Analysis and Validation of Dual Armature Winding Magnetless Machines with Multi-Torque Component

Abstract:This article proposes a novel dual armature winding magnetless machine (DAWMM) having a double salient structure and concentrated non-overlapping windings for both the stator and rotor parts. The innovation is that both sets of armature windings in the stator and rotor can generate electromagnetic torque independently. The stator winding is injected with pure AC current while the rotor winding is injected with DC-biased current. In this article, the topology and corresponding control system of the proposed DAWMM are given first. The magnetic motive force (MMF), permeance, and air gap flux density of the proposed DAWMM are theoretically derived, and the torque components and operation modes are discussed. Moreover, the electromagnetic characteristics, including the stator and rotor inductance characteristics, back-EMF, torque components, and fault-tolerance are verified by finite element analysis (FEA) and analytical method. Finally, a prototype is designed and tested for experimental validation. The result indicates that the topology and analysis of DAWMMs is valid and DAWMMs have a potential application prospect in safety-critical fields.
