Abstract:The measurement of crew work load is an important part in the evaluation of the airworthiness of human factors. In clause 25.1523 of air worthiness' regulation on minimum flight crew, it is explicitly required that crew work load be put into consideration. The applicant must demonstrate in a rational manner the appropriate level of the crew that is to be given certification in order to ensure the safety of the aircraft.The evaluation of crew workload is to be done in an objective way so as to offset the uncertainty of subjective evaluations. The research of this paper constructs an integrated simulator experiment platform to collect and analyze the physiological data of pilots during the experiment, to achieve a quantitative measurement of crew work load. The integrated experiment platform mainly comprises of two parts: firstly, a flight simulation system that can simulate various flight task scenarios; the other is a pilot physiological data collection and analysis system, where objective measurement of the flight crew is achieved by recording and analyzing the relationship between physiological and flight data of the tested pilots. In this research, experiments of approaching and landing are done and through data recording and analysis, the feasibility of the integrated experiment platform is tested.

Abstract:Human factors has been playing more and more predominant role in aviation. Pilot workload evaluation is one of the most important fields in human factors to make thorough research. Among the various workload measure techniques, it is generally recognized that workload evaluation measurement is hard to elaborate. In this paper, the definition of workload is based on time pressure and effort. The relationship between time pressure and effort is the main focus to help the selection of workload evaluation approach. The models of workload evaluation are respectively set up in time pressure and effort. Heart rate, respiration rate, respiration depth, eye tracker data and control data were obtained in the flight experiment called double hydraulic failure. By comparison with the result of workload evaluation in time pressure and effort, it can indicate that the workload evaluation should take time pressure and effort altogether into account under double hydraulic failure condition. Eventually, the analysis on the relationship between time pressure and effort enables to proceed the research of workload evaluation.
A Study on Visual Workload Components: Effects of Component Combination and Scenario Complexity on Mental Workload in Maritime Operation Tasks.

Abstract:Mental workload is a key factor in influencing human performance of maritime tasks among which visual tasks dominate. Through a lab experiment, this study examined the effects of visual workload components, their combinations and scenario complexity on mental workload. 20 participants were recruited to perform visual tasks on a simulated platform. Results showed that some combinations of visual components significantly increased the participants’ mental workload. Scenario complexity was found to have significant interaction effects with workload component combinations. The results indicate that because of their negative effects on task performance, some combinations of workload components should be specially avoided in task design.

Abstract:Crew workload assessment is an important index of airworthiness certification.Wokload assessment is required by both CFR-25.1523 of federal aviation administration（FAA） airworthiness certification and CCAR-25.1523 of Chinese airworthiness certification.The basic frame of evaluation index system was established by studying airworthiness certification,crew operation manual of Boeing 737 and Airbus 320,other correlated references and interviewing with pilots.The crew workload comprehensive evaluation index system was established by consultation with Delphi method,and index weight coefficients questionnaire with order relation analysis method.The crew workload of Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 was evaluated with fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method based on the built evaluation index.The result shows that this index is reasonable and practicable.The evaluation index system and evaluation results can provide design reference on crew workload for C919.

Abstract:Flight scenarios for assessment of airworthiness and evaluation of aircraft are imperative for the aircraft industry. A flight scenario developing method which takes both aircraft airworthiness and evaluation into consideration was proposed in this paper. Four aspects of techniques, including configuration of dynamical relations among flight environment, weather conditions and aircraft considerations, decomposition of flight crew tasks, mapping of workload functions and factors onto operational tasks, and specification of window events and data items, were provided and integrated based on methodological guide. The method adopted an automated planning and scheduling mechanism which facilitates recurrence of flight conditions and detection of working status of pilot, so that flight scenarios developed could be utilized in various flight tests for fulfillment of flight tasks, implementation of workload measurement, and establishment of minimum flight crew; hence ergonomic evaluation of pilot-aircraft interaction could be carried out which are useful for assessment of airworthiness, analysis of human factors, human-centered design of aircraft, virtual prototyping and engineering of aircraft.

Abstract:Modern aircraft is a man-machine-cooperate complex system. The issues which affect the aviation safety gradually become human factors. Statistical reports show that more than 70% of the civil aircraft accidents are caused by human because of the misuse, abuse and disuse of the automatic systems. Several studies have been made, trying to reveal the reasons of human induced safety issues. Many of them consider workload as a main reason. Studies show that too high or too low of workload would both have higher probability of human errors. The state of art workload measurement techniques are generally organized into three broad categories: subjective rating scales, task performance measures and psychophysiological measures. There are some disadvantages in the conventional workload measuring techniques. Subjective rating scales couldn’t provide continuous evaluation in the flight task and the results could be affected by participants’ emotion and performance etc. The performance measures overlook the operator’s initiatives and effort. The mechanisms of the physiological reactions are complex, and the physiological measures could be easily contaminated by environmental changes such as illumination, pressure and vibration. We proposed a method to evaluate the human factors in a flight task based on multiple objective measures. In the presented method, the objective measures include the pilot’s eye activities, control activities, cardio-respiratory reactions and the flight status parameters. Principal component analysis was applied to integrate the above objective measures into four meaningful aspects. Meanwhile, in order to link the cockpit components (e.g. the displays and the control equipment) to the pilot and the flight performance, four correlation aspects were also considered which include the correlation between the pilot’s cognitive activity and the pilot’s arousal, the correlation between the pilot’s control activity and the pilot’s arousal, the correlation between the pilot’s cognitive activity and the flight performance and the correlation between the pilot’s control activity and the flight performance. These correlation aspects could provide diagnostic information in the assessment of the design of the cockpit components. We also constructed an eight-dimension pattern to integrate the above eight aspects and achieved an intuitive and continuous evaluation of the inflight human factors in the flight deck.

Abstract:Abstract There is increasing concern about the design and evaluation of the human factors in the flight deck. The study was to propose a comprehensive evaluation method of the human factors in the flight deck, combing with multiple physiological signals. The proposed comprehensive evaluation method in the flight deck are composed with the evaluation of the operators’ cognition, operational performance, control activities and workload. The cardiovascular signal, eye movement and flight parameters were recorded during task to conduct the evaluation. An experiment about the evaluation of the display elements in the flight deck was conducted to verify the proposed comprehensive method of the human factors. The results revealed the validity of the proposed method, which can give a detailed description of the operator’s workload, operational performance and cognition during the flight task.
Workload Functions Distribution Method: A Workload Measurement Based on Pilot's Behaviors

Abstract:According to the airworthiness regulation, FAR25.1523 published by Federal Aviation Administration, the minimum flight crew must be established so that it is sufficient for safe operation considering the workload on individual crew members. Considering workload evaluation, typically, the measurements classified into three types: performance measures, subjective rating scale measures and psychophysiological measures. However, although these measurements are widely used in various fields, they could not reflect the behavior of flight crew during flight tasks comprehensively, especially their workload functions. Normally, the basic workload functions based on the flight crew behaviors consist of six aspects: flight path control, collision avoidance, navigation, communication, operation and monitoring of aircraft engines and systems and command decisions. In this study, upon the above six aspects, a measurement named Workload Function Distribution Method was developed, considering flight crew behaviors including fixations, actions and communications in flight tasks. In order to verify the Workload Function Distribution Method, three flight tasks with different complexity were carried out among 6 flight crews in a CRJ200 flight simulator. The three flight tasks were standard instrument approach, non-precision approach with normal weather condition and non-precision approach with turbulence. Furthermore, one of the subjective rating scale measures, NASA-TLX, was used as a verification method which collected after each task. The experiment results indicated that Workload Function Distribution Method could distinguish the different complexity of flight tasks, and related to the NASA-TLX Scale.In conclude, Workload Function Distribution Method was built up in this study. This measurement could effectively represent the flight crew workload based on their behaviors in flight tasks.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of today’s battlefield environment, the workload level of the pilots greatly affects the smooth execution of flight tasks. When a pilot’s workload is too high, it can cause his ability to sense the surrounding environment to be reduced, and even cause extremely dangerous flight accidents. Based on experiments and statistics, the sensitivity of the pilot’s EEG (electroencephalography) and physiological factors under different flight tasks is analyzed, and a pilot workload evaluation model is established based on the SVM (support vector machines) classifier.
A Sensitivity Analysis Method Of Physiological Signals For Assessing Pilot Workload

Abstract:As the flight missions become complicated, the workload of pilots in flight is increasing gradually, which can cause extremely dangerous flight accidents. Therefore, real-time assessment of the workload of pilots in flight is necessary, but there are many factors involved in the assessment, and the assessment factors need to be selected. In this paper, by designing three kinds of flight missions with different difficulty levels, the pilot's physiological data during the flight experiments and the results of the questionnaires filled out after the experiments are collected. Then statistical hypothesis test is used to analyze whether the data changes significantly with the difficulty. The final results show that the sensitivity of the EMG, heart rate, abdomen expansion, and questionnaire results is significant, and the sensitivity of the SpO2, pulse, and chest expansion data is slightly significant. Finally, a preliminary model for pilot workload real-time assessment is established based on the fuzzy cognitive map and sensitive indicators, laying a foundation for further accurate assessment in the future.

Abstract:Effective evaluation of cabin human-machine interface is key to the design quality of human-machine interface, and good interface design can reduce human error. This paper established a cabin evaluation model based on account of SHEL. The method used an improved fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method to restrict the influence of experimenters' subjective randomness and personal preference on weight coefficient to the maximum extent through expert self-evaluation and subjective judgment process control mechanism. An evaluation experiment of cabin human-machine interface had been conducted to validate the model proposed. The results showed that the model can be used to evaluate the human-machine interface and was more effective compared with the traditional method. The evaluation results of the model can be used to instruct the design of cabin interface.

Abstract:Diverse flight situations will have different influences on the function of a pilot's brain. To study these influences and confirm the sensitivity of related measurements, flight simulation tasks are carried out on an aircraft cockpit ergonomics evaluation experimental base. Subjects are required to monitor the changes of flight information and make corresponding flight operations simultaneously. Different quantities of abnormal information on the head-up display are handled so that pilot mental workload can be divided into four levels. Subjective assessment, behavior performance and physiological measurements are comprehensively applied to evaluate subjects' mental workload. Experiment results indicate that both subjective assessment based on NASA Task Load Index (TLX) and behavior performance can reflect the changes of pilot mental workload, heart rate variability, mean pupil diameter and eyelid opening indices are sensitive to mental workload in terms of physiological measurements. Combining all above measurements, a comprehensive evaluation method can provide a reasonable basis of pilot mental workload assessment and classification under complex flight tasks.

Abstract:At present, the evaluation of the mental workload of pilots has become the focus of the development of the aerospace industry. Aiming at the defects and disadvantages of off-line and subjective mental workload evaluation methods. The goal of this study is to evaluate the mental workload of pilots online. The method is based on a Cognitive Task Load (CTL) model, combined with FlightGear flight simulator and Skill-Rule-Knowledge framework. The real flight mission of the aircraft is simulated, and the mental workload of the pilot at the current moment is estimated in real time by calculating the process of the pilot's mental workload during the period from the taxiing phase to the beginning of the cruise. The results show that the method of evaluating the mental workload of pilots by CTL model is effective and reliable, overcomes the limitations of traditional methods, and has strong maneuverability.

Abstract:Human factors have an important impact on aviation safety. The evaluation of pilot's workload is one of the most noteworthy human factors issues. After a brief overview of workload measurement techniques, a layered multi-dimensional description of workload is proposed, and the method is based on multiple objective measures. Heart rate, respiration, eye movements, control inputs and flight data are recorded in a simulated flight. The sensitivity and diagnosticity of several psychophysiological measurements are analyzed. Finally, a multi-dimensional pattern is constructed using the proposed method. The pattern can give a detailed description of pilot's workload throughout the flight.

Abstract:As the complexity of flight missions continues to increase, sending a timely warning or providing assistance to pilots helps to reduce the probability of operational errors and flight accidents. Monitoring pilots’ physiological data, real-time evaluation of mission load is a feasible technical way to achieve this. In this paper, a set of flight tasks including aircraft control, humancomputer interaction and mental arithmetic tests are designed to simulate five mission loads at different flight difficulty levels. A sensitivity analysis method based on a comprehensive test is proposed to select a set of sensitive physiological factors. Then, based on the SVM hierarchical combination classification method, the pilot mission load real-time evaluation model is established.The test results show significant differences in EMG, respiration rate(abdomen), heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, pupil area, fixation duration, number of fixations, and saccades. The high accuracy obtained from experiments proved that the proposed real-time evaluation model is applicable to meet the requirements of real working environments. The findings can provide methodological references for mission load evaluation research in other fields.

Abstract:The research of the wheelhouse ergonomic design for large ships is of great significance to minimizing wheelhouse human errors and guaranteeing the safety of ship navigation. To obtain a better human-machine engineering implementation effect and a faster feedback during the wheelhouse designing, the paper proposed a virtual simulation and evaluation method. First, based on anthropometry and relevant theoretical knowledge of human dynamics, the virtual crew database was built via 3dsMax, and task actions such as crew walking, operating buttons, and observation were defined. Second, the design requirements of ship wheelhouse human-machine engineering were summarized from an overall perspective. Subsequently, a virtual simulation of the working environment was implemented, while the layout and design of the wheelhouse structure were analyzed. Besides, the evaluation index system was constructed in an analytic hierarchy process. Finally, a digital integrated evaluation system was established to evaluate the man-machine interface design for the wheelhouse, including three-dimensional digitalization model, real-time virtual simulation and human-computer interaction design, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed evaluation method. According to the corresponding profound evaluation result analysis, the suggestions for improvement were put forward.

Abstract:As one of the new human-computer interaction devices in advanced cockpit, the design and application of HWDs (Head-Worn Display System) must ensure that pilots can complete flight tasks comfortably, efficiently and safely with acceptable workload. However, to our knowledge, the thorough evaluation methods of HWDs have not been found. Therefore, an integrated ergonomics evaluation method of HWDs was established in this paper. Firstly, the main factors affecting ergonomics in HWDs had been analyzed to establish a preliminary index system by combining the working principle of the system with the related criterions in GJB. And then a final integrated ergonomics evaluation index system of HWDs was established based on modified Delphi method. Gl method was used to determine the weight vector of each index, which provides a good foundation for further evaluation of the HWDs’ design.

Abstract:Based on the virtual site of a 3-D digital workshop, a solution scheme of a certain digital factory and the simulation result of the workshop product line, with the support of the ergonomic studies, this paper analyzed the factors that may influence the system ergonomics of the digital workshop from the perspective of work efficiency under human-machine environment. Human, machine and environment of a digital workshop and the interrelationship among them was studied from some aspects including simulation of workshop layout, ergonomics, workshop environment and culture as well as the efficiency of digital workshop. The paper also proposed some basic thoughts and references for workshop environment design based on the studies of workshop material flow and production rules.

Abstract:Virtual human techniques have been used a lot in industrial design in order to consider human factors and ergonomics as early as possible. The physical status (the physical capacity of virtual human) has been mostly treated as invariable in the current available human simulation tools, while indeed the physical capacity varies along time in an operation and the change of the physical capacity depends on the history of the work as well. Virtual Human Status is proposed in this paper in order to assess the difficulty of manual handling operations, especially from the physical perspective. The decrease of the physical capacity before and after an operation is used as an index to indicate the work difficulty. The reduction of physical strength is simulated in a theoretical approach on the basis of a fatigue model in which fatigue resistances of different muscle groups were regressed from 24 existing maximum endurance time (MET) models. A framework based on digital human modeling technique is established to realize the comparison of physical status. An assembly case in airplane assembly is simulated and analyzed under the framework. The endurance time and the decrease of the joint moment strengths are simulated. The experimental result in simulated operations under laboratory conditions confirms the feasibility of the theoretical approach.

Abstract:It establishes human thermal-comfort model, realizes the combination of human thermal-comfort model and cockpit environment through RadTherm plat. Obtaining the flow field of cockpit through numerical calculation and the velocity filed and the temperature filed are provided for human thermal-comfort model as import conditions. The numerical calculation results of cockpit environment and human thermal-comfort evaluation validate and integrate together to evalu-ate cockpit environment. Research proves that the cockpit environment evaluation through numerical calculation and the pilot thermal-comfort evaluation through human thermal-comfort model are correct, valid and have a higher engineering application value.
