Abstract:Reagent loading and drying conditions have been compared for alkali metal fluride (MF)–alumina supported reagents, by reaction studies and a series of analytical techniques. The reaction studies indicate that whereas a combination of low MF loadings and highly efficient drying procedures give the best reagents for catalytic reactions, somewhat higher loadings and more moderate drying conditions give the best reagents for non-catalytic reactions. The analytical studies enable some rationalisation of the reaction results as well as providing important clues concerning the nature of the active-basic species. The formation of OH– on the reagent surface cannot be entirely responsible for the high basicity of the reagents and it seems that co-ordinately unsaturated F– ions on the reagent surface play an important role in the behaviour of the reagents. High MF loadings and high drying temperatures result in significant structural damage to the reagents with resulting loss in activity.

Abstract:In this study, five aluminas were synthesized at different pH and calcination temperatures, and the surface properties and defluoridation performance of aluminas were investigated. Characterization of XRD showed that five aluminas were poorly crystallized with different phases and their anion exchange capacity and the point of zero charge varied with the species of aluminas. The batch experiments (thermodynamics, kinetics and the effect of pH) were conducted to evaluate the fluoride adsorption behavior of different aluminas. For all aluminas, both Langmiur and Freundlich models fitted the adsorption isotherms well and the calculation of thermodynamics showed that adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic; the kinetics was well described by the pseudo-second-order model and the weak acidic pH favored the fluoride adsorption. Acidity/basicity of alumina exhibited significant effect on the behaviors of adsorption and the process of ion exchange in fluoride removal. Acidic alumina exhibited higher ion exchange capacity, more positively charged surface, and better defluoridation performance (higher adsorption capacity and quicker removal of fluoride) than basic alumina. Acidic alumina also showed higher efficiency when treating natural ground water without pH adjustment. The difference in the adsorption properties was ascribed to the different exchange sites and the different behaviors of anion exchange. In the case of acidic alumina, more Cl− was exchanged with fluoride and the adsorption/release of OH− was dependent on the initial fluoride concentration. For basic alumina most of exchange sites were provided by OH− and fluoride was removed through the exchange between fluoride and OH−.

Abstract:Activated alumina (AA) with metastable crystal phase and porous structure has shown great potential for fluoride ion removal. Conventional AA is obtained by direct calcination, which limits its fluoride adsorption ability due to the low surface area and limited active sites. In this work, a highly porous AA was synthesized by a sol–gel method, followed with supercritical drying (including ethanol supercritical drying and carbon dioxide supercritical drying) and calcination. The fluoride ion adsorption properties of AA were studied at different concentrations of fluoride in solution. The Langmuir model, Freundlich model, pseudo-first-order model and pseudo-second-order model were used to describe the adsorption process. The results show that the resulting AAs possess a high porosity and a high specific surface area (up to 660 m2/g). The fluoride adsorption capacity of AA increases with the increase of specific surface area and porosity (up to 119.2 mg/g), which is much higher than that of AA prepared by the traditional method (direct calcination). Moreover, all the fitted correlation coefficients of the four models exceed 90%, indicating both chemical and physical adsorption in AA.

Abstract:Solid-state NMR methods have been used to determine the mechanism for the fluorination reaction of CHClF2 on alumina. The initial stages of fluorination lead to the formation of terminal FAl groups (i.e., fluorine bound through a single bond to an aluminum atom), which is consistent with a recent XPS report [O. Boese, W.E.S. Unger, E. Kemnitz, S.L.M. Schroeder, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 4 (2002) 2824]. 27Al NMR indicates that five-coordinate aluminum sites are initially consumed during the fluorination reaction, suggesting that the five-coordinate aluminum species are predominately localized near the surface of the high surface area (∼3–5 nm) alumina particles. The sorption of basic phosphines as probe molecules for acid sites, coupled with 31P NMR, was used to follow the changes in acidity after fluorination of the surface. The untreated alumina samples do not contain Brønsted acid sites, partial fluorination of the surface leading to their creation. In contrast, the Lewis acid sites, initially present on the untreated alumina, decrease in concentration on fluorination. Continued fluorination of the surface eventually leads to the destruction of the Brønsted acid sites, some Lewis acid sites remaining but in lower concentrations than on the initial untreated alumina.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to examine exothermic surface chemistry between alumina and four fluorinated, fragmented molecules representing species from decomposing fluoropolymers: F-, HF, CH3F, and CF4. The analysis has strong implications for the reactivity of aluminum (Al) particles passivated by an alumina shell. It was hypothesized that the alumina surface structure could be transformed due to hydrogen bonding effects from the environment that promote surface reactions with fluorinated species. In this study, the alumina surface was analyzed using model clusters as isolated systems embedded in a polar environment (i.e., acetone). The conductor-like screening model (COSMO) was used to mimic environmental effects on the alumina surface. Four defect models for specific active -OH sites were investigated including two terminal hydroxyl groups and two hydroxyl bridge groups. Reactions involving terminal bonds produce more energy than bridge bonds. Also, surface exothermic reactions between terminal -OH bonds and fluorinated species produce energy in decreasing order with the following reactant species: CF4 > HF > CH3F. Additionally, experiments were performed on aluminum powders using thermal equilibrium analysis techniques that complement the calculations. Consistently, the experimental results show a linear relationship between surface exothermic reactions and the main fluorination reaction for Al powders. These results connect molecular level reaction kinetics to macroscopic measurements of surface energy and show that optimizing energy available in surface reactions linearly correlates to maximizing energy in the main reaction.

Abstract:NaF, KF, RbF and CsF have been adsorbed onto alumina and the resulting reagents have been analysed by IR and 19F magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy. The results show that MF reacts with the alumina surface to form AlF63−, and CO32− is formed as a byproduct due to the adsorption and reaction of atmospheric CO2.

Abstract:Facile micro-emulsion methods have been developed to synthesize mesoporous Co-Al hydroxide carbonates with rodlike and hexagonal sheetlike morphologies. A series of samples with different molar ratio of cobalt/aluminum were prepared to investigate the impact of cobalt content. Employing transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier transformed infrared spectra, the morphology, structure and composition of the products were investigated. Characterized by gas-sorption measurements, the specific surface area of the calcined S-10 sample with the rodlike morphology was as high as 379 m(2)/g, which provided this material porosity properties and outstanding fluoride removal efficiency as high as 95.6%. The sorptive removal capacity of fluoride from aqueous solutions by the precursors and their corresponding annealed products was investigated in a batch mode. Abstract:Acid and base treated alumina particles were studied to assess their capacities for the adsorption of fluoride from aqueous solutions. The surface morphology of untreated alumina was analyzed by SEM and its crystal structure was checked by XRD, and was analyzed by FTIR, SEM and EDS mapping after fluoride adsorption. SEM and EDS were also used to understand the surface change of the alumina after acid and base treatment. Fluoride adsorptions at two different initial fluoride concentrations were investigated. The results show that the fluoride adsorption mainly superficially happened on the alumina particle surface. SEM images show base treatment caused the alumina particle recrystallize, while acid treatment made the alumina particle more amorphous. The adsorption capacity of acid treated alumina was about twice compared with that of alumina, while the capacity of base treated alumina was only about half of that of alumina at the solution pH=7. The high adsorption capacity of acid treated alumina makes it suitable for potential application in fluoride removal from water. © 2010 H. Wu, et al.

Abstract:The species transformation of Al and fluoride in fluoride removal by Al-based coagulation and adsorption is far from being well-characterized. This study used batch- and pilot-scale experiments to compare the fluoride removal efficiency and species transformation of Al and fluoride in Al coagulation with that in Al precipitate (AlOxHy) adsorption. Al coagulation showed superior removal of fluoride compared to AlOxHy adsorption. In the coagulation process, the formation of complexed fluoride (Com-F) occurred, and Com-F concentrations increased with elevated Al dose, i.e., lowered pH. At initial pH of 8.6, free fluoride (Free-F) dominated in the adsorption system even at the high AlOxHy dose of 200 mg Al/L whereas at pH < 7.0, Com-F was the dominant species in both systems. Fluoride had an influence on Al3+ hydrolysis and favored the transformation of Al3+ and Al-F complexes to Al F precipitates, and the removal of fluoride by coagulation was improved thereafter. Fluoride also promoted the dissolution of AlOxHy, the extent of which was more significant at lowered pH from 7.0 to 4.0 and at elevated ratios of fluoride to Al from 0.15 to 2.45. The formation of Al-F complexes impaired fluoride removal by adsorption. A pilot-scale field study also indicated that coagulation showed higher efficiency than adsorption in the removal of fluoride. The average ratios of Com-F to total fluoride were 0.14:1 and 0.04:1, respectively, in coagulation and adsorption processes. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The exposure to fluoride via drinking water is a great issue globally. This study investigates the adsorptive capability of the freshly prepared aluminum hydroxide, i.e., in-situ Al2O3·xH2O, towards fluoride. The maximum adsorption of above 110mg F/g Al is observed in pH ranges from 5.0 to 7.2. The adsorption equilibrium is achieved within 120min, and pseudo-second-order model may well describe the adsorption kinetics (R2=0.999), indicating the involvement of chemisorptions in. The characteristics of low particle diameter, high surface area, and the surface reactivity of the amorphous in-situ Al2O3·xH2O enables its superior to remove fluoride for the in-situ Al2O3·xH2O. pH impacts the distribution of Al species and the quantity of solid-state Al available for fluoride. The ratios of monomeric Al, i.e., Ala, are below 4% in pH from 6 to 8, and then increase to 19.2% at pH 4 and to 28.9% at pH 10. Alc, showing adverse trends to Ala, is the main species for fluoride removal. In cases that the amount of in-situ Al2O3·xH2O available is the same, surface charge is dominant to affect the removal of fluoride. FTIR indicates the replacement of surface hydroxyl groups by fluoride.
Insights into the mechanism of fluoride adsorption over different crystal phase alumina surfaces

Abstract:Activated alumina is the most common adsorbent for purifying fluoride in water, however, little is known so far about the adsorption mechanisms and comparison of adsorption behaviors for F on different crystal phase alumina surfaces, which seriously obstacles the development of high-performance sorbents. Herein, employing the density functional theory approach, we have studied F adsorbed on α-Al2O3(0001), γ-Al2O3(110), and θ-Al2O3(010) surfaces. Results accentuate that the θ-Al2O3 (010) is the most reactive than ɑ-Al2O3 (0001) and γ-Al2O3 (110) for F adsorption and the high reactivity is mainly attributed to the high unsaturation level of Al atoms. Detailly, the most stable adsorption sites are top of Al1 site, bridge of Al6 and adjacent Al atom, and bridge of AlⅢ atoms for α, γ, θ-alumina, respectively. The bonding picture shows that the bonding between F and alumina surface is attributed to the hybridization between F-p orbitals and Al-s,p orbitals. In addition, the alumina surfaces are hydroxylated with water molecules when exposing to the atmosphere, exhibiting a great impact on the performance of purifying F element. Results suggest that the hydroxylated θ-Al2O3 (010) adsorbs F with the smallest adsorption energy than other hydroxylated alumina surfaces, exhibiting the lowest performance of purifying F element.

Abstract:Electrostatic and complexation effects have been considered as the primary adsorption mechanisms for defluorination using aluminum based materials, while the effect of ion exchange between anions and fluorine ion has been mostly ignored, although synthesized alumina materials usually contain a large amount of anions, such as SO42-, NO3-, and Cl-. In this study, the effect of anions exchanges and its key role on defluorination were systematically investigated for adsorption by aluminas loaded with various typical anions (SO42-, NO3- and Cl-). Experimental results showed that SO42-- loading alumina had the best defluorination performance (94.5 mg/g), much higher than NO3- (45.0 mg/g) and Cl- (19.1 mg/g). The contribution ratio of ion exchange between SO42- and F- was as high as 20-60% in all potential defluorination mechanisms. By using Density Functional Theory calculation, the detailed mechanism revealed that the ion exchange process was mainly driven by the tridentate chelation of SO42- which reduced the exchange energy ( [Formula: see text] 4.8 eV). Our study clearly demonstrated that ion exchange between SO42- and F- is a critical mechanism in defluorination using aluminum-based materials and provides a potential alternative method to enhance the adsorption performance of modified alumina.

Separation of Excess Fluoride from Water Using Amorphous and Crystalline AlOOH Adsorbents

Abstract:Aluminum hydroxide is an effective defluoridation adsorbent; however, the poor defluoridation performance limits its wide application. In this work, amorphous and crystalline AlOOH adsorbents are synthesized through hydrolysis of Al salts, and their defluoridation performances are evaluated in terms of adsorption capacity and rate, sensitivity to pH value, and water quality after defluoridation. The defluoridation performance of AlOOH is closely related to the hydrolysis pH value, but hardly to the type of Al salts. The adsorbent can remove >95% fluoride in the first 2 min and reach adsorption equilibrium within 2 h, and the maximum defluoridation capacity is 41.9 mg/g. Furthermore, the adsorbent exhibits an excellent defluoridation efficiency at a wide pH range of 4.5–10.5. After fluoride removal, the adsorbents prepared at pH values of 6 and 7 exhibit low residual Al concentration. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirm that the fluoride removal mechanism is the ligand exchange between fluoride and hydroxyl groups. The excellent defluoridation capacity and low residual Al demonstrate that AlOOH is a potential adsorbent for fluoride separation from water.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Understanding fluoride adsorption from groundwater by alumina modified with alum using PHREEQC surface complexation model

Abstract:Fluoride is recognized as a vital ion for human and animal growth because of the critical role it plays in preventing skeletal and dental problems. However, when it is ingested at a higher concentration it can cause demineralization of teeth and bones resulting in fluorosis, therefore, the production of high-adsorptive capacity material which is also cost-effective is necessary for the treatment of fluorides. In this study, aluminium foil is valorised into alumina nanoparticles. The as-prepared alumina was modified with alum in two different ratios of 1:0.5 and 1:1 (alumina to alum w/w%) and later used as adsorbents for the removal of fluoride from groundwater. The adsorbents were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, point of zero charge and X-ray diffraction. Different factors that influence the removal efficiency of fluorides such as pH, initial concentrations, contact time and adsorbent dosage were studied and optimized using a simulated fluoride solution. The optimum conditions obtained were used to test real groundwater. The static experiment conditions were used to calibrate a PHREEQC geochemical model which was later used to simulate the fluoride sorption onto the modified alumina at different conditions. PHREEQC was also coupled with parameter estimation software to determine equilibrium constants for the surface reactions between the fluoride species and the adsorbent in a way that the simulations accurately reflect the outcomes of laboratory experiments. Isotherm studies were carried out on the adsorbents. Both Langmuir and Freundlich's non-linear models fitted well for the equilibrium data. However, with a higher coefficient of regression and low chi-square test values, the adsorption process was more of chemisorption on a monolayer surface. Kinetic studies were also carried out by using the non-linear equations from the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The pseudo-second-order model fitted well for the equilibrium data. The mechanism for the fluoride ion adsorption was also studied by the intraparticle (IP) diffusion model and was found that IP was not the rate-determining factor, and therefore the most plausible mechanism for the sorption process was ion exchange or attraction of fluoride ions to the sorbent surface. The findings obtained from this research show that readily available aluminium waste could be valorised into a useful product that could be employed in the removal of fluoride from water samples, including groundwater, that may contain too much fluoride and pose a risk to the general public's health.

Abstract:Lanthanum alginate bead is a new, highly active adsorbent. In the present study, we investigated its adsorption performance and its adsorption mechanism. The adsorption isotherm for fluoride onto lanthanum alginate bead fits the Langmuir model well, and the maximum adsorption capacity is 197.2 mg·g−1. X-ray diffraction shows the amorphous nature of lanthanum alginate bead, which allows for better accessibility to fluoride and thus better activity. Infrared spectra of lanthanum alginate bead before and after adsorption confirm its stable skeletal structure. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the dense surface structure of the adsorbent appear cracks after adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of lanthanum alginate bead is considered as an ion exchange between F− and Cl− or OH−, as verified from the adsorbent and the solution by pH effect, energy dispersive X-ray, and ion chromatography.
Fluorine in Complex Alumino-Boro-Silicate Glasses: Insight into Chemical Environment and Structure

Abstract:Fluorine incorporation into silicate glasses is important for technical fields as diverse as geophysics, extractive metallurgy, reconstructive dentistry, optical devices, and radioactive waste management.
