Abstract:As a result of the fast rise in power consumption, electrical power generation in China during the past 20 years has increased at an average rate of higher than 8% per year. It is estimated that the power generation capacity in 2020 will be more than 1100 GW. Nevertheless, China is currently experiencing a shortage in the electricity Supply, and there are concerns about insufficient availability of mineral resources in the future. The fast expanding power industry has room therefore for applying new technologies, and high temperature superconductivity is one such promising energy saving and environment friendly new technology. Our analysis suggests that the price of high temperature superconductivity equipment will not be an obstacle for large scale applications. Recently, there has been increased support for R&D for high temperature superconductivity applications in China. Several projects, including production of long lengths of Bi-2223 tapes and high temperature superconducting power cables, have been successfully implemented.

Abstract:Providing appropriate power compensation is an effective way to keep the stability in power systems. superconducting magnetic energy storage control system is a new kind of power stability control device which utilizes superconductivity technology, power electronics and control theory. This opens a new way to improve power system stabilities. In order to promote the application of such control device and to further investigate the properties of the controller, a prototype of such control device was developed. In the developed prototype, the conduction cooling and the high temperature superconductive techniques are used. The performance of the device is experimentally investigated in two ways, one is an off-line power condition and the other is an on-line power system. Very encouraging results are obtained. Based on a brief introduction of the SMES control system and the principle of using such device to enhance power system stabilities, details of the configuration for the developed device are given in this paper. Test results as well as the analysis of the developed device are also given.

Abstract:It has been nearly 110 years since the discovery of superconductors, and more than 30 years since the discovery of high temperature superconductors (HTS). Great progress has been made in the application of superconducting electronics in the last two decades. HTS microwave devices have shown much higher perfomance than the traditional ones and have found their ways to the industry applications in mobile communication, radar, and special communication applications. Owing to the ultrahigh sensitivity to magnetic fields and currents, superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) have been used as the irresplacible sensors in geological surveying, magnetic resonanc imaging, biomagnetic imaging, and other areas. The sensitivity of superconducting radiation detectors such as superconducting SIS mixer, superconducting hot electron bolometer, superconducting transition edge sensor, superconducting nanowire single photon detector, and superconducting microwave kinetic inductance detector are near the quantum limitation. They are now key technology in geophysics, astrophysics, quantum information science, biomedicine, and so on. Superconducting Josephson parametric amplifier has become a key element for superconducting quantum computing. Superconducting integrated circuit has been included in the international roadmap for devices and systems, and shows that having the potential to become one of the mainstreams for post-Moore information processing technology. In metrology, superconducting Josephson effect and Josephson junction array devices have been widely used in the redefinition of quantum voltage reference and basic units of the International system of Units. Superconducting electronics plays an important role in the current quantum information technology boom, which in turn promotes the development of superconducting electronics. This review will brief introduce the research and application of superconducting electronics in China in recent years.

Abstract:Superconducting materials hold great potential to bring radical changes for electric power and high-field magnet technology , enabling high-efficiency electric power generation, high-capacity lossless electric power transmission, small light-weighted electrical equipment, high-speed maglev transportation, ultra-strong magnetic field generation for high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) systems, the future advanced high energy particle accelerators, nuclear fusion reactors and so on. The performance, economy and operating parameters (temperatures and magnetic fields) of these applications strongly depend on the electromagnetic and mechanical properties, as well as manufacturing and material cost of superconductors. This perspective examines the basic properties relevant to practical applications and key issues of wire fabrication for practical superconducting materials, and describes their challenges and current state in practical applications. Finally, future perspectives for their opportunities and development in the applications of superconducting power and magnetic technologies are given.

Abstract:The high-temperature superconducting (HTS) ac and dc cables are gradually finding their way toward commercialization due to their ability to transfer bulk electric power with negligible dielectric loss. In this context, this article critically reviews the different aspects of HTS cables used in various applications and related accessories. The operational, laboratory-scale, and prototype HTS cable projects are discussed in detail. Different dielectrics, electrical insulations, superconductors, cooling systems, cryogens, and upcoming projects of HTS cables are reviewed. The underlying challenges and future directions in ac and dc cables, electric aircraft and ships, associated costs, cryogenic insulation materials, cooling technologies, superconductors, and electrical insulations of HTS cables are discussed in detail. The space charge performance of presently used polypropylene laminated paper insulation and future insulation, i.e., Kapton material, is experimentally analyzed, to show the future challenges in the insulation design. The technology readiness level, market trends, and relevant test standards are explored. The research and market trends suggest that HTS cables can replace conventional transmission methods. However, their consistent growth and adaptation of HTS cables will depend on the design of cryocoolers, raw material cost of superconductors, and large-scale production.

Abstract:Superconducting materials, discovered in the early twentieth century, have fascinated scientists with their unique attributes. This review provides a thorough exploration of superconductivity, tailored for newcomers, aiming to be a foundational resource for future research. It traces the evolution of different superconductors, including traditional, cuprate, and non-copper oxide types, detailing their specific characteristics. Central to the review is the examination of theoretical foundations, particularly the BCS theory, and the diverse applications of superconductors in high-performance magnets, energy transmission, and quantum computing. However, the practical deployment of superconductors is limited by challenges, notably their operation at extremely low temperatures, hindering widespread use. Furthermore, economic and technical difficulties in production and maintenance persist. To advance superconductors' potential, research must focus on enhancing critical temperatures and current density and developing cost-effective manufacturing techniques. This will enable novel applications in energy, transportation, and healthcare, driving technological progress.

Abstract:This study investigates the potential impact of "LK-99," a novel material developed by a Korean research team, on the power equipment industry. Using evolutionary game theory, the interactions between governmental subsidies and technology adoption by power companies are modeled. A key innovation of this research is the introduction of sensitivity analyses concerning time delays and initial subsidy amounts, which significantly influence the strategic decisions of both government and corporate entities. The findings indicate that these factors are critical in determining the rate of technology adoption and the efficiency of the market as a whole. Due to existing data limitations, the study offers a broad overview of likely trends and recommends the inclusion of real-world data for more precise modeling once the material demonstrates room-temperature superconducting characteristics. The research contributes foundational insights valuable for future policy design and has significant implications for advancing the understanding of technology adoption and market dynamics.

Abstract:Superconducting technology applications in electric machines have long been pursued due to their significant advantages of higher efficiency and power density over conventional technology. However, in spite of many successful technology demonstrations, commercial adoption has been slow, presumably because the threshold for value versus cost and technology risk has not yet been crossed. One likely path for disruptive superconducting technology in commercial products could be in applications where its advantages become key enablers for systems which are not practical with conventional technology. To help systems engineers assess the viability of such future solutions, we present a technology roadmap for superconducting machines. The timeline considered was ten years to attain a Technology Readiness Level of 6+, with systems demonstrated in a relevant environment. Future projections, by definition, are based on the judgment of specialists, and can be subjective. Attempts have been made to obtain input from a broad set of organizations for an inclusive opinion. This document was generated through a series of teleconferences and in-person meetings, including meetings at the 2015 IEEE PES General meeting in Denver, CO, the 2015 ECCE in Montreal, Canada, and a final workshop in April 2016 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign that brought together a broad group of technical experts spanning the industry, government and academia.

Abstract:Abstract With the increase of electricity demand and the rapid development of renewable energy generation, it is becoming more and more important to ensure the safety and stability of power grid, where a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) could play an important role. In recent years, a lot of research work has been done in China on the application of high temperature superconducting (HTS) power technology, especially in the aspects of superconducting fault current limiting technology, superconducting fault current limiting-breaking technology, superconducting fault current limiting- magnetic energy storage technology, and superconducting fault current limiting transformer technology. A number of demonstration projects on SFCL were also conducted. In this paper, the research progress of HTS fault current limiters (both AC and DC) in China in recent years is introduced, including the completed projects and the on-going work. The possible application direction of SFCL in the future is proposed.

Abstract:The new power system based on renewable energy sources may bring the problems of voltage and frequency stability due to the high-level power electronic-based interfaced generation. As a reliable reactive power compensation equipment, dynamic synchronous condensers (DSCs) have the merits of short response time and high overload capacity. They can also improve the system inertia and short-circuit current capacity, and play the role of voltage and frequency stabilizer in the power system. Compared with the conventional DSCs, the superconducting DSCs have higher efficiency, stronger voltage support ability and more excellent reactive compensation performance. In 2018, a research project was launched to explore the feasibility of the superconducting DSC in power grid. The project has achieved significant progress. A hundred-kW prototype was designed and made for technical verification, and the design procedure of the 10 Mvar one is being carried out.

Abstract:The increasing commercial availability of High-T-c Superconducting (HTS) wire in the decade following the discovery of this amazing class of materials opened the door to a range of unique application opportunities. The early international focus was on the power industry with a promise of a significant transformation in efficiency and supply security; however the realities of funding large and technically demanding prototypes and the lengthy timelines involved in realistic commercialisation pathways, meant that for a small business nearer-term opportunities would need to be explored. From a background in materials research and wire development activities, HTS-110 was established over 13 years ago to design and manufacture HTS magnets for a wide range of scientific and industrial applications; over the last decade significant progress has been made in the commercialisation of HTS magnets, both by HTS-110 and other manufacturers, paralleling the improvements in wire performance and quality. In this paper we review the developments of HTS magnet technology and applications leading to a range of niche application areas, from sample environments for synchrotron and neutron beamlines and other materials analysis applications, through to developments for the demanding realm of magnetic resonance, all of which leverage the benefits of high current density relative to copper and a relatively high operating temperature compared to the low-temperature superconductors. New future application areas promise to extend these developments and greatly expand the role of HTS magnets in our industrial society.

Abstract:Superconducting materials hold great potential in high field magnetic applications compared to traditional conductive materials. At present, practical superconducting materials include low-temperature superconductors such as NbTi and Nb 3 Sn, hightemperature superconductors such as Bi-2212, Bi-2223, YBCO, iron-based superconductors and MgB 2 . The development of low-temperature superconducting wires started earlier and has now entered the stage of industrialized production, showing obvious advantages in mechanical properties and cost under low temperature and middle-low magnetic field. However, due to the insufficient intrinsic superconducting performance, low-temperature superconductors are unable to exhibit excellent performance at high temperature or high fields. Further improvement of supercurrent carrying performance mainly depends on the enhancement of pinning ability. Hightemperature superconductors have greater advantages in high temperature and high field, but many of them are still in the stage of further performance improvement. Many high-temperature superconductors are limited by the deficiency in their polycrystalline structure, and further optimization of intergranular connectivity is required. In addition, it is also necessary to further enhance their pinning ability. The numerous successful application instances of high-temperature superconducting wires and tapes also prove their tremendous potential in electric power applications.

Abstract:Superconductivity was discovered in 1911. Due to the greatly potential applications of superconducting materials and superconducting techniques, researchers from physical, chemical, and materials sciences have been working hard to achieve new superconducting materials with high superconducting transition temperature and even up to room temperature. Meanwhile, the surface/interface issue in superconducting materials has been paid more and more attention. In this paper, a brief summary is made about the previous works on the surface adsorption of copper-oxide superconductors. Then, interface effect is introduced and demonstrated to play an important role in increasing transition temperature and clarifying the superconductivity mechanism in superconducting films. The importance of the surface/interface effect is largely highlighted in the research and development of the superconducting materials.
