Abstract:Exploring novel titania-based semiconductor photocatalysts with both high specific surface area and expanded visible light response is still a challenge. In this work, we report the first synthesis of mesoporous nitrogen-modified titania by a facile and convenient exfoliation–reassembling strategy. Ethylamine is used for the delamination of layered titanate, and meanwhile, also serves as a source of nitrogen. X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the random reassembling between titanate nanosheets and anatase nanoparticles give rise to its porous structure. N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms demonstrate that the obtained photocatalyst is fairly high in specific surface area and in mesoporosity (SBET of ∼215m2g−1 and pore size of ∼5.6nm) for effective photocatalysis. The mesoporous titania photocatalyst possesses an extended absorption in the visible region due to the successful modification by NHx species, which is confirmed using the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis, combined with the Fourier-transform infrared spectra. Photocatalytic tests reveal that the mesoporous nitrogen-modified titania material show an excellent catalytic performance for the degradation of organic compounds under visible light irradiation, which is much higher than those of the commercial P25, pristine protonic titanate, and N-doped mesoporous titania photocatalyst prepared from a template-free route. The present work provides a new way to develop efficient nitrogen-modified oxides materials with high specific surface area and enhanced visible light absorption for solar energy utilization.

Abstract:A novel micro-mesopores composite material has successfully been synthesized at basic hydrothermal conditions using natural mineral montmorillonite (MMT) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Two surfactants, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), have been employed in order to shape the pores in the composite. The resultant silica-clay has large surface area (472 m(2)/g) and high hydrothermal stability, which makes it a potentially host-material for catalyst. The molecular size of different surfactant leads to the multi-peak distribution of pore size, and the surfactant of larger size (PEG) corresponds to the formation of larger pores. Moreover, the photocatalytic results show that, comparing with pure TiO2 particles, the loaded TiO2 on such silica-clay shows higher photodegradation rate of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous. A H2O2 Oxidation Approach to Ti3C2/TiO2 for Efficient Photocatalytic Removal of Distinct Organic Pollutants in Water.

Abstract:To develop versatile photocatalysts for efficient degradation of distinct organic pollutants in water is a continuous pursuit in environment remediation. Herein, we directly oxidize Ti3C2 MXene with hydrogen peroxide to produce C-doped anatase TiO2 nanowires with aggregates maintaining a layered architecture of the MXene. The Ti3C2 MXene provides a titanium source for TiO2, a carbon source for in situ C-doping, and templates for nanowire aggregates. Under UV light illumination, the optimized Ti3C2/TiO2 exhibits a reaction rate constant 1.5 times that of the benchmark P25 TiO2 nanoparticles, toward photocatalytic degradations of trace phenol in water. The mechanism study suggests that photogenerated holes play key roles on the phenol degradation, either directly oxidizing phenol molecules or in an indirect way through oxidizing first the surface hydroxyl groups. The unreacted Ti3C2 MXene, although with trace amounts, is supposed to facilitate electron transfer, which inhibits charge recombination. The unique nanostructure of layered aggregates of nanowires, abundant surface oxygen vacancies arising from the carbon doping, and probably the Ti3C2/TiO2 heterojunction guarantee the high photocatalytic efficiency toward removals of organic pollutants in water. The photocatalyst also exhibits an activity superior to, or at least comparable to, the benchmark P25 TiO2 toward photodegradations for typical persistent organic pollutants of phenol, dye molecule of rhodamine B, antibiotic of tetracycline, pharmaceutical wastewater of ofloxacin, and pesticide of N,N-dimethylformamide, when evaluated in total organic carbon removal.

Abstract:TiO2-diatomite photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel process with various pre-modified diatomite. In order to obtain diatomite with different surface characteristics, two modification approaches including calcination and phosphoric acid treatment on the micro-structure of diatomite are introduced. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and micromorphology analysis. The results indicate that, compared with pure TiO2, the anatase-to-rutile phase transition temperature of TiO2 loaded on diatomite carrier is significantly increased to nearly 900 degrees C, depending on the different pretreatment method of diatomite. The photocatalytic activities of different samples were evaluated by their degradation rate of methyl orange ( MO) dye under UV and visible-light irradiation. The samples prepared by phosphoric acid pretreatment method exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. After 90 min of UV irradiation, about 90% of MO is decomposed by the best effective photocatalyst. And after 8 h visible-light irradiation, nearly 60% of MO is decomposed by the same sample. Further mechanism investigation reveals that the H3PO4 pretreatment process can obviously change the surface features of diatomite carrier, cause the formation of Si-O-Ti bond, increase the binding strength between TiO2 and diatomite, restrain crystal growth of loaded TiO2, and thus form thermal-stable meso-porous structure at the granular spaces. It helps to build micro-, meso- and macro-porous hierarchical porous structure in TiO2-diatomite, and improves the charge and mass transfer efficiency during catalyzing process, resulting in the significantly increased photocatalytic activity of TiO2-diatomite pretreated by phosphoric acid. Abstract:Mesoporous molecular sieves possessing high mesopore volumes and large specific surface areas were prepared and characterized by means of XRD, low temperature N2 adsorption-desorption measurements,FT IR, Raman, UV-visible diffuse reflectance and XPS spectroscopy. The materials contain both framework and extra-framework Ti centers which exhibit selective oxidation catalytic activity and photocatalytic activity respectively. The catalysis of selective oxidation was studied with the hydroxylation of benzene with hydrogen peroxide and photochemical activity was studied by the yields of · OH and H2O2, respectively.

Abstract:Titania-based nanocomposites have recently attracted much attention due to their unique structure and properties. Titania has been known to have three crystal phases: brookite, anatase and rutile. The anatase titania has the highest photoactivity than the other two phases. Meanwhile Ohtani et al. [1] reported that amorphous titania has a negligible photoactivity compared to the crystalline titania. Much work has been conducted on the optimization of catalytic properties of titania used in the photodegradation of organic pollutants in water by either using modified titania or thin titania films. Many researches indicated that dopants, such as many oxides, can effectively suppress the transformation of anatase into rutile by improving the onset transformation temperature [2]. Silica-titania mixed oxide is considered a potential candidate because it is used as not only a good photocatalyst itself but also a support material for other chemical reaction catalysts [3, 4]. 30SiO2/TiO2 powders (30 denotes the weight percent of silica) were prepared by sol-gel process. Ti(OBu n )4 and TEOS were used as precursors of titania and silica respectively. After TEOS was stirred in a mixture solution of pure ethanol, distilled water and hydrochloric acid for 1 h, Ti(OBu n )4 was added slowly into the mixture. The sol of SiO2/TiO2 was obtained after another two hours’ vigorous stirring and cooled to room temperature. The gel was calcined at different temperatures and then ground into fine powders. The distilled water solution of methyl orange (with a concentration of 25 mg/L) was chosen for photodegradation. 0.2 g powders were added into 40 ml of the above solution with vigorous agitation under the mercury light. A 756MC UV-VIS spectrometer was used to record the change of concentration of the methyl orange. FT-IR spectra was obtained by a Bruker EQUINOX55 spectrometer. TEM and HREM observations were carried out using a Jeol-2010 electron microscope. The XRD patterns were made in a D/max3A diffractometer with Cu Kα radiation. The crystallite size of powders was determined by Scherrer equation. Electron spin resonance measurements were made with a Bruker paramagnetic spectrometer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra of the sample were obtained with an NP-1 using the Mg Kα excitation source and the binding energies referenced to the C1s hydrocarbon line at 284.6 eV. The atomic ratios were obtained by intergrating the areas under the peak. Photodegradation for methyl orange with 30SiO2/ TiO2 samples calcinated at different temperature under UV irradiation is illustrated in Fig. 1. The results of other samples heated at temperatures higher than 850 ◦ C were not shown in this figure because further increase of the calcination temperature decreased the decomposition rate. It can be seen that decomposition rate of the samples fired at 400 ◦ C and 500 ◦ Ci s low. When the calcination temperature was further increased to 600 ◦ C, the higher photoactivity than Degussa P25’s was obtained. The sample heated at 800 ◦ C has the best photoactivity about 2 times higher than the Degussa P25.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CD) and Ti species were assembled in the mesoporous silica matrix by a one-pot co-condensation strategy. The CD and Ti in the silica matrix were demonstrated to interact in two ways: on the one hand, part of the carbon in CD was doped into the Ti species; on the other hand, CD worked as photosensitizers for Ti species. The synergy effect between CD and Ti in the silica matrix along with the unique physical properties of the composite including ordered pore channels, large surface area and wide-range light absorption from UV to near IR made this composite be an excellent photocatalyst, as demonstrated by the photocatalytic degradation of azo dye acid orange 7. In addition to the degradation of organic pollutant, this newly developed mesoporous composite is expected to have promising applications in various areas related to environment and energy such as photoreduction of CO2 and photocatalytic H2 production.

Abstract:Mesoporous SBA-15 was used to anchor TiO2 nanoparticles into the mesopores to form high surface area TiO2 /SBA-15 nanocomposites, and then the influence of mesoporous-structure on the photocatalytic performance was investigated. TiO2/SBA-15 nanocomposites possessed the high specific surface area and appropriate pore size, indicating the excellent adsorption performance. TiO2 /SBA-15 nanocomposites exhibited the higher photocatalytic activity to degrade dyes (methylene blue: MB) than TiO2 (removing SBA-15), which should attributed to the excellent adsorption performance of the nanocomposites. MB was absorbed to form the higher concentration near TiO2 /SBA-15 photocatalysts, and the photocatalytic degradation for MB was improved. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of titania-modified MCM-41 have been synthesized from varying three kinds of titanium precursors [Ti(OBun)(4), Ti(OBun)(3)(acac), Ti(OBun)(2)(acac)(2)] respectively and mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41, in which titania existed as single or double layers. The samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption at 77 K, Si-29 MAS NMR, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, as well as by solid state diffuse reflectance UV-VIS spectroscopy. The titanium precursor was cocondensed with the active silanol groups of MCM-41 via Si-O-Ti bonds and the resulting titania modified the mesopore walls of MCM-41 after hydrolysis and calcination. In the titania-modified MCM-41 samples, although the titania species were in an amorphous state and in tetrahedral coordination rather than octahedral coordination, which exists extensively in crystalline titania, they exhibited high photocatalytic activity for the photodecomposition of phenol and the photoreduction of Cr(vi) to Cr(iii).
Photocatalytic Hydroxylation of Benzene to Phenol over Titanium Oxide Entrapped into Hydrophobically Modified Siliceous Foam

Abstract:The selective photocatalytic conversion of benzene to phenol was achieved on titania incorporated in hydrophobically modified mesocellular siliceous foam (MCF). Titanium oxide nanoparticles entrapped into mesocellular siliceous foam (TiO2@MCF) were prepared by “co-condensation” method using block copolymer as a template. TiO2@MCF was further modified by surface organo-grafting with silylation agent to make it hydrophobic (TiO2@MCF/CH3) and the grafted organic functional groups on the surface of TiO2 were selectively removed by post UV-irradiation to obtain the catalyst (TiO2@MCF/CH3/UV) that has a higher selective activity for benzene oxidation. By modifying the hydrophobicity of the mesoporous siliceous cage environment, both the adsorption of reactants (benzene) and the desorption of the desired products (phenol) on photocatalytic sites can be facilitated with an increase in selectivity and yield of phenol production. The titania nanoparticles incorporated into MCF cage were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The hydrophobic modification of the catalysts was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, water contact angle measurement, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The adsorption isotherms of benzene and phenol on various catalysts suspended in aqueous solution were measured to investigate the effect of hydrophobic MCF cage. The hydrophobically modified TiO2@MCF/CH3/UV sample showed the highest selectivity and yield for the photocatalytic hydroxylation of benzene to phenol in aqueous solution. This could serve as an efficient and green photocatalyst for the selective oxidative conversion of a hydrophobic reactant to a hydrophilic product.
Double shelled titanium dioxide@mesoporous organosilica nanotube as an amphiphilic photoactive nanoreactor for efficient photocatalytic oxidation of styrene

Abstract:In this work, we have proposed a strategy to fabricate double-shell nanotubes as amphiphilic photoactive nanoreactors (HTTBPC) through the ordered hybridization of mesoporous organosilicon (PMO) and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanotubes. Unlike the previous rough composite, the heterogeneous structure established between cobalt-porphyrin functionalized PMO and conventional TiO 2 has a staggered matching band gap, which makes it have excellent light harvesting and high carrier separation ability. This is still unexplored. Interestingly, the prepared photocatalysts exhibited superior activity (99%) and benzaldehyde selectivity (94%) in the oxidation of styrene in water at room temperature, which was 3.8 and 2.8 times higher than that of TiO 2 nanotubes and PMO functionalized with cobalt porphyrin, respectively. It was demonstrated that the strong interaction between cobalt porphyrin PMO and TiO 2 improved the separation of photogenerated carriers and the amphiphilic properties of mesoporous organosilica boosted the adsorption of substrate molecules in water, contributing to the significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity. This work provides a design of high-performance photocatalysts for alkene oxidation under green conditions.

Abstract:N-doped anatase-rutile titanium dioxide (N-TiO2) is a classical semiconductor widely used in environmental remediation. Its photocatalytic performance is typically affected by its morphology, porous structure, and phase composition. Herein, disk-like mesoporous N-TiO2 was prepared by calcining MIL-125(Ti) and melamine matrix at different temperatures in air. The photocatalytic efficiency of the prepared mesoporous N-TiO2 for the photo-oxidation of gaseous benzene under visible-light irradiation was studied. With respect to light absorption and mass transfer, as-prepared N-TiO2 annealed at 500 °C (MM-500) showed the best photocatalytic activity with corresponding photodegradation and mineralization efficiencies of 99.1% and 72.0%, respectively. In addition, MM-500 exhibited excellent reusability and stability in cyclic experiments, in which 84.8% of gaseous benzene could still be photodegraded after 10 experimental cycles. Furthermore, electron spin resonance analysis indicated that •OH and •O2− radicals were the dominating reactive oxygen species during the photo-oxidation process. Their excellent performance suggests that the as-prepared N-TiO2 photocatalysts can be used to eliminate volatile organic compounds.Mesoporous disc-like anatase-rutile mixed phase N-TiO2 was constructed by the calcination of MIL-125(Ti) and melamine matrix in air, which possessed good photodegradtion capability and superior cycling stability for photocatalytic purification of gaseous benzene.

Surface oxygen vacancies promoted photodegradation of benzene on TiO2 film

Abstract:Engineering the bulk and surface oxygen vacancy defects in titania (TiO2) photocatalysts has been proved to bean efficient strategy to improve quantum efficiency. In this work, we report a facile and innovative method to manipulate surficial oxygen defects on TiO2 films using calcium hydride (CaH2) as a reducing agent. Surficial oxygen defect formation was verified by the combinations of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Raman and UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy. The concentration of surficial oxygen vacancy defects could easily be tuned by varying the temperature and duration of the CaH2 treatment. After optimization CaH2 treatment conditions, the activity of TiO2 films in photodegrading benzene under UV light was enhanced by as much as 340%. The mechanism of surficial oxygen vacancy defect enhancing photocatalytic performances of TiO2 film was systematically investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which predict the existence of band bending modelled as a p-n junction between the bulk and the surface layer with oxygen vacancies, thus inhibiting electron-hole recombination, and enabling oxygen transport at different depths for the enhancement of photocatalytic properties.

Abstract:A heterogeneous photocatalyst based on rose bengal functionalized mesoporous silica was synthesized. The photooxidation of cefuroxime 1‐acetoxyethyl ester occurred through the formation of singlet oxygen. The reuse of waste and the use of renewable materials are of great environmental and economic interest. With that in mind, the synthesis of mesoporous silica can be performed using rice husk ash, which is an industrial waste generated in large quantities. This mesoporous material can be functionalized with photoactive molecules, enabling application in photocatalysis. In this work, we used mesoporous silica nanoparticles functionalized with rose bengal dye (RB) for photooxidation reactions of organic molecules, such as the antibiotic cefuroxime 1‐acetoxyethyl ester (cefuroxime axetil). The characterization results showed the formation of one‐dimensional channels with uniform size and two‐dimensional hexagonal arrangement, with surface area and pore diameter of 230 m2 g−1 and 5 nm, respectively. The infrared and UV‐Vis spectroscopy indicated the functionalization of silica with photoactive molecules. Finally, SBA‐15/RB was applied for the photooxidation of ascorbic acid and antibiotic cefuroxime axetil under irradiation with green light, proving to be efficient for the degradation of cefuroxime axetil. Investigation of the reactive oxygen species involved in photodegradation showed that the photooxidation mechanism mainly involves singlet oxygen.

Abstract:Ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous TiO2–SiO2 nanocomposites consisted of anatase TiO2 nanocrystals and amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles, with large mesochannels and high specific surface areas, have been extensively and detailedly evaluated using various cationic dyes (methylene blue, safranin O, crystal violet, brilliant green, basic fuchsin and rhodamine-6G), anionic dyes (acid fuchsin, orange II, reactive brilliant red X3B and acid red 1) and microcystin-LR. We use mesoporous 80TiO2–20SiO2-900 for the degradation of cationic dyes and MC-LR, due to the dominant adsorption of SiOH groups and synergistic role of coupled adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation. For anionic dyes, due to the adsorption results predominantly from TiOH groups, our strategy realizes the enhanced photocatalytic oxidation by strong surface acids and larger available specific surface area. Based on this, we prepared 90TiO2–10SiO2-700 to degrade them. The results show that our samples exhibit excellent degradation activities to all the contaminants, which are much higher than that of P25 photocatalyst. The dyes are not only decolorized promptly but degraded readily as well. It is strongly indicated that our mesoporous nanocomposites are considerably stable and reusable. These results demonstrate that our mesoporous TiO2–SiO2 nanocomposites present extensive and promising application in the fast and highly efficient degradation of various organic pollutants.
Structure Characterization of Tio2-Modified Mesoporous Mcm-41 and Its Photocatalytic Performance for Phoh Degradation

Abstract:A series of TiO2-modified mesoporous sil icate MCM-41 sampleswith variable Ti/Si ratios, where TiO2 existed as single or double layers, have been synthesized from tetrabutyltitana te and template-fr ee MCM-41. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorpti on-desorption at -196 ℃, FT-IR and solid state diffuse reflectance UV-Vis s pectro scopy respectively. It was found that tetrabutyltitanate co-condensation occurr ed with OH groups of MCM-41 leading to Si-O-Ti bonds, so modifying the inner pore surface of MCM-41 after hydrolysis and calcination. The photocatalytic per formance of the TiO2-modified MCM-41 for PhOH degradation was tested, and it was found that the TiO2-modified MCM-41 exhibited high photocatalytic activ ity for oxidizing PhOH to CO2 and H2O.
Nano-TiO2 Decorated Radial-Like Mesoporous Silica: Preparation, Characterization, and Adsorption-Photodegradation Behavior

Abstract:Supported nanocrystalline Ti O 2 with a diameter of 15–30 nm was prepared from previously synthesized radial mesoporous silica（RMS） by a post-synthesis method. In addition, their adsorption-photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of methylene blue（MB） was determined. RMS was tailor-made with the main template of CTAB and the Si O 2 precursor of TEOS through a facile self-assembly process. The structural, morphological and textural properties of the well-designed Ti O 2/RMS samples were characterized.The RMS structure was retained after loading Ti O 2, but its surface area and pore diameter decreased as a result of partial pore blocking. The removal activity of MB for Ti O 2/RMS was significantly higher than that of commercial Ti O 2 nanoparticles. The optimal Ti O 2 loading（20 wt%） on the support could achieve the complete removal of MB within 70 min. The prepared Ti O 2/RMS particles can be easily separated and display good durability after six reaction cycles.

Abstract:The photocatalytic reactivity of one monolayer of methanol on TiO2(110) was measured with the surface sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy in the C-H stretching range, which shows high photon energy dependence. The photocatalytic reactivity was systematically investigated for different active species on TiO2(110), dissociative adsorbed methanol at five-coordinated Ti sites (Ti-5c), methoxy without adsorbed methanol at Ti-5c sites, and methoxy O-b sites. The results show that the methoxy at Ti-5c sites has much higher photocatalytic reactivity than that of dissociative adsorbed methanol at Ti-5c sites, and the methoxy at O-b sites might be inactive. This work demonstrates that methoxy at Ti-5c sites is the most active species on TiO2(110) and suggests that effectively removing surface OH could enhance the photodegradation of surface organics.

Abstract:Based on an acidolysis reaction between titanium n-butoxide and carboxyl (COOH) groups, serial highly dispersed TiO2 photocatalysts were successfully synthesized on COOH-modified mesoporous SBA-15 material. Even after calcined at 550 degrees C to improve the crystallization, the TiO2/SBA-15 products possessed high surface area above 400 m(2) g(-1) that should be attributed to the high porosity of mesoporous SBA-15 and the highly uniform COOH group distribution in mesopores. HRTEM images revealed that TiO2 nanocrystals dispersed well on the surface of SBA-15. The pore channels were partly blocked by TiO2 nanocrystals, resulting in a bimodal pore size distribution in TiO2/SBA-15 compared with SBA-15. XRD and Raman results disclosed the exclusive anatase phase of TiO2 in the photocatalysts. With adjusting the molar ratio of COOH to TB, the TiO2/SBA-15 products displayed different photocatalytic performance using Rhodamine B as probe under UV light. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
