Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation oxidation processes based on carbon catalysts are appealing for removing refractory organic contaminants and attract broad interests. Herein, a facile polymerization-pyrolysis approach was reported to synthesize N-doped microporous carbon materials derived from hypercrosslinked polypyrrole (N-MC-Py) without normal template. N-MC-Py exhibits high specific surface area (1434 m 2 g −1 ) and excellent catalytic activity for phenol degradation via PMS activation. The influence of catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, phenol concentration, pH, temperature, and co-existing anions on phenol degradation are evaluated. As a result, N-MC-Py delivers a considerable degradation efficiency of 97.02 % within 20 min for phenol. In addition, admirable adaptability to pH, co-existing ions and real water matrices could be realized. Quenching tests, electron paramagnetic resonance, and electrochemical experiments demonstrate that singlet oxygen is the dominant reactive species, accompanied with the non-radical pathway of continuous electron transport. Sulfate and hydroxyl radicals play an auxiliary role in the N-MC-Py/PMS/phenol system. Density functional theory calculations reveal graphitic-N species could provide roust interfacial interactions and optimal reactive sites for PMS accumulation. This study presents a considerable promise catalyst for the degradation of phenolic contaminants via PMS activation and provides an in-depth insight into the PMS activation mechanism triggered nonradical pathway by N-doped porous carbon materials.
