Abstract:This paper deals with the inventory control problem for the hybrid production system. The manufacturing and remanufacturing operations simultaneously satisfy the customer demand. The product returns can enter the global serviceable inventory after being remanufactured. The global serviceable inventory takes the (s, S) continuous review replenishment policy. When the global serviceable inventory level drops to s, the manufacturing activity begins to produce in a batch and to replenish the global serviceable inventory up to S after a stochastic lead time. The changes of inventory state under the stochastic demand and product returns are illustrated with the Markov quasi-birth-death (QBD) processes. The hybrid inventory system is formulated as a Markov decision model. The matrix-geometric approach is used to derive the steady stationary transition probabilities. The optimal inventory parameters can be obtained by minimizing the long-run average cost. One numerical example is taken to illustrate the proposed methodology.

Abstract:This paper addresses the optimal design of a hybrid assembly-recycling network that simultaneously integrates the forward and reverse logistics among its multi-product multi-echelon superstructure. Multiple sources of raw materials including components and parts are considered at different stages of the forward assembly process. The problem investigates three recycling options for final products, semi-products and modules. Various types of uncertainties on return flow and waste flow are investigated. To optimize the dual-system superstructure, the problem is hereby modeled by a fuzzy mixed integer linear programming approach. Piecewise linear membership functions are constructed for the objectives to represent the diversified satisfactory degrees which preferably comply with the real-world decision scenarios. Further, an interactive fuzzy optimization approach is developed to solve the problem by differentiating the piece-wise sections of satisfactory degrees. Finally, an electronic assembly plant with its own recycling process is chosen as the industrial case to implement the proposed approach. Sensitivity analysis and comparison under different scenarios are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness on obtaining compromised solutions under diversified satisfactory degrees in such an uncertain environment.

The uncertainty characteristics of Reverse Logistics caused by the stochastic return rate, various conditions of returned products make the management of reverse logistics difficult. Updated detail modeling method on three sub problems: design of product recovery network, inventory control in reverse logistics, remanufacturing production plan and scheduling are discussed, and the related problems are sketched. At last, several future research areas are given.

Abstract:This article surveys the recently emerged field of reverse logistics. The management of return flows induced by the various forms of reuse of products and materials in industrial production processes has received growing attention throughout this decade. Many authors have proposed quantitative models taking those changes in the logistics environment into account. However, no general framework has been suggested yet. Therefore the time seems right for a systematic overview of the issues arising in the context of reverse logistics. In this paper we subdivide the field into three main areas, namely distribution planning, inventory control, and production planning. For each of these we discuss the implications of the emerging reuse efforts, review the mathematical models proposed in the literature, and point out the areas in need of further research. Special attention is paid to differences and/or similarities with classical ‘forward’ logistics methods.

Abstract:In this paper, the periodic review stochastic inventory control problem is investigated where the logistics cost consists of holding costs, shortage costs and ordering costs. The goal is to coordinate a sequence of orders of a single commodity, aiming to supply stochastic demands over a discrete finite horizon with minimum expected costs. Under some assumptions, the convexity of the cost function is proved and the global optimal solution can be given by explicit form. Finally, the numerical examples are presented to illustrate the validity for solving this model using Simulated Annealing algorithm. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:Nowadays, companies are recognizing their primordial roles and responsibilities towards the protection of the environment and save the natural resources. They are focusing on some contemporary activities such as Reverse Logistics which is economically and environmentally viable. However, the integration of such an initiative needs flows restructuring and supply chain management in order to increase sustainability and maximize profits. Under this background, this paper addresses an inventory control model for a reverse logistics system that deals with two separated types of demand, for new products and remanufactured products, with different selling prices. The model consists of a single shared machine between production and remanufacturing operations, while the machine is subject to random failures and repairs. Three stock points respectively for returns, new products and remanufactured products are investigated. Meanwhile, in this paper, a modeling of the problem with Discrete-Event simulation using Arena® was conducted. Regarding the purpose of finding, a near-optimal inventory control policy that minimizes the total cost, an optimization of the model based on Tabu Search and Genetic Algorithms was established. Computational examples and sensitivity analysis were performed in order to compare the results and the robustness of each proposed algorithm. Then the results of the two methods were compared with those of OptQuest® optimization tool.

Abstract:This paper is focus on reverse logistics which is a part of “environmental logistics”. With the development of high-tech, the “win-win” strategy that developing economy and protecting the environment has gained more and more attention nowadays. This paper is organized into 5 sections. In section 1 and 2, the motive factors of the reverse logistics implementation and the current station of Chinese steel industry is discussed. Then the model of reverse logistics system for steel industry designed in section 3, which is composed of returned logistics and waste material logistics. There is the practical application in section 4 and the conclusion at last. The purpose of this paper is to research the Chinese reverse logistics and help the relevant companies who would like to pursue reverse logistics as a new market.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a periodic review, capacitated, make-to-stock system with two demand classes. The first class demand comes from customers who have long term and profitable relationships with the manufacturer. The second class demand comes from the retail market. The first class demand not satisfied immediately is backordered, whereas the unsatisfied second class demand is lost. There are two fundamental decisions for managing such a system, i.e., production decision and rationing decision. We prove that a base stock rationing policy is optimal. Furthermore, through an extensive numerical study, we study the cost savings of the optimal policy compared with two common used heuristics and show that the benefit of the optimal control policy can be quite significant.

Abstract:Nowadays, people have higher requirements for the varieties and personalities of commodities with the gradual improvement of their living standard, and more and more commodities have the characteristics of single-period or short-life cycle, so the coordination of supply chain on newsboy-type products becomes an important issue in supply chain management. In this paper, we address the challenge in dealing with the inventory model under limited warehouse and renting warehouse. First, we develop a general profit maximization model for the case that the retailer has limited warehouse capacity and outsourcing warehouse may be required, and prove that expected profit Junction is concave. Then, we derive the closed-form expressions of order quantities for several cases with the Kuhn-Tucker method to solve this nonlinear optimization problem, and further analyze the optimal solutions. Finally, we conclude that the classical newsboy model is a special case of the problem studied in this paper.

Process Integration and Optimization for Sustainability

Abstract:AbstractIn recent years, the majority of business organizations have concentrated on product recycling, waste reduction initiatives and the proper disposal of expired products due to government regulations and consumer concerns about environmental issues. In this study, a reverse logistics inventory model for multi-retailers is taken into consideration, along with the effect of carbon emission from product manufacturing, remanufacturing, storage and deterioration. To regulate the release of carbon emissions from various sources, a carbon tax regulation has been implemented. Volume flexibility (which allows production to be reduced or increased in response to observed demand) plays an essential role in supply chain management; by implementing this, supply chain managers can control the risk of imperfect production which often occurs due to machinery problems. Also, they can reduce some costs by using flexible labour resources (hiring temporary workers instead of permanent workers). In this paper, a producer-retailer-customer supply chain system is developed in which the producer, as well as the retailer, offers a trade credit policy in order to stimulate sales and reduce inventory. This policy serves as an incentive tool to attract new customers and boost the business. The aim of this paper is to find the optimal value of total cost under a forward and backward supply chain system. An algorithm is provided in order to solve the optimization problem, which generates the optimal solution for optimal time and production rate, thereby minimizing the total integrated cost. Convexity is depicted graphically, and numerical examples are used to describe the applicability of the proposed model. Finally, a sensitivity analysis has been performed for various parameters of the inventory model, where the impact of each parameter on the optimal solution is shown to extract some management knowledge. The findings are very managerial and instructive for organizations and businesses seeking environmentally conscious production systems.

Abstract:Considering the uncertainty of recycling quantity and the capacity constrained of the reproduction equipment in different periods during the reverse logistics operation, a multi-period multi-product two-stage robust optimized model with the goal of minimizing the total cost of reverse logistics network including production cost and equipment running cost and inventory cost which lets the recycling quantity of reverse logistics and reproduction cost as well as market demand be the uncertain parameters considering the uncertainty of recycling quantity and the capacity constrained of the reproduction equipment in different periods during the reverse logistics operation is established. An example is given to illustrate and verify the validity and effectiveness of the model.

Abstract:Previous studies show that the concept of L-b-convexity is helpful in characterizing the optimal policy for some inventory models with positive leadtimes. Such examples include the lost-sales inventory model by Zipkin (2008). On the structure of lost-sales inventory models. Operations Research, 56(4) 937-944. and the inventory-pricing model by Pang et al. (2012). A note on the structure of joint inventory-pricing control with leadtimes. Operations Research, 60(3), 581-587. However, when taking batch ordering into account, L-b-convexity does not work anymore. In this paper, we extend L-b-convexity to a more general concept termed as Q-jump-L-b-convexity and apply it to batch ordering inventory models including a lost-sales inventory model and an inventory-pricing model with batch ordering and positive leadtimes. By utilizing this new concept, we can partially characterize the structure of the optimal policies for both the models. Moreover, we are able to evaluate the sensitivity of the optimal decisions with respect to system states. Our results can also be applied to the serial and the assembly inventory systems with lost-sales and batch ordering.

Abstract:We propose new mathematical models of inventory management in a reverse logistics system. The proposed models extend the model introduced by Nahmias and Rivera with the assumption that the demand for newly produced and repaired (remanufacturing) items are not the same. We derive two mathematical models and formulate unconstrained and constrained optimization problems to optimize the holding cost. We also introduce the solution procedures of the proposed problems. The exactness of the proposed solutions has been tested by numerical experiments. Nowadays, it is an essential commitment for industries to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as well as energy consumption during the production and remanufacturing processes. This paper also extends along this line of research, and therewith develops a three-objective mathematical model and provides an algorithm to obtain the Pareto solution.

Abstract:The paper analyzes the coordination and efficiency of a two-tiers assembly supply and demand system,in which the reverse logistics exist as a result of the sharing of the salvage value of the left-over inventories.In the presence of the reverse logistics and asymmetric information,our research indicates that the traditional revenue-sharing contract cannot effectively coordinate the supply chain.Furthermore,under the sharing contract for the system with competition and signaling,our analysis through establishing the newsvendor model separately for every party of the supply chain implies that the effective coordination can only be achieved through introducing the signaling mechanism and suppliers' competition of the same kind of products simultaneously,plus the incentive for a long-term relationship.Our conclusion is justified through a computational study,and is consistent with the original meaning of supply and demand network.

Abstract:Making decisions about the design and implementation of a logistics network is crucial as it has long-term impacts. However, it is important to consider that demand factors and the number of returned items by customers may change over time. Therefore, it is necessary to design a logistics network that can adapt to various demand fluctuations. The main goal of this study is to calculate the quantity of products that should be sent at different times in a supply chain network to minimize the overall cost of reverse logistics and tardiness time. Accordingly, a multi-objective mathematical model is proposed that aims to optimize the total cost and the amount of delay in sending customer orders in a three-level logistics network, assuming that some parameters are uncertain. Additionally, the minimization of waiting time, considering the level of delay in sending, is applied as the second objective function. To handle the uncertainty in the reverse logistics network, a fuzzy approach is implemented, and the proposed model is solved using GAMS software. Furthermore, to solve the mathematical model in large dimensions, the Cuckoo Optimization Algorithm (COA) is applied in MATLAB software, and the results are compared to the global optimal solution. The outcomes show that the proposed algorithm has a desirable performance, as the total values sent to the manufacturer are equal to those obtained from the exact solution, and the objective function value decreases as the number of repetitions increases.

Abstract:This paper generalizes the standard newsboy model to the case including freight cost, in which the capacity of one container is the limit and the freight cost is proportional to the number of the containers used. We show that the optimal ordering quantity is either the newsboy solution or some multiple of the container's capacity. We also propose an algorithm to compute the optimal policy. Furthermore, we generalize these results to the case in which the inventory and the price are determined jointly with emergency purchase.

Abstract:As a study foundation of supply chain coordination, the newsboy model and its extensions have attracted more and more scholars in the recent years. This paper investigates the jointed inventory problem on ordering and pricing for a short-life-cycle product. For a product characterised by a single manufacturing cycle and two selling periods, we depict the jointed decision problem from the view of the centralised system with a stochastic dynamic programming model and develop a jointed decision method for its ordering and pricing. Then, we design an iterative search algorithm to find the optimal decision vectors. Finally, we analyse the characteristics of the decision by running simulation examples.
