Abstract:The pair-binding energy of hole-doped C60 is calculated by the Gutzwiller scheme. It is found that the pairing energy of hole-doped C50 is higher than that of electron-doped C60. The implication of this difference for superconductivity is discussed.

Abstract:Going beyond both a simple perturbative theory and Hartree-Fock treatment, the Gutzwiller variational scheme is employed to clarify the possibility of electron site-pairing in doped C60. It is shown that this pairing can be induced by electron-phonon interaction rather than electron-electron interaction. Our results are supported by EPR experiments.

Abstract:Cooper pairing instability in a Fermi liquid is well understood by the BCS theory, but pairing mechanism for doped Mott insulators still remains elusive. Previously it has been shown by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method that a single doped hole is always self-localized due to the quantum destructive interference of the phase string signs hidden in the t-J ladders. Here we report a DMRG investigation of hole binding in the same model, where a novel pairing-glue scheme beyond the BCS realm is discovered. Specifically, we show that, in addition to spin pairing due to superexchange interaction, the strong frustration of the phase string signs on the kinetic energy gets effectively removed by pairing the charges, which results in strong binding of two holes. By contrast, if the phase string signs are "switched off" artificially, the pairing strength diminishes significantly even if the superexchange coupling remains the same. In the latter, unpaired holes behave like coherent quasiparticles with pairing drastically weakened, whose sole origin may be attributed to the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) pairing of spins. Such non-BCS pairing mechanism is therefore beyond the RVB picture and may shed important light on the high-T(c) cuprate superconductors.

Abstract:We study the charge profile of a C60-FET (field effect transistor) as used in the experiments of Schoen, Kloc and Batlogg. Using a tight-binding model, we calculate the charge profile treating the Coulomb interaction in a mean-field approximation. The charge profile behaves similarly to the case of a continuous space-charge layer, in particular it is confined to a single interface layer for doping higher than ~0.3 electron (or hole) per C60 molecule. The morahedral disorder of the C60 molecules smoothens the structure in the density of states.

Abstract:The tuning effects of substitutional B and N dopings on the electron transport properties of a C-60 dimer bridge [(C-60)(2)] are investigated by nonequilibrium Green's functions in combination with density functional theory. It is found that, unlike C-60, the equilibrium conductance of (C-60)(2) is very small. However, it can be controlled by electron (N) doping or hole (B) doping, which shifts the molecular energy levels so that the LUMOs or HOMOs align well with the Fermi level and results in LUMO-mediated transport or HOMO-mediated transport. The conductance increases accordingly with a certain number of N or B atoms doped in the C(60)s. Interestingly, when one C-60 is doped with N atoms and the other is doped with B atoms, new transport behaviors arise and rectification is achieved due to the special alignment of the energy levels of the individual C(60)s with the Fermi level. It suggests that cluster or molecule assembling can often realize specific functions which are not available by single molecules and should be taken into consideration in the design of molecular devices. Abstract:Band structures of C60-polymers are studied changing conjugation conditions and the electron number. We use a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger type semiempirical model. In the neutral C60-polymer, electronic structures change among direct-gap insulator and the metal, depending on the degree of conjugations. The C60-polymer doped with one electron per one molecule is always a metal. The energy difference between the highest-occupied state and the lowest-unoccupied state of the neutral system becomes smaller upon doping owing to the polaron effects. The C60-polymer doped with two electrons per one C60 changes from an indirect-gap insulator to the direct-gap insulator, as the conjugations become stronger.

Abstract:The interface electronic structure of C60/CuPc and C60 heterojunctions on SiO2 and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite has been studied using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and synchrotron based photoelectron spectroscopy. Fermi level pinned to the negative integer charge transfer state of C60 molecules on the standing CuPc film has been observed, while nearly vacuum-level alignment is observed for C60 on the lying CuPc film. We also found small vacuum-level shifts for C60 on both standing and lying F16CuPc films, which can be attributed to the rearrangement of underlying F16CuPc molecules. With the use of orientation-controlled CuPc and F16CuPc thin films, C60 highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels relative to the substrate Fermi level can be tuned from 1.9 eV for C60 on the standing CuPc film to 1.0 eV on the standing F16CuPc film.

Abstract:We have studied the effect of including nearest-neighbor, electron-electron interactions, in particular the off-diagonal (non density-density) terms, on the spectra of truncated tetrahedral and icosahedral ``Hubbard molecules,'' focusing on the relevance of these systems to the physics of doped C$_{60}$. Our perturbation theoretic and exact diagonalization results agree with previous work in that the density-density term suppresses pair-binding. However, we find that for the parameter values of interest for $C_{60}$ the off-diagonal terms {\em enhance} pair-binding, though not enough to offset the suppression due to the density-density term. We also find that the critical interaction strengths for the Hund's rules violating level crossings in C$_{60}^{-2}$, C$_{60}^{-3}$ and C$_{60}^{-4}$ are quite insensitive to the inclusion of these additional interactions.

Abstract:Exciton and excitonic polaron states in C60 molecule are studied theoretically by the tight-binding model and the extended Hubbard interaction. We find that the exciting energies of the lowest singlet and triplet excitons depend sensitively upon the electron correlation. And the excitonic polaron is formed due to the electron-lattice coupling. Relevant experiments in photo-luminescence spectrum of C60 can be explained qualitatively by the present model with moderate interaction strength U ∼ 5.0eV, and V ∼ 2.0eV in our approximation.

Abstract:We have determined the upper critical field H-c2 as a function of hole concentration in bismuth-based cuprates by measuring the voltage induced by vortex flow in a driving temperature gradient (the Nernst effect), in magnetic fields up to 45 tesla. We found that H-c2 decreased steeply as doping increased, in both single and bilayer cuprates. This relationship implies that the Cooper pairing potential displays a trend opposite to that of the superfluid density versus doping. The coherence length of the pairs xi(0) closely tracks the gap measured by photoemission. We discuss implications for understanding the doping dependence of the critical temperature T-c0.

Abstract:We consider lattice relaxation in doped C60 using the tight-binding model applied to a single C60 molecule. To simulate the dynamical evolution processes of string polaron in charged C60, we use a classical dynamical method where all the tangential collective coordinates are chosen. The nonlinear response time of lattice relaxation can be obtained in view of the present theory.

Abstract:We examine the pairing structure of holes injected into two distinct spin backgrounds: a short-range antiferromagnetic phase versus a symmetry protected topological phase. Based on density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation, we find that although there is a strong binding between two holes in both phases, phase fluctuations can significantly influence the pair-pair correlation depending on the spin-spin correlation in the background. Here the phase fluctuation is identified as an intrinsic string operator nonlocally controlled by the spins. We show that while the pairing amplitude is generally large, the coherent Cooper pairing can be substantially weakened by the phase fluctuation in the symmetry-protected topological phase, in contrast to the short-range antiferromagnetic phase. It provides an example of a non-BCS mechanism for pairing, in which the paring phase coherence is determined by the underlying spin state self-consistently, bearing an interesting resemblance to the pseudogap physics in the cuprate.

Abstract:By applying nonequilibrium Green's functions in combination with the density-functional theory, we investigate the electronic transport properties of molecular junctions constructed by C-60, C59N, and C59B. The results show that the electronic transport properties of molecular junctions can be modulated by doped atoms. Negative differential resistance behavior can be observed in a certain bias range for C-60 molecular junction but cannot be observed in C59N and C59B molecular junctions. A mechanism is proposed for the doping effect and negative differential resistance behavior.

Abstract:Variations in the band structures of C60-polymers are studied, when conjugation conditions and the electron number are changed. We use a semiempirical model with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger type electron-phonon interactions. In the neutral one-dimensional C60-polymer, electronic structures change among direct-gap insulators and the metal, depending on the degree of conjugations. High pressure experiments could observe such pressure-induced metal-insulator transitions. The C60-polymer doped with one electron per one molecule is always a metal. The energy difference between the highest-occupied state and the lowest-unoccupied state of the neutral system becomes smaller upon doping owing to the polaron effects. When the C60-polymer is doped with two electrons per one C60, the system is insulating. When the conjugation in the direction of the polymer chain is smaller, it is a direct-gap insulator. The energy gap becomes indirect when the conjugation is stronger. We also study the antiferromagnetic phase of AC60 by using a tight-binding model with long-range Coulomb interactions. The antiferromagnetism is well described by the model. The comparison with the photoemission studies shows that the new band around the Fermi energy of the AC60 phase can be explaind by the extremely large intrusion of an energy level into the gap of the neutral system. This indicates that the interaction effects among electrons are important in doped C60-polymers.

Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Endohedrally Doped Fullerene Mn@C(60): a Total Energy Study.

Abstract:We perform total energy calculations on a manganese atom encapsulated inside a C(60) cage using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation through three optimization schemes and along four paths inside the cage. We find that when Mn is located in the central region, its electronic and magnetic properties are not exactly the same as those of a free Mn atom due to weak coupling between Mn and the cage. As Mn is shifted toward to the edge, the total energy and spin start to change significantly when Mn is situated about one-third of the way between the cage center and edge, and the total energy reaches a local minimum. Finally the interaction between Mn and the cage turns repulsive as Mn approaches the edge. We also find that, along the lowest energy path, there exist three consecutive local energy minima and each of these has a different spin M. The ground state has the lowest M=3, Mn is located about 1.6 A away from the cage center, and the binding energy is 0.08 eV. We attribute the decrease in total energy and spin to Mn and C hybridization.
Pairing tendencies in the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model

Abstract:We study the impact of hole-doping on the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. We investigate the pairing tendencies and correlation functions in the framework of a $t-J-K$ model using density matrix renormalization group calculations on three-leg cylinders. In the case of the pure Kitaev model, which realizes a quantum spin-liquid phase at half-filling, we find that binding of two holes only occurs at low values of the hopping, where the holes are slow. We have theoretically verified that pair formation occurs in the limit of immobile holes, where the pure Kitaev model remains exactly solvable. When we instead fix the hopping at an intermediate, more realistic, value, and vary the Heisenberg and Kitaev interaction strengths, we find pairing tendencies only in the Néel phase. This is in contrast to prior mean-field calculations, highlighting the importance of accounting for the kinetic energy of dopants in generalized Kitaev models. Interestingly, we also find signatures of pair-density wave formation over the studied range of model parameters, namely a periodic modulation of the charge density as well as the spin-spin and pair-pair correlations in real space. Moreover, we present a comparative study of the different correlations as a function of doping. We finally discuss the potential for experimentally observing the studied physics in quantum materials and heterostructures.

Abstract:In order to study the electron doping effect on the neutral C60 dimer with the linkage through a [2+2] cycloaddition, structures of the neutral dimer and its dianion have been energetically optimized by the semiempirical Hamiltonian PM-3, The (C60)22− has turned out to have a slightly squashed and equatorially swollen geometry in each C60 compared to the structure of the (C60)2. But both have the same symmetry of D2h. The doped electrons in the dianion will be largely on an equator zone of each C60 ball. The intermolecular center-to-center distance is longer by about 0.03 angstrom in the C60 dimer dianion than in its neutral case.

Abstract:With the discovery of Tc s over 100K, continuously biased hole-doped semiconductive C60+y has joined the family of high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) previously dominated by the ceramic cuprates. The phase diagrams of these two quite different materials are remarkably similar, despite the absence from undoped C60+y of magnetic order. This supports percolative models of HTSC based on strong electron-phonon interactions. These models explain observed fine structure in the C60+y phase diagrams, and furthermore suggest novel paths to still higher Tc s.

Abstract:Momentum distributions,electron density distribution and other basic properties of the highest occupied molecular orbitals(HOMOs,176-180) of C_(60) have been studied using density functional theory(DFT) method in its ground electronic state.The DFT B3LYP/6-311++G model generated orbital wavefunctions in coordinate space are transformed into momentum space using plane wave impulse approximation(PWIA) for the HOMOs as orbital momentum distributions(MDs).It is found that all the HOMOs are π-like orbitals with the C_(60) sphere as the nodal sphere(zero density on the sphere);the five energy degenerate MOs are divided into two groups: MOs 176,178 and 180 as one group,and MOs 177 and 179 as the other group.It is also found that the five HOMOs are not differentiable by their energies and orbital momentum distributions.

Abstract:Superconductivity is usually described in the framework of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) wavefunction, which even includes the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) wavefunction proposed for the high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprate. A natural question is if any fundamental physics could be possibly missed by applying such a scheme to strongly correlated systems. Here we study the pairing wavefunction of two holes injected into a Mott insulator/antiferromagnet in a two-leg ladder using variational Monte Carlo approach. By comparing with density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation, we show that a conventional BCS or RVB pairing of the doped holes makes qualitatively wrong predictions and is incompatible with the fundamental pairing force in the t-J model, which is kinetic-energy driven by nature. By contrast, a non-BCS-like wavefunction incorporating such novel effect will result in a substantially enhanced pairing strength and improved ground state energy as compared to the DMRG results. We argue that the non-BCS form of such a new ground state wavefunction is essential to describe a doped Mott antiferromagnet at finite doping.

Abstract:We have performed first principles density functional theory method simulations on electronic structures of B, N, Co, P, and Bi doped C60 solids. Our electronic structure simulations show that boron, phosphorous, and cobalt doped face-centered cubic (FCC) C60 solids have the electronic structures of n-type semiconductors. Nitrogen doped FCC C60 solid has an electronic structure similar to those of a p-type semiconductor. P doped C60 is a potential good candidate in thermoelectric application. For Bi doped C60, a transformation from n-type to p-type semiconductor and gradually to metal, which corresponding to the Bi:C60 dopant ratio at 1:60, 2:60, and 3:60, respectively, can be seen from our electronic density of states (DOS) analysis. There are volume contraction and charge transfer increasing in the 2:60 of Bi doped C60 results compared with those of 1:60 Bi doped C60 case. The charge transfer at a tetrahedral site is as three times larger as that of octahedral site. For the concentration of Bi doped C60 higher than 3:60, the system is expected to be a superconductor.
