Abstract:Objective To compare microwave and radiofrequency ablation in liver tissue. Methods Microwave and radiofrequency energy was applied for 600 seconds at 60 Watts in four porcine livers after laparotomy.Thermosensors were placed at 5,10,15,and 20 mm from the electrodes, and temperatures were recorded using an advanced temperature monitor system. The volume, diameter, shape and temperature in the ablation zone and the pathologic appearance of the ablation zone were compared between microwave and radiofrequency. Results Mean longitudinal diameters of lesions ablated with microwave and radiofrequency were 4.5±0.03 and 3.5±0.15 cm,respectively, and the transverse diameters were 3.0±0.15 and 3.0±0.35 cm,respectively.Significant differences of the longitudinal diameter were found between microwave and radiofrequency ablation (P<0.05).Radiofrequency induced more spherical lesions than microwave did.Microwave induced lesions that had higher central temperature than radiofrequency did(P<0.05).For temperature at the periphery of the ablation zone,no significant difference was demonstrated between the two.But lesions induced by radiofrequency had slightly wider hemorrhagic border than the lesions induced by microwave.Microscopy revealed no obvious histological differences between lesions in the two groups. Conclusions Lesions induced by radiofrequency and microwave had some differences in shape, central temperature, and volume,Understanding these differences will help us better use these two ablation technique.
