Abstract:Evidence of the ongoing nucleosynthesis of Al-26 in our galaxy has been found in presolar grains and in observations of the 1.809-MeV gamma ray, which results from the beta decay of the ground state of Al-26 (Al-26g; t(1/2) = 7.2x10(5) yrs) to an excited state in Mg-26. The nucleosynthesis of Al-26 is complicated by the existence of the isomeric state, Al-26m, at 228 keV (t(1/2) = 6.3 s), which must be treated independently from Al-26g in certain stellar environments, such as ONe novae, where temperatures are below 0.4 GK [1]. Al-26m beta decays directly to Mg-26g, bypassing the emission of the 1.809-MeV gamma ray. The Al-26g(p,gamma)Si-27 and Al-26m(p,gamma)Si-27 reactions destroy Al-26 in novae and have a direct impact on the net amount of Al-26 produced. While the Al-26g (p,gamma)(27)si reaction rate has been studied extensively, there has been virtually no information published on resonances of the Al-26m(p,gamma)Si-27 reaction and previously published reaction rates [2] have been based on Al-26g + p resonances and Hauser-Feshbach calculations. The Al-27(He-3,t)Si-27*(p)Al-26 and Si-28(He-3,alpha)Si-27*(p)Al-26 reactions have been studied at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory at Yale University. Proton decays from the excited states in Si-27 populated via the Al-27(He-3,t)Si-27 and Si-28(He-3,alpha)Si-27 transfer reactions were detected in coincidence with the reaction products of interest, which were detected at the focal plane of the Yale Enge spectrograph. Angular correlations were measured to constrain spins and determine proton branching ratios for Al-26m + p resonances with E-cm > 450 keV and excitation energies of Si-27 were measured. Using this information a Al-26m(p,gamma)Si-27 reaction rate based on experimental information has been calculated for the first time. The extreme differences in proton decays from excited states in Si-27 to Al-26g and Al-26m show that Al-26m(p,gamma)Si-27 reaction rates found using experimental data for Al-26g + p resonances are not valid, and a direct Al-26m(p,gamma)Si-27 measurement must be made to reliably determine the strengths of low-energy resonances, which most likely dominate the reaction rate.
