The covariant nature of the Maxwell's equations is explained using the conventional language. We show that even under low speed limits, the relativistic effects should not be neglected to get a self-consistent theory of the electromagnetic fields, unless the intrinsic dynamics of these fields has been omitted completely. The quasi-static limits, where the relativistic effects can be partly neglected are also reviewed, to clarify some common misunderstandings and imprecise use of the theory in presence of moving media and other related situations. The discussions presented in this paper provide a clear view of why classical electromagnetic theory is relativistic in its essence.

Abstract:To avoid the complication arising from the relativistic limitation of speed, at first, the momentum distribution formula of ideal gases is presented instead of speed. Then the relativistic modification on the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution laws of speed is discussed. Analytic and numerical simulations show that this kind of modification has no observable effect. In other words, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution laws studied in university physics are good enough to describe the practical situations. However we cannot make a conclusion, based on these approximate formula, that molecules of ideal gas can move faster than the speed of light in vacuum.

Abstract:We introduce the theory of thermodynamic relativity, a unified framework for describing both entropies and velocities, and their respective disciplines of thermodynamics and kinematics, which share a surprisingly identical description with relativity. This is the first study to generalize relativity in a thermodynamic context, leading naturally to anisotropic and nonlinear adaptations of relativity; thermodynamic relativity constitutes a new path of generalization, as compared to the traditional passage from special to general theory based on curved spacetime. We show that entropy and velocity are characterized by three identical postulates, providing the basis of a broader framework of relativity: (1) no privileged reference frame with zero value; (2) existence of an invariant and fixed value for all reference frames; and (3) existence of stationarity. The postulates lead to a unique way of addition for entropies and for velocities, called kappa addition. The theory provides a systematic method of constructing a generalized framework of the theory of relativity, based on the kappa addition, fully consistent with both thermodynamics and kinematics. From the generality of the kappa addition, we focus on the cases corresponding to linear special relativity. Then, we show how the thermodynamic relativity leads to the addition of entropies in nonextensive thermodynamics and the addition of velocities in the isotropic special relativity of Einstein, as in two extreme cases, while intermediate cases correspond to an anisotropic adaptation of relativity. Using thermodynamic relativity for velocities, we construct the anisotropic special relativity (asymmetric Lorentz transformation, nondiagonal metric, energy momentum velocity relations). Then, we discuss the consequences of the anisotropy in known relativistic effects: (1) matter antimatter asymmetry, (2) time dilation, and (3) Doppler effect.

Existence of solutions to Dirichlet boundary value problems of the stationary relativistic Boltzmann equation

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Dirichlet boundary value problem of steady-state relativistic Boltzmann equation in half-line with hard potential model, given the data for the outgoing particles at the boundary and a relativistic global Maxwellian with nonzero macroscopic velocities at the far field. We first explicitly address the sound speed for the relativistic Maxwellian in the far field, according to the eigenvalues of an operator based on macro-micro decomposition. Then we demonstrate that the solvability of the problem varies with the Mach number $\mathcal{M}^\infty$. If $\mathcal{M}^\infty<-1$, a unique solution exists connecting the Dirichlet data and the far field Maxwellian when the boundary data is sufficiently close to the Maxwellian. If $\mathcal{M}^\infty>-1$, such a solution exists only if the outgoing boundary data is small and satisfies certain solvability conditions. The proof is based on the macro-micro decomposition of solutions combined with an artificial damping term. A singular in velocity (at $p_1=0$ and $|p|\gg 1$) and spatially exponential decay weight is chosen to carry out the energy estimates. The result extends the previous work [Ukai, Yang, Yu, Comm. Math. Phys. 236, 373-393, 2003] to the relativistic problem.

Theory of relativistic Brownian motion: the (1+1)-dimensional case

Abstract:We construct a theory for the (1+1)-dimensional Brownian motion in a viscous medium, which is (i) consistent with Einstein's theory of special relativity and (ii) reduces to the standard Brownian motion in the Newtonian limit case. In the first part of this work the classical Langevin equations of motion, governing the nonrelativistic dynamics of a free Brownian particle in the presence of a heat bath (white noise), are generalized in the framework of special relativity. Subsequently, the corresponding relativistic Langevin equations are discussed in the context of the generalized Ito (prepoint discretization rule) versus the Stratonovich (midpoint discretization rule) dilemma: It is found that the relativistic Langevin equation in the Hänggi-Klimontovich interpretation (with the postpoint discretization rule) is the only one that yields agreement with the relativistic Maxwell distribution. Numerical results for the relativistic Langevin equation of a free Brownian particle are presented.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system in space dimension three. For a class of large initial data, we prove the global existence of classical solution with sharp decay estimates. The initial Maxwell field is allowed to be arbitrarily large and the initial density distribution is assumed to be small and decay with rate $$(1+|x|+|v|)^{-9-}$$ . In particular, there is no restriction on the support of the initial data.
Theory of relativistic Brownian motion: the (1+3) -dimensional case

Abstract:A theory for (1+3) -dimensional relativistic Brownian motion under the influence of external force fields is put forward. Starting out from a set of relativistically covariant, but multiplicative Langevin equations we describe the relativistic stochastic dynamics of a forced Brownian particle. The corresponding Fokker-Planck equations are studied in the laboratory frame coordinates. In particular, the stochastic integration prescription--i.e., the discretization rule dilemma--is elucidated (prepoint discretization rule versus midpoint discretization rule versus postpoint discretization rule). Remarkably, within our relativistic scheme we find that the postpoint rule (or the transport form) yields the only Fokker-Planck dynamics from which the relativistic Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics is recovered as the stationary solution. The relativistic velocity effects become distinctly more pronounced by going from one to three spatial dimensions. Moreover, we present numerical results for the asymptotic mean-square displacement of a free relativistic Brownian particle moving in 1+3 dimensions.

Abstract:Two relativistic distributions which generalizes the Maxwell Boltzman (MB) distribution are analyzed: the relativistic MB and the Maxwell-J{ü}ttner (MJ) distribution. For the two distributions we derived in terms of special functions the constant of normalization, the average value, the second moment about the origin, the variance, the mode, the asymptotic behavior, approximate expressions for the average value as function of the temperature and the connected inverted expressions for the temperature as function of the average value. Two astrophysical applications to the synchrotron emission in presence of the magnetic field and the relativistic electrons are presented.

Abstract:This article introduces the scope of the law of the Maxwell''s velocity distribution. The law of Maxwell''s velocity distribution is used to discuss the velocity distribution function of gas molecules in one dimension, two dimensions, and three dimensions, respectively. The velocity distribution function of charged particles of plasma in uniform magnetic field is also demonstrated. The students can further understand the law of the Maxwell''s velocity distribution. Thus, it can help the devel-opment of resolving the actual problem based on the learned knowledge.
Maximum principles for the relativistic heat equation

Abstract:The classical heat equation is incompatible with relativity, since the strong maximum principle allows for disturbances to propagate instantaneously. Some authors have proposed limiting the propagation speed by adding a linear hyperbolic correction term, but then even a weak maximum principle fails to hold. We study a more recently introduced relativistic heat equation, which replaces the Laplace operator by a quasilinear elliptic operator, and show that strong and weak maximum principles hold for stationary and time-varying solutions, respectively, as well as for sub- and supersolutions. Moreover, by transforming the equation into an equivalent form, related to the mean curvature operator, we prove even stronger tangency and comparison principles.

Abstract:Besides two fundamental postulates, (i) the principle of relativity and (ii) the constancy of the speed of light in all inertial frames of reference, the special theory of relativity uses another assumption. This other assumption concerns the Euclidean structure of gravity-free space and the homogeneity of gravity-free time in the usual inertial coordinate system. Introducing the primed inertial coordinate system, in addition to the usual inertial coordinate system, for each inertial frame of reference, we assume the Euclidean structures of gravity-free space and time in the primed inertial coordinate system and their generalized Finslerian structures in the usual inertial coordinate system. We combine the alternative assumption with the two postulates (i) and (ii) to modify the special theory of relativity. The modified special relativity theory involves two versions of the light speed, infinite c′ in the primed inertial coordinate system and finite c in the usual inertial coordinate system. It also involves the c′-type Galilean transformation between any two primed inertial coordinate systems and the localized Lorentz transformation between two corresponding usual inertial coordinate systems. Since all our experimental data are collected and expressed in the usual inertial coordinate system, the physical principle is: the c′-type Galilean invariance in the primed inertial coordinate system plus the transformation from the primed inertial coordinate system to the usual inertial coordinate system. This principle is applied to a reformulation of mechanics, field theory and quantum field theory. Relativistic mechanics in the usual inertial coordinate system is unchanged, while field theory is developed and divergence-free. Any c′-type Galilean-invariant field system can be quantized by using the canonical quantization method in the primed inertial coordinate system. We establish a transformation law for quantized field systems as they are transformed from the primed to the usual inertial coordinate system. It is shown that the modified special relativity theory, together with quantum mechanics, leads to a convergent and invariant quantum field theory, in full agreement with experimental facts. The formulation of this quantum field theory does not demand departures from the concepts such as local Lorentz invariance in the usual inertial coordinate system, locality of interactions, and local or global gauge symmetries.

Abstract:Using the recently proposed covariant framework of general relativistic stochastic mechanics and stochastic thermodynamics, we proved the detailed and integral fluctuation theorems in curved spacetime. The time-reversal transformation is described as a transformation from the perspective of future-directed observer to that of the corresponding past-directed observer, which enables us to maintain general covariance throughout the construction. The result presented in this work may be applied in understanding the origin of irreversibility in macroscopic processes in the presence of relativistic gravity, as in most astrophysical or cosmological processes.

A Stochastic Approach to Maxwell Velocity Distribution via Central Limit Theorem and Boltzmann's Entropy Formula

Abstract:Maxwell's velocity distribution is known to be universally valid across systems and phases. Here we present a new and general derivation that uses the central limit theorem (CLT) of the probability theory. This essentially uses the idea that repeated intermolecular collisions introduce randomness in the velocity change in the individual components of the velocity vector, leading to, by the CLT, a Gaussian distribution. To complete the derivation, we next show that the mean-square velocity or the standard deviation follows exactly from Boltzmann's formula relating entropy to the density of states, thus avoiding the use of the ideal gas equation of state explicitly. We furthermore prove the Maxwell velocity distribution for a system of harmonic oscillators. This derivation provides a further insight into the origin of Boltzmann's constant in the Maxwell velocity distribution and also in the equipartition theorem. We propose that this derivation provides an approach that explains the universality of Maxwell Gaussian distribution.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a theory of Special Relativity valid for the entire speed range without the assumption of constant speed of light. Two particles species are defined, one species of particles have rest frames with rest mass, and another species of particles do not have rest frame and can not define rest mass. We prove that for the particles which have rest frames, the Galilean transformation is the only linear transformation of space-time that allows infinite speed of particle motion. Hence without any assumption, an upper bound of speed is required for all non-Galilean linear transformations. We then present a novel derivation of the mass-velocity and the mass-energy relations in the framework of relativistic dynamics, which is solely based on the principle of relativity and basic definitions of relativistic momentum and energy. The generalized Lorentz transformation is then determined. The new relativistic formulas are not related directly to the speed of light $c$, but are replaced by a Relativity Constant $C_R$ which is an universal speed constant of the Nature introduced in relativistic dynamics. Particles having rest mass are called tardyons moving slower than $C_R$. Particles having neither rest frames nor rest mass are called $tachyons$ moving faster than $C_R$, and with the real mass-velocity relation $m=|\vec{p}_\infty |(v^2-C_R^2)^{-1/2}$ where $\vec{p}_\infty $ is the finite momentum of tachyon at infinite speed. Moreover, the particles with constant-speed $C_R$, also having neither rest frames nor rest mass, are called $constons$. For all particles, $p^2=\vec{p}^2-({E^2}/{C_R^2})$ remains invariant under transformation between inertia frames. The invariant reads $p^2=-m_0^2C_R^2 <0$ for tardyons, $p^2 =0$ for constons and $p^2=|\vec{p}_\infty|^2 >0$ for tachyons, respectively.

Abstract:Though the Maxwell's equations can be written in a covariant form,the electromagnetism in the media is not superficially Lorentz covariant in most text books because of the non-covariant constitutive relations.In this paper,we listed different forms of Maxwell's equations in the media,and discussed the similarities and differences between the two widely used forms Minkowski formulation and Chu formulation.The spatial average method was used to analyze relevant laws on microscopic polarization and magnetization,and the Lorentz covariant form of constitutive equations was given.We obtained the covariant theory of electromagnetism in the media.The macroscopic method we used could make up for the deficiencies of non-relativistic microscopic treatments.Finally,we generalized the wave equation in media to a Lorentz covariant form,checked the relativistic velocity addition formula of light,and generalized the formula of the Doppler shift.

Abstract:The general covariant Fokker-Planck equations associated with the two different versions of covariant Langevin equation in Part I of this series of work are derived, both lead to the same reduced Fokker-Planck equation for the non-normalized one particle distribution function (1PDF). The relationship between various distribution functions is clarified in this process. Several macroscopic quantities are introduced by use of the 1PDF, and the results indicate an intimate connection with the description in relativistic kinetic theory. The concept of relativistic equilibrium state of the heat reservoir is also clarified, and, under the working assumption that the Brownian particle should approach the same equilibrium distribution as the heat reservoir in the long time limit, a general covariant version of Einstein relation arises.

Abstract:Contemporary relativity theory is restricted in two points: (1) a use of the Riemannian space-time geometry and (2) a use of inadequate (nonrelativistic) concepts. Reasons of these restrictions are analysed in [1]. Eliminating these restrictions the relativity theory is generalized on the case of non-Riemannian (nonaxiomatizable) space-time geometry. Taking into account a progress of a geometry and introducing adequate relativistic concepts, the elementary particle dynamics is generalized on the case of arbitrary space-time geometry. A use of adequate relativistic concepts admits one to formulate the simple demonstrable dynamics of particles.

Abstract:'Relativistic thermodynamics' should be understood not as a generalization of a non-relativistic theory but as an application of a general thermodynamic framework, neutral as to spacetime setting and allowing arbitrary conserved quantities, to the specific case of relativity. That framework gives an unambiguous result as to the thermodynamics of relativistically moving systems (an answer coinciding with Einstein's, and Planck's, original results.) Thermodynamic temperature is unambiguously defined as rate of change of energy with entropy at constant momentum; that said, its operational significance is limited and other measures of energy/entropy covariance, which incorporate momentum transfer, are often more useful.
