Abstract:As a kind of city sculpture, the memorial of war is the carrier of the trauma memory, inheriting the history and culture of the city. However, many of them became normal indicators because of the less attention paid to their historical value and landscape value, which are supposed to be the most basic values of memorials. The Nanjing Massacre Victim’s Memorials are taken as a typical example in this paper. It has been formed the value evaluation system from the perspective of historical and landscape value, and all these memorials are divided into three categories based on their own radar model. In terms of existing problems, this paper gives out improvement suggestions, trying to explore and highlight the value of the war memorials combining different value perspectives, in order to construct unique city landscape.

Abstract:Along about 1 kilometers way of the Purple-Golden Mountain, an ensemble of buildings were built on original Linggu temple site to commemorate the martyrs of national revolutionary army. Based on the Linggu temple’s space, former brick-vault hall and traditional memorial architecture style, most of buildings absorbed western technology such as reinforced concrete, steel structure. all the group of monuments display the art of the space, construction through the form, structure, color, materials, details in order to express the dignified and solemn atmosphere.

Abstract:The urban mortuary space is an essential part of the traditional social space of Beijing, revealing the complex modernization process during the period of the Republic of China (1912-1949). The main mortuary space of Beijing comprised Yidi (a traditional Chinese graveyard), mortuary temples, and modern cemeteries. The Beijing government failed to adapt or renovate the traditional mortuary space during this period. The Yidi and mortuary temples were mainly distributed in the outer city of Beijing; both of them were formed hundreds of years ago and provided for the immigrants, the poor, and beggars. The modern cemeteries injected new elements into the mortuary space, which also strengthened social class divisions and spatial segregation due to the price-driven graveyards and services. The traditional mortuary space quickly disappeared in the 1950s with great improvement in public hygiene. The complex process of Beijing’s mortuary space transformation reflects the modernization of Chinese cities.

Abstract:The continuation of historical space and the transformation of realistic scene as two kinds of important power play an important role in city's development.Many scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of research about historical cultural heritage and modern city space.There is no lack of good insight among them.The author was given a lot of inspiration and a good opportunity for the creation of this paper.Only on the basis of fully understanding the features and interaction from historical space and realistic scene,we could do more reasonable planning and design for the cultural inheritance.This paper,from the perspective of communication,takes Beijing as an example,contrasts the different attributes and analyzes characterization between historical space and realistic scene.It illuminates the dependence and conflict between new scene and old space,through the artistic method of the figure and ground,collage fragment,deconstruction and reconstruction,popularization and classic.
The Secularization and Cultural Understanding of Sacred Space: an Analysis of Historical Urban Form and Culture Characteristics in China

Abstract:Sacred space is a special type of cultural space and is an important aspect of historical urban form in both Eastern and Western cultures. These spaces often have a dual interpretation of space and social structure, which includes the evolution of town planning and the changes in social structure that convey a steadfast and non-reducible cultural significance. There are interesting differences between the East and West, and this paper aims to reveal these differences. The paper uses historical towns within the Five Sacred Mountains of China, represented by Dengfeng City, as a case study. This town is closely linked to the birth and development of Chinese civilization. The paper employs cultural memory theory, sacred space theory, and social space theory to study the transformation from the highest political space of ancient dynasties to the secular urban landscape of socialist system from two dimensions of townscape and social culture. Finally, the paper compares the characteristics of sacred space in the East and West, interprets the relationship between it and urban form and cultural value judgement, summarizes the general role of sacred space in shaping urban form and transmitting local cultural identity.

Abstract:Cultural and entertainment facilities are an important mainstay for urban development and the well-being of urban residents. Studying their spatial distribution is thus of great significance for improving urban functions and shaping urban characteristics. This paper uses the Simpson index, grid method, kernel density, nearest neighbor analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis to present in detail the spatial pattern, hotspot distribution and clustering characteristics of urban cultural and entertainment facilities in Beijing. With the help of the spatial lag model, the main factors affecting the spatial distribution of the facilities are explored. The results are as follows: Different types of cultural and entertainment facilities have different spatial agglomeration effects, which are closely related to the historical background of Beijing, industrial distribution, and the living needs of residents; the facilities generally present a spatial distribution with prominent centrality, strong clustering and significant heterogeneity; and financial insurance institution density, building density, securities company density, housing rent and distance to nearest scenic spot are the main factors affecting the distribution of the facilities. Analyzing the distribution characteristics and influencing factors of urban cultural and entertainment facilities in Beijing will provide typical cases and decision-making references that can underpin the informed layout and planning of urban cultural and entertainment industries and facilities.

Abstract:This article analyzes urban images held by people living inBeijing after a short review of theoretical development in urban image space studies. Two basic methods were used to obtain data, one is cognitive mapping and the other is photo recognition. Five major factors that may influence the designative image are examined one by one. Hence we conclude that the frame constituted by roads, landmarks, nodes and function areas consist of the major public imaginary of Beijing. The Second Ring Road separates the “inner city area” from the “outer city area” and the quality of urban image is quite different in area from one part to the others. Based on the above conclusions and findings, some useful suggestions are made for urban planning and designing of Beijing.

Abstract:Purpose China has been going through a "museum boom" paralleling the domestic tourism boom since 2000; such growth changed the cultural landscape; museums became a vital characteristic of some Chinese cities for both residents and tourists. Encouraged by this growth, the more ambitious "All-for-one Museum (全域博物馆)" was proposed. The physical boundary between museums and living spaces is infinite ambiguity, challenging the idea of museums as "heterotopias." This study aims to explore the musealization of urban spaces in the context of anthropology and museology, scrutinizing the cultural-political intentions and meanings of these developments, and seeks to ignite further investigation into the reconstruction of historical imaginaries for tourists and urban populations across related disciplines. Design/methodology/approach This paper examines two cases in Chinese metropolises, Beijing and Shanghai, to illustrate this development of musealization, that is, how the cities actively leverage museological values and methods to connect with their past. In the Beijing case, the authors explore how the local government is leading the effort to musealize the city; in the Shanghai case, they will see how tourists, especially dweller-tourists, navigate through a curated past story in the city and connect their own experience, memory and identity with the place. Findings The all-for-one museum creates a museal layer projected onto the bigger urban space, even though the authenticity of the "past" is challenged by the modernization development of the city. The authors also find out that for some tourists (especially dweller-tourists), an existential sense of authenticity plays a more significant role as they not only seek to sightsee the past of the city but also to take part in its creation. Originality/value This paper discusses two kinds of musealization in cosmopolitan cities of Beijing and Shanghai: top-down and bottom-up. It approaches questions about the musealization of urban spaces from the perspectives of anthropology and museology, and discusses musealization in the specific historical context of China's modernization process.
