Abstract:The general principle on ordered sets in nonlinear analysis by H. Brezis and F.E. Browder and its generalizations have been widely used in many science fields. Nevertheless, the ordered sets in the above theorems must be required to satisfy anti - symmetry. But in many fields such as pure and applied mathematics, especialy in economics, some ordering structures don't satisfy the antisymmetry. In this paper, we first propose an incomplete preference in which the anti- symmetry may not hold,and then obtain many maximal element theorems with respect to incomplete preference. As applications, we improve the general principle on ordered sets by H.Brezis and F. E. Browder and its generalizations, and give a new minimum theorem which generalizes Weierstrass's theorem.

Abstract:This paper is first concerned with one kind of discrete-time stochastic optimal control problem with convex control domains, for which necessary condition in the form of Pontryagin's maximum principle and sufficient condition of optimality are derived. The results are then extended to two kinds of discrete-time stochastic games. Two illustrative examples are studied, for which the explicit optimal strategies are given. This paper establishes a rigorous version of discrete-time stochastic maximum principle in a clear and concise way and paves a road for further related topics.

Abstract:Traditionally, the time domains that are widely used in mathematical descriptions are limited to real numbers for the case of continuous-time optimal control problems or to integers for the case of discrete-time optimal control problems. In this paper, based on a family of "needle variations", we derive maximum principle for optimal control problem on time scales. The results not only unify the theory of continuous and discrete optimal control problems but also conclude problems involving time domains in partly continuous and partly discrete ingredients. A simple optimal control problem on time scales is discussed in detail. Meanwhile, the results also unify the theory of some hybrid systems, for example, impulsive systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a stochastic optimal control problem under a type of consistent convex expectation dominated by G-expectation. By the separation theorem for convex sets, we get the representation theorems for this convex expectation and conditional convex expectation. Based on these results, we obtain the variational equation for cost functional by weak convergence and discretization methods. Furthermore, we establish the maximum principle which is sufficient under usual convex assumptions. Finally, we study the linear quadratic control problem by using the obtained maximum principle.

Abstract:This paper develops a sufficient stochastic maximum principle for a stochastic optimal control problem, where the state process is governed by a continuous-time Markov regime-switching jump-diffusion model. We also establish the relationship between the stochastic maximum principle and the dynamic programming principle in a Markovian case. Applications of the stochastic maximum principle to the mean-variance portfolio selection problem are discussed.

Abstract:This article is concerned with a partially observed optimal control problem derived by stochastic differential equations. One of novel features is that both the state equation and the cost functional are of mean-field type, which results in the problem time inconsistent in the sense that dynamic programming does not hold. Two maximum principles for optimality are obtained using Girsanov theorem, convex variation and approximation of smooth functions. A cash management model is worked out and is explicitly solved by virtue of the maximum principle and stochastic filtering.

Abstract:Maximin fairness is the ideal that the worst-off group (or individual) should be treated as well as possible. Literature on maximin fairness in various decision-making settings has grown in recent years, but theoretical results are sparse. In this paper, we explore the challenges inherent to maximin fairness in combinatorial optimization. We begin by showing that (1) optimal maximin-fair solutions are bounded by non-maximin-fair optimal solutions, and (2) stochastic maximin-fair solutions exceed their deterministic counterparts in expectation for a broad class of combinatorial optimization problems. In the remainder of the paper, we use the special case of Max-Cut to demonstrate challenges in defining and implementing maximin fairness.

Abstract:In decision-making, maxitive functions are used for worst-case and best-case evaluations. Maxitivity gives rise to a rich structure that is well-studied in the context of the pointwise order. In this article, we investigate maxitivity with respect to general preorders and provide a representation theorem for such functionals. The results are illustrated for different stochastic orders in the literature, including the usual stochastic order, the increasing convex/concave order, and the dispersive order.

Abstract:Within the framework of the cumulative prospective theory of Kahneman and Tversky, this paper considers a continuous-time behavioral portfolio selection problem whose model includes both running and terminal terms in the objective functional. Despite the existence of S-shaped utility functions and probability distortions, a necessary condition for optimality is derived. The results are applied to various examples.

Abstract:We investigate a stochastic optimal control problem where the controlled system is depicted as a stochastic differential delayed equation; however, at the terminal time, the state is constrained in a convex set. We firstly introduce an equivalent backward delayed system depicted as a time-delayed backward stochastic differential equation. Then a stochastic maximum principle is obtained by virtue of Ekeland's variational principle. Finally, applications to a state constrained stochastic delayed linear-quadratic control model and a production-consumption choice problem are studied to illustrate the main obtained result.

Abstract:Motivated by a duopoly game problem, the authors study an optimal control problem where the system is driven by Brownian motion and Poisson point process and has elephant memory for the control variable and the state variable. Firstly, the authors establish the unique solvability of an anticipated backward stochastic differential equation, derive a stochastic maximum principle, and prove a verification theorem for the aforementioned optimal control problem. Furthermore, the authors generalize these results to nonzero-sum stochastic differential game problems. Finally, the authors apply the theoretical results to the duopoly game problem and obtain the corresponding Nash equilibrium solution.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a general maximum principle for discrete fractional stochastic difference system of mean‐field type. The admissible control domain is nonconvex. We give Malliavin calculus for discrete‐time case to deal with the fractional terms. The maximum principle of general type is derived by classical variation and linear operator methods. In addition, a linear‐quadratic problem is solved to illustrate the main result and we also figure out a numerical result in this case.

Abstract:A prepare-and-measure scenario is naturally described by a communication matrix that collects all conditional outcome probabilities of the scenario into a row-stochastic matrix. The set of all possible communication matrices is partially ordered via the possibility to transform one matrix to another by pre- and post-processings. By considering maximal elements in this preorder for a subset of matrices implementable in a given theory, it becomes possible to identify communication matrices of maximum utility, i.e., matrices that are not majorized by any other matrices in the theory. The identity matrix of an appropriate size is the greatest element in classical theories, while the maximal elements in quantum theory have remained unknown. We completely characterize the maximal elements in quantum theory, thereby revealing the essential structure of the set of quantum communication matrices. In particular, we show that the identity matrix is the only maximal element in quantum theory but, as opposed to a classical theory, it is not the greatest element. Quantum theory can hence be seen to be distinct from classical theory by the existence of incompatible communication matrices.

Multistage Utility Preference Robust Optimization

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a multistage expected utility maximization problem where the decision maker's utility function at each stage depends on historical data and the information on the true utility function is incomplete. To mitigate adverse impact arising from ambiguity of the true utility, we propose a maximin robust model where the optimal policy is based on the worst-case sequence of utility functions from an ambiguity set constructed with partially available information about the decision maker's preferences. We then show that the multistage maximin problem is time consistent when the utility functions are state-dependent and demonstrate with a counter example that the time consistency may not be retained when the utility functions are state-independent. With the time consistency, we show the maximin problem can be solved by a recursive formula whereby a one-stage maximin problem is solved at each stage beginning from the last stage. Moreover, we propose two approaches to construct the ambiguity set: a pairwise comparison approach and a zeta-ball approach where a ball of utility functions centered at a nominal utility function under zeta-metric is considered. To overcome the difficulty arising from solving the infinite dimensional optimization problem in computation of the worst-case expected utility value, we propose piecewise linear approximation of the utility functions and derive error bound for the approximation under moderate conditions. Finally, we use the SDDP method and the nested Benders' decomposition method to solve the multistage state-dependent preference robust problem and the scenario tree method to solve the state-independent problem, and carry out comparative analysis on the efficiency of the computational schemes as well as out-of-sample performances of the state-dependent and state-independent models.

Abstract:A new minimax model on optimal portfolio selection with uncertainty of both randomness and estimation in inputs is established and the corresponding optimal portfolio is derived analytically. Based on this result, a sufficient condition for the existence and uniqueness of a nonnegative equilibrium price system under which the total demand and supply of each asset are equal is provided and an explicit formula for such a price system is obtained. Furthermore, some properties of the equilibrium are discussed.

A Remark on Inseparability of Min&#8211 Max Systems

Abstract:Min-max systems, or min-max-plus systems are algebraic models of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems. They are non-linear extensions of the well known linear max-plus system models. The structural property 'inseparability' of min-max systems was proposed by us in a recent paper. It turns out that inseparability is equivalent to the property of 'irreducib ility' proposed recently by van der Woude and Subiono, although the two properties appear in very different forms. We will prove this fact here.
