Abstract:Numerical studies are conducted to investigate the aerodynamic performance and flow patterns of a tapered swept wing with wavy leading edges (WLE). The WLEs are in the form of sinusoidal profiles with a constant wavelength of 30 mm and an amplitude of 20% of the local chord. The Reynolds number based on the mean geometric chord is 280 000 and the angle of attack varies from 0° to 20°. For small angles of attack with steady flow, steady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations are performed using the SST (Shear Stress Transportation) k–ω turbulence model. For large angles of attack with unsteady flow, unsteady simulations are conducted using the SST–SAS (Scale-Adaptive Simulation, SAS) model. The numerical results show that, in the pre-stall regime of the baseline wing, the lift is decreased while the drag is increased by the WLEs. The lift is reduced by up to 10.97% at the stall angle of the baseline wing of 16°, while the drag is increased by up to 82.54% at an angle of attack of 15°. The lift-to-drag ratio is reduced by up to 49.95% at an angle of attack of 15°. The baseline wing obtains its maximum lift-to-drag ratio of 14.22 at an attack angle of 6°, while the wavy wing achieves its maximum value of 13.36 at the same attack angle. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio is reduced by 6.05%. In the post-stall region of the baseline wing, the lift is increased while the drag is also increased by the WLEs. The lift, drag and lift-to-drag ratio are increased by up to 46.5%, 24.33% and 17.83% respectively at an angle of attack of 18°. Furthermore, the lift of the wavy wing increases gradually with the angle of attack with no apparent stall process. The wall pressure distributions, wall streamline distributions and flow patterns responsible for the change of the aerodynamic performance are analysed in detail.
