The Types,Progressions,and Characteristics of Political Transition in Central and Eastern Europe

Abstract:In the past 20 years,Central and Eastern Europe have developed two models of political transition.One model is the Smooth-Evolution Type in countries such as Poland.In these countries,the process of democratization has been relatively peaceful,the democratic system is stable,and the whole political system is similar to that of the Western countries.The other model is the Conflict-Split Type,manifested in all former Yugoslavic countries except Slovenia.In these countries,political development is immensely affected by ethnic nationalism.Democratization in these countries has led to secession and ethnic conflict. The overall goal of political transition in Central and Eastern Europe is to establish a Western democratic system.Democratization is not the end of Central and Eastern European history.The diverse conditions of Central and Eastern European countries provide possibilities for developing new models of democracy.
