Abstract:The laser direct metal rapid prototyping technology is not only the integration of rapid forming basic principles and laser processing technology, but also the inevitable trend of research and development of rapid shaping field. This paper introduces 5 kinds of foreign and 3 kinds of domestic latest research of laser direct metal rapid shaping technology systematically, and analyses the characteristics of these types of laser direct metal rapid shaping technology, and points out the existing problems and the future major research directions of the laser direct metal rapid shaping technology. Research shows that the direct laser cladding metal parts with rapid prototyping technology have unmatched advantage over conventional manufacturing methods. In the aerospace, energy and power engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, instrumentation, military weapons, equipment, and medical fields,the technology has the broad application prospects.

Abstract:Rapid prototyping full compacted metal parts has becoming the focus of attention in the domain of rapid prototyping. In this paper, the method of forming full compacted metal parts by selective laser melting has been put out and the experimental researches on it have been carried out. The surface quality and the inner microstructure of the parts formed by selective laser melting were analyzed. The full compacted metal parts without any micro-cracks have been attained. The test results show that the tensile strengthen of 316L stainless steel parts formed by selective laser melting is greater than that of casting 316L stainless steel parts.

Abstract:Direct metal forming(DMF) has been a hot subject in today's rapid prototyping technology.A novel direct metal forming process based on arc welding is introduced and the part properties made by this process are evaluated.Examination of the parts' density,strength,hardness and microstructure showed that the mechanical properties and structure of part made by DMF process are better than SLS(selective laser sintering) process,can be favorably with casting.When different metallic materials are used,the differences of chemical component,physical property and microstructure will cause unfavorable influence on the part's property.

Abstract:Electron beam selective melting is a metal additive manufacturing technology, through electron beam scanning, melting powder materials, layer-by-layer deposition to manufacture three-dimensional metal parts, suitable for the forming and manufacturing of refractory, high-performance metal materials such as titanium alloys and titanium-aluminum-based alloys. Because it can form high-performance metal parts with complex shapes, it has broad application prospects in aerospace, biomedical, automobile manufacturing and other fields. This article summarizes the principles, compares the advantages of selective melting with laser, shows the modern application of the technology, and points out the current technical difficulties and future development direction.

Abstract:Selective Laser Sintering and Selective Laser Melting were applied to carry on rapid prototyping experiments with Fe-base alloy powders.Their different formation mechanisms and corresponding technology parameters were investigated,and their effect on the formation process,microstructure and mechanical properties of metal parts was studied as well.Due to different formation mechanisms,the results show that metal parts with higher density,uniform structure and better mechanical performance can be manufactured by SLM in contrast with SLS,but there exist warpage,crack and balling phenomenon in the formation process easily,which can be avoided by choosing appropriate material and technology parameters.

Abstract:SLM (Selective Laser Melting) is a unique additive manufacturing technology which plays an irreplaceable role in the modern industrial revolution. 3D printers can directly process metal powder quickly to obtain the necessary parts faster. Shortly, it will be possible to manufacture products at unparalleled speeds. Advanced manufacturing technology is used to produce durable and efficient parts with different metals that have good metal structure performance and excellent metal thermal performance, to lead the way for laser powder printing technology. Traditional creative ways are usually limited by time, and cannot respond to customers' needs fast enough; for some parts with high precision and complexity, conventional manufacturing methods are inadequate. Contrary to this, SLM technology offers some advantages, such as requiring no molds this decreases production time and helps to reduce costs. In addition, SLM technology has strong comprehensive functions, which can reduce assembly time and improve material utilization. Parts with complex structures, such as cavities and three-dimensional grids, can be made without restricting the shape of products. Products or parts can be printed quickly without the use of expensive production equipment. The product quality is better, and the mechanical load performance is comparable to traditional production technologies (such as forging). This paper introduces in detail the process parameters that affect SLM technology and how they affect SLM, commonly used metal materials and non-metallic materials, and summarizes the current research. Finally, the problems faced by SLM are prospected.

Abstract:Direct metal forming technology based on electron beam is a new type of rapid manufacturing which combines electron beam machining and rapid prototyping and it makes use of the advantages of electron beam,such as high energy density,high absorption ratio and vacuum environment.In this study,different kinds of powder were researched on the electron beam selective melting(EBSM-I) apparatus made by ourself.The one-dimension experiments showed that the gas atomized 316L stainless powder had well forming ability at low scanning speed and the water atomized powder had serious balling phenomenon.The mixture powder which the weight proportion of the gas atomized powder was 40%～60% had the optimum forming ability and the forming process of this powder had divided into three steps: placing step,preheating step and melting step.The metal parts produced by EBSM have fine microstructure and good metallurgical bonding between layers,which indicates EBSM fits to direct metal forming and tooling.

Abstract:Rapid prototyping based on molten metal droplets deposition is an additive process in which parts are produced from molten materials in a single operation without the use of any mold or other tooling. Near-net shaped parts are fabricated by sequentially depositing molten droplets layer by layer. This paper presents a systematic numerical and experimental investigation of the transient transport phenomenon during the droplets impinging onto a substrate surface. The 3D models based on a volume of fluid (VOF) method were developed to investigate the deposition of molten metal droplets on a horizontally aluminum substrate surface. Based on the above research, a semiquantitative relationship between external morphology and internal microstructure was proposed, which was further certified by investigating the piled vertical columns and the three-dimensional parts. The works should be helpful for the process optimization and non-destructive detection of drop-based rapid prototyping techniques.

Abstract:Abstract With the development of manufacturing technology, traditional manufacturing methods can no longer meet the needs of modern society. Additive manufacturing technology (AM) is a new type, which bases on the principle of layered manufacturing and uses the method of accumulating materials layer by layer to directly manufacture digital models into solid parts. In recent years, AM has been greatly developed and applied. Selective Laser Melting technology (SLM) is a very widely used technology in AM. SLM uses a high-energy laser beam to scan the metal powder on a predetermined path. It first melts the metal powder completely, then after cooling, the melted metal powder solidfies into a part. This article first describes the characteristics and equipment development of SLM technology, then summarizes the application of SLM technology, finally discusses the shortcomings of SLM technology.

Abstract:Selective electron beam melting technique (SEBM) is a kind of metal additive manufacturing technique using electron beam as heat source, can form high-performance metal parts with complex shapes. It has been widely applied in aerospace industrial, biomedical application, automobile manufacturing and other fields. The basic principle of selective electron beam melting technique is briefly introduced, the microstructure and properties of different materials produced by selective electron beam melting technique are reviewed, and the numerical simulation methods of SEBM process and the application of SEBM technique are also summarized in this paper. Finally, some problems to be solved in forming quality of selective electron beam melting technique are pointed out and its development trend is forecasted.

Abstract:Metal micro-parts with complex structure can be manufactured with the selective laser melting method, which has more advantages on forming complex parts in small batches than other traditional manufacture processing. For that reason type HRPM-II machine equipped with 100 W CW fiber laser has been developed at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China. The processing parameters for HRPM-II machine are optimized to make near fully dense lattice parts made from 304L stainless steel. The selective laser melting processing parameters affect the microstructure and mechanical properties of formed parts, and some reasons in detail are also given. © 2008 Taylor & Francis Group.

Abstract:Selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam melting (EBM) are relatively new rapid, additive manufacturing technologies which can allow for the fabrication of complex, multi-functional metal or alloy monoliths by CAD-directed, selective melting of precursor powder beds. By altering the beam parameters and scan strategies, new and unusual, even non-equilibrium microstructures can be produced; including controlled microstructural architectures which ideally extend the contemporary materials science and engineering paradigm relating structure-properties-processing-performance. In this study, comparative examples for SLM and EBM fabricated components from pre-alloyed, atomized precursor powders are presented. These include Cu, Ti-6Al-4V, alloy 625 (a Ni-base superalloy), a Co-base superalloy, and 17-4 PH stainless steel. These systems are characterized by optical metallography, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:To manufacture the metal mould for high-quality metal sheet parts forming at low cost with a short production cycle, an innovative method of mould manufacturing, based on rapid prototyping (RP)/rapid tooling (RT) technology by plasma spraying is proposed in this paper. First, the technological process of the rapid metal mould manufacturing is introduced, and the key technologies of the process such as RP fabrication technology, unbaked ceramic transition mould process, plasma spraying and back-up process are also introduced. Then, experimental moulds for the metal sheet parts forming are successfully made via this process, and examination and analysis of a mould is carried out. It proves that the method of manufacturing a rapid mould for metal sheet parts forming by plasma spraying and RP/RT technology is a successful technique.
