Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:In this paper, we give a unified generalization of the Gini means and Heronian means. The Schur-geometric convexity of the generalized Gini-Heronian means are investigated. Our result generalizes an earlier result given by Shi et al. (J. Inequal. Appl. 2008:879273, 2008). At the end of the paper, two new inequalities related to the generalized Gini-Heronian means are established to illustrate the applicability of the given result. MSC: 26D15, 26E60, 26A51.

The existence results of the solution, convexity of the solution set, and the convergence property of the proximal point algorithm for the variational inequality problems for set-valued mappings on Riemannian manifolds are established. Applications to convex optimization problems on Riemannian manifolds are provided.

Abstract:About ten years ago, Schmuckenschläger proved that the lowest eigenvalue of Dirichlet Laplacian for the intersection of two balls (i.e., convex, symmetric and compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with non-empty interior) is less than the sum of the lowest eigenvalue for each. His arguments rely on Kac's formula, the log-concavity of Gaussian measures, the symmetry of balls and Lieb's classical result for the intersection of two domains. In this note we revisit Schmuckenschläger's proof and propose a direct and elementary Lieb-free approach to these inequalities.

Abstract:We study the mean values sets of the second order divergence form elliptic operator with principal coefficients defined as $$a^{ij}_k(x):= \begin{cases} \alpha_k \delta^{ij}(x) &x_n>0 \beta_k \delta^{ij}(x) &x_n<0. \end{cases}$$ In particular, we will show that the mean value sets associated to such an operator need not be convex as $\alpha_k$ and $\beta_k$ converge to 1. This example then leads to an example of nonconvex mean value sets for smooth $a^{ij}(x)$.

Abstract:We extend Polyak's theorem on the convexity of joint numerical range from three to any number of quadratic forms on condition that they can be generated by three quadratic forms with a positive definite linear combination. Our new result covers the fundamental Dines's theorem. As applications, we further extend Yuan's lemma and S-lemma, respectively. Our extended Yuan's lemma is used to build a more generalized assumption than that of Haeser (J. Optim. Theory Appl. 174(3): 641-649, 2017), under which the standard second-order necessary optimality condition holds at local minimizer. The extended S-lemma reveals strong duality of homogeneous quadratic optimization problem with two bilateral quadratic constraints.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate error bounds for convex polynomials. We prove that for a convex polynomial f in n variables which is not everywhere positive and which is not constant on any affine subspace, either f is a sum of a convex polynomial in fewer variables and a linear form with negative coefficients or the negativity set of f is compact. As an application, we deduce various types of error bounds for unconstrained and polyhedral-constrained convex polynomials.

In the present article, we determine the sharp estimate of the Schwarzian norm for functions in the class . The Dieudonné's lemma which gives the exact region of variability for derivatives at a point of bounded functions, plays the key role in this study, and we also use this lemma to construct the extremal functions for the sharpness by a new method.

Abstract:Asgeirsson's theorem establishes a mean value property for solutions of the ultrahyperbolic equation. In the case of four variables, it states that the integrals of a solution over certain pairs of conjugate circles are the same. In this paper, the invariance of the four dimensional ultrahyperbolic equation under conformal maps of the pseudo-Euclidean space of signature 2+2 is used to get the most general version of the mean value theorem. The name non-degenerate conjugate conics is used for the most general pairs of curves over which solutions of the ultrahyperbolic equation enjoy the mean value property. These are proven to be pairs of conic sections, so that, in addition to conjugate circles which were known to exist, the picture is completed by finding mean value theorems over conjugate hyperbolae, conjugate parabolae, and line-empty pairs. In addition, Fritz John established a link between conjugate circles and the two rulings of a hyperboloid of revolution. The line incidence property of doubly ruled surfaces is used to prove a one-to-one correspondence between non-degenerate conjugate conics and pairs of rulings of doubly ruled surfaces in Euclidean 3-space.

Abstract:This article mainly investigates the complete convergence and complete moment convergence for weighted sums of random variables satisfying generalized Rosenthal type inequalities, which improves the corresponding ones of the literature. As an application, we further research the errors-in-variables (EV, for short) regression models and exhibit the strong consistency for the least square (LS, for short) estimators. In addition, simulation studies are conducted to verify the finite sample performance of theoretical results.
