Existence and Instability of Standing Wave for the Two-wave Model with Quadratic Interaction

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the existence and instability of standing wave for a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations arising in the two-wave model with quadratic interaction in higher space dimensions under mass resonance conditions. Here, we eliminate the limitation for the relationship between complex constants $a_{1}$ and $a_{2}$ given in \cite{HOT}, and consider arbitrary real positive constants $a_{1}$ and $a_{2}$. First of all, according to the conservation identities for mass and energy, using the so-called virial type estimate, we obtain that the solution for the Cauchy problem under consideration blows up in finite time in $H^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{N})\times H^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$ with space dimension $N\geq 4$. Next, for space dimension $N$ with $4<N<6$, we establish the existence of the ground state solution for the elliptic equations corresponding to the nonlinear Schrödinger equations under the frequency and mass resonance by adopting variational method, and further achieve the exponential decay at infinity for the ground state. This implies the existence of standing wave for the nonlinear Schrödinger equaitons under consideration. Finally, by defining another constrained minimizing problems for a pair of complex-valued functions, a suitable manifold, referring to the characterization of the standing wave, making appropriate scaling and adopting virial type estimate, we attain the instability of the standing wave for the equations under frequency and mass resonance in space dimension $N$ with $4<N<6$ by virtue of the conservations of mass and energy. Here, we adopt the equivalence of two constrained minimizing problems defined for pairs of complex-valued and real-valued functions $(u,v)$, respectively, when $(u,v)$ is a pair of real-valued functions.

Quantized Vortex Stability and Interaction in the Nonlinear Wave Equation

Abstract:The stability and interaction of quantized vortices in the nonlinear wave equation (NLWE) are investigated both numerically and analytically. A review of the reduced dynamic law governing the motion of vortex centers in the NLWE is provided. The second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the reduced dynamic law are solved analytically for some special initial data. Using 2D polar coordinates, the transversely highly oscillating far field conditions can be efficiently resolved in the phase space, thus giving rise to an efficient and accurate numerical method for the NLWE with non-zero far field conditions. By applying this numerical method to the NLWE, we study the stability of quantized vortices and find numerically that the quantized vortices with winding number m=±1 are dynamically stable, and resp. |m|>1 are dynamically unstable, in the dynamics of NLWE. We then compare numerically quantized vortex interaction patterns of the NLWE with those from the reduced dynamic law qualitatively and quantitatively. Some conclusive findings are obtained, and discussions on numerical and theoretical results are made to provide further understanding of vortex stability and interactions in the NLWE. Finally, the vortex motion under an inhomogeneous potential in the NLWE is also studied.
Modulation Instability and Rogue Waves for Two and Three Dimensional Nonlinear Klein-Gordon Equation.

Abstract:We perform the modulation instability analysis of the 2D and 3D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation. The instability region depends on dispersion and wavenumbers of the plane wave. The N-breathers of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation are constructed directly from its 2 N-solitons obtained in history. The regularity conditions of breathers are established. The dynamic behaviors of breathers of the 2D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation are consistent with modulation instability analysis. Furthermore, by means of the bilinear method together with improved long-wave limit technique, we obtain general high order rogue waves of the 2D and 3D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation. In particular, the first- and second-order rogue waves and lumps of the 2D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation are investigated by using their explicit expressions. We find that their dynamic behaviors are similar to the nonlinear Schr & ouml;dinger equation. Finally, the first-order rational solutions are illustrated for the 3D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation. It is demonstrated that the rogue waves of the 2D and 3D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation always exist by choosing dispersion and wavenumber of plane waves.

Abstract:Spiral waves are striking self-organized coherent structures that organize spatio-temporal dynamics in dissipative, spatially extended systems. In this paper, we provide a conceptual approach to various properties of spiral waves. Rather than studying existence in a specific equation, we study properties of spiral waves in general reaction-diffusion systems. We show that many features of spiral waves are robust and to some extent independent of the specific model analyzed. To accomplish this, we present a suitable analytic framework, spatial radial dynamics, that allows us to rigorously characterize features such as the shape of spiral waves and their eigenfunctions, properties of the linearization, and finite-size effects. We believe that our framework can also be used to study spiral waves further and help analyze bifurcations, as well as provide guidance and predictions for experiments and numerical simulations. From a technical point of view, we introduce non-standard function spaces for the well-posedness of the existence problem which allow us to understand properties of spiral waves using dynamical systems techniques, in particular exponential dichotomies. Using these pointwise methods, we are able to bring tools from the analysis of one-dimensional coherent structures such as fronts and pulses to bear on these inherently two-dimensional defects.

Stability of traveling waves in a nonlinear hyperbolic system approximating a dimer array of oscillators

Abstract:We study a semilinear hyperbolic system of PDEs which arises as a continuum approximation of the discrete nonlinear dimer array model introduced by Hadad, Vitelli and Alu (HVA) in \cite{HVA17}. We classify the system's traveling waves, and study their stability properties. We focus on traveling pulse solutions (``solitons'') on a nontrivial background and moving domain wall solutions (kinks); both arise as heteroclinic connections between spatially uniform equilibrium of a reduced dynamical system. We present analytical results on: nonlinear stability and spectral stability of supersonic pulses, and spectral stability of moving domain walls. Our stability results are in terms of weighted $H^1$ norms of the perturbation, which capture the phenomenon of {\it convective stabilization}; as time advances, the traveling wave ``outruns'' the \underline{growing} disturbance excited by an initial perturbation; the non-trivial spatially uniform equilibria are linearly exponentially unstable. We use our analytical results to interpret phenomena observed in numerical simulations.

The existence of stratified linearly steady two-mode water waves with stagnation points

Abstract:This paper focuses on the analysis of stratified steady periodic water waves that contain stagnation points. The initial step involves transforming the free-boundary problem into a quasilinear pseudodifferential equation through a conformal mapping technique, resulting in a periodic function of a single variable. By utilizing the theorems developed by Crandall and Rabinowitz, we establish the existence and formal stability of small-amplitude steady periodic capillary-gravity water waves in the presence of stratified linear flows. Notably, the stability of bifurcation solution curves is strongly influenced by the stratified nature of the system. Additionally, as the Bernoulli's function $\beta$ approaches critical values, we observe that the linearized problem exhibits a two-dimensional kernel. Consequently, we apply a bifurcation theorem due to Kielhöfer that incorporates multiple-dimensional kernels and parameters, which enables us to establish the existence of two-mode water waves. As far as we know, the two-mode water waves in stratified flow are first constructed by us. Finally, we demonstrate the presence of internal stagnation points within these waves.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with combined power-type nonlinearities and a partial harmonic potential. In the L2-supercritical case, we obtain the existence and stability of standing waves. Our results are complements to the results of Carles and Il'yasov's artical, where orbital stability of standing waves have been studied for the 2D Schrödinger equation with combined nonlinearities and harmonic potential.

Abstract:The solutions of multi-breather and high-order rogue waves for the Hirota equation are systematically constructed on the elliptic function background, which were not previously studied. The spectral problem with the elliptic function potential is solved by the modified squared wave function approach and the traveling wave transformation. The fundamental solution of spectral problem is expressed in terms of theta functions. By the elementary Darboux transformation, the multi-breather solutions on different elliptic function backgrounds are constructed including the general breathers, Kuznetsov–Ma breathers and Akhmediev breathers, and their interaction patterns are exhibited by several examples. At branch points for breather solutions, higher-order rogue wave solutions on the elliptic function background are presented by the general Darboux transformation and some limit techniques. It is expected that these nonlinear dynamics of the breathers and rogue waves on the periodic background may help explain the isolated steep wave events in deep ocean or other nonlinear dispersive systems.

This wave configuration accommodates the ordered trains of the modified Camassa-Holm-Novikov-peaked solitary solution. With the application of conservation laws and the monotonicity property of the localized energy functionals, we prove the orbital stability of this wave profile in the H 1 ( R ) energy space according to the modulation argument.

Abstract:We apply a velocity-field approach to investigate the interaction between spiral waves and the travelling wave modulation of system excitability which leads to a prediction: the direction of the straight-line drift of spiral waves is linearly adjusted by the propagation direction of the travelling waves. Direct numerical computations of the Oregonator model and the formulas of drift-velocity field confirm the validity and robustness of our theoretical prediction.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the complete integrable Wadati–Konno–Ichikawa equation, which is an important integrable model with physical background. Based on the known hodograph transformation, we give an alternative two-component nonlinear system of this equation. By constructing its special generalized -fold Darboux transformation, we obtain various location-manageable localized wave solutions, like higher-order rogue wave and periodic wave solutions with smooth, singular and singular-loop structures. It is found that the rogue wave can show a singular-loop structure when the special parameters are selected. For the first-order exact solutions, we analyze and summarize the reasons for singular structures when the plane wave amplitude reaches a certain value. Furthermore, we also discuss and summarize mixed interaction structures of diverse localized waves. In particular, these abundant structures can be managed to an arbitrary location by adjusting some control parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a three-component AB model, which characterizes the baroclinic instability processes in the geophysical flows. Via the Darboux transformation, the breather solutions are derived. Then, we study the state transition and find that the breather solutions can be transformed into different kinds of stationary nonlinear waves, including the anti-dark soliton, multi-peak soliton, M-shaped soliton, W-shaped solitons and periodic waves. Moreover, by virtue of the second-order transformed solution, various nonlinear wave complexes are presented. Finally, we unveil the relationship between the modulation instability and state transition and show the existence regions for the transformed waves.

Abstract:By using new estimate methods, together' with the multiplier approach, the trace theorem, the Poincare inequality, etc., we obtain energy decay rates for wave equations with Wentzell boundary conditions and boundary dampings, which depend on the regularities of initial data. The difficulty for stability of the Wentzell problems is caused by the second-order differential operators on boundaries. For dealing with the uncontrollable boundary terms, we construct an auxiliary system and transfer them into some controllable high-order energy terms. The idea here for handling this type of boundary problems is new and the derived results in this paper present an answer to the open problem [3] in a special case.

Abstract:We investigate the behavior of spiral waves in a quasi-two-dimensional spatial open reactor using Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. The goal of this study is to answer two questions raised recently: Can a system sustain a stable long-wavelength modulated spiral? What causes the transition from spiral to defect-mediated turbulence? Our experimental results show that in a certain range of control parameters, a sustained long-wavelength modulated spiral is stable. The amplitude and the wavelength of modulations increase with the control parameter. As the latter is increased to across a threshold, defects are generated far away from the spiral center as a result of the neighboring two wave fronts being too close.

Abstract:Rossby-Haurwitz (RH) waves are important explicit solutions of the incompressible Euler equation on a two-dimensional rotating sphere. In this paper, we prove the orbital stability of degree-2 RH waves, which confirms a conjecture proposed by A. Constantin and P. Germain in [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 245, 587-644, 2022]. The proofs are based on a variational approach, with the main challenge being to establish suitable variational characterizations for the solutions under consideration. In this process, the set of rearrangements of a fixed function plays a vital role. We also apply our approach to the stability analysis of degree-1 RH waves, Arnold-type flows, and zonal flows with monotone absolute vorticity.

Abstract:Motivated by earlier studies of artificial perceptions of light called phosphenes, we analyze traveling wave solutions in a chain of periodically forced coupled nonlinear oscillators modeling this phenomenon. We examine the discrete model problem in its co-traveling frame and systematically obtain the corresponding traveling waves in one spatial dimension. Direct numerical simulations as well as linear stability analysis are employed to reveal the parameter regions where the traveling waves are stable, and these waves are, in turn, connected to the standing waves analyzed in earlier work. We also consider a two-dimensional extension of the model and demonstrate the robust evolution and stability of planar fronts and annihilation of radial ones. Finally, we show that solutions that initially feature two symmetric fronts with bulged centers evolve in qualitative agreement with experimental observations of phosphenes.
