Abstract:New and old sanitation systems coexist in Beijing. The densely populated old districts of the city abound with traditional courtyard houses known as siheyuan, most of which do not have toilets and who's residents generally use public toilets instead. Surveys conducted in the target areas of Dongsi and Xianyukou revealed there to be two types of public toilet in use; an old type built in the 1960's and a newer type built after 1990. This system suits these densely populated areas and also makes for easier waste removal by cleaning workers; in addition to ensuring better living conditions for the residents. The results show that the public toilets improve the indoor environment of the siheyuan and also contribute to preserving the condition of the historical milieu. This efficient public toilet system also supplies jobs for migrant workers who act as custodians; the newer type of public toilet system also allows the Beijing government to display a modern sanitation system. Thus the public toilet system in these densely populated areas can be seen to be beneficially effective for residents, migrant workers, and the Beijing government. The conclusions drawn in this study can serve as an important foundation for future discussions on the urban environment of traditional places from the viewpoint of infrastructure, especially in Beijing, as these areas are currently undergoing regeneration.

Abstract:Underground public space is an important public space in a city. Over the last decade, the high density areas lead to serious urban problems, and the urban landscape requirements bring needs of underground spaces, thus, the underground public spaces in Beijing have great development. The distribution of Beijing underground public spaces tends to be a spatial layout of double-axis and double-loop, and the functions are diverse such as Integrated, cultural, sports and leisure. This paper discusses the spatial distribution of Beijing underground public spaces, studies the spaces with different functions, and also looks forward to the possibility of underground Beijing City in the future.

Indoor Air Quality Improvement in Public Toilets at Railway Stations in China: A Field and Numerical Study

Abstract:This study investigated the air quality and ventilation systems of 22 public toilets in 10 railway stations in China. Approximately 80% of public toilets meet the standard for ammonia concentration in Class I toilets, while 20% exceed the standard. It was found that the concentration of pollutants is mainly related to the number of toilet users and the ventilation system. In 20% of public toilets, the change in ammonia concentration was delayed by about 1 to 2 h with the change in hourly service number. In order to improve the air quality, a design method for calculating the number of toilet cubicles was proposed. Results show that the service capacity of the cubicle per hour (SCCH) of a female toilet is 12, the SCCH of male toilets is related to the ratio of squatting pans to urinals (RSU), which is suggested to be 1:1~1:0.8, and the corresponding SCCH is 16~20. Then, the effect of different ventilation forms was simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) 2019 software. The results show that the bottom exhaust was better than the top exhaust and that the fresh air supply system is unnecessary. The recommended ventilation rate for toilets is 20 air changes per hour (ACH). The scale design method of toilets proposed in this paper was meant to address the gender imbalance and avoid queuing and provides a reference for the renovation and design of public toilets.

Abstract:The provision of sanitation services for fast-growing urban populations is one of the world?s urgent challenges. Hutong neighborhoods in Beijing, capital of China, cannot be rebuilt due to the protection of historical heritage, while residents still need to keep the habit of defecating in public toilets. One hundred public toilets with nonsewered sanitation in the Hutong neighborhoods of Beijing were visited to investigate the actual operating status in response to the ?toilet revolution? campaign. The fault tree approach was used to identify the barriers toward a decent and environment-friendly public toilet and evaluate potential risks from the malfunction of various components. Four subsystems are defined and elaborated to calculate the fault possibility. These subsystems are environment- and user-friendly, regarded as ancillary facilities, and used for fecal sludge (FS) management. Statistical analysis of targeted cases indicated that fault probabilities of environmental considerations, userfriendly considerations, ancillary facilities, FS management are calculated as 0.79, 0.96, 0.96, and 0, respectively. The subsystems were weighted using a Delphi method concept. Results showed that the well operation ratio of Beijing Hutong public toilets is only 32%, and the sanitation service value chain can be further optimized. This study also provides references for other countries, which are dedicated to promoting urban sanitation and public health.

An Empirical Research on Importance and Performance of Tourism Toilets Satisfaction in Famous Scenic Spots: A case study of four 5A-Class tourist attractions of shandong province

Abstract:The tourism toilet has long been the weakest part in China's tourism industry.The issue is not only closely related to tourists' self-interests,but also the local areas' longterm development.With the sample of 575 tourists of four 5A level scenic spots such as Baotu Spring,the paper sets up 30 evaluation indices of tourism toilet by using the importanceperformance analysis (IPA) method to analyze tourists.The result reveals that:First,tourists response the highest perceived importance on these evaluation indices like "being easy to find","being free to go in" and "being willing to stay".The evaluation indices of the interior of the tourism toilet,appearance and so on are the most unimportant aspects.Second,tourists react the highest perceived performance on signs,free-payment and opening time,while getting the lowest satisfaction in humanized auxiliary service and modern complementary facilities.Third,the indices of toilet surroundings and services for the disabled have great importance but poor performance in actual situation,which would henceforth be the core to reform the tourism toilet.Based on the perspective of tourist demands,the results provide theoretical basis and practical guidance,and thus give an impetus to the development of the tourism toilet revolution advancing in China currently.

Abstract:Abstract Reasonable location and layout of public toilets can ensure the use efficiency of toilets in the park, and improve the use experience of tourists and satisfaction with the park. (1) Based on the background of “tourism toilet revolution”, this paper summarizes the existing methods to solve the problem of facility location, and analyzes the possibility of facility location in urban park. (2) This paper summarizes the single constraint conditions of the existing facilities location, less considering the flow of people and other issues, proposes and establishes a multi-level, multi constraint condition location model. (3) The optimization model proposed in this paper is applied to the location and layout of public toilets in Xuanwu Lake Park, Nanjing. (4) The location model proposed in this paper can meet a variety of constraints at the same time, and provide a more convenient, scientific and economic location method for urban park public toilets and other infrastructure services, landscape buildings, and provide reference for other types of urban park landscape building facilities location.
Investigation Research on the Barrier-Free Facilities in Landscape Architecture——A Case Study of Beijing

Abstract:In order to make the parks become the real civil parks that can meet the demands of various visitors, to promote the building of a barrier-free environment, nine first class main factors and 60 secondary class main factors were built up as the barrier-free environment factor system. Meanwhile, the importance and satisfaction of five different types of parks were surveyed in this paper. The results show that the barrier-free toilets, exits and entrances are the first important factors, and the rest facilities are the most satisfying element among the first class main factors. The antiskid processing is most important, and the barrier-free toilet is most satisfying in the secondary factors. The status quo in the construction of Beijing landscape architecture was summed up, and the direction of development and problems that may be faced in the future construction is discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Under the upsurge of beautiful rural construction and “toilet revolution”, the public toilets in rural areas have made remarkable achievements in environmental health, but it is still poor in micro space quality and aesthetic sense, and homogenization causes serious local deficiencies. Therefore, this paper selects Daoming bamboo art village in Chongzhou city and Chuanxi Music Linpan in Dujiangyan city of China as the research areas. Starting from the micro space of public toilet in Linpan integrating industry and tourism, On the basis of defining the concept of the micro space, this paper uses Likert scale method to acquire the local evaluation of local villagers, tourists and business operators on the micro space, and applies factor analysis method to verify the evaluation five-dimension of the micro space, including humanistic care, cultural heritage, landscape optimization, spatial design and functional innovation. The results show that the respondents have a high recognition of the local landscape of the micro space, but it is believed that there are still deficiencies in terms of humanistic care, functional innovation, spatial design and cultural heritage. It aims at providing a reference for the local evaluation and creation of the micro space of Linpan, so as to help the protection of Linpan in Western Sichuan.

Abstract:Environment and Planning A: Economy and Space, Ahead of Print. This research attends to how urban tenants bring matong (toilets in the form of urine buckets)—which are a material, semiotic, and marketable piece of infrastructure—into the debates over the remaking of a heritage district in Hongkou, Shanghai. Challenges abound for the site, which is occupied by prewar buildings where Jewish refugees found shelter during the war and more than 10 thousand Chinese tenants moved in after the Jews left. Until 2020, the dilapidated buildings accommodated an aging population of tenants who wish to stay relevant to the redevelopment vision of Shanghai and a variety of community business, including urban waste recycling. To find a crack in the state-led, neoliberal system, the tenants managed to exercise infrapolitics—an everyday form of resistance—over an urban infrastructure that is of particular significance to their bio-well-being and beyond. We analyze a set of spatial politics on sanatory infrastructure in Hongkou to understand how the tenants are desperately capitalizing on their disadvantages and reassembling memories, waste, and housing inequality into something more promising from below. The theorization of infra-bio-urbanism upon toilets sheds light on the accumulating anxiety upon housing inequality and infrastructural mobility in globalizing cities in China and beyond.
