Abstract:In this note, it is shown that a finite group G is solvable if for each odd prime divisor p of |G|, |Irr(B0(G)2)∩Irr(B0(G)p)|≤2, where Irr(B0(G)p) is the set of complex irreducible characters of the principal p-block B0(G)p of G. Also, the structure of such groups is investigated. Examples show that the bound 2 is best possible.

Abstract:In this note, we give a group-theoretic condition which is equivalent to the fact that the trivial character is the only complex irreducible character of a finite group G which is contained in the principal p-block for each prime p in a specified set of prime divisors of the order of G. This character-theoretic condition has been studied previously by a number of authors.

Abstract:Let A and G be finite groups such that A acts coprimely on G by automorphisms. We prove that if every self-centralizing non-nilpotent A -invariant subgroup of G is a TI-subgroup or a subnormal subgroup, then every non-nilpotent A -invariant subgroup of G is subnormal and G is p -nilpotent or p -closed for any prime divisor p of | G | . If every self-centralizing non-metacyclic A -invariant subgroup of G is a TI-subgroup or a subnormal subgroup, then every non-metacyclic A -invariant subgroup of G is subnormal and G is solvable.

A local-global principle for unipotent characters

Abstract:We obtain an adaptation of Dade's Conjecture and Späth's Character Triple Conjecture to unipotent characters of simple, simply connected finite reductive groups of type $\bf{A}$, $\bf{B}$ and $\bf{C}$. In particular, this gives a precise formula for counting the number of unipotent characters of each defect $d$ in any Brauer $\ell$-block $B$ in terms of local invariants associated to $e$-local structures. This provides a geometric version of the local-global principle in representation theory of finite groups. A key ingredient in our proof is the construction of certain parametrisations of unipotent generalised Harish-Chandra series that are compatible with isomorphisms of character triples.

Invariants and semi-invariants in the cohomology of the complement of a reflection arrangement

Abstract:Suppose V is a finite dimensional, complex vector space, A is a finite set of codimension one subspaces of V, and G is a finite subgroup of the general linear group GL(V) that permutes the hyperplanes in A. In this paper we study invariants and semi-invariants in the graded QG-module H^*(M(A)), where M(A) denotes the complement in V of the hyperplanes in A and H^*( . ) denotes rational singular cohomology, in the case when A is a reflection arrangement and the pair (A,G) arises from a reflection coset. Our main result is the construction of an explicit, natural (from the point of view of Coxeter groups) basis of the space of invariants, H^*(M(A))^G. In addition to leading to a proof of the description of the space of invariants conjectured by Felder and Veselov for Coxeter groups that does not rely on computer calculations, this construction provides an extension of this description of the space of invariants to arbitrary finite, complex reflection groups. The main result also leads to simplifications of some cohomology computations of Lehrer, Callegaro-Marin, and Marin.

Abstract:Suppose that G G is a finite, unitary reflection group acting on a complex vector space V V and X X is the fixed point subspace of an element of G G . Define N N to be the setwise stabilizer of X X in G G , Z Z to be the pointwise stabilizer, and C = N / Z C=N/Z . Then restriction defines a homomorphism from the algebra of G G -invariant polynomial functions on V V to the algebra of C C -invariant functions on X X . Extending earlier work by Douglass and Röhrle for Coxeter groups, we characterize when the restriction mapping is surjective for arbitrary unitary reflection groups G G in terms of the exponents of G G and C C and their reflection arrangements. A consequence of our main result is that the variety of G G -orbits in the G G -saturation of X X is smooth if and only if it is normal.

Infinite Dimensional Analysis Quantum Probability and Related Topics

Abstract:Infinite Dimensional Analysis, Quantum Probability and Related Topics, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we develop the theory of quasi-invariant (respectively, strongly quasi-invariant) states under the action of a group [math] of normal ∗-automorphisms of a ∗-algebra (or von Neumann algebra) [math]. We prove that these states are naturally associated to left-[math]-[math]-cocycles. If [math] is compact, the structure of strongly [math]-quasi-invariant states is determined. For any [math]-strongly quasi-invariant state [math], we construct a unitary representation associated to the triple [math]. We prove, under some conditions, that any quantum Markov chain with commuting, invertible and Hermitian conditional density amplitudes on a countable tensor product of type I factors is strongly quasi-invariant with respect to the natural action of the group [math] of local permutations and we give the explicit form of the associated cocycle. This provides a family of nontrivial examples of strongly quasi-invariant states for locally compact groups obtained as inductive limit of an increasing sequence of compact groups.

Brauer's problem 21 for principal blocks

Abstract:Problem 21 of Brauer's list of problems from 1963 asks whether for any positive integer k there are finitely many isomorphism classes of groups that occur as the defect group of a block with k irreducible characters. We solve this problem for principal blocks. Another long-standing open problem (from 1982) in this area asks whether the defect group of a block with 3 irreducible characters is necessarily the cyclic group of order 3. In most cases we reduce this problem to a question on simple groups that is closely related to the recent solution of Brauer's height zero conjecture.

On certain invariants of compact quantum groups

Abstract:We introduce and study a number of invariants of locally compact quantum groups defined by their scaling and modular groups and the spectrum of their modular elements. Focusing mainly on compact quantum groups we consider the question whether triviality of one of the invariants is equivalent to the quantum group being of Kac type and show that it has a positive answer in many cases including duals of second countable type $\mathrm{I}$ discrete quantum groups. We perform a complete calculation of the invariants for all $q$-deformations of compact, simply connected, semisimple Lie groups as well as for some non-compact quantum groups and the compact quantum groups $\operatorname{U}_F^+$. Finally we introduce a family of conditions for discrete quantum groups which for classical discrete groups are all equivalent to the fact that the group is i.c.c. We show that the above mentioned question about characterization of Kac type quantum groups by one of our invariants has a positive answer for duals of discrete quantum groups satisfying such an i.c.c.-type condition and illustrate this with the example of $\operatorname{U}_F^+$.

Abstract:We give an algebraic proof of a result, due to Bialynicki-Birula and Sommese, characterizing the invariant open subsets of a normal proper variety equipped with a $\mathbf{G}_m$-action that admit a proper good quotient. A major ingredient is the existence result for moduli spaces of algebraic stacks due to Alper, Halpern-Leistner and Heinloth.

Abstract:Let G be a finite reductive group such that the derived subgroup of the underlying algebraic group is a product of quasi-simple groups of type A. In this paper, we give an explicit description of the action of automorphisms of G on the set of its irreducible complex characters. This generalizes a recent result of M. Cabanes and B. Späth [Equivariant character correspondences and inductive McKay condition for type A, J. Reine Angew. Math. 728 (2017), 153–194] and provides a useful tool for investigating the local sides of the local-global conjectures as one usually needs to deal with Levi subgroups. As an application we obtain a generalization of the stabilizer condition in the so-called inductive McKay condition [B. Späth, Inductive McKay condition in defining characteristic, Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 44 (2012), 3, 426–438; Theorem 2.12] for irreducible characters of G. Moreover, a criterion is given to explicitly determine whether an irreducible character is a constituent of a given generalized Gelfand–Graev character of G.

Abstract:This paper presents algebraic methods for the study of polynomial relative invariants, when the group G formed by the symmetries and relative symmetries is a compact Lie group. We deal with the case when the subgroup H of symmetries is normal in G with index m, m greater or equal to 2. For this, we develop the invariant theory of compact Lie groups acting on complex vector spaces. This is the starting point for the study of relative invariants and the computation of their generators. We first obtain the space of the invariants under the subgroup $H$ of $\Gamma$ as a direct sum of $m$ submodules over the ring of invariants under the whole group. Then, based on this decomposition, we construct a Hilbert basis of the ring of G-invariants from a Hilbert basis of the ring of H-invariants. In both results the knowledge of the relative Reynolds operators defined on H-invariants is shown to be an essential tool to obtain the invariants under the whole group. The theory is illustrated with some examples.

Abstract:We find the generators of the fields of invariants of the coadjoint action of the unitriangular group on the basic varieties and basic cells. It is proved that the transcendental degree of the field of invariants on a basic cell coincides with the number of factors in the special factorization of the associated element of the Weyl group as a product of reflections.

Abstract:In this paper, we calculate the numbers of irreducible ordinary characters and irreducible Brauer characters in a block of a finite group $G$, whose associated fusion system over a 2-subgroup $P$ of $G$ (which is a defect group of the block) has the hyperfocal subgroup $\mathbb Z_{2^n}\times \mathbb Z_{2^n}$ for some $n\geq 2$, when the block is controlled by the normalizer $N_G(P)$ and the hyperfocal subgroup is contained in the center of $P$, or when the block is not controlled by $N_G(P)$ and the hyperfocal subgroup is contained in the center of the unique essential subgroup in the fusion system. In particular, Alperin's weight conjecture holds in the considered cases.

On the automorphisms of the Drinfeld modular groups

Abstract:Let $A$ be the ring of elements in an algebraic function field $K$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ which are integral outside a fixed place $\infty$. In contrast to the classical modular group $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and the Bianchi groups, the {\it Drinfeld modular group} $G=GL_2(A)$ is not finitely generated and its automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ is uncountable. Except for the simplest case $A=\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ not much is known about the generators of $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ or even its structure. We find a set of generators of $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ for a new case. \par On the way, we show that {\it every} automorphism of $G$ acts on both, the {\it cusps} and the {\it elliptic points} of $G$. Generalizing a result of Reiner for $A=\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ we describe for each cusp an uncountable subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ whose action on $G$ is essentially defined on the stabilizer of that cusp. In the case where $\delta$ (the degree of $\infty$) is $1$, the elliptic points are related to the isolated vertices of the quotient graph $G\setminus\mathcal{T}$ of the Bruhat-Tits tree. We construct an infinite group of automorphisms of $G$ which fully permutes the isolated vertices with cyclic stabilizer.
