Abstract:The case study is one of the preferred research methods in Business Management field due two main reasons, i) it is recommended for exploring new themes, subjects, relations, or contexts, and ii) it helps the researcher to build theory from analyzed case(s). Despite the extensive contributions from different authors in management research for addressing the case study method, the definition, constitution, and operationalization of evidence analyses are still not fully clear. This research has as goal to fulfil this gap in the research methods literature by defining, constituting, and guiding researchers in operationalizing the evidence analyses for case study research. In this research, the evidence concept was triangulated from Forensic Sciences in order to achieve a more specific and detailed definition. The notions of quality and types of evidence are revisited. Thus, evidence from empirical case studies is analyzed aiming to provide its constitution. The manuscript offers a guideline for researchers in the case study method for better identifying, gathering, analyzing, and presenting evidence found from empirical research.

Abstract:Evidence-informed decision making is one of the most common, objective and important health policy research methods used by policy makers. Its purpose is to promote the application and dissemination of health policy and system research knowledge for changing traditional and subjective models of health policy making in order to improve national and regional health systems. There are three elements which will influence the effectiveness of health policy making, i.e. research evidence, available health resources and value of policy formulation. The paper introduces some pragmatic evidence-based approaches, especially the systematic reviews, priority setting and a combined approach matrix (CAM). Systematic reviews have strong impact on the decision process for policy makers. The author hopes that evidence-informed methods will be increasingly applied and developed in China's health policy research.

Abstract:Undertaking a review of the literature is an important part of any research project. The researcher both maps and assesses the relevant intellectual territory in order to specify a research question which will further develop the knowledge base. However, traditional ‘narrative’ reviews frequently lack thoroughness, and in many cases are not undertaken as genuine pieces of investigatory science. Consequently they can lack a means for making sense of what the collection of studies is saying. These reviews can be biased by the researcher and often lack rigour. Furthermore, the use of reviews of the available evidence to provide insights and guidance for intervention into operational needs of practitioners and policymakers has largely been of secondary importance. For practitioners, making sense of a mass of often‐contradictory evidence has become progressively harder. The quality of evidence underpinning decision‐making and action has been questioned, for inadequate or incomplete evidence seriously impedes policy formulation and implementation. In exploring ways in which evidence‐informed management reviews might be achieved, the authors evaluate the process of systematic review used in the medical sciences. Over the last fifteen years, medical science has attempted to improve the review process by synthesizing research in a systematic, transparent, and reproducible manner with the twin aims of enhancing the knowledge base and informing policymaking and practice. This paper evaluates the extent to which the process of systematic review can be applied to the management field in order to produce a reliable knowledge stock and enhanced practice by developing context‐sensitive research. The paper highlights the challenges in developing an appropriate methodology.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To present the history and potential for development of evidence-based (EB) social work in China.STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: The conception and methodology of EB social work is a potential strategy to support high quality development of social work in China. This article documents and analyzes the progress of EB social work in China. We focus on current research, reasons, challenges, and strategies.RESULTS: EB social work started late in China. The number of EB social work literature and systematic reviews has increased since 2004. The development of EB social work has been uneven nationally with few practitioners and decision makers involved. However, more and more social work researchers received training in evidence-based practice through national workshops and conferences.CONCLUSION: EB social work faced various challenges, but there are now more opportunities for EB social work development in China. Researchers, practitioners, managers and decision makers are encouraged to work together to establish a thorough methodological system and use existing evidence as much as possible when carrying out social work programs and services.

[Evidence-based Chinese medicine：theory and practice]

Abstract:The introduction and popularization of evidence-based medicine has opened up a new research field of clinical efficacy evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), produced new research ideas and methods, and promoted the progress of clinical research of TCM. After about 20 years assiduous study and earnest practice, the evidence based evaluation method and technique, which conforms to the characteristics of TCM theory and practice, has been developing continuously. Evidence-based Chinese medicine (EBCM) has gradually formed and become an important branch of evidence-based medicine. The basic concept of evidence-based Chinese medicine: EBCM is an applied discipline, following the theory and methodology of evidence-based medicine, to collect, evaluate, produce, transform the evidence of effectiveness, safety and economy of TCM, to reveal the feature and regular pattern of TCM taking effect, and to guide the development of clinical guidelines, clinical pathways and health decisions. The effects and achievements of EBCM development: secondary studies mainly based on systematic review/Meta-analysis were extensively carried out; clinical efficacy studies mainly relying on randomized controlled trials grew rapidly; clinical safety evaluations based on real world study have been conducted; methodological researches mainly focused on study quality control deepened gradually; internationalization researches mainly on report specifications have got some breakthroughs; standardization researches based on treatment specification were strengthened gradually; the research team and talents with the characteristics of inter-disciplinary have been steadily increased. A number of high-quality research findings have been published at international well-known journals; the clinical efficacy and safety evidence of TCM has been increased; the level of clinical rational use of TCM has been improved; a large number of Chinese patent medicines with big market have been cultured. The future missions of EBCM mainly consist of four categories (scientific research, methodology and standard, platform construction and personnel training) with nine tasks. ①Carry out systematic reviews to systematically collect clinical trial reports of TCM and establish database of clinical evidence of TCM; ②Carry out evidence transformation research to lay the foundation for the development of clinical diagnosis and treatment guidelines, clinical pathways of TCM, and for the screening of basic drug list and medical insurance list, and for the policy-making relevant to TCM; ③Conduct researches to evaluate the advantages and effective regular patterns of TCM and form the evidence chain of TCM efficacy; ④Carry out researches for the safety evaluation of TCM, and provide evidence supporting the rational and safe use of TCM in clinical practice; ⑤Conduct researches on methodology of EBCM and provide method for developing high quality evidence; ⑥Carry out researches to develop standards and norms of TCM, and to form methods, standards, specifications and technical systems; ⑦Establish data management platform for evidence-based evaluation of TCM, and promote data sharing; ⑧Build international academic exchange platform to promote international cooperation and mutual recognition of EBCM research; ⑨Carry out education and popularization activities of evidence-based evaluation methods, and train undergraduate students, graduate students, clinical healthcare providers and practitioners of TCM. The development of EBCM, as it was, not only promoted the transformation of clinical research and decision-making mode of TCM, contributed to the modernization and internationalization of TCM, but also enriched the connotation of Evidence-based Medicine.

Abstract:As a science which focuses on evidence,the decision making process of evidence medicine encounters an opportunity for development in the big data era.The starting point is shifting forward from evidence to data.The big data technology is playing an active role in evidence's collection,process and utilization.Evidence is more objective,righteous,authentic,transparent and easier to collect.Thus,to initiate evidence-based medicine research in the big data era and to structure an evidence-based medicine intelligent service platform,a full-scaled strategy should be developed in order to improve the quality of evidence.To promote the complete publicity of clinical research data,structuralized clinical data standard should be constructed.To provide a pathway to patients' follow-up data,portable and wearable monitoring devices should be popularized.To avoid risks from utilization of clinical research big data,regulations of clinical data usage should be implemented.

Abstract:<p>It has been over 20 years since the introduction of evidence‐based medicine (EBM) into the research of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The development of evidence‐based TCM research has profoundly influenced the process of clinical research and decision‐making, impelling researchers to pay attention to raise evidence quality, accumulate data, and explore appropriate evaluation methods adaptive to TCM original theories and knowledge. In this paper, the authors aim to summarize and review the existing work and seek promising research interests in this field, expecting to inspire more thoughts leading to breakthroughs in the near future.</p>

Abstract:AIM:To explore leadership of Chinese nurse managers in evidence-based nursing implementation.BACKGROUND:Despite much in the literature that highlights the significance of involving nurse managers, the qualitative nature of how their leadership practices influence the evidence implementation has not yet been fully explored.METHODS:A qualitative secondary data analysis was conducted on 15 transcripts of interviews of nurse managers from a parent grounded theory study. The method for analysis employed the directed content analysis approach, using the framework of Kouzes & Posner's Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® model.RESULTS:All the leadership practice categories of Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® were observed in the data. Two additional categories "getting oneself prepared" and "keep it going" were also identified as important leadership practices of nurse managers to exhibit during evidence-based practice implementation.CONCLUSION:This study advances the leadership model by providing validation of existing exemplars and suggests two new practices with exemplars for a better understanding of the nurse managers' role during evidence implementation.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT:Strategies are proposed to recognise, value and prepare nurse managers' leadership practices during evidence implementation. Emphasis should also be put on cultivating and developing individual nurses' professional practice to sustain evidence-based practice.

Abstract:Abstract Background Evidence, in multiple forms, is a foundation of implementation science. For public health and clinical practice, evidence includes the following: type 1 evidence on etiology and burden; type 2 evidence on effectiveness of interventions; and type 3: evidence on dissemination and implementation (D&I) within context. To support a vision for development and use of evidence in D&I science that is more comprehensive and equitable (particularly for type 3 evidence), this article aims to clarify concepts of evidence, summarize ongoing debates about evidence, and provide a set of recommendations and tools/resources for addressing the “how-to” in filling evidence gaps most critical to advancing implementation science. Main text Because current conceptualizations of evidence have been relatively narrow and insufficiently characterized in our opinion, we identify and discuss challenges and debates about the uses, usefulness, and gaps in evidence for implementation science. A set of questions is proposed to assist in determining when evidence is sufficient for dissemination and implementation. Intersecting gaps include the need to (1) reconsider how the evidence base is determined, (2) improve understanding of contextual effects on implementation, (3) sharpen the focus on health equity in how we approach and build the evidence-base, (4) conduct more policy implementation research and evaluation, and (5) learn from audience and stakeholder perspectives. We offer 15 recommendations to assist in filling these gaps and describe a set of tools for enhancing the evidence most needed in implementation science. Conclusions To address our recommendations, we see capacity as a necessary ingredient to shift the field’s approach to evidence. Capacity includes the “push” for implementation science where researchers are trained to develop and evaluate evidence which should be useful and feasible for implementers and reflect community or stakeholder priorities. Equally important, there has been inadequate training and too little emphasis on the “pull” for implementation science (e.g., training implementers, practice-based research). We suggest that funders and reviewers of research should adopt and support a more robust definition of evidence. By critically examining the evolving nature of evidence, implementation science can better fulfill its vision of facilitating widespread and equitable adoption, delivery, and sustainment of scientific advances.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how “lean” is viewed in academic literature and how it is operationalised. The paper also examines how evidence of lean is accounted for in practice. Design/methodology/approach This paper discusses a review of 105 international peer‐reviewed journals with the purpose of identifying what has been written about lean. All in all, 154 articles featuring lean in the article title are identified and reviewed. Findings Lean has moved from application only in production to being used in other sectors, such as the public and service sectors. Most contributions are still found in production and supply chain journals, however, and few contributions discuss the basis of lean or provide a clear definition of the meaning of lean. The literature review indicates that there is a low level of operationalisation of the concept of lean, making the concept seem unclear and vague. About one‐third of the reviewed articles apply a toolbox view on lean; and, in general, the positive effect of lean is documented in only a few of the articles reviewed. Research limitations/implications Only those articles published in international, peer‐reviewed journals are examined. Discussion of lean, however, might be found in other sources, such as textbooks, conference proceedings and PhD dissertations. Practical implications Due to the indistinct definitions of lean that were discovered, one should use the concept of lean with care. It is especially important to specify the conditions and to describe the intentions of usage. Originality/value This paper is the first comprehensive literature review with regard to lean and evidence in relationship to definitions of and assumptions about lean.

Abstract:One can argue that one of the main roles of the subject of statistics is to characterize what the evidence in collected data says about questions of scientific interest. There are two broad questions that we will refer to as the estimation question and the hypothesis assessment question. For estimation, the evidence in the data should determine a particular value of an object of interest together with a measure of the accuracy of the estimate, while for hypothesis assessment, the evidence in the data should provide evidence in favor of or against some hypothesized value of the object of interest together with a measure of the strength of the evidence. This will be referred to as the evidential approach to statistical reasoning which can be contrasted with the behavioristic or decision-theoretic approach where the notion of loss is introduced and the goal is to minimize expected losses. While the two approaches often lead to similar outcomes, this is not always the case and it is commonly argued that the evidential approach is more suited to scientific applications. This paper traces the history of the evidential approach and summarizes current developments.

Abstract:Evidence-based medicine (EBM) requires integration of available ‘best’ clinical evidence,clinician's judgment as well as patient's wishes and expectations.In this paper,we addressed the EBM framework for clinical decision making clinical practice in cardiovascular diseases.Evidence evaluated and interpreted are crucial tools for EBM.EBM has had a profound impact on the treatment of cardiovascular diseases,and confirmed the efficacy of certain controversial interventions.On the other hand,certain widely used conventional strategies for cardiovascular diseases had been proved to be ineffective.Yet,the scientific evidence from China is under resourced to impact the ability to achieve effective actions.We suggest to carry out more high-quality randomized clinical trials to support effective EBM clinical practice.
