Abstract:Glass foams and glass-ceramic foams exhibit great potential in thermal insulation of buildings, consequently reducing the necessity for heating or cooling, and ultimately contributing to energy saving. In this study, we prepared glass-ceramic foams utilizing silicate glass as starting material and CaCO 3 as foaming agent through a thermochemical process. Foams with varying degrees of relative crystallinity were produced by controlling temperature and duration of isothermal heat treatment. The foaming mechanism in the glass-ceramics was discussed by analyzing how the heat flow, mass, and volume evolve within the powder mixture during dynamic heating. The crystallization in glass did not show any clear trend on the compressive strength of glass foams. On the other hand, the thermal conductivity of the glass-ceramic foams increases with increasing relative crystallinity. The calculated solid thermal conductivity exhibited a minimum at low relative crystallinity (<20вҖҜ%). These findings are crucial for designing high performance glass-ceramic foams for thermal insulation, potentially also for fabricating glass-ceramic foams using waste glasses.

Abstract:The high density foam glass is prepared by sintered method using waste cathode ray tubes neck glass and PbO as major raw materials,adding a given amount of SiC,PbF2,Fe2O3,Bi2O3.The properties of high density foam glass were analyzed by means of XRD and SEM.The results show that the higher the foaming temperature,the lower the density of product.With the increase of PbO,the foaming temperature gradually decreases,density and intensity of the product gradually increase.When the test sample is holding for 30 min under the foaming temperature of 810 ℃,three kinds of needle-like crystal of PbFeO2F、Pb and PbO come into existence,and mechanical properties of the test sample is improved.

Abstract:The foam glass is prepared by powder sintered method using waste cathode ray tubes glass as main raw material,taking SiC as foaming agent and Na2SiF6 as flux agent.The properties of foam glass were analyzed by means of DTA,XRD and SEM.The results show that the optimal amount of SiC is 5%.The foaming temperature is reduced to 820 ℃ when add Na2SiF6 in compounding formula,and holding for 30 min under foaming temperature,the hostcrystal phase is Pb and paracrystal phase are Pb3O4 and Al6Si2O13 and foam glass with density of 0.653 g/cm3,compression strength of 6.28 MPa and bending strength of 2.11 MPa.

Abstract:Significant achievements have been made in glass research and development in China since 1949. A review of the current status of development of the glass industry in China is presented, including those of plate glass, glass container and glass ware, electric lamp and electron tube glass, optical glass, technical and fibrous glass. Emphasis is laid on some special glasses such as laser glass, glass ceramics, tempered glass, fused silica and glass fiber for optical communications.This paper also reports the experimental results on the glass formation and crystallization process, mechanical and elastic properties, optical and spectroscopic properties, electric and electronic properties of glasses. The relationship between these properties and the chemical composition of glasses have been studied and the methods for calculating these physical properties of glasses have also been developed. Investigations have been started on new glass systems, such as chalcogenide, halide, nitrate and oxide-halide mixed glasses. The above mentioned research works are being carried out in institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, universities and institutes led by industrial ministries and local governments.

Abstract:Waste glass is utilized to prepare porous microcrystalline glass by adding the nucleating agent V2O5 and oth-er auxiliaries.The effects of the foam temperature and the holding time on the bubble diameter of porous mi-cro-crystalline glass were studied.The experimental result showed that the higher the foam temperature is,the bigger the bubble diameter is,and the higher the product density;the optimum foam temperature is 725℃.The research also showed that the longer the holding time is,the bigger the bubble diameter is.When the product is held at 725 ℃ for 25min,the precipitated crystal phases are SiO2,Al2SiO5 and Na2Ca2(SiO3)3,the average bubble diameter is 2.039mm,the density is 0.65 g.cm-3,the thermal expansion coefficient is 115.6×10-7 ℃-1,the compressive strength is 7.31 MPa,the bending strength is 5.83MPa.

Comments on Inorganic Chemistry

Abstract:Crystal and transparent ceramics have been considered to be a new generation of materials with a very important role in secure and economic sustainable development. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages among highly crystalline transparent glass ceramics, crystals, and ceramics have been compared, including their chemical composition, preparation technology, and the equipment requirement of the materials. Based on the author's knowledge and understanding, the possibility of highly crystalline transparent glass ceramics substituting for crystals or ceramics has been discussed. The present situation and newest progress in the research of highly crystalline transparent glass ceramics have been introduced. The attractive opportunities and difficult challenges in this research direction are shown in this article. In particular, this paper focuses on some ideas from the author, rather than a simple introduction to the existing situation and research progress of transparent materials.

Abstract:Tailing microcrystalline foam glass (TMFG) is a building material that not only has the characteristics of light weight, fire resistance, and thermal insulation, but also has decorative applications. TMFG has a broad application prospect, but there has been little research on the macroscale mechanical properties of this material. In order to analyze TMFG basic mechanical properties, a series of experimental studies were carried out by performing the four-point flexural, shear, uniaxial compression, and splitting tensile strength tests. The research showed that the foaming agent (SiC) had a great influence on the mechanical properties of the material. With the reduction of the amount of SiC, the strength of the material and brittle failure increased. The microcrystalline decoration surface improved the flexural strength and compression strength of the tailing microcrystalline foam glass. The modulus of elasticity and the Poisson’s ratio are discussed, and a formula for the modulus of elasticity is proposed. Based on the analysis of the stress and strain curves, a constitutive model is proposed for the application of tailing microcrystalline foam glass and future research on this material.

Abstract:This study created foam glass from waste bottle glass employing silicon cutting waste (SCW) of loose abrasive slurry sawing as the foaming agent. The influence of affecting parameters, namely sintering temperature, glass powder particle size, SCW dosage, heating rate, holding time, were investigated. The produced foam glass was characterized to examine its microstructure, bulk density, compressive strength, porosity, and thermal conductivity, and was compared with that produced using silicon carbide (SiC) reagent as the foaming agent. The results indicated that under the optimal conditions of sintering temperature of 775 °C, glass powder particle size of 0.15 mm, SCW dosage of 1 wt% (the D50 of SiC in SCW was ca. 10 μm), heating rate of 10 °C/min, and holding time of 30 min, the produced foam glass had a compressive strength of 4.1 MPa, bulk density of 0.56 g/cm3, porosity of 78%, and thermal conductivity of 0.16 W/m·k; these properties meet with standards for thermal insulation materials. In contrast, using SiC reagent with a D50 of ca. 22 μm revealed 900 °C as the optimal sintering temperature, which yielded foam glass having a compressive strength of 5.4 MPa, bulk density of 0.67 g/cm3, porosity of 73%, and thermal conductivity of 0.2 W/m·k. By using SCW as the foaming agent, foam glass is able to be produced under comparatively low temperature and has favorable properties. In addition, the simultaneous waste valorization of waste bottle glass and SCW can be achieved.

Abstract:We prepare a type of foam glass achieving an excellent combination of low sintering temperatures of 800 °C, low bulk densities of 320 kg/m3, and high compressive strengths of 7.02 MPa. We determine the optimal experimental parameters first and comprehensively compare the structure-property relationship of the foam glass products with carbon and CaCO3 as foaming agents. The carbon-agent foam glasses with uniform pore structures exhibit low density and high strength while the CaCO3-agent counterpart with large, connected pores exhibits lower density, lower strength. Next, we investigate the effects of Na2HPO4 as foam stabilizer and find that 10 wt.% of Na2HPO4 can effectively stabilize the foaming effects and enable uniformly distributed pore structures. Finally, the molecular nature is elucidated with molecular dynamics simulations, where we find the nanoscale pore structure may play a key role in differing the mechanical performance. This integrated experimental and computational study demonstrates an efficient way to produce foam glasses of superior properties with theoretical insights.

Abstract:Functional crystal growth induced by laser irradiation in glass materials has attracted a lot of interests because this method demonstrated potential applications for producing integrated optical devices.In most cases,the laser energy can be absorbed by the glass due to the linear or nonlinear absorption mechanism,which resulted in a locally effect for the glass melting and then for the growth of crystal in the focal point of the laser beam.We present here some recent advances related to the laser-induced-crystal technique and its applications for integrated optics.We also suggest future research directions in this field.

Abstract:Glass‐based insulating materials have attracted considerable attention owing to their tailorable properties. It is known that the thermal conductivity of glass ceramics can be greatly influenced by varying their crystallinity. However, the mechanism of such influence in glass–ceramic foams remains poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrate our new findings regarding the correlation between thermal conductivity and crystallinity in silicate glass–ceramic foams. The foams were produced by mixing ZrO2‐containing soda‐lime glass powder with CaCO3 as foaming agent and foam them using a thermochemical approach. ZrO2 was introduced as a nucleation agent. The crystallinity of the foams was varied by adjusting the heating protocol, i.e., by varying temperature, time, and number of heating cycles. The glass–ceramic foams exhibited relative crystallinities of <30%. The identity of the crystalline phases in the glass–ceramic foams varies with crystallinity. Specifically, cristobalite diminished, but devitrite grew with increasing crystallinity. It was observed that the crystallinity had a nonmonotonic impact on the thermal conductivity of the glass–ceramic foams. The optimum crystallinity for achieving the lowest thermal conductivity was 8–10%, resulting in an approximately 20% lower thermal conductivity compared to noncrystalline. Our findings have implications for the future design of glass–ceramic foams.

Abstract:Ceramic glass has been increasingly available in the field of optics and others due to its excellent performance. So the demands of precisely processed surface quality has constantly increased. There is difference in its processing performance with the homogeneous materials because it consists of crystallization phases and glass phases. In this paper the internal structure of ceramic glass i considered, The crystallization phases is polycrystalline structure, the crystal grain is very small, and its main crystallization phases is beta-solid solution of quartz. There is remaining glass phases distribution among crystal grains. Tested by X-ray diffraction, the size of crystallite measured is between 300 and 400 angstroms and there is about 20 percent of glass phases. The surface appearance and surface defect of ceramic glass are also presented after cryogenic polishing. Because ceramic glass is constituted with crystallite, which is free-orientation, it is not compact compared with K9 glass and fused quartz. So the super-smooth surface of the ceramic glass is not as good as that of the compact material.

Preparation of Glass-Ceramic Foams Using Extracted Titanium Tailing and Glass Waste As Raw Materials

Abstract:Extracted titanium tailing, a large amount of solid waste produced from Panzhihua in China, not only occupies a lot of lands, but also seriously pollutes the environment. Glass-ceramic foams could be synthesized using extracted titanium tailing as a raw material, mixed with glass waste, foaming agent Na2CO3 and fluxing agent B2O3 by a simple powder foaming method. The effects of preparing conditions such as sintering temperature (760-790 degrees C), sintering time (10-40 min), Na2CO3 content (0-3 wt%) and B2O3 content (0-3 wt%) on the micromorphology have been systematically investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The crystallinity, compressive strength, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion coefficient are investigated by X-ray diffraction, electronic universal testing machine, heat flow method and thermal dilatometer. The pore size, percent, and distribution of the glass-ceramic foams can be controllably prepared by adjusting the preparing conditions. And the pore structure plays an important role in determining the apparent density, compressive strength, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion coefficient. The glass-ceramic foam has a low apparent density of 0.30 +/- 0.01 g cm(-3), an available compressive strength of 1.0 +/- 0.1 MPa, a thermal conductivity of 0.060 +/- 0.002 W m(-1) degrees C-1, a high porosity of 88.0% and an average thermal expansion coefficient of 5.27 x 10(-6) m m(-1) degrees C-1 under the optimal preparation parameters, indicating that the glass-ceramic foam could be widely used in construction and building industry.
