Investigation and Analysis on Drug-Purchasing Preference in Pharmacy and Drug Use of Elderly Hypertension Patients

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To provide reference to the correct pharmacy service for the elderly hypertension patients in the next step.METHODS:By questionnaire survey,100 elderly hypertension patients who purchased drugs and received blood pressure measurement were randomly collected from Xi'an from April to June,2009.RESULTS:99 questionnaires were recovered.The awareness rates of elderly hypertension patients and treatment of 2 weeks were satisfactory.The main factors that influenced drug-purchasing preference included physician prescription,experience of drug use and pharmacists' suggestion.Most of patients took drugs in accordance to medical order,and they paid high attention to hypertension.The respondents often adjusted drugs by themselves,and their risk consciousness was weak.Only a small number of patients got help from pharmacists,reflecting community pharmaceutical care is under-developed.The higher in education,the more careful in adjustment of drugs;the longer the illness,the more likely to practice self-medication;and the impact of prices on drug purchase was great.CONCLUSIONS:Blood pressure control in elderly hypertensive patients buying drugs through a retail pharmacy in Xi'an is satisfactory,but self-medication in hypertension patients is associated with a high risk,and community pharmaceutical care needs to be strengthened.
