Abstract:The microstructure of Al2O3/TiO2-NiCrBSi graded thermal barrier coatings produced by flame spraying processing on substrate of 1Cr18Ni9Ti has been studied by means of OPM，SEM，EDAX and XRD. The results show that Al2O3/TiO2 and Ni-base alloy is gradually transited along the direction of the coating, and the bond between Al2O3/TiO2 and Ni-base alloy is well made . There is no any chemical reaction between Al2O3/TiO2 and Ni-base alloy , no new phase is formed during spraying. A compound structure is formed in some layers when the content of one component is predominant, where the second phase is dispersed uniformly in the matrix. In other layers two phases are band-type.
The Effect of Annealing on Microstructure and High Temperature Erosion Property of Arc-Spraying Coatings Containing Nanosized Ceramic Powders

Abstract:A composite coating containing nanosized ceramic powders was fabricated by a supersonic arc-spraying procedure using corresponding cored wires.The microstructure and high temperature erosion property of the coating were studied by characterizations with optical microscope,microhardness,X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy,with special attentions paid to the effect of the subsequent annealing treatment.The results show that the skin and the cored powders melted and fused to form homogeneous solid solutions during the arc-spraying procedure using the cored wires.The achieved coating shows homogeneous hardness.The subsequent annealing of the coating reduced defects and residual stress,decomposed the metastable phases and at the same time improved the crystallinity of corresponding phases in the coating,which in turn improved its hardness.The high-temperature erosion resistance of the coatings after the subsequent annealing improved significantly.
Development Status and Prospect on Equipment Application of Thermal Spray Technology

Abstract:Thermal spraying is an important method of coating preparation in the field of equipment surface engineering, which has achieved continuous development in the processing of functional coating and the remanufacturing of waste parts. It has also been used in the field of near net forming or material manufacturing related to metals, ceramics and other materials, which shows good development potential. This paper reviews the application of thermal spraying in the surface protection of aircraft engines and landing gears. It mainly uses plasma thermal spraying technology to make ceramic coating and new CBN coating to improve the antioxidative activity and prolong the life of the coating significantly. The development status and application of typical equipment were analyzed in the thermal spraying field, such as stealth equipment, anti-corrosion and anti-skid coatings of ship, protection from sand and dust in helicopter and direct additive manufacturing of parts. For example, the electromagnetic wave absorption coating of equipment overcomes the problem of multi-spectrum. “Navy Advanced Amorphous Coating” overcomes the anti-wear and anti-corrosion problems of the deck. The key problems affecting the development of thermal spraying are analyzed from the technical level. It is urgent to break through weak links such as coating residual stress, interface bonding strength and structural defects. Finally, some development directions were put forward about the additive manufacturing and remanufacturing field. This paper mainly summarizes the application status of thermal spraying technology in typical weapons and equipment. The key technical issues affecting the development of thermal spraying are analyzed, which fills the blank of military thermal spraying review.

Abstract:Ceramic-coated metals with enhanced properties such as chemical and environmental deterioration resistance and high thermal stability have previously found widespread uses in various industries. However, their application was limited due to weak bonding at the interfaces of dissimilar materials. To achieve the necessary interfaces and bonding qualities, a variety of procedures, primarily mechanical treatments, were used. Interface structure and composition, transition temperature, and wettability are important characteristics. In this review, extensive study has been carried out for several thermal spray methods, such as flame spray, electric arc spray, and plasma spray technology. The study explores microstructural elements of plasma-sprayed coatings, including bonding mechanisms, pore creation, oxides formation, and other important process parameters. The study emphasizes how crucial wetness is to coating development. It looks at what affects wetting, how interfacial reactions affect reactive wetting, and how important additives or reactive materials are to encouraging wetting. In conclusion, the authors suggest the next studies and technological developments in coating technologies and thermal spray procedures. The study contributes to the continuous advancement of these processes and their applications by pointing out opportunities for more research and development.

Abstract:The effects of post-coating processing by means of flame, laser and vacuum furnace heating on the structure and erosive wear characteristics of flame and plasma spray coatings were studied. The results show that post-coating processing can modify the microstructure, reduce its porosity, increase its plasticity and toughness and improve the metallurgical bonding to the substrate. Therefore, the erosion resistence of these deposits is increased substantially and is even more significant when the erodent impact angle and impact velocity are higher. The mechanism of erosive wear has obviously changed from brittle to plastic erosion. The application of different spray methods and post-coating processing in terms of erosive wear was analysed and compared.

Abstract:Thermal spray coating involves heating of coating materials (ceramic, carbide, and metal alloys) to a semi-molten or molten state and propels to substrate. The flame temperature is in the range of 3,000 to 16,000OC but the surface temperature of the substrate rarely exceeds 500 OC depending on the thermal spray processes being used. The coating materials are feed into the spray gun in the form of powders, rods or wires. Thermal spray coating is use for the following purposes; (i) increase corrosion and wear resistance, (ii) protection against electromagnetic, or electrostatic, (iii) protection against radio frequency interference, (iv) metal buildup and, (iv) cosmetic. Thermal spray coating can be categorized into five most common processes; (i) Flame arc spraying, (ii) Electric Arc spraying, (iii) Plasma arc spraying, (iv) High-velocity Oxy/Fuel (HVOF) and (v) Detonation Gun. In this paper, thermal spraying processes will be explained, along with the advantages and disadvantages of one another.

Abstract:As a thermal spraying technology, low-pressure plasma spraying technology can produce a cleaner, denser, and higher bonding strength coating than traditional atmospheric plasma spraying technology and vapor-phase physical deposition. The principle, classification and characteristics of low-pressure plasma spraying were mainly introduced and the generation and development of low-pressure plasma spraying were reviewed. Compared with plasma spraying, ultra-low-pressure plasma spraying and plasma spray deposition, the low-pressure plasma spraying technology was analyzed for its unique advantages in preparing coating. The domestic and foreign research and application of low-pressure plasma spraying technology in the preparation of thermal barrier coatings, fuel cells, solar energy, semiconductors and other fields were further described and the development was prospected. It was also pointed out that the key development direction of low-pressure plasma spraying technology in the future was the in-depth study on the plasma spray flame and the mechanism of the material substrate, as well as the combination with other cutting-edge technologies.

Abstract:In this paper a documentation was made to highlight the characteristics obtained on surface modifications by means of the Cold Spray, using different powders based on tungsten carbide (WC) and agglomerated with nickel, sprayed on different materials, as well as the possibility of using 52100 steel, which is often used in the manufacture of rolling bearings and which has acquired high performances both in terms of wear and fatigue and in terms of high resistance due to the alloying with chromium and the high percentage of carbon. Studies on the use of WIP-C1 powders, powders attributed exclusively to the cold spraying process, and the prior use of WIP-BC1 powders, intended to establish a stronger bond between the substrate and the base layer, have shown that good wear and impact resistance is obtained and the risk of delamination and interfacial porosity has been minimised. Studies with different coating compositions using several methods to improve surface quality by surface spraying, namely HVOF (high velocity oxygen fuel), CGDS (cold gas dynamic sterilization) and CS (cold spray), led to an improvement in performance, with the cold spray process showing improved scratch resistance, good adhesion between the substrate and the sprayed layer and higher hardness. Surface spraying is an efficient process to obtain additional characteristics, improving mechanical, tribological, corrosion and erosion properties, and of all the other techniques, Cold Spray becomes competitive because it is the only technology that deposits particles below the melting point.

Abstract:Thermal spray coatings are a group of coating processes that enhance the performance of parts by adding functionality to surfaces. In the past few decades, thermal spray coatings technology was used to resist wear, erosion, corrosion, cavitation, repair and dimensional restoration of parts. However, the consideration of process parameters setting develops a reliable coating having high mechanical and morphological properties for demanding coating applications. Hence the aim of this review paper is to provide an overview of distinct thermal spray coatings, historical development, hot corrosion mechanism and effect of chemical composition and alloying elements on the hot corrosion resistance of super alloys in USC power plants. Then the effects of processing conditions on the mechanical properties of distinct thermal sprayed coatings obtained at distinct process parameters are summarised. Finally, the distinct thermal post treatments such as fusing of self-flux alloys, remelting and solid heat treatments, merits, demerits and future challenges are discussed.

Abstract:This paper systematically introduces the application status of coating-preparation technology on light alloys in the field of aviation parts repair. Included are the advantages and disadvantages of thermal spraying technology and laser cladding technology in the application process, as well as the research status and application prospects of the emerging cold spray (CS) technology and supersonic laser deposition (SLD) technology. Compared with traditional thermal-spraying technology, CS has many advantages, such as low spraying temperature, low oxygen content of the coating, and low porosity, which can effectively avoid oxidation, burning loss, phase change, and grain length during thermal spraying. CS can prepare oxygen-sensitive, heat-sensitive, amorphous, and nanomaterial coatings that are difficult to prepare by traditional thermal-spraying technology. However, in the preparation of high-strength super-hard alloys, CS has shortcomings such as low deposition efficiency and bonding strength. SLD overcomes the shortcomings of CS while inheriting the advantages of CS. In the future, both technologies will be widely used in repairing and remanufacturing in the field of aviation. Based on the principles of CS and SLD, this paper introduces, in detail, the deposition mechanism of the coating, and the specific application examples of CS in the aviation field at the present stage are described. The research and application status of the two technologies in the fields of anti-corrosion coating, wear-resistant coating, functional coating, repair, and remanufacturing in recent years are reviewed. Finally, the application and development prospects of CS and SLD are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper the new process of arc spraying was researched on CuCo2Be alloy surface,the high strength and high wear resistance Cr3C2/Fe coating were prepared on CuCo2Be alloy surface by adopting a series of different arc spraying process parameters. Based on the test the arc spraying process parameters was optimized, the optimized result was: spraying voltage was 38V, the current is 180A, spraying distance was 150mm, spraying air pressure was 0.7MPa, the bonding strength of the coating and the substrate was 30.5MPa; and the thermal shock resistance of coating Cr3C2/Fe was studied in detail by different spraying process parameters, it was showed: thermal shock resistance of the coating was best by spray low voltage and low current process. By using microhardness tester, super depth of field microscope, SEM, EDS and XRD, mechanical properties, microstructure, phase composition and its content distribution of Cr3C2 / Fe coating were studied, the study results were showed: the micro-hardness of coating was 992.75HV, coating was a typical lamellar structure, and a small amount of pore and oxides in the coating; the mainly phase of coating included: Fe, Fe-Cr, C0.14 Fe1.86 and Fe7C3.

Abstract:In the present study, TiCN coatings were developed by atmosphere reactive plasma spraying, and micro-defects, e.g. pores, cracks, cavities, inevitably existed in the as-sprayed coatings. Heat treatment as one of key method to improve corrosion resistance of coatings has attracted widely interests. The microstructure, corrosion properties of samples with different heat treatment temperatures were studied using XRD, EPMA, EIS measurement and Potentiodynamic polarization curves. Results show that the sample with higher heating temperature can form more Ti2O, Ti3O and TiO2, and the porosity of coatings was decreased, which results in an increment of energy or potential for the corrosive ions into the coatings. It found that the one heat-treated at 600 °C exhibits a better corrosion resistance with an ccorrosion potential (Ecorr) of −517 mV and low corrosion current (icorr) of 2.18 μA·cm−2, compared with other samples. The results also identify that local corrosion originates from the microdefects, and the first formed oxides provide an infiltrated channel for latter corrosion.

Abstract:Abstract Plasma‐assisted low‐pressure cold spraying and conventional cold spraying methods are used to prepare copper coatings on copper substrates. The thickness, porosity micromorphology, and mechanical and corrosion properties of the copper coating prepared by high‐pressure cold spraying and plasma‐assisted low‐pressure cold spraying are studied. The results indicated that in single‐pass deposition, the copper coating prepared by plasma‐assisted low‐pressure cold spraying has a small porosity and a thick coating under the spraying conditions with the same powder feeding rate, which has a better deposition effect. The coating grains prepared by the plasma‐assisted method undergo a recrystallization process, and the grains are refined. Plasma‐assisted low‐pressure cold spray technology can achieve a good repair effect on parts.

Abstract:WC-Co-Cr coatings are widely employed due to their improved wear resistance and mechanical properties, however, the properties and performance of these coatings are compromised by the processing parameters of each spraying technique. Therefore, this study is aimed to evaluate and determine the effect of the deposition parameters on the properties and microstructural characteristics of WC-Co-Cr coatings using a more economical thermal spray technique. In particular, the influence of flame spray parameters on the microstructure, crystal structure, hardness, and sliding wear resistance of WC- Co-Cr coatings was examined. Two parameters were considered: Type of flame (reducing, neutral and oxidizing), and the spray torch nozzle exit area. Results indicated that WC particles undergo considerable degree of decarburization and dissolution during spraying, showing substantial amounts of W2C, W, and Co3W3C, for all the considered conditions. However, the extent of phase transformation depended largely on the flame chemistry. The microstructure of the coatings was mainly affected by the spray nozzle. Regarding the sliding wear behavior, the coatings with uniform distribution of hard particles provided the best wear resistance. The decomposition of WC into W2C phase seems to have meaningless significance in the mass loss, nevertheless, the WC phase transformation to metallic tungsten and η-phase (Co3W3C) produce higher wear rates due to deficiency of carbide particles and embrittlement of the binder phase which induces cracking and delamination of the splats.

Abstract:Microstructure and property of high-velocity arc spraying NiTi/Cr3C2 coat added with nano-TiC particles is analyzed,and erosion-resistant ability of this kind of coat is investigated.The results of mechanical tests,EDS and XRD analysis、metallographic observation and SEM observation show that there are lots of dispersion particles in the matrix of the coat.The coat has a character of half-plastic erosive mechanism with a higher erosion-resistance than the coat without nano particles at both low and high impact angles.

Abstract:In response to environmental issues and the intensive degradation of parts, the civil and military aviation industries have shown increasing interest in developing more sustainable materials and technologies; therefore, this paper proposes the regeneration of structural components by cold spraying. As part of this research, Ti–Al composite powder was deposited by low-pressure cold spraying and then heat treated to obtain a Ti–Al3 intermetallic phase. The Ti–Al3 intermetallic phase is characterized by high hardness and abrasion resistance. The research has shown that at appropriately selected heat treatment parameters, this phase is formed in a certain area of the Ti–Al coating. The presence and morphology of the Ti–Al3 phase were confirmed by X-ray, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. It has been found that the presence of this phase increases the hardness of coatings and reduces the friction coefficient.
