation could be explained by liquid–solid adsorption. In addition, it was found that ambient carbon dioxide led to the existence of sodium carbonate in the bulk of the collected product (although not chemically bound). It was also discovered that ambient ozone adversely affected fullerenol synthesis by converting C 60 fullerene into fullerene epoxide (C 60 O). The affected syntheses thus produced epoxide-containing fullerenol instead.

Abstract:Dehydrochlorination of 1,1,2-trichloroethane (112TCE) is a widely used method for preparing vinylidene chloride (VDC), which is an important polymeric monomer and intermediate of refrigerant. However, there are few reports on kinetics of this reaction system. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculation analyses and experiments were conducted to investigate the reaction mechanism and kinetics of 112TCE dehydrochlorination with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). DFT simulation results unveiled there were three parallel reactions which produce VDC, cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (C12DE) and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene (T12DE) respectively in the reaction process of 112TCE and NaOH. The activation energy of the reaction to produce VDC was lower than those of the other two reactions. Moreover, the kinetic parameters of the three parallel reactions, such as reaction orders, rate constants, pre-exponential factors and activation energies, were experimentally obtained by decoupling the overall reaction kinetics. All the parallel reactions are bimolecular elimination reactions and the rate expression of the intrinsic kinetics for generating VDC isdCtdt=1.668×1011e-75662RTCACB. The reaction rate is three orders of magnitude higher than those of producing C12DE and T12DE, which is consistent with the DFT simulation results. These kinetics results are useful for the process optimization and reactor design in VDC production process.

Rapid yet Controlled Synthesis of 2D Covalent Organic Framework Nanocapsules as High‐Performance Photocatalytic Carriers

Abstract:Synthesis and assembly of two-dimensional (2D) polymeric materials present a tricky trade-off between the high reaction rate and precise morphology control. Here we report a nanoconfined synthesis of imine-based 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) at the interface of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion droplets stabilized by cationic surfactants. Highly uniform nanocapsules (NCs) could be prepared without adding extra catalysts at room temperature in just 4.5 h at a yield of 86%. The NCs have tunable average diameters and shell thicknesses, depending on the monomer and surfactant types/concentrations. Their BET-specific surface areas are up to 139.0 m2/g, mainly contributed by narrowly-distributed mesopores at ~5.0 nm and micropores at 1.4 nm. The surfactant plays the role of a catalyst during the reaction and interestingly, it also regulates the formation of mesopores and their sizes. Both theoretical and experimental studies confirm that the reaction has been accelerated by two orders of magnitude at the microdroplet interface, compared to that without emulsification. The resulting NCs could be well dispersed in water, and they have been demonstrated to be highly efficient nanocatalysts in application of water-based hydrogen evolution. Such microdroplet interface-confined synthesis may facilitate the future development of 2D polymeric materials for more advanced applications.
