Abstract:On the basis of separation by cationic exchange, determination of methylamine and dimethylamine at low levels in waters by ion chromatography using methanesulfonic acid as the eluent has been carried out, and the impact of the eluent concentration on resolution has been analyzed as well. The experiment results detected by conductivity detector showed that linear regression covered concentration ranges of 5.0 - 100 mu g/L for methylamine and dimethylamine with typical correlation coefficients r >= 0.9993, when the concentration and flow rate of the eluent were 3 mmol/L and 1.1 mL/min respectively. Under the experiment conditions, the method detection limits for methylamine and dimethylamine were 8.29 ng/L (quantified by peak area) and 0.69 mu g/L (quantified by peak height) and average recoveries over the whole method were 97.2% and 91.6%, with precisions (%) of 3 different concentrations (10.0, 20.0, 100.0 mu g/L) lower than 2.1% as well. Because of the simplicity and low method detection limits, the described ion chromatographic method offers a valuable approach for investigating low-molecular-weight aliphatic amines at low levels in waters.
