Abstract:With the Maxwell's speed distribution law,we analyze quantitatively some real problems.For example,we explain why there is no atmosphere on the moon and why there is a few concentrations of gases with small molecular mass on the earth's atmosphere,etc.,which should enhance the enthusiasm of students for learning physics.

Abstract:This article introduces the scope of the law of the Maxwell''s velocity distribution. The law of Maxwell''s velocity distribution is used to discuss the velocity distribution function of gas molecules in one dimension, two dimensions, and three dimensions, respectively. The velocity distribution function of charged particles of plasma in uniform magnetic field is also demonstrated. The students can further understand the law of the Maxwell''s velocity distribution. Thus, it can help the devel-opment of resolving the actual problem based on the learned knowledge.

Abstract:To avoid the complication arising from the relativistic limitation of speed, at first, the momentum distribution formula of ideal gases is presented instead of speed. Then the relativistic modification on the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution laws of speed is discussed. Analytic and numerical simulations show that this kind of modification has no observable effect. In other words, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution laws studied in university physics are good enough to describe the practical situations. However we cannot make a conclusion, based on these approximate formula, that molecules of ideal gas can move faster than the speed of light in vacuum.

Abstract:This article contains a digest of the theory of electromagnetism and a review of the transformation between inertial frames, especially under low speed limits. The covariant nature of the Maxwell's equations is explained using the conventional language. We show that even under low speed limits, the relativistic effects should not be neglected to get a self-consistent theory of the electromagnetic fields, unless the intrinsic dynamics of these fields has been omitted completely. The quasi-static limits, where the relativistic effects can be partly neglected are also reviewed, to clarify some common misunderstandings and imprecise use of the theory in presence of moving media and other related situations. The discussions presented in this paper provide a clear view of why classical electromagnetic theory is relativistic in its essence.

Abstract:Despite its importance, in the introductory disciplines of exact science courses, the demonstration of the Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution law is not explained, only its final equation is shown. In order to fill this deficiency, in this work we try to show in detail, in a very didactic way, the demonstration of such a law. For this, the kinetic theory of gases is initially introduced. The good agreement of the Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution law with experimental results and its applicability limit is also presented.

Abstract:This article derives the probability density function ψξ;x,x'  of the resulting speed ξ  from the collision of two particles with speeds x  and x' . This function had been left unsolved for about 150 years. Then uses two approaches to obtain the Maxwell speed distribution: (1) Numerical iteration: using the equation Pnewξ=0∞0∞ψξ;x,x' ∙Poldx∙Poldx' dxdx'   to get the new speed distribution from the old speed distribution. Also, after 9 iterations, the distribution converges to the Maxwell speed distribution. (2) Analytical integration: using the Maxwell speed distribution as the Poldx , and then getting Pnewξ  from the above integration. The result of Pnewξ  from analytical integration is proved to be exactly the Maxwell speed distribution.

Abstract:The Maxwell-Boltzmann speed distribution is the probability distribution that describes the speeds of the particles of ideal gases. The Maxwell-Boltzmann speed distribution is valid for both un-mixed particles (one type of particle) and mixed particles (two types of particles). For mixed particles, both types of particles follow the Maxwell-Boltzmann speed distribution. Also, the most probable speed is inversely proportional to the square root of the mass. This paper proves the Maxwell-Boltzmann speed distribution and the speed ratio of mixed particles using computer-generated data based on Newton’s law of motion. To achieve this, this paper derives the probability density function ψ^ab(u_a;v_a,v_b)  of the speed u_a of the particle with mass M_a after the collision of two particles with mass M_a in speed v_a and mass M_b in speed v_b. The function ψ^ab(u_a;v_a,v_b)  is obtained through a unique procedure that considers (1) the randomness of the relative direction before a collision by an angle α. (2) the randomness of the direction after the collision by another independent angle. The function ψ^ab(u_a;v_a,v_b) is used in the equation below for the numerical iterations to get new distributions P_new^a(u_a) from old distributions P_old^a(v_a), and repeat with P_old^a(v_a)=P_new^a(v_a), where n_a is the fraction of particles with mass M_a.   P_new^1(u_1)=n_1 ∫_0^∞ ∫_0^∞ ψ^11(u_1;v_1,v’_1) P_old^1(v_1) P_old^1(v’_1) dv_1 dv’_1                           +n_2 ∫_0^∞ ∫_0^∞ ψ^12(u_1;v_1,v_2) P_old^1(v_1) P_old^2(v_2) dv_1 dv_2 P_new^2(u_2)=n_1 ∫_0^∞ ∫_0^∞ ψ^21(u_2;v_2,v_1) P_old^2(v_2) P_old^1(v_1) dv_2 dv_1                           +n_2 ∫_0^∞ ∫_0^∞ ψ^22(u_2;v_2,v’_2) P_old^2(v_2) P_old^2(v’_2) dv_2 dv’_2 The final distributions converge to the Maxwell-Boltzmann speed distributions. Moreover, the square of the root-mean-square speed from the final distribution is inversely proportional to the particle masses as predicted by Avogadro’s law.

Abstract:A computer simulation of a two-dimensional ideal gas has been studied in order to observe the time development of the speed distribution function. The results described here are effective in demonstrating to naturally skeptical freshmen that the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution indeed occurs in nature. The results are also useful to demonstrate the statistical nature of the second law of thermodynamics.

Abstract:Maxwell's velocity distribution is known to be universally valid across systems and phases. Here we present a new and general derivation that uses the central limit theorem (CLT) of the probability theory. This essentially uses the idea that repeated intermolecular collisions introduce randomness in the velocity change in the individual components of the velocity vector, leading to, by the CLT, a Gaussian distribution. To complete the derivation, we next show that the mean-square velocity or the standard deviation follows exactly from Boltzmann's formula relating entropy to the density of states, thus avoiding the use of the ideal gas equation of state explicitly. We furthermore prove the Maxwell velocity distribution for a system of harmonic oscillators. This derivation provides a further insight into the origin of Boltzmann's constant in the Maxwell velocity distribution and also in the equipartition theorem. We propose that this derivation provides an approach that explains the universality of Maxwell Gaussian distribution.

Abstract:The Maxwell-Boltzmann (MB) distribution for velocities in ideal gases is usually defined between zero and infinity. A double truncated MB distribution is here introduced and the probability density function, the distribution function, the average value, the rth moment about the origin, the root-mean-square speed and the variance are evaluated. Two applications are presented: (i) a numerical relationship between root-mean-square speed and temperature, and (ii) a modification of the formula for the Jeans escape flux of molecules from an atmosphere.

Abstract:Two relativistic distributions which generalizes the Maxwell Boltzman (MB) distribution are analyzed: the relativistic MB and the Maxwell-J{ü}ttner (MJ) distribution. For the two distributions we derived in terms of special functions the constant of normalization, the average value, the second moment about the origin, the variance, the mode, the asymptotic behavior, approximate expressions for the average value as function of the temperature and the connected inverted expressions for the temperature as function of the average value. Two astrophysical applications to the synchrotron emission in presence of the magnetic field and the relativistic electrons are presented.

Abstract:It is well known that the macroscopic Maxwell' s equations can be obtained from the corresponding microscopic or atomic equations by a proper averaging process. The purpose of this paper is to present the macroscopic Maxwell' s equations which are valid in all regions of space, including an interface between two different media; and the boundary conditions can naturally emerge from the macroscopic equations as an effect of average of the microscopic Maxwell' s equations. In addition, the application of the unit step functions and the Dirac delta function to our discussion not only permits great mathematical simplicity but also gives rise to convenient physical concepts for the description and representation of the actual fields in the vicinity of the interface.

Abstract:Beginning from the integral forms of the four physics laws, we derive Maxwell’s equations for a mechano-driven, slow, nonuniform moving speed media system based on Galilean space and time, thus presenting a new approach for solving the electromagnetic field problems in a moving system with acceleration. For the electromagnetism of macro-objects on Earth, we believe that the relativistic effect can be generally ignored. Different from the classical texts on electrodynamics, which assumes motion is a constant speed along a straight line in the inertial frame, our theory describes the electromagnetism of the media systems in the noninertial frame with acceleration and time-dependent volume, shape, and boundary. Most importantly, the expanded Maxwell’s equations are solved through mathematical means. Our objective is to study the dynamics of coupling among the mechano-electric-magnetic multifields. Lastly, the expansion of the boundary conditions at the nanoscale boundaries and the application of the Maxwell’s equations in a lumped circuit system are discussed.

Abstract:The article presents a simple, rigorous approach to introduce electromagnetic theory derived from a new, fundamental form of Gausss law using only the basic spacetime transformation relations of special relativity. More advanced concepts of relativistic mechanics, such as the transformation of mass, momentum, and force, are not necessary in this development, resulting in a simple theory. The material fills an educational need to introduce the modern theory of relativity into the teaching of engineering electromagnetics. The approach is suitable for a senior (even a junior) undergraduate and an introductory graduate engineering class, depending on the level of depth and rigor.

Abstract:We consider a class of nonlinear Boltzmann equations describing return to thermal equilibrium in a gas of colliding particles suspended in a thermal medium. We study solutions in the space \({L^{1}(\Gamma^{(1)},d\lambda),}\) where \({\Gamma^{(1)}=\mathbb{R}^{3} \times \mathbb{T}^3}\) is the one-particle phase space and \({d\lambda= d^3 v d^3 x}\) is the Liouville measure on Γ(1). Special solutions of these equations, called “Maxwellians,” are spatially homogenous static Maxwell velocity distributions at the temperature of the medium. We prove that, for dilute gases, the solutions corresponding to smooth initial conditions in a weighted L 1-space converge to a Maxwellian in \({L^{1}(\Gamma^{(1)},d\lambda)}\) , exponentially fast in time.
