Abstract:Emerging evidence suggests a specialized mechanism supporting perceptual grouping of social entities. However, the stage at which social grouping is processed is unclear. Through four experiments, here we showed that participants' recognition of a visible face was facilitated by the presence of a second facing (thus forming a social grouping) relative to a nonfacing face, even when the second face was invisible. Using a monocular/dichoptic paradigm, we further found that the social grouping facilitation effect occurred when the two faces were presented dichoptically to different eyes rather than monocularly to the same eye, suggesting that social grouping relies on binocular rather than monocular neural channels. The above effects were not found for inverted face dyads, thereby ruling out the contribution of nonsocial factors. Taken together, these findings support the unconscious influence of social grouping on visual perception and suggest an early origin of social grouping processing in the visual pathway.

Abstract:The visual system has to segregate objects relevant for behavior from other objects and the background. Important cues for this segregation are Gestalt criteria, and most theories propose that these are applied in parallel across the visual field. However, recent studies have shown that grouping on the basis of colinearity and connectedness can be a serial and timeconsuming process. In the present study we investigate the difference between conditions that permit parallel contour grouping and conditions that require serial processing. We show that the detection of local colinearity is parallel process, but that the combination of local groupings into a globally coherent representation invokes a serial process.

Abstract:Proximity and feature similarity are two important determinants of perceptual grouping in vision. When viewing visual scenes conveying both grouping options simultaneously, people most usually detect proximity groups faster than similarity groups. This article demonstrates that perceptual judgments of grouping orientation guided by either proximity or contrast similarity are indicative of a sequential organization of grouping operations in the visual pathway, which lends a temporal processing advantage to proximity grouping (Experiment 1). Invoking the double-factorial paradigm, latent cognitive architecture for perceptual grouping is also investigated in a task with redundant signals (Experiment 2). Reaction time data from this task is assessed in terms of the race model inequality, workload capacity analysis, and interaction contrasts of means and survivor functions. Again, empirical benchmarks indicate serial processing of proximity groups and similarity groups, with a self-terminating stopping rule for processing. A subset of participants exhibit atypical performance metrics, hinting at possible individual differences in configural visual processing.

Abstract:In two experiments we investigated the behavioral and brain correlates of the interactions between spatial-proximity and texture-similarity grouping principles in touch. We designed two adaptations of the repetition discrimination task (RDT) previously used in vision. This task provides an indirect measure of grouping that does not require explicit attention to the grouping process. In Experiment 1, participants were presented with a row of elements alternating in texture except for one pair in which the same texture was repeated. The participants had to decide whether the repeated texture stimuli (similarity grouping) were smooth or rough, while the spatial proximity between targets and distractors was varied either to facilitate or hinder the response. In Experiment 2, participants indicated which cohort (proximity grouping) contained more elements, while texture-similarity within and between cohorts was modified. The results indicated additive effects of grouping cues in which proximity dominated the perceptual grouping process when the two principles acted together. In addition, the independent component analysis (ICA) performed on electrophysiological data revealed the implication of a widespread network of sensorimotor, prefrontal, parietal and occipital brain areas in both experiments.

Abstract:Psychophysical research showed that detection of an oriented visual target is facilitated when the target is grouped with collinear visual flankers. However, this collinear grouping effect is evident only when the flankers are attended. This study examined neural mechanisms underlying the interaction between attention and grouping by collinearity. Event-related potentials were recorded from study participants who judged whether oriented Gabor patches (i.e. visual elements consisting of a sinusoidal contrast modulation convolved with a Gaussian function) along the cued orientation were collinear or orthogonal. Event-related potentials showed an enhanced negativity over the posterior occipital cortex at 48-72 ms when collinear patches were congruent rather than incongruent with the cued orientation. A negative shift between 260 and 380 ms was observed over the occipital- parietal areas in the congruent rather than incongruent conditions. The long-latency effect, however, was evident only when the collinear patches were allocated along 45 degrees. The event-related potential results suggest that the interaction between attention and collinear grouping may take place as early as in the primary visual cortex and is independent of global orientations of perceptual groups.(c) 2005 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Abstract:Two experiments investigated the neural mechanisms of Gestalt grouping by recording high-density event-related brain potentials (ERPs) during discrimination tasks. In Experiment 1, stimulus arrays contained luminance-defined local elements that were either evenly spaced or grouped into columns or rows based on either proximity or similarity of shape. Proximity grouping was indexed by a short-latency positivity (110-120 ms) over the medial occipital cortex and a subsequent right occipitoparietal negativity. Grouping by similarity was reflected only in a long-latency occipitotemporal negativity. In Experiment 2, proximity grouping was examined when local elements were defined by motion cues, and was again associated with a medial occipital positivity. However, the subsequent long-latency negativity was now enhanced over the left posterior areas. The implications of these results to the neural substrates subserving different grouping processes are discussed.

Abstract:Discriminating material changes from illumination changes is a key function of early vision. Luminance cues are ambiguous in this regard, but can be disambiguated by co-incident changes in colour and texture. Thus, colour and texture are likely to be given greater prominence than luminance for object segmentation, and better segmentation should in turn produce stronger grouping. We sought to measure the relative strengths of combined luminance, colour and texture contrast using a suprathreshhold, psychophysical grouping task. Stimuli comprised diagonal grids of circular patches bordered by a thin black line and contained combinations of luminance decrements with either violet, red, or texture increments. There were two tasks. In the Separate task the different cues were presented separately in a two-interval design, and participants indicated which interval contained the stronger orientation structure. In the Combined task the cues were combined to produce competing orientation structure in a single image. Participants had to indicate which orientation, and therefore which cue was dominant. Thus we established the relative grouping strength of each cue pair presented separately, and compared this to their relative grouping strength when combined. In this way we observed suprathreshold interactions between cues and were able to assess cue dominance at ecologically relevant signal levels. Participants required significantly more luminance and colour compared to texture contrast in the Combined compared to Separate conditions (contrast ratios differed by about 0.1 log units), showing that suprathreshold texture dominates colour and luminance when the different cues are presented in combination.
Summation of texture segregation across orientation and spatial frequency: electrophysiological and psychophysical findings

Abstract:Objects are usually segregated from ground by several visual dimensions. We studied texture segregation in checkerboards defined by gradients in spatial frequency, orientation or both frequency and orientation, using Gabor-filtered noise patterns. Saliency was measured electrophysiologically using the visual evoked potential (VEP) associated with texture segregation ('tsVEP') (an associated component in the visual evoked potential), and psychophysically by a 2AFC task. Spatial frequency and orientation stimuli evoked percepts of texture segregation and tsVEPs in all 11 subjects. The tsVEPs to combined stimuli were larger than those to each dimension alone, but smaller (74%) than the algebraic sum of tsVEPs to both individual dimensions. Psychophysical detection rates differed significantly between all conditions (P < 0.001), with highest rates for the combined stimuli. The findings suggest that segregation based on a combination of 'orientation' and 'spatial frequency' is more salient than that based on either of these alone. The significant deviation from full additivity in the tsVEPs suggests that simultaneous contrasts in spatial frequency and orientation have a common processing stage.

Abstract:Human faces and bodies are environmental stimuli of special importance that the brain processes with selective attention and a highly specialized visual system. It has been shown recently that the human brain also has dedicated networks for perception of pluralities of human bodies in synchronous motion or in face-to-face interaction. Here we show that a plurality of human bodies that are merely in close spatial proximity are automatically integrated into a coherent perceptual unit. We used an EEG frequency tagging technique allowing the dissociation of the brain activity related to the component parts of an image from the activity related to the global image configuration. We presented to participants images of two silhouettes flickering at different frequencies (5.88 vs. 7.14 Hz). Clear response at these stimulation frequencies reflected response to each part of the dyad. An emerging intermodulation component (7.14 + 5.88 = 13.02 Hz), a nonlinear response regarded as an objective signature of holistic representation, was significantly enhanced in the (typical) upright relative to an (altered) inverted position. Moreover, the inversion effect was significant for the intermodulation component but not for the stimulation frequencies, suggesting a trade-off between the processing of the global dyad configuration and that of the structural properties of the dyad elements. Our results show that when presented with two humans merely in close proximity the perceptual visual system will bind them. Hence the perception of the human form might be of a fundamentally different nature when it is part of a plurality.
Facilitation of Contrast Detection by Cross-Oriented Surround Stimuli and Its Psychophysical Mechanisms.

Abstract:Neurophysiological and psychophysical evidence indicates that neuronal surround modulation at cross-orientation (orthogonal to the preferred orientation of the classical receptive field) plays a key role in intermediate-level visual tasks, such as textural segregation and perceptual pop-out. What is missing is a psychophysical description of cross surround modulation at the spatial filter level in low-level vision. Moreover, neurophysiological evidence for how cross surround modulation is expressed at the neuronal level has been inconsistent. Here we report evidence for psychophysical facilitation of contrast detection by cross surround stimuli (orthogonal to the target orientation) that may provide insights into both the neurophysiology and psychophysics of cross surround modulation. We found that cross surround facilitation is a surround-contrast dependent effect mainly evident at low surround contrasts, and is narrowly tuned to spatial frequency and broadly tuned to orientation. To understand whether cross surround facilitation results from low-level processing of signal-to-noise enhancement or is due to uncertainty reduction at a higher-level decision stage, we (1) studied cross surround facilitation with an equivalent noise protocol, (2) estimated the changes in the slope of the psychometric function and the uncertainty parameter, M, and (3) measured cross surround effects at the dipper of the TvC function. The converging evidence suggests that cross surround facilitation of contrast detection is mainly a result of low-level signal-to-noise enhancement, and is little affected by uncertainty change.
Luminance spatial frequency differences facilitate the segmentation of superimposed textures

Abstract:Do superimposed textures segregate on the basis of a difference in their luminance spatial frequency? We addressed this question using orientation-gratings, which consist of dense arrays of Gabor micropatterns whose orientations vary sinusoidally across space. Two orientation gratings of the same texture spatial frequency were combined in anti-phase, to produce a 'dual-modulation' orientation grating. Thresholds for detecting the dual-modulation gratings were measured as a function of the difference in Gabor spatial frequency between the two grating components. When the two components were made from the same Gabors, thresholds were relatively high. However a one octave difference in Gabor spatial frequency between the components caused thresholds to fall close to those of single-modulation orientation gratings. The fall in threshold was accompanied by a change in appearance of the stimulus; to that of two transparent, interwoven, flow patterns. We show that these results are incompatible with current Filter-Rectify-Filter models of 'second-order' pattern detection. Rather, they favour the idea that feature analysis precedes texture analysis, with the visual system encoding local orientation content prior to the texture stage.
Interactions Between Proximity and Similarity Grouping: an Event-Related Brain Potential Study in Humans.

Abstract:The current work examined neural substrates underlying interactions between two types of Gestalt grouping by recording event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Subjects were presented with stimulus arrays in which local circles and squares were grouped into columns or rows. The cues dominating grouping (proximity and similarity) were either congruent or incongruent. Subjects responded faster to the identification of orientations of perceptual groups based on proximity than similarity cues. Responses were slowed by incongruent cues and this effect was larger in the similarity than proximity conditions. Proximity grouping generated enhanced positivity over the posterior occipital cortex between 100 and 140 ms relative to similarity grouping. Relative to congruent grouping cues, incongruent cues elicited enlarged positivity over the temporal-parietal areas between 180 and 220 ms only in the similarity condition, but generated smaller P3 amplitudes with longer latencies in both proximity and similarity conditions. The results provide ERP indices of the dominance of proximity over shape similarity in guiding perceptual grouping when two grouping principles are present in stimulus displays.

Abstract:In this work, perceptual organization has been studied with the same spirit and phenomenological methods used by Gestalt psychologists. This was accomplished through new conditions that cannot be explained in terms of the classical principles of grouping. Perceptual grouping represents the way through which our visual system builds integrated elements on the basis of the maximal homogeneity among the components of the stimulus pattern. Our results demonstrated the inconsistency of organization by grouping, and more importantly, the inconsistency of the principle of similarity. On the contrary, they suggested the unique role played by the principle of dissimilarity among elements that behaves like an accent or a visual emphasis within a whole. The principle of accentuation was here considered as imparting a directional structure to the elements and to the whole object thus creating new phenomena. The salience of the resulting phenomena reveals the supremacy of dissimilarity in relation to similarity and the fact that it belongs to a further organization dynamics that we called "coupling." In biology, coupling and its principle of accentuation are very strongly related to disruptive camouflage. Moreover, they are source of sexual attraction. They advertise the presence and elicit species identification/communication. In human beings accentuation is needed to show ourselves to others, to understand the way we dress, choose, and create clothes or invent fashion, the way we change our body accentuating several parts and hiding some others, the way we use maquillage. The existence of maquillage itself is derived from the need to accentuate something with the purpose to increase sexual attraction, to exhibit physical strength and beauty, to show or hide social status (e.g., being the king, a warrior, a priest, etc.). Last but not least, accentuation plays a basic role also in making it easier or difficult to read and understand written words.

Uniform Connectedness And The Classical Gestalt Principles Of Grouping

Abstract:Purpose. To investigate with quantitative measure, rather than simple demonstration, whether uniform connectedness(UC), a possible new principle of perceptual organization(Palmer & Rock, 1994), operates prior to and can overcome the classical principles of grouping. Methods. The visual stimuli were large letters "H" and "E" composed of small circles. In Exp. 1, the circles were respectively grouped by proximity, similarity(the circles were embedded in a background made up of small squares), or both UC and one of the above two factors. In Exp. 2, the circles were grouped by proximity, similarity, or segregated into two parts by UC under the above two conditions. RTs to the classification of "H" vs. "E" were recorded. Results. The classification of stimuli based on similarity was slowest in both experiments and was speeded up by grouping the small circles with UC. The classification of stimuli based on proximity was, however, neither speeded up by adding UC to group the small circles nor slowed down by the segregation of the circles into two parts with UC. Conclusion. These results indicated that similarity operates after UC, but proximity does not. Both grouping physically connected components by UC and grouping physically separate components by proximity as a perceptual co-nnected whole share the same mechanism of perceptual connectivity which reflects early topological perception in tolerance space(Chen, 1982).
Psychophysical Evidence for Competition Between Real and Illusory Contour Processing

Abstract:Luminance defined and illusory contours provide vital information about object borders. However, real and illusory contour cues tend to be used under different contexts and can interfere with one another. Although some cells in visual cortex process both real and illusory contours equivalently, recent studies (Ramsden et al 2001) suggest competitive interactions between real (feedforward) and illusory (feedback) contour processing in primate V1 and V2. To test this hypothesis psychophysically, we designed stimuli in which illusory contours are presented with and without the presence of real line components. If real and illusory contour cues are processed by the same mechanism, then the presence of both cues should enhance the percept. If the illusory percept is degraded by the presence of real lines, then independent real and illusory mechanisms are suggested. The perception of a Kanisza-triangle, presented for 250 msec, was measured under three conditions: 1) virtual contour alone, 2) with a short parallel real line superimposed on the virtual contour or 3) with a short orthogonal real line abutting the virtual contour. The real lines were varied from sub- to supra-threshold contrasts. In a 2AFC paradigm three subjects fixated on a spot in the triangle center and indicated whether the side of the triangle was bent outwards or inwards. We found that real lines degraded the percept of the illusory contour (i.e. increased angular thresholds). Such interference occurred even at subthreshold real line contrasts and, in some subjects, was greater for the parallel than orthogonal real line. Our results support the presence of separate mechanisms for the processing of real and illusory contours and suggest that, under some circumstances, real cues can interfere with the processing of illusory cues. We suggest that such interferences occurs by the feedforward influences of the lines which interfere with the feedback influences prominent during illusory contour processing. NEI, Packard Foundation

Abstract:Behavioral studies suggest that perceptual grouping by proximity occurs earlier than grouping by similarity. This notion is supported by recent electrophysiological evidence that proximity grouping generates earlier occipital activation relative to grouping by shape similarity. The current work further investigated neural substrates that differentiate grouping by proximity and grouping by colour similarity by recording high density event related potentials. Subjects discriminated perceptual groups defined by either proximity or colour similarity. Proximity grouping resulted in short-latency modulations of medial occipital activity followed by longer latency modulations in the occipito-parietal cortex. Grouping by colour similarity, however, produced only long-latency occipito-temporal modulations. The results support the proposal that grouping by proximity and grouping by similarity have neural substrates over distinct time courses and cortical areas.
A visual evoked potential correlate of global figure-ground segmentation

Abstract:Human observers discriminated the global orientation of a texture-defined figure which segregated from a texture surround. Global figure discriminability was manipulated through within-figure collinearity, figure-surround interaction, and figure connectedness, while the local orientation contrast at edges between figure and surround was kept constant throughout all the experiments. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded during onset-offset stimulation in which the figure cyclically appeared and disappeared from a uniform texture background. A difference component was obtained by subtraction of offset-from onset-VEP. Two negative peaks of the difference component are found with latencies around 140-160 and 200-260 ms, respectively. Enhanced discriminability of the global figure reduced (11-25 ms) the latency of the second peak, hence indicating that the 200-260 ms component was produced by global figure-ground segmentation.
Pre–attentive Segmentation and Correspondence in Stereo

Abstract:Traditional stereo grouping models have focused on the problem of stereo correspondence between monocular inputs. Recent physiological data revealed that the disparity selective V2 cells increase their responses when (random-dot stereograms) stimuli within their receptive fields are at or near the boundary of a depth surface. Such highlights to depth (non-luminance) edges are seemingly not computationally required for the correspondence problem. Computationally, these highlights make the boundaries of a depth surface more salient, serving pre-attentive segmentation (between depth planes) and attracting visual attention. In special cases, they enable the psychophysically observed perceptual pop-out of a target from a background of visually identical distractors at a different depth. To achieve the highlights, mutual inhibition between disparity selective cells that are tuned to the same or similar depths is required. However, such mutual inhibition would impede the computation for the correspondence problem, which requires mutual excitation between the same cells. In this work, I introduce a computational model that, I believe, is the first to address both stereo correspondence and pre-attentive stereo segmentation. The computational mechanisms in the model are based on intracortical interactions in V2. I will demonstrate that the model captures the following physiological and psychophysical phenomena: (i) depth-edge highlighting; (ii) disparity capture; (iii) pop-out; and (iv) transparency.
Visual cortical mechanisms of perceptual grouping: interacting layers, networks, columns, and maps

Abstract:The visual cortex has a laminar organization whose circuits form functional columns in cortical maps. How this laminar architecture supports visual percepts is not well understood. A neural model proposes how the laminar circuits of V1 and V2 generate perceptual groupings that maintain sensitivity to the contrasts and spatial organization of scenic cues. The model can decisively choose which groupings cohere and survive, even while balanced excitatory and inhibitory interactions preserve contrast-sensitive measures of local boundary likelihood or strength. In the model, excitatory inputs from lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) activate layers 4 and 6 of V1. Layer 6 activates an on-center off-surround network of inputs to layer 4. Together these layer 4 inputs preserve analog sensitivity to LGN input contrasts. Layer 4 cells excite pyramidal cells in layer 2/3, which activate monosynaptic long-range horizontal excitatory connections between layer 2/3 pyramidal cells, and short-range disynaptic inhibitory connections mediated by smooth stellate cells. These interactions support inward perceptual grouping between two or more boundary inducers, but not outward grouping from a single inducer. These boundary signals feed back to layer 4 via the layer 6-to-4 on-center off-surround network. This folded feedback joins cells in different layers into functional columns while selecting winning groupings. Layer 6 in V1 also sends top-down signals to LGN using an on-center off-surround network, which suppresses LGN cells that do not receive feedback, while selecting, enhancing, and synchronizing activity of those that do. The model is used to simulate psychophysical and neurophysiological data about perceptual grouping, including various Gestalt grouping laws.

Abstract:Anticipating physical contact with objects in the environment is a key component of efficient motor performance. Peripersonal neurons are thought to play a determinant role in these predictions by enhancing responses to touch when combined with visual stimuli in peripersonal space (PPS). However, recent research challenges the idea that this visuo-tactile integration contributing to the prediction of tactile events occurs strictly in PPS. We hypothesised that enhanced sensory sensitivity in a multisensory context involves not only contact anticipation but also heightened attention towards near-body visual stimuli. To test this hypothesis, Experiment 1 required participants to respond promptly to tactile (probing contact anticipation) and auditory (probing enhanced attention) stimulations presented at different moments of the trajectory of a (social and non-social) looming visual stimulus. Reduction in reaction time as compared to a unisensory baseline was observed from an egocentric distance of around 2 m (inside and outside PPS) for all multisensory conditions and types of visual stimuli. Experiment 2 tested whether these facilitation effects still occur in the absence of a multisensory context, i.e., in a visuo-visual condition. Overall, facilitation effects induced by the looming visual stimulus were comparable in the three sensory modalities outside PPS but were more pronounced for the tactile modality inside PPS (84 cm from the body as estimated by a reachability judgement task). Considered together, the results suggest that facilitation effects induced by visual looming stimuli in multimodal sensory processing rely on the combination of attentional factors and contact anticipation depending on their distance from the body.
