Abstract:The “Chinese Dream” has existed as a combination of Chinese characters for more than 700 years, however its connotation varies in different social development stages. At the beginning of the 20th century, Chinese intellectuals began to look for the “Chinese Dream”. In the 1980s, the cultural community regained the “Chinese Dream”. After entering the new century, all sectors of society deeply discussed the “Chinese Dream”. The development and evolution of the concept of this phrase actually reflected the vicissitudes of Chinese society in the past century. The “Chinese Dream” we are talking about today is closely linked with the limiting phrase “realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation”, proposed by the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping in 2012. The “Chinese Dream” is no longer a common word combination in modern Chinese, but a core concept of the ideological system of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, which has been given a new and profound meaning. The “Chinese Dream” has become a cultural symbol, which will be integrated into the development history of Chinese civilization and coexist with the ever-growing Chinese culture.

Abstract:As the focus in the layout of self-made content on the Internet, network variety shows are different from traditional TV variety shows in the aspects of production logic and application scenarios, which makes them burst out more possibilities in content production, marketing and promotion. Compared with the traditional talent shows, the network talent shows with the narrative mode of "idol cultivation" focus on the process of "cultivation" and actively create star idols in line with the mainstream values, so as to realize the successful transformation of core values from "overnight fame" to "being worth teaching". According to the value and law of content production endowed by the Internet era, this new narrative mode not only facilitates the deep involvement of the audience in the program, but also cultivates a new type of talent show suitable for the characteristics of the Internet era based on the changes of the programming and broadcasting carrier. Abstract:As a value concept, a development goal and a spiritual drive, the proposal of the China Dream breathes new life into the international communication of China; it is a new opportunity for the external communication of China. In comparison with its recognition at home, the external communication of the China Dream still has great room for improvement. The study analysed the texts and content of related articles as found in The Washington Post and on CNN and uncovered the status quo and inadequacy of the current external communication of the China Dream, based on which corresponding strategies and recommendations were proposed from the following three macroscopic perspectives: theory and policy, media construction and support and think-tank resource construction. It is hoped that seizing the favourable trend of the currently continuously rising international status of China, the voice and image of China may be communicated to the world, and consequently, the soft power of China may be realistically enhanced.

Abstract:The Chinese Dream is the most important national narrative in Chinese political discourse. Existing studies have mainly focused on its political implications or diplomatic influences. However, limited study has been done to examine the narrative structure and mythic natures of the Chinese Dream. This study provides a cross-cultural analysis of the Chinese Dream narrative, revealing the significant role of the collective hero and the dynamics of a dual protagonist that are deep-rooted in the Chinese cultural and historical context. The analysis of the Chinese Dream has important implications for understanding the significance of cultural dimensions in narrative criticism.

Abstract:This paper primarily explores the manner in which China’s reality talent shows have rearticulated dream narratives surrounding the Chinese Dream political discourse. This has occurred in response to common perceptions of such shows as vulgar or culturally inappropriate, which themselves were a consequence of the post-2005 boom in popularity of Super Girl Voice. My analysis is contextualised within the ideological connotations of the Chinese Dream, and falls into three main sections. The first section investigates the discursive strategy of the Chinese Dream, which can be said to integrate Confucianism and nationalism into the framework of a neoliberal market so as to emphasise the consistency between national and individual dreams, as well as the important and positive aspects of market values in the socialist agenda of public affairs. The second and third parts examine a public interest talent show called Chinese Dream Show. Through a discourse analysis of this talent show, I argue that the show is neoliberal theatre with Chinese characteristics, wherein a discursive formula I call ‘public interest’ employs two intertwined discursive systems – neoliberal rationality and sentimentality – to narrate dream-realising stories that satisfy the needs of both political correctness and market interests.

Abstract:The "Chinese-style variety show", of which the classic Chinese traditional culture is regarded as the main content, is classified as a cultural variety show, what has been an important TV program type on the screen in recent years. This study cites the crossmedia narrative theory as an important theoretical support to analyze the path to reshape traditional Chinese classics in TV variety shows. This study found that TV variety shows mainly use the methods of "centrifugal narration" and "centripetal narration" to design different themes around "Chinese style variety shows", as this kind of TV program mainly adopts the flexible narrative methods to complete the remodeling of traditional Chinese classics.
