Abstract:This paper describes the design of a calorimeter that is suitable for measuring power losses in electrical motors of up to 300 kW (402 hp). Refined from the two previous generations, this calorimeter is of air-cooled open type. Accurate control of the air flow rate and temperature gradients between the inside and outside walls of the calorimeter ensures that a repeatable and durable measurement environment is achieved. During the design stage, attention is focused on heat leakage prevention and reduction in the length of the testing procedures. Heat leakage is mitigated by appropriate insulation and active temperature control over all walls and connection ports. In selecting the materials for the structure, lightweight aluminum and polystyrene are used in sandwich form to reduce the thermal time constant and, thus, the operational time for the calorimeter to reach its equilibrium. After the calorimeter is commissioned, further reduction in the lengthy test procedures is realized by boosting the initial power loss value of the motor under test. That is, some additional resistive heaters are installed inside the calorimeter and operate in conjunction with the test motor. This push-pull technique can guarantee a constant combined power loss during operation, which is assumed to be the final value of motor loss. By predefining a suitable motor loss and a tolerance, it is possible to dynamically control the input power to the dc heaters from the start and to shut down the heaters once the motor loss value enters the tolerance selected. Calibration results confirm the effectiveness and accuracy of the calorimeter.
A Loss Measurement Approach of Power Magnetic Components under Practical Power Electronics Conditions

Abstract:With the increasing operating frequency, magnetic components and their design is considered as a significant part to achieve high power density and high efficiency in today's power electronics converters. Accurate losses of these components under practical excitation conditions are still difficult to determine. Therefore, it's crucial to directly measure the loss of these components for loss estimation and further optimization. In this paper, a loss measurement approach of magnetic power components is proposed. To emulate many power electronics relevant waveforms, the excitation source is constructed in a full-bridge topology with SiC MOSFET modules. To improve measuring accuracy, the selection of current probes is discussed then. Moreover, a time delay correction method ensuring precise compensation is implemented in this paper. Finally, to verify the measurement results, an additional dual-inductor experiment is proposed.
Loss Analysis of Magnet Eddy Current in a High-Power Density Machine Using a Field-Circuit Coupled Model

Abstract:Magnetic eddy current losses is significant in permanent magnet motors, especially in high-power density permanent magnet motors. It significantly affects the magnet’s temperature and properties and may cause irreversible demagnetization. Several methods for reducing magnetic eddy current losses is proposed to address these problems. First, a field-circuit coupled mathematical model was established to calculate the magnetic eddy current losses. Experiments on the phase current and magnetic eddy current losses verify the accuracy of field-circuit coupled mathematical model. Then based on the model, the effect of the trigger angle, slot opening width, pole arc coefficient, pole arc center offset, and auxiliary slots on the magnetic eddy current losses were assessed. The results showed that the magnetic eddy current loss could be reduced by choosing a suitable leading trigger angle, pole arc coefficient, and pole arc center offset. A smaller slot opening width reduced the eddy current losses. A novel auxiliary slot with an optimized size is proposed to reduce eddy current losses. Finally, taking the trigger angle, slot opening width, pole arc coefficient, pole arc center offset and the auxiliary groove as the optimization factors and the magnetic eddy current loss as the optimization target, the optimal parameter scheme is obtained by Taguchi method. The simulation results show that the optimized magnetic eddy current losses is reduced by 8.57%.

Abstract:Evaluating the power loss in power semiconductors is an important step in the process of research, development and design of a power electronics circuit topology. This paper presents a way of doing this via computer simulation. It is based on relatively simple component models and a fast simulation tool, but can quite precisely estimate the loss in power semiconductors, including conduction loss, switching loss and loss caused by diode reverse recovery. Several different continuous-conduction-mode (CCM) single-phase power factor correction (PFC) topologies are studied with this simulation approach. The losses in the semiconductors and subsequently the efficiency of different topologies are evaluated and extensively compared. The simulation results reveal quantitative insight of the power losses in different topologies and also verify that this simulation approach is faster and more cost-effective than numerical calculation or experimental measurement approach.
Assessment of Iec 60034-2-1 in Determining Induction Machine Efficiency

Abstract:This paper evaluates the efficiency of induction machines and measurement uncertainties arising from applying two editions of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) testing standard in industry. Machine testing standards vary in methodology, procedure and required instrumentation accuracy, therefore leading to significant discrepancies in the experimentally determined efficiency for the same induction machine tested to different standards as well as by different testing personnel. Five new induction machines with ratings between 7.5 and 150 kW are carefully tested using IEC 60034-2 (old edition), 60034-2-1 (new edition) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard 112 method B which is used as a benchmark. Furthermore, a 30 kW calorimeter is employed to validate power loss measurements and a realistic uncertainty estimation (RUE) is adopted to assess associated measurement uncertainties in power losses and efficiency, and then to assess the standard methods. Experimental results and uncertainty analysis confirm that IEC 60034-2-1 standard has improved over its previous version in defining a set of higher instrumentation accuracy, a more detailed testing procedure and more accurate models for core loss and particularly stray load loss (SLL). Overall, calorimetric methods justify the effectiveness of IEC 60034-2-1 in terms of providing reliable power losses and efficiency. Finally the need for a unified international induction machine testing standard is highlighted. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
A Generic Power Loss Calculation Method for Fast Converter Performance Scanning

Abstract:This paper proposes a power loss calculation method that can rapidly evaluate converter performance under various system specifications. A graph-based path search algorithm is proposed to identify all current paths within the given converter. Next, a universal program based on current path modeling is developed, which is used to estimate the loss of switching devices under a given converter output current. Furthermore, the steady-state operating waveforms of the converter are obtained using frequency domain analysis, thereby reducing the calculation time. Finally, this method is verified with simulation based on active neutral-point clamped (ANPC) converters. The comparison result indicates that the relative error between the calculated and simulated power losses remains below ±2.5% in the current range of 60A to 150A, while achieving a speed improvement of more than 50 times.

Abstract:Soft magnetic materials play a key role in developing integrated and miniaturized power electronics. However, it is still challenging to accurately evaluate the high-frequency (MHz) power loss of soft magnetic materials, which determines the energy efficiency of power electronics. In this paper, we firstly trace the high-frequency error origination in traditional electrometric method and propose a two-step calibration method for the system to compensate the phase angle discrepancy between exciting current and induced voltage. The first-step calibration eliminates the phase angle discrepancies caused by propagation delay of current and voltage probes, while the second-step calibration compensates residual phase angle discrepancies. A calibration factor k is defined to determine whether the second-step calibration is needed. The experimental results demonstrate that the system's phase discrepancy is compensated within 0.13°, enabling power loss measurement frequency up to 20 MHz that much higher than present apparatus. Our results will facilitate the development of high-frequency soft magnetic materials and promote the miniaturization of power electronics.

Abstract:Power loss monitoring is an important approach to ensure the reliable operation of semiconductors and equipment. Accuracy and timeliness of evaluation cannot be fully balanced by conventional methods. This paper addresses the above challenges and presents a new power loss observation method based on augmented Kalman filter (AKF). Based on the measurement of temperature at the edge of the power module, it can realize accurate estimation of power loss in real time. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by the experiments.

Abstract:The laboratory method used for coal calorific value measurement has a significant hysteresis. In this paper, an on-site measurement method of coal calorific value based on high power laser rapid ignition is proposed. The effects of oxygen transverse passage velocity, thermal insulation crucible bracket and coal samples on the measurement time, unburned rate and calorific value measurement error are gradually investigated. The experimental results shows that the measurement error of calorific value is within 2% and unburned rate is within 2% at the oxygen transverse passage velocity of 120 mm/s of Huainan bituminous coal. Then the utilization of porous thermal insulation crucible bracket has shown a good performance in heat dissipation to shorten the measurement time without increasing the unburned rate. Then, the effects of coal sample thicknesses, species and particle sizes on calorific value measurement are investigated. Results show that under the coal thickness from 4.2 to 5.4 mm, the calorific value measurement error is within 3%, and the unburned rate is within 2% of Huainan antiminous coal. Finally, the results shows that the method has a good performance on different coal species and particle sizes which the calorific value measurement error is within 5%. This research quantifies the effects of the experimental condition parameters on the measurement of coal calorific value based on laser ignition, which lays the foundation for the subsequent development of online coal calorific value meter.

Abstract:Power loss measurement and evaluation form the foundation of loss modeling and optimization. This paper proposes a method for evaluating power loss in high-frequency (HF) transformers operating under forced air-cooling conditions, simply based on surface temperature measurement with a thermal camera. A direct correlation is established between power loss and surface temperature, utilizing a simplified thermal network. This method enables the measurement of both total loss and individual core loss and winding loss directly for HF transformers operating within the whole range of normal working conditions. Simulations are conducted to validate the practicality and accuracy of the proposed method. Experiments are carried out on a HF transformer prototype, following the proposed loss evaluation process, validating the accuracy of the evaluated power loss within wide operation range in loaded tests.

Abstract:To effectively minimize magnetic losses and increase the efficiency of machines, particularly transformers, exact separation of total losses in the magnetic cores of electrical appliances into hysteresis and eddy current is required. To address this issue, the author proposes three variants of the wattmeter method, based on different dependences of eddy current and hysteresis losses on the magnetization reversal frequency, magnetic flux, and temperature, referring to the methods of two frequencies, two densities, and two temperatures. Two experiments were performed for each of the three methods under different conditions. In no-load experiments at two frequencies, at two magnetic flux densities, and two temperatures of the magnetic core, the active powers spent on heating the core were measured, and expressions for the powers of hysteresis and eddy current losses were obtained. The experimental results obtained using different methods are consistent with each other. The advantages and difficulties of each method are analyzed. The combination of methods determines the degree of density index for the magnetic flux in the hysteresis loss power expression (Steinmetz factor) in a particular transformer.

Abstract:Energy consumption constraints on computing systems are more important than ever. Maintenance costs for high performance systems are limiting the applicability of processing devices with large dissipation power. New solutions are needed to increase both the computation capability and the power efficiency. Moreover, energy efficient applications should balance performance vs. consumption. Therefore power data of components are important. This work presents the most remarkable alternatives to measure the power consumption of different types of computing systems, describing the advantages and limitations of available power measurement systems. Finally, a methodology is proposed to select the right power consumption measurement system taking into account precision of the measure, scalability and controllability of the acquisition system.

Abstract:To achieve constant power flow on the DC side of single-phase grid-connected AC-DC converters, a device to compensate the power pulsation of the grid is required. When calculating the power losses of such a compensator device using the measured terminal current and voltage, there is a very significant sensitivity to errors in current measurement, which may render the result implausible. This work proposes a novel filtering method to post-process the acquired measurement signals to continuously eliminate the measurement errors, utilizing properties of the structure of typical compensator circuits and an additional voltage measurement. Two case studies, one involving a a passive and the other an active absorption circuit, demonstrate that this method provides satisfactory measurement results for the power dissipation using standard measurement equipment. Therefore, it is possible to avoid the use of sophisticated instruments or alternative methods, such as for example more laborious calorimetric methods, by employing the proposed approach.

Abstract:Power loss is unavoidable for transformers due to the characteristics of the lossy electrical components and magnetic materials used for manufacturing them. Transformer loss can be roughly categorized into load loss and no-load loss. Fig. 1 illustrates the circuit model of the non-ideal transformer and the losses [1]. It is estimated that there are more than 1.7 million power transformers in China, and the energy loss of these transformers is approximately 250 TWh per year. Such energy loss not only raises the total cost of the utilities but also causes considerable impact to the environment.

Abstract:A new ac calorimeter, utilizing the Peltier effect of a thermocouple junction as an ac power source, is described. This Peltier ac calorimeter allows to measure the absolute value of heat capacity of small solid samples with sub-milligrams of mass. The calorimeter can also be used as a dynamic one with a dynamic range of several decades at low frequencies.

Abstract:The accurate loss and thermal characteristics of power semiconductor devices are crucial not only for efficiency evaluation, but also for the temperature estimation and lifetime prediction of power electronics systems. In traditional way, the loss and thermal characteristics are evaluated by testing schemes/setups that are quite different from practical converters. In order to improve the testing accuracy, this paper presents testing schemes based on an H-bridge circuit, which can realize loss and thermal impedance measurements. In the proposed methods, parasitic effect and thermal coupling are considered, so that devices under test (DUTs) are evaluated in more realistic working conditions. In addition, the proposed testing methods enable tests of multiple DUTs and repeated measurements, in order to extract parameters distribution of a specific device model. The testing principles and some electrothermal behaviors are verified through experimental results.

Abstract:Electro-optical equivalent calibration with high calibration power and high equivalence is particularly well-suited to the calibration of high-energy laser energy meters. A large amount of energy is reserved during this process, however, which continues to radiate after power-off. This study measured the radiation efficiency of a halogen tungsten lamp during power-on and after power-off in order to calculate the total energy irradiated by a lamp until the high-energy laser energy meter reaches thermal equilibrium. A calibration system was designed based on the measurement results, and the calibration equivalence of the system was analyzed in detail. Results show that measurement precision is significantly affected by the absorption factor of the absorption chamber and by heat loss in the energy meter. Calibration precision is successfully improved by enhancing the equivalent power and reducing power-on time. The electro-optical equivalent calibration system, measurement uncertainty of which was evaluated as 2.4% (k = 2), was used to calibrate a graphite-cone-absorption-cavity absolute energy meter, yielding a calibration coefficient of 1.009 and measurement uncertainty of 3.5% (k = 2). A water-absorption-type high-energy laser energy meter with measurement uncertainty of 4.8% (k = 2) was considered the reference standard, and compared to the energy meter calibrated in this study, yielded a correction factor of 0.995 (standard deviation of 1.4%).

Abstract:Dielectric loss factor measurement is an important index in accessing the insulation performance of power equipment.With the development of the condition-based maintenance and smart grid, more attention has been paid to online diagnostic technologies for the dielectric loss factor measurement.Various methods have been developed in this field in which harmonic analysis (HA) is prevalent due to its performance of resisting disturbance and stability superior to others.When performing the HA method on the sampled data, the non-simultaneous sampling and the lack of synchronization between sampling rate and the signal period are believed to be the main source of error in the measurement of the magnitude and the phase of the signals.To improve the effectiveness of the HA method, measures were taken by means of the designing online monitoring system.The basic principle of the HA method is presented in this paper and an online monitoring system based on DSP technology is developed accordingly.At last, this paper analyses the on-line monitoring results resulted from the online monitoring system on a substation.
